  1. I can't wait for next week..... From the preview....Grandmother finds "wretched wench" (Daya & Mrs Wang) brought a "wench" for Dae Ryeok..... As usual you know what is going to happen next.....when Grandmother raises both her hands....her target....the korean classic "hair pulling" catfight
  2. @valerie savage "I'm also confused about the history of LG, LG was the only prince in line to the thone after his older brother passed away which he ws supposed to have been apart of his death.. Giving the sickness older brother had he was alergic to shell fish also which LG brought back from China for him to try and this is supposed to be how his older brother died..... It is because Gyeongjong is childless due to his sterility even though he had 2 wives/Crown Princess later Queens for decades since he ascended the throne at 34 & took no Secondary Consorts to be said Yi Geum later Yeongjo involvement in his brother's death is rumours, no historical evidence to support as could have been spin doctors (in the drama people like Dal Moon or the story teller can spin stories in a jiffy) from the rival factions. Noron & Soron was at the height on each other necks as in the reign of Sukjong, the King was so good in getting political factions to pit against each other to increase his Royal Authority (mentioned in the drama by Min Jin Heon). Gyeongjong was not allergic to crabs, it was his favourite. Korean have a dish Raw Crabs marinated in Soy Sauce (Ganjang Gejang, 간장게장). Gyeongjong died of food poisoning due to food handling of the dish. Consumption of Raw Food due to mishandling still occur until today Gyeongjong had the dish in the heat of Summer...those who know about food safety. Yi Geum said to have ordered the dish but he himself didn't prepare the dish for his brother, said to arouse his brother appetite but how the people who handle the food will be in question Korea is a seafood galore, there is no need to get seafood from China In the summer without ice pack transporting seafood from port to kitchen opens up to pathogens. Further Gyeongjong also had dried persimmons, usually use as a sugar substitute, it is common to have Penicillium cyclopium contamination in dried persimmon, the other is persimmons have tannic acid if eaten in access may cause stomach ache...looks like Gyeongjong double dose of food poisoning & his ill health constitution didn't help "It has been said his mom had more then one son from the king.. She had like 3 or 4 boys from him plus a couple of daughters, one daughter was taken into the palace to be raised as a princess.." Someone in the forum had reply to your query Yi Geum (born in 1694 as an infant he was known as Prince Huisu (禧壽), he was investiture with Princedom title of Prince Yeoninggun when he was 5 years old) is Choi Suk Bin's 2nd son there was a Prince Yeongsu (永壽) born in 1693 (feature in Dong Yi & expanded in the drama Daebak). There was a 3rd son born in 1698 but didn't survive infancy.
  3. @luvabe "Any plot development today folks?" Go Rae is suffering from liver disorder most likely cirrhosis from the symptoms that he is displaying thus making room for "liver transplant" Liver is the only human organ that regenerates, therefore a living donor will eventually regenerates his/her liver & return to its normal size shortly after surgical removal part of the liver for transplant

  5. @lightbringer06 " It took me a while to actually familiarize myself with the Minister of Personnel, Min Jin Heon. I just need to memorize his wardrobe to remember him. Idk, they all have the same beard" In the drama Min Jin Heon will be loosely based on the historical figure Min Jin Won (민진원,閔鎭遠 1664-1736) from his character description & credentials or he could be completely fictional character from the scriptwriter penship. Noron faction & brother of Sukjong 2nd Queen, Queen Inhyeon of Yeoheung Min clan Although Min Jin Heon is said to be Queen Inhyeon's younger brother but in history, Queen Inhyeon have 2 older brothers Min Jin Hu (민진후,閔鎭厚, 1659 -1720) & Min Jin Won The other in this drama is the Inspector-General (Daesaheon 대사헌 大司憲) is Yi Yi Gyeom (이이겸) which Sukjong summoned him & relayed that he wants Prince Yeoninggun to succeed Crown Prince later Gyeongjong, is based on the historical figure Yi Yi Myeong who is from the Noron faction It is said in history Sukjong supposedly had told Yi Yi Myeong (이이명,李頤命 1658 - 1722) to name Prince Yeoninggun as Gyeongjong's heir in the absence of a Court recorder to verified. In history indeed Yi Yi Myeong (he is also a distant relative, descended from Prince Mil Seong gun Yi Chim (밀성군 이침,密城君 李琛 1430-1479), son of Sejong the Great borne from Royal Noble Consort of Shinbin of Cheongju Kim clan (1406-1464), at that moment he was indeed the current Inspector-General (Daesaheon) in Saheonbu (사헌부,司憲府).
  6. @lightbringer06 Anyhow, question, guys, Prince Yeoning had two wives in the history, right? We already have Lady Seo (Queen Jeongsong). And there's Queen Jeongsun. It seems she's not part of the cast, huh. Or who could she be...or did they just leave that part out." Yeongjo indeed had 2 Queen Consort Lady Seo is the drama is Queen Jeongseong, of the Dalsung Seo clan. She was Queen for 33 years from 1724-1757. She died at the age 66 Queen Jeongsun was Queen from 1759 -1776, when she became Queen, Yeongjo was already 65 years old

  8. For those who are interested in the board game is known as Seung Gyeong Do (승경도,陞卿圖). Prince Yeoninggun dice his way to become King (王), in the actual board game, there is no King but Saheonbu staff revamp the board & game rules
  9. @rocher22 "I dont know if thats how this prince was killed in real history too." In history Prince Mipunggun Yi Tan (밀풍군 이탄, 密豊君 李坦 1698-1729) revolt against Yeongjo in his 4th year of reign in 1728 under the Soron faction known as Yi In Jwa Revolt (이인좌의난, 李麟佐之亂 or 무신란,戊申亂), feature in the drama "Daebak") who wanted to place Prince Milpung gun on the throne but failed in the attempt, as it only lasted 4 days. Prince Milpung gun was executed in 1729 & strip of his title. Gojong in 1864 reinstated his princedom. Ironic Prince Yeon Ryeong Gun, Yi Hwon (연령군 이훤, 延齡君 李昍 1699 -1719), Sukjong 6th son, borne from Royal Noble Consort Myeongbin of Miryang Park clan, died childless, although he was married in 1707. Yeongjo had Prince Milpunggun's 2nd son Seong Won Gun Yi Gong (상원군 이공, 商原君 李糿, 1715 - 1733) posthumous adopted (罷養) to Prince Yeon Ryeong Gun as a son in 1727 & escape death when his father revolt Yi In Jwa (이인좌, 李麟佐) not to be mistaken for Yi Gwang Jwa (이광좌, 李光佐, 1674 -1740 who is from the Soron faction but a moderate) played by Im Ho in the drama who successfully suppressed the revolt & was bestowed Meritorious official 1st rank officialdom Bun Mun Won Jong Gong Sin ( 분무원종공신 1등, 奮武原從功臣一等)

  11. @luvabe "One complication is that WDR and DR would then be cousins (?) so they wouldn't be able to stay married (I think)." Yes they can, because they are related through matrilineal lineage, grandmothers are sisters & WDR & DR are already 3rd generation maternal cousin (이종 사촌, 姨表) & carry different surnames, even if they carry the same surname, after three generation, it is permissible to get married although some may frown on the matter unless they belong to different province or clan
  12. @spark101 "They also list 초홍, who yeongjo/yi geum meets and brings her in(says so under seo-ssi's description- she gets mad that he did this). presumably she is the one concubine he had before being crown prince. " I can only quote Yeongjo's Consorts that is listed in the Joseon annals According to the Cho Hong (초홍) description, she is a Gisaeng that Yi Geum, Prince Yeoninggun later Yeongjo frequent in the brothel which is more his confidant & a person he can find solace & comfort She is a fictional character
  13. @spark101 "I'm trying to Identify yeongjo's official wife and concubine(whom he had before he was even crown prince), but I can't figure it out... is it the rightmost two women with the lavender skirts? " According to the cast list at the website there is a few Royal Ladies Queen Inwon Seo ssi - Prince Yeoning's principal wife Crown Princess - Crown Prince later Gyeongjong's wife Queen Inwon of Gyeongju Kim clan - Sukjong 3rd Queen, played by Nam Ki Ae who played Cha Soo Hyun's mother in Encounter Cast list only have Yeongjo or Prince Yeoninggun principal wife listed as Seo ssi played by Choi Su Im (최수임) History lesson Yeongjo's Queen Consort, Queen Jeongseong of Dalsung Seo clan, married Prince Yeoninggun at age 10 in 1703. 1721 when Gyeongjong ascended the throne, she was Crown Princess. In 1724, she was Queen Consort when Prince Yeoninggun ascended the throne as Yeongjo. She died in 1757 age 66 years As for Royal Noble Consort Jeong of Hamseong Lee clan, mother of Crown Prince Hyojang is not mentioned in the cast list. She borne Prince Gyeonguigun (경의군, 敬義君) later Crown Prince Hyojang in 1719. She died in 1721 In the reign of Sukjong, one have to remember that Gyeongjong was Crown Prince & he is in the cast list played by Han Seung Hyeon (한승현) Crown Princess (Crown Prince's wife) is in the cast list played by Song Ji Min (송지인) History lesson Crown Princess married Crown Prince at age 14 in 1718, becomes Queen Seonui of Hamjong Eo clan when Gyeongjong ascended the throne in 1721. In 1724 during Yeongjo reign, she was Queen Dowager Gyeongsun. She died in 1730 age 26

  16. @lightbringer06 Gukbap was the first Korean tavern (street food) Although first records of gukbap can be trace to the Joseon Dynasty but actual history of the dish goes back to Three Kingdom era. For its convenience as all they had to do was to boiled a full & large cauldron of soup then scoop over rice upon individual orders , gukbap had long been a staple food for merchants in market places, for travelers stopping over at inns & for farmer looking for a quick, full meal after a hard day's work at the fields A good hot gukbap on a cold winter day will take off your weary I like Ha Seon teaching Queen Ryu, the anatomy of the pig Queen picks up an unidentified piece of meat Queen Ryu: What is this? Ha Seon: Pig heart - Dwaeji Yeomtong (돼지 - Dwaeji 염통 - Yeom Tong is the native Korean word for heart where else the common word you might hear for heart simjang - 심장, 心臟 is the Sino Korean word) Queen Ryu puts it down & search her bowl for another & picks up Queen Ryu: What is this then? Ha Seon: Pork intestine (Changja - 창자, 腸子 or chitterlings usually indicate the small intestine) I also remember that Kim Sang Kyung in his interview indicate that what attracted him to the script was Episode 8....we will see what happens in Episode 8
  17. For those who are interested The dish is called Guk-bap (국밥) & the meat is pork but nowadays you get good cuts of meat (pork or beef) rather than what was offered - offal.

  19. @maplinh The location where the Queen smiles as Ha Seon is in Changdeokgung palace's (창덕궁, 昌德宮) Huwon (후원, 後苑) My file picture of Changdeokgung palace's (창덕궁, 昌德宮) Huwon (후원, 後苑) taken in November 2016. This area is known as Jondeokjeong Pavilion Area built in 1644. The said pavilion with a roof shaped like the ribs of a fan is Gwanramjeong (관람정, 觀纜亭) on the left which the Queen was standing & smiling, the other name that was given for its fan shape is Seonjajeong (扇子亭). Meanwhile on the facing hill where Ha Seon was standing & looking down as the Queen is Seungjaejeong (승재정,勝在亭). "Seungjae" (승재) means outstanding scenery." Both of these pavilion are believed to have been built during Jeongjo's reign. The palace garden is also known by other names Geumwon (금원, 禁苑) as it is restricted access to the King, Members of the Royal Family & Palace women. Officials can only enter with the King's permission. It is also known as Naewon (내원, 內苑). These days the garden is known as Biwon (비원, 秘院, Secret Garden) Huwon was created in 1406 after Changdeokgung palace was dedicated as a secondary palace in 1405. The present size of the garden was expanded in 1462 Admission - to enter Huwon or Secret Garden, you need to purchase W8,000 ticket which include the admission to Changdeokgung palace as well & follow a scheduled guided tour to the garden. Admission to Huwon can only be done through these guided tours English tours is 10:30am, 11:30am, 14:30 & 15:30. But if you just want to enjoy the scenic view of the garden, there is nothing stopping you from joining or taking a tour of another language e.g. Korean (more frequent tours) if your schedule can't accommodate the English tour
  20. @valsava " We need.....our fellow historian to fill us in on this.. With regards to the green wedding dress, I believe that the question had been answer "I remember when I watch Yi San several years back the colors of there place was also a part of the colors of the palace in China being that Korea was supposed to be the mother state to China or something of that nature.. " The colours for Korean palaces & Buddhist temples known as Dancheong (단청,丹青) built during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) & later Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) were influences from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) architect Li Jie (李誡 1065-1110) which were known as "Painting & Decoration of the Song Style" (宋式彩畫) in which the drama era is based For your information, I am not following this drama therefore have no knowledge on the on-goings

  25. @Jillia "I think if they got married as children already she should know Lee Hun very well and at least be suspicious about the sudden change in behavior. " For history knowledge.....& in no relation to the drama Queen Munseong (1576-1623) married Gwanghaegun when she was 11 in 1587 & was confer Princess Consort Munseong. In 1592 (at the last days before the Japanese invasion or Imjin Wars) at the age of 16, she was made Crown Princess. In 1608, at the age of 32 she became Queen Consort when Gwanghaegun ascended the throne Contrary to the drama, Queen Munseong borne Gwanghaegun a son Crown Prince Yi Jil (이지, 李祬) in 1598 Gwanghaegun died in Jeju-do in 1641 age 67, although he was initially buried in Jeju-do but in 1643, according to his last will, he was move to the present Gwanghaegun Myo ( 남양주 광해군묘) in Namyangju Gyeonggi-do that he wish to buried at the down-right side of his mother Royal Noble Consort of Gongbin of Kim clan tomb. Gwanghaegun is buried together with his Queen, Queen Munseong who had died in Ganghwa Island in 1623, was initially buried in Yangju then move to join her husband at the present site in 1643. Gwanghaegun had a Royal Tomb (myo) befitting of his Princedom rank not King In 2002, a Cyber Joseon Dynasty network render Gwanghaegun a temple name although it is an unofficial bestowment as the Bureau that confer temple name " The Bureau of Rites" (Yejo, 예조) or Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors,홍문관 弘文館) no longer exist. Gwanghaegun with a temple name (묘호,廟號) of Hyejong (혜종,惠宗) & his posthumous official title is 혜종 경렬성평민무헌문대왕 (惠宗 景烈成平愍武獻文大王- Hyejong Gyeong Ryeol Seong Pyeong Min Mu Heon Mun Dae Wang) For Queen Munseong of Ryu Clan, she had been bestowed as Queen Hyejang (혜장왕후,惠章) & her posthumous official title is 소온사헌혜장왕후 (昭溫思獻惠章王后 - So Eun Sa Heon Hyejang Wanghu) The tomb had been upgrade to King's tomb with the given name Yeolneung (열릉,烈 陵).
