So I have been stewing on this idea for a while and wanted to write a fanfic of my own version/interpretation of the ending after Wuji left Ming Sect. Takes place 2.5 years into Wuji's search (because I wanted to see him suffer? A lot?)

More chapters to come. This is the first fanfic I've written in almost 15 years (also the first time in 6 years I've touched Photoshop to create fanart), so I am open to hearing your thoughts. I just hope someone can enjoy Wuji's suffering as much as me /grins evilly

    Title: Fortunately

    Summary:

    妳便是我 命運安排的人

You are the one fate has arranged for me.

    --

Sometimes, on the most discouraging of nights when the endless roads and vast horizons tire him to his core, Wu Ji wonders if the pain will ever end. He wonders if two years or even two more years or even two more years after that will yield anything at all.

Then he remembers his Tai Shi Fu’s words, and he optimistically bargains that he is young, that he has many years and even decades ahead of him to find her. Just the slightest anticipation of seeing her again wills him forward onto a path of renewed hope because that is how Wu Ji will always be. The fear of giving up and living with regret scares him more than an endless journey without hope. Without her.

    Chapter 1: Another Long Night

Wu Ji blinks rapidly to avoid the gust of sand and dirt from hitting his tired eyes. The past few months have been particularly blistering with harsher winds than he has ever experienced out here. He has been traveling alone with only his horse as his sole companion for the past two and a half years. Wu Ji is suddenly grateful for Ping On 平安.

“I had originally wanted to sew the words 平安 on there, but your wu gong is so highly skilled that probably for you, staying safe will not be difficult.”

    平安.

Her words still ring in his mind, and Wu Ji sighs as he tightens his hands around the silk handkerchief and Ping On’s harness. He digs his feet into the horse’s sides to move them both along a little quicker. The sun is setting soon.

Wu Ji cannot remember the last time he felt at peace.

    --

Night falls and Wu Ji luckily finds a small abandoned house on the outskirts of the Mongolian desert.

    “Hello, is anyone inside?”

He hears no response and approaches with his stead. From the outside, Wu Ji can tell the house has seen its fair share of history, but it is kempt. He notices his fingers have gone stiff from the cold as he ties Ping On to the fence out front. Wu Ji slowly pushes open the gate and calls out one more time to see if anyone is there.

He does not receive a response and proceeds further inside. Through the darkness, he can see that it is a rather old house, but is thankful to find a bed of sorts. On top of it sits a pillow and blanket folded neatly. There is a brief moment where Wu Ji wonders what made someone move out so fast that they did not even collect their bedding, but that thought is suddenly blown away by a swift gust of wind.

He quickly heads back outside to collect some twigs and tree branches to start a small fire.

Lying down on the first bed he has had in months, Wu Ji wonders if he has brought enough water for both him and Ping On during this part of the journey. There is no food tonight for either of them. They have mostly lived off of the land for months on end, and it was sustainable while they were still within China’s borders, but it was not as easy once he crossed into Mongolia.

He has had to resort to seeking shelter and food from local residents in exchange for his labor, and to his surprise, the Mongolian people warmed easily to him. He hopes that maybe now that the war is over, both sides can go back to living their peaceful lives again without hate and prejudice.

Wu Ji knows what he looks like. His plain Hanfu differentiates him and its simplicity leaves much to be desired in terms of first impressions, but he figures his sincerity and exchange for labor can help win them over. Besides, comfort is the most important thing when traveling and in these plain garbs, Wu Ji finally feels comfortable. He feels like himself again. The young man who entered Lu Liu Shan Zhang with his hair simply pulled into a bun, messy bangs in his face, and wearing humbled clothes is the man Wu Ji is happiest being.

The biggest obstacle Wu Ji currently faces is the unpredictability of the Mongolian desserts. Its climate has proven to be more challenging than Wu Ji had thought.

Days are scorching and nights are contrastingly cold. The heat of the desert is long gone, and nighttime brings an iciness that Wu Ji has never felt before.

Wu Ji has always liked the cold.

It reminds him of soft hands stroking his cheeks while a warm voice lulls him into deep slumber. He thinks of strong hands that hoisted him up on sturdy shoulders, and golden hair that pressed against his cheeks as he burrowed deeper into the embrace.

But this cold is different. The desert’s coldness chills his bones more than a distant Northern Island that once housed his small family ever could.

It is sterile and endless and empty. Aside from Ping On, Wu Ji has no one.

He has learned from a young age that people leave. They can love him and still leave and never come back.

His parents. Xiao Zhao. Zhi Ruo. His grandfather. His Yi Fu.

Wu Ji learned that he, too, could love someone and leave.

He could catch her in his arms and close his eyes and move closer inch by heart-pounding inch, merely centimeters apart from perfectly bowed lips and still recede back into the vastness of his heart like waves in the ocean.

He could stand there and hopelessly watch as she struggles to push a wooden boat almost as immovable as his heart; he says nothing when she pleads for them to stay.

He could leave a farewell note and sneak off in the early mornings as to not have to confront a princess who continues to risk her life for him no matter the opponent; not a terrifyingly foreign group of Persians nor a band of beggars nor a group of righteous Wu Dang warriors could intimidate her.

He could let his arms dangle lifelessly as she wraps her delicate frame around his, push her off of him and gently set her small hands down, letting go of all the yearnings in his heart for the sake of loyalty and patriotism.

“Zhang Wu Ji! I can let go of everything for you. Why can’t you let go of everything for me? Why? Why?”

No, he couldn’t sacrifice the bigger picture for her. He had made promises to a fiancée and a Ming Sect and the whole goddamn Wu Lin and millions of Chinese civilians that could not be broken.

It did not matter that her words and her touch and her laughter and her tears could shake him to his core. It did not matter that for the first time in his life, the red he saw while crimson blossomed on her dress could make him want to tear apart a person with his bare hands. It did not matter that the thought of her drowning beneath icy waters and drifting all alone to shore twisted and shredded the knots inside his stomach. It did not matter.

He had needed to walk away for all of them. It was going to be less painful this way in the end.

Wu Ji interrupts his own thoughts with a short, bitter chuckle.

Promises. He had made so many of them, and in order to keep them, he had let her leave. Wu Ji tries not to think about what could have or would have happened had he left with her. As often as that thought comes to his mind, Wu Ji just as quickly buries it under the choices he cannot change.

In the end, he doesn’t even know what is less painful or more painful anymore. He just knows pain.

He promised he was going to find her no matter what or how long it takes. He had made this promise to himself, to her.

Wu Ji always keeps his promises.

He closes his eyes and clutches firmly to the blue fabric as he pulls it close to his chest.

“In this current war-ridden world we live in, your responsibilities are substantial. The people around you are constantly talking, strategizing. If you want to stay on this righteous path, then you will have to be clear-minded 清明.”

    “I understand.”

Wu Ji had not understood. Not fully.

Not until he saw his Ming Sect soldiers burst out of the ground, piercing Ru Yang Wong’s once indestructible armor with arrows after arrows. Not until she clutched her father’s crimson body and profusely (futilely) cried out apology after apology.

No, it wasn’t until he heard Fan Yao admit to knowing beforehand, to plotting with the men he called his blood brothers behind his back that he understood. They had all planned this in secret without him, a betrayal far more terrifying than he could have imagined. They had hurt him, yes. But Wu Ji’s pain was immaterial in the face of a daughter who had just lost one of the three people she loved most in this entire world.

By the time he understood, it was too late. He could only shoulder the blame for his people, could only watch as her eyes raged and warred while her hands slowly faltered as he stepped in front of her sword. As the metal pierced through aged wood high above the Ming Sect, Wu Ji understood. There was no going back.

He was going to have to watch her walk away this time. How ironic that when he finally realized how much she meant to him, he lost her.

    His lashes have suddenly dampened.

He raises the hand on his chest to cover this eyes and thinks: this is going to be another long night.

I love it...please continue this fanfic. I actually cried when reading it.  I said I love to see WJ being tortured for missing MM but I also has a soft spot for him.

Thank you for cutting the emotional crying scenes, imo they cry enough, please no more. Please cry of happiness not from more drama:rolleyes:

I really don't mind the emotional crying scenes, especially angst scenes from WJ mourning for MM.  Love seeing him being tortured, that crying scenes when holding the hair pin are beautifully done. I want more..evil smile...:naughty:

I’ve always thought it was weird for

him to go from miss Zhao to min min without any scenes in between. Def might’ve cut something. His acceptance of her was so fast when three scenes prior? he was trying so hard to resist her (esp the cave scene).

I remember the crown prince role in the 2001 version with Gigi the most! I think she almost got married to him and wj tried to save her. But turns out it was her father plan too to capture wj. Something like that. Might be a little fuzzy.

Do you guys think they probably sharing the same bed in that farm house?  When MM woke up from the pain shoulder, she kinds of looked to her left like checking if WJ is still sleeping.

The 2003 version also have the prince story with MM.  That prince was so madly in love with MM.

ZM never intending to crash the wedding is the same as WJ angry with ZM for forcing him to leave the wedding. Both so NOT true!

Both of them are not willing to back down.  It's fun to hear WJ said "If you think the reason I saved you is because I still have feeling for you, you can just give it up"  Lastly "You used my godfather's life to threaten me to run away from my wedding.  I did not even have a chance to explain to ZR.  You make me become a bad person.  I don't want to be with you for this life time, and I also don't care if you're dead or alive"  So did he mean, if MM didn't crash his wedding, after marrying ZR, he still want to be with MM in this life time.

I'm in Seoul. I've never heard that they will dub the HSDS 2019 in Korean. I also doubt they will do since Korean viewers prefer a drama with subtitles to dubbed one.

And yes. Finally!! :D:lol: The HSDS 2019 will be aired TONIGHT in Korea with subtitles. I'm so excited to see this drama with Korean subtitles. I also hope they include the cut scenes but it's very unlikely. I think they will release the same version as it was aired in China.  As you can see in the preview below,  they just put Korean subtitles on the same preview. -_-

    https://www.bilibili.com/video/av50313583?from=search&seid=7752793625256258453

BUT, if they include any cut scenes, I'll let you guys know for sure. B)

Please let us know if it's going to be 50 episodes, 60 minutes/ep (Weibo source).  If that's the case the Korean version might include some cut scenes.

    The raining scene.

Why wouldn't I return? I know you are waiting for me, no matter where I am (?), I will always come back to your side.

    The coffin scene.

MinMin, I don't care what you think. I'll definitely go look for you.  After I finished the duties I promised, no matter where you are(?). I'll definitely bring you back to my side.

To anyone that has watched '94 version, what is the similarities this version has with the '94? Since both of them has either the same director or the screenwriter or producer right?

What makes this version better than the '94? I've watched only snippets of '94 I want to murder both WJ and ZM, hahaha. Steve Ma he's acting like he's in a Qiong Yao series, like dude calm down stop being so emotional lol.

That's why I'm surprised I like this version so much, how come the same people that make that abomination could make this version that I couldn't get it out of my head?

I would really like to hear all your thoughts. Cheers!:D

I never watch the 94 version, but my guess is probably the actor and actress (Joseph and Yukee) playing the characters.  They don't overacted and have amazing sizzling chemistry.

Lol, this was great!  I even paused it a few times:lol:  I am curious about the interactions between WJ and XZ though. What does being a maid entail?  We saw her comb and style his hair, but would he have let her apply medicine on his back?

I'm wondering does XZ's job descriptions include bathing and changing for WJ.:sweatingbullets:  I remembered before XZ left for persia, didn't she requested to changed for WJ one last time.

Is it bad that sometime I wish I hadn’t watch this as to not be in this situation now?

Go go to bed thinking about it and wake up thinking about it. None of the other versions ever did me like this. Even my favorite ten miles peach blossom or nirvana in fire didn’t make me react like this.

You r not alone:lol:  This is such a distraction, I can't concentrated on my daily life anymore.  Every nights I have to re watched WJ-MM scenes and MVs.  I even dreamed about the drama. :sweatingbullets: I really don't know how long it's going to take for me to let go and move on to another drama. This is bad, really reallllyyyy bad.

Oh yeah, for TMPB, I was able to moved on after about 1 week.  But I was not addicted to the point to stalking a forum like HSDS 19.

it's possible that WJ might get interested if ZR did not go haywire with her jealousy, hatred,  and blind ambitions to fulfil her shifu goal. Like He shows interest with XZ in the novel. However,  I personally think his true love will eventually still go to ZM. I feel like deep down,  he is drawn to ZM because of her unconventional attitudes, just like YSS. She's not shy to express her likes and dislikes. ZM can push all his buttons and drives him crazy with her teasing while making him fall deeper to her charm hahaha:tounge_wink:, but he also can trust her judgment and her decisions. They are equal and they can be themselves, which includes being angry with each other, bickering, and scold each other.  With ZM,  he doesn't need to tip toe around her feeling since he knew she's not typical shy lady that hung her head, hold her laughter and strictly stick to decorum (no offense please..by no means that I think it's wrong to stick to proper etiquette. Everyone needs boundaries. As a girl, I just personally prefer bolder lady  haha)   No worry if any wrong move can set her to a crying jealous mess :sweatingbullets:.  ZM is bold, she's confident, she chase her dreams. I feel that  She's even braver than me :D That's why I always love ZM-WJ ever since 86 versions.

Their relationship are just like YSS-ZCS. Like father,  like son I guess hahaha :D

Agreed on everything you said about the OTP, WJ can be himself when he's around MM.  She's the only one who can challenged him to the point where he threaten to kill her, (love and hate) definitely not the other three ladies.

On WJ-ZR pair, I believe WJ can accept her as a wife, he had developed infatuation with her for 10 years.  If he marry her he will try his best to love and protect her for a righteous gentleman he is, keeping his promised.  Of course only if she still the same ZR before the GMD and Snake Island incidents.  But ZM is still his true love and occasionally he'll look at the bite mark and be miserable. :sweatingbullets:

I have to say that your thoughts are totally on point!

Some of my favorite scenes are their hot pot dates at the inn. Do you think their conversation together during their first date had a positive influence on ZM? I can’t remember the exact context, but WJ was talking about how he witnessed his parents commit suicide under the pressure of the sects. He remembers the exact faces of each person who took part of it, but sees no point in killing them for revenge as his parents would not come back. He realizes that revenge upon revenge is a just viscous cycle. ZM said that WJ can do that because he is a good person, but if it were her, if someone killed her father/brother, she basically said she would wipe out their entire family even friends…that would include ZR. WJ’s response was that if she did, he would not be her friend anymore. He would not see her anymore. If he did, he would not talk to her. It was a classic WJ response . ZM seemed to tone down her ruthless methods after that LOL. On their next date at the inn, she even lent her sword to free XZ of the chains upon WJ's request.

They both seem to have extreme personalities. WJ has a heart of gold while the early ZM was considered “evil”. WJ is not the sharpest tool in the shed (probably because he’s too nice for his own good), but ZM is just so smart that she sees through everything. It’s no wonder together they complement/balance each other.

I think that is one of the reason why ZM can forgive WJ and be together with him after ZYZ plotted killing her father.  Definitely fall under WJ's influence.

Which means we will get to see 4 uncut episodes!! Yeah!! That's alot to cover there!!

Yeah he even claim to represent Wuji father to object to the impromptu wedding with ZM. I was like, please!! Settle your family issue first!!

I wonder what are they going to cut to let ZM appearance in episode 19.  I watched episode 6 today and it ended just like the mainland cut.  Hopefully they can cut most of ZZR scenes, I found her scenes at Er Mei was rather long and boring.

The one that irks me more is the scene where ZWJ's uncle try to kill ZM in shaolin and the fact most of the Ming sect is dog piling on ZWJ. The fact that they believe Cheng Kun's words more than what they see with their own eyes regarding ZM-ZWJ just shows me how racist Ming sect are by this time. They rather believe a known despicable person all around that kill their leader, raping/killing XX's family and a freaking traitor to your people than ZM, just make me want to throw them all off a cliff:rage:

WJ's uncle get on my nerves, selfish and arrogance.  That's why I called him bastard and don't consider him to be WJ's close family member.  Think about the way he treated his own wife and daughter.  What right he had that he can be a father figure for WJ.  So not surprised that he want to kill ZM to avenge the death of his father.

Indeed, those Ming Cult's members really disappointed me.  I loves ZD in the beginning because he give us some comedy relief. Man,  he turn out to be an idiot to believed in Cheng Kun's lies and schemes. They almost forgot entirely how despicable Cheng Kun is.

Imo he might kill himself to apologise to ZM for not trusting her, just like his dad kill himself to apologise to 3rd uncle for his wife misdeed and not to burden Wudang. I mean ZM did say she was thinking of giving herself up to the government and actually go through with her execution before she got XX's hair. If WJ did marry ZR and found out the truth and ZM is dead he will feel so guilty he might as well be dead.

10000% agreed,  killing himself will end all the quilt and suffering he have for MM.
