  1. Kang Dong Won Explains His Standards For Choosing Films And Why He Cried At A Film Screening

    Kang-Dong-Won1-e1517948400649.jpg

Kang Dong Won appeared on SBS’s “Night of Real Entertainment,” where he spoke about his upcoming film “Golden Slumber” and his thoughts on acting.

“Golden Slumber” is a film about a package deliveryman who becomes falsely accused of assassinating a presidential candidate. It is based on the novel by Isaka Kotaro and a remake of the 2010 Japanese film of the same name.

Kang Dong Won began, “Eight years ago, I read the novel and suggested it should be made into a movie to a film company.” He revealed his thoughts behind choosing to appear in the film and said, “It’s not easy to escape once someone is falsely accused of something by a larger authority, but the process of his way of working it out was interesting.”

When the actor was asked to choose between looking good and acting well, he answered, “I’m an actor, so I’ll choose acting well.” The interviewer then told him that when Jung Woo Sung was asked the same question, he chose “looking good.” Kang Dong Won laughed and said that the two hung out together the previous night.

Kang Dong Won talked about his standards for choosing a film. He explained, “Regardless of the genre, I look at the completeness of the film script. I also look to see if it has mass appeal, if it’s worth conveying, and approach it very emotionally. I’m sentimental and cry a lot.”

    Kang-Dong-Won.jpg

Kang Dong Won was seen crying at a screening for his recent film “1987.” The actor explained, “I was really embarrassed about that, but that morning, I met with people who lived through that incident and that era. I met them that morning and cried.”

“1987” is a film about the June Democracy Movement in South Korea in 1987, when protests against the government heightened after a student activist was tortured to death during an interrogation by authorities.

About his biggest concern as an actor, Kang Dong Won said, “It’s a job that represents the times, so I want to become an actor who can give comfort and sympathy to many people.”

“Golden Slumber” will premiere in theaters in Korea on February 14.

Actor Kang Dong Won has become the next victim of Wanna One Park Ji Hoon's famous catchphrase, "Save you in my heart~"!

    j5a.jpg

Back on January 24, the lead actors of upcoming drama/crime film 'Golden Slumber' greeted viewers with a 'V Live' broadcast. Kang Dong Won, Kim Sung Gyun, Kim Eui Sung, Kim Dae Myung, and director Noh Dong Suk sat down for a chat with MC Park Kyung Lim about their new movie, their characters, behind the scenes episodes, and more.

Viewers watching real-time asked the cast members to show their aegyo with a continuous wave of "Save you in my heart"! MC Park Kyung Lim demonstrated for the guests first. (Previously, an interview Park Kyung Lim had with actor Ha Jung Woowent viral online, when Ha Jung Woo pretended like he knew how to do the "Save you in my heart" even though he had no clue.) And then, all the actors obliged to viewers' requests, despite the embarrassment!

Actor Gang Dong-won revealed the effort that went into starring in the upcoming thriller film “Golden Slumber” in an interview broadcast live via Naver’s V app Wednesday.

While talking about Gang’s role, the interviewer asked, “Gang Dong-won’s appearance is usually never ‘ordinary’… but in the poster you look very ordinary. What did you do to look like this?”

“To look ordinary, first I gained 5 kilograms. I tried to understand the character,” Gang replied.

“I guess netizens are looking up the meaning of ‘ordinary’ now,” the interviewer teased.

With a star-studded cast made up of Gang, Han Hyo-joo, Kim Eui-sung, Kim Sung-kyun, Kim Dae-myung and Yoon Kye-sang, “Golden Slumber” tells the story of a deliveryman who gets blamed for the assassination of a presidential candidate.

In the film, Gang plays the deliveryman Kim Gun-woo.

The film is scheduled to hit cinemas here on Feb. 14.

  6. ‘Golden Slumber’ portrays an ordinary man caught up in extraordinary events

The novel “Golden Slumber” by Isaka Kotaro, follows a man caught up in a politics-based conspiracy, fighting for his life. While this may sound Jason Bournesque, it is really a tale about humanity.

Noh Dong-seok, director of the Korean movie adaptation of the “Golden Slumber,” said that his movie’s focal point is that the hero -- framed as a terrorist -- is an everyman.

“The person embroiled in such a massive incident is not an action hero, but just an ordinary guy. The point of my directing was to let the audience feel that any of them could be in (protagonist Kim Gun-woo’s) shoes,” Noh said in a press conference for the movie held Wednesday in Seoul.

    restmb_idxmake.php?idx=60&simg=%2Fcontent%2Fimage%2F2018%2F01%2F21%2F20180121000031_0.jpg

Kang Dong-won plays Kim, a wholesome, likeable worker at a package delivery service who gains unexpected fame when he saves pop star. His life changes abruptly when an explosion kills a presidential candidate in a terrorist attack, and he is blamed for it.

“(My character) propels the plot forward, so I worked on allowing the viewers to liken themselves to Gun-woo as much as possible,” said Kang.

The actor, who has appeared in socially-conscious films like “1987: When the Day Comes,” said that he felt that he movie would be relevant among Korean people. He said he is the one who proposed to the production company that it be made into a film.

“The message was clear and I felt like it would be interesting if it was made into a film here. ... I had a sense of duty as to accurately deliver the novel’s message to the audience,” he said.

Noh said that he felt the need to reflect Korean society for the audience to really follow the story.

“At the same time, I wanted to retain the original story’s idea: The fear an ordinary citizen feels within a huge system, about who can be on one’s side,” he said.

As in the novel, several of his friends are find themselves in danger as he runs for his life. Han Hyo-joo, Kim Sung-kyun and Kim Dae-myung plays his friends Sun-young, Geum-chul and Dong-gyu. As is the book, the movies is more about the friendship than the actions, shown in Sun-young’s line “He didn’t ‘used to be’ my friend. He still is.”

The stressed that the music will play a big part in conveying the message about friendship and nostalgia.

“Golden Slumbers,” off “Abbey Road” album by The Beatles, reminisces upon the bygone days, recorded in the legendary group’s final years together. It was remade for the purpose of this movie, sung by K-pop star Lee Hi and Kang Seung-yoon of Winner.

Production staff said that The Beatles’ song represents the nostalgic factor prominent in the movie, while tracks by Korean artist late Shin Hae-chul will represent the friendship among the characters.

“Golden Slumber” opens in theaters on Feb. 14.

Top Korean actor, Gang Dong-won will star in “Tsunami LA,” a disaster action movie to be directed by Simon West (“Tomb Raider,” “Con Air”).

The film, featuring a massive tidal wave that hits Los Angeles, is to be produced on a budget of $55 million through Hannibal Classics and Foresight Unlimited. It is now in pre-production in the U.K. and will begin lensing in March, 2018. Release is set for 2019. Hannibal Classics and Foresight handle international sales.

Production is by Richard Rionda Del Castro (“USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage,” “Rage”), Moshe Diamant (“The Black Dahlia”), Michael Tadross, Jr. (“Gangster Squad”) and Mark Damon (“Lone Survivor”).G

Gangstarred in two of Korea’s top-grossing films of 2016: “Violent Prosecutor” and “Master” as well as 2015 hit “The Priests.” His acting awards include the Star of Asia prize at New York Asian Film Festival for his role in “Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned.”

“I found the script very interesting when Hannibal first showed it to me. Also, people of my generation all have a special reminiscence about West’s ‘Con Air’,” Gang told Variety. “And it is a rare opportunity obtain a leading role in a Hollywood film on my international debut.”

“I am very excited to be the one to present this accomplished actor to the rest of the world in such an exciting project,” said West in a statement. “Our goal is to make a movie that reflects and celebrates the diversity of Los Angeles in a way that thrills worldwide audiences. West and I really wanted Gang as a co-star for this adventure. We will round out the cast with talented actors from all over the world, including the U.S., Europe, Australia, China and Brazil.”

He is currently shooting Kim Ji-woon’s Korean adaptation of the Japanese animation, “Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade,” which will wrap shooting in February. Gang has two other Korean films to be released next year.“

If I get good results in Hollywood, that means I can help Korean films get bigger budgets when I join them [as bigger casts attract bigger investments],” Gang said. Gang is represented by Gurkin Asia for “Tsunami LA” and managed by South Korea’s YG Entertainment.
