  1. Choi Moosung’s (Taek’s Dad) Starnews Interview

    http://entertain.naver.com/ranking/read?oid=108&aid=0002484551

    About the husband:
Since I’m Taekie’s dad, I want Taek and Deoksun to end up together. But Junghwan is good too. Honestly, I want Deoksun to be with the guy she likes.”

About Park Bogum and Ryu Joonyeol:
“Bogummie and Junyeolie both get into character well. Bogummie’s like that because of his character, but in real life, he’s really cheerful. He calls me ‘Dad’ - it’s cute. I think Bogum and Junyeol are both good hoobaes and actors. If the chance arises, I want to do another project with the both of them. Even when Bogummie stands still, he has the charisma to convey his emotions, and Junghwanie is strong and doesn’t get pushed aside. If I was a director, I’d cast the both of them too.

About who he’d want as a daughter-in-law in real life of the four female characters:
I like Deoksunie - it’s enjoyable to watch her. She smiles often and the way she talks is so pleasant. In my home, that kind of character would fit right in. I don’t think Bora, Mi Ok or Jahyun’s personalities are weird either though - they’d all make good daughter-in-law.

    To the viewers:
“I wish people wouldn’t get caught up in just finding Deoksun’s husband. It’s important to find her husband, but I hope people watch over the other characters as well. Aren’t you curious about how things pan out for Jungbong, Dongryong and Noeul in the future? For me, I’ll be curious about whether Jungbongie gets accepted to university until the moment his story ends.

omg, good idea. Those who are up to it should throw out their predictions. It might be kinda fun! I mean, what's the point of being on an uncertain ship if we can't laugh a little? It'll be interesting to see which of our predictions came true!

OKAY, here are my predictions for ep. 13-14:

    • something really big (and possibly traumatic) is going to happen at the end of episode 14. Something that'll justify a sudden 5-year time jump. It may be something so bad that the characters are left picking up the pieces, and the story cannot reconvene until the year 1994.
    • Taek will find out about JH-DS
    • It'll be revealed that Taek knew about DS's crush on SW
    • A kiss between JH-DS ... maybe even between TK-DS?
    •  Ssangmun-dong neighborhood possibly uprooted at the end of episode 14, with some families moving away.
    • BR-SW relationship troubles; a possible (temporary) breakup?
    • Bwahaha, someone already mentioned this -- but DR and TK going to the army together?! How amazing would that be?
    • another flashback scene for TK & DS

*IF* all the water symbolism (lol, remember the fish guys? And 'Taek' 沢 has a radical for "water" built into the hanja) is intentional on the part of the PD/writer, then we've got a nice message here: water changes form over time and over seasons, but it is without beginning and end, and is thus eternal.

The following comes from the delulu side of my fangirl brain:

    tumblr_nz2sy8stsR1rwtdpoo1_500.jpg

Closeup of "The Picture". I'm pretty sure the production team just used a random picture as a stand in to avoid giving clues ... but to my eyes, doesn't the grayish/white color palette look interesting? We KNOW that the event has to have happened Jan. 1989. IF the picture isn't a random stand-in, we know it's not either of the on screen "official" JH/DS TK/DS pictures; both have strong color backgrounds (one deep blue, one bright red).

LOL but you know what else happened Jan. 1989? The beach scene, chingus!

    beach.jpg

Isn't the color scheme pretty close to that picture Lee Mi Yeon is holding? LOL I'm kicking myself here, because they didn't have a camera with them, and there's no indication how a picture could have been taken.

  4. @mustardmaimai Your analysis is so beautifully written I can't even--

As a fellow twenty-something looking back at the teens, your post made me nostalgic and happy in the best way possible. I'm going to be disgustingly cheesy and quote Wordsworth: "Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind; In the primal sympathy which having been must ever be; [...] In the faith that looks through death, In years that bring the philosophic mind."

Your "philosophic mind" when you analyze both JH and TK has a kind of insightfulness made luminous by experience-- and a generosity made gentle by retrospection. It's so lovely to read; I'm feeling a case of sniffles :')

    Quote

"It is a love that is so deep it appears almost invisible. "

^^^ Someone hold me while I cry.

    --

Also, while in my heart I root for Taeksun, I'm completely with you in regards to Jung Hwan's family. Their interactions encapsulate all the worst and best parts of being a family, and they are a joy to watch on screen. I know in previous posts I've groused about JH or JH-DS being undeveloped. But I have not been fair. When it comes to his relationship with his family, JH is just as fleshed out as DS and TK. If DS marries JH, my biggest comfort is knowing that she'll be part of that wonderful family.

  5. Anyone read Korean? Someone kindly posted these links on the main thread:

There's some kind of conspiracy theory involving all the 4:33 clocks in Taekie appa's shop. LOL. Someone said it's because PD Shin admires 4-3-3 soccer formation.

  6. @gerimisore Darling, I can't believe your native language isn't English. You write so, so well! May I ask where you are currently? I sit before my laptop in St. Louis, USA.

Also, I just checked out your art. (+!!!) Your talent is truly marvelous. I love that your drawings are not direct copies of existing pics-- you take a character, capture their essence and spirit, all while showing your own unique style. :) please draw some DS/TK art if you ever have the time!!

[omg, and your photography. It's hurts to look at it ... that's how beautiful they are :')]

  7. @hafunohane OMG your post about episode 0!!!!

    I worship you. The end.

    Edited to add:

Also, when I watched episode 0, I was struck by the character introductions and how Taek is the ONLY character not mentioned to have a relationship with DS. This was the sequence:

    1. DS

    2. SW - we are told he and DS *may* become first loves

    3. JH - we are told he and DS have a 'charged' bickering relationship

    4. DR - we are told he and DS are derp soulmates *insert dance scenes*

    5. TK - we are told how hard PBG prepared for his role. No mentions of his relationship with DS ... EVEN THOUGH now we know they have the deepest childhood bond of all.

    -

Do I smell a twist? Oh yes, indeed!

  8. @mustardmaimai Omg, welcome!! Though this thread was started by @hafunohane only 9 days ago, I think it's no small accomplishment on our part to have drawn so many different voices and opinions so quickly. I hope people keep jumping onboard! Someone here mentioned that we're humble. It's true. Someone mentioned that we are comfortable laughing at ourselves, and at our at times adorably hopeful theories. I think that's true too. Because Taek was so late in entering the "otp race", I think many of us aren't obsessed with "OMG HE MUST BE THE HUSBAND. OR ELSE.", rather like @mustardmaimai @liteulkwin and many others wrote, we are bound by our love for Taek, Taek's characterization, DS as an individual, TK-DS and their natural bond/chemistry, and by our appreciation of the show itself.

Thank you EVERYONE for your wonderful posts. The theories, the analytical 'essays' :), the jokes, the anxious worries… everything! You girls make my day every day. No really. As soon as I wake up, I grab my tablet and start reading all the new comments. ;)

@mustardmaimai makes a good point … 'otp'-hood is only a corner of the human existence. I personally would never be happy with a romantic relationship that compromised family, friends, and sense of self. My problem with conventional kdramas is that OTP is presented as the 'end all be all', when my experience as a dating 20-something tells me that is totally unrealistic and ridiculous. The strength and charm of AM 1988 so far is that OTP is not front stage and center. My love of Taek stems from the fact that we learn just as much about his life as we do about his love for DS. And like @mustardmaimai wrote, the many relationships presented in the show (the parents' marriages, BR-SW, Taekie appa-sunwoo omma) are just as relatable and moving. So long as the writer keeps on developing Taek as a character, and provide him with a full & rewarding life, I'll be okay if JH-DS turns out to be the 'main otp' after all.

And here we arrive at the crux of the problem (for me personally): the idea of a "main otp'.

I like JH as a character. And I especially adore his family. But I do wish the JH-DS line wasn't so anxious about delivering all the "skinship" fans could possibly want, and focused instead on believable developments we can wrap our emotions around.

We see this over and over again in kdramas, and, to an extent, in the JH-DS line: two people who've previous not shown interest in each other are brought together by a strange conspiracy of 'god knows what' forces. Oops! why are we squished together by accident even though the alley has more than enough space for us to spread out? Oops! why did our basement floor crack just so we can live together? Oops! did i really actually rip your shirt on the bus? Oops! how come I never knock just so I can catch you half naked! Oops! I need to pee and somehow sleepwalk into your bed too?

It's charming when people are given a *chance* to be together by a mysterious working of fate. But for it to be convincing and carry narrative power, it can only happen once or twice, and cannot be the driving motivation behind a relationship. When the plot keeps on throwing out all these convenient excuses to bring otp together, then we traverse into fan-servicing and lazy writing. It takes on the appearance of an elementary school theatre production …. in which the stars and sun move across the stage dangled by visible threads. Or, in other words, the dreaded 'deus ex machina'.

I also super agree with everything @mustardmaimai wrote about Taek as a character. I love that, despite some consistencies (his kindness, his adoration of his friends, the tenderness with which he treats DS), he is essentially a body of contradictions as well. I find that SUCH good writing. What is 'personal identity' anyway? I mean most of us commit to a set of beliefs ('I want to be a good person', 'I am hardworking and ambitious'), but outside of these commitments we are so complicated and varied as *people*. Who of us isn't everything all at once? Someone good at math may be directionally challenged. Someone who is generous and a good father may be cheating on his wife. A shy wallflower may be outspoken and eloquent amongst friends. In this sense, Taek is marvelously captivating and believable to me. You can never *pin* him on a single description. Or, as Walt Whitman wrote, "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes."

  10. Also, guys don't worry about that article. If we encounter an iceberg, it won't be because of that thing. The article is either

    a. fake (notice the wording: "In a post of that seems to have been written by a staff member of “Reply 1988,” the writer compliments Park Bo Gum...")

    b. planted by the production to troll audiences

c.written by a staff member who of course has no access to the future script.

But seriously though, for something as important as Who is the Husband, I very very very much doubt that the drama writer would leak it out to the production staff. It's supposed to be a tightly guarded secret anyway to keep people guessing, keep ratings high, and build suspense/momentum.

    --

As for whether Taek is going to be Chilbong no. 2 .... my thought is a big no.

I never watched 1994, so many thanks to @hafunohane for summing up the catastrophe that is Chilbongie. Like hot dayum, dude's trajectory was brutal. I felt uncomfortable and sad just reading about it alone. It's disappointing that the writer created a character just to service the main OTP and play with the audience's (ultimately misplaced) hopes.

TK/Chilbong are alike in this regard:

    1. Famous / well-regarded
    2. fairskinned, handsome (JH is too, but I guess he's supposed to be "scary looking" in the story)
    3. sad backstory

But to me, isn't it clear that similarities between Taek and Chilbong is only skin deep? I mean look at all the ways the writer is already changing our perceptions of Taek:

    1. Taek's sad backstory is kind of not exceptional, in that Sunwoo also lost his dad. Although Taek lost his mom, but we find out that his relationship with Dad is awesomesauce and oh-so-cute. When the show first began, TK & dad were shown to be quiet and almost awkward, so a lot of people assumed they have a dysfunctional relationship (or that dad resents TK for some reason related to Mom!). The writer clearly built on this for the purpose of a reversal, because the heart of episode 7 was all about TK & Dad's warm, absolutely-not-dysfunctional relationship. Compare this with Chilbong's entirely sad relationship with his parents.
    2. Taek was initially presented as an outsider, much like Chilbong. BUT! then we find out he's like an improv comedy crew with everybody, and the entire neighborhood looooves him. Compare this with Chilbong spending his birthday alone. I'm confident no one would ever forget Taek's birthday.
    3. Taek is so going to get a new family. And cuddle with Sunwoo every night.
    4. Taek's relationship with DS is nothing like CB's with NJ. Hell, in their romantic styles, JH is closer to CB than Taek. Our baduk boy has a balanced life and he is not pushy with his feelings.

So it seems to me that every episode, the writer the showing/enriching Taek's connections to everyone in the neighborhood, and fleshing out his life as a complex character. Even if he doesn't marry DS, I'm pretty sure he'll live a good life and won't be "chilbonged".

  11. @ninaanin @.crestfallen. THANK YOU for your posts. I'm so happy people feel welcome and comfortable here!! :):) Let's channel Taek's kind spirit and keep making this forum a safe, lovely space where everyone can chime in. It doesn't matter if you're "neutral", think Deoksun should commit polygamy, ship TK/DS but don't think he's the husband, ship JH/DS but love TK anyway, want to enjoy the Taektanic but don't want to drown with it, etc etc etc... As someone mentioned, we're the underdogs with literally nothing to lose. So let us at least have a massively fun party on our luxurious cruise-liner ;) After all, the Taektanic is supposed to be one hell of a big ship; there's space for everyone and their college roommate here.

  12. @liteulkwin Oh gosh, I agree with you completely. The mind is powerful at justifying about everything under the sun. So while I hold a small glimmer of hope for TK-DS, I've long prepared myself for JH being end game.

Your comment about the husband promise ("we'll make it really obvious this time") is really interesting! This is exactly how I've kinda interpreted the romance all along until today (LOL ... too much photographing = delusions galore?). Because JH looks, acts, and speaks like the modern-day hubby, I thought from ep. 1 that there wouldn't even be a husband hunt, because the resemblance is so similar it's like a joke (they even wear the same gray shirt - black pants outfit!)

When Taek entered the running in ep. 6, I was only mildly surprised (the milk scene in ep. 2 kinda hinted to me that he'd have a crush). But I was mostly sad at that point, because I was afraid his awesome characterization would be reduced to hopeless second lead (i.e. the 3rd reiteration of Taewoong and Chilbong). By that point, Taek had become my fav character. I play a little baduk myself, and felt kinda mad they'd reduce such an awesome baduk master into sad second lead.

I approached ep 7 with a mindset of "too bad Taek is going to get chilbonged, but there's no way I'm going to fall for their husband game antics." But somehow, between ep 7 and 10, Taek's character became way more interesting and developed than I'd ever hoped for, .... and so I got roped in. *SIGH*

On a meta level, there are two ways to interpret the current setup:

    1. The 1988 team really means it when they say they'll make it obvious this time. 1997 & 1994 were such ratings successes that they won't mess with the formula. They'll try to improve it, but the fundamental structure will not change. You know that game JH's dad played with Miran? The finger in mouth thing? He did it exactly THREE times. Same with DS and TK at the beach. One can interpret this as, "are you fangirls so stupid as to fall for it over and over? I told you it was obvious!"
    2. The 1988 team is too smart to rely on the same formula the third time, and not expect it to be tired/cliched/predictable. No one answers when you call wolf for the third time. Taek's very limited screen time in the first episodes is a strategic choice. The writer purposefully introduces a sheep in wolf's clothing-- Taek may seem like Chilbong/Taewoong at first, but he evolves into the lead. That smoking scene was pure subversion.

It'd be pretty cool if the latter happened. I'm not holding too much hope, simply because well ... kdramas aren't really subversive and surprising; what they do well is dress up the same old tropes in ever more shiny veneers. BUT if it does happen, AM 1988 will be forever badass in my book for dismantling a whole decade worth of kdrama plot infrastructure (you know, that ridiculous 4-player team with the OTP flanked by annoying triangles).

  13. @liteulkwin

I'm "Yvian" on Dramabeans, and this whole time I've been commenting the same thing-- that in my mind JH is 100% the husband, though my heart belongs to Taek. Jung Hwan being the husband almost seems *too obvious*, and so I didn't want to be that delulu fangirl hoping Taek-ah is end game only to get Chilbonged hard.

But today, I had to spend 6+ hours photographing/cataloging artwork for work, and during this zen-like state of mind it occurred to me that Taek is not necessarily the "obvious" second lead. And that the whole set up thus far with JH is so scripted it almost seems like the writer/PD is purposefully setting us up.

BUT MAYBE NOT. We have to keep in mind that kdramas are conservative, repetitive, and derivative. JH would be a 3-peat in terms of the romance setup, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 1988 team chose to stay with what has been proven to bring in ratings.

Basically we're half way through the show. The next two episode will tells us for sure if Taek even has a chance.

For me to believe Taek could be the husband, the following CANNOT happen in the next two episodes:

    • Noble idiocy from Jung Hwan
    • A childhood flashback / back story for JH & DS
    • Decreased character development and/or screentime for Taek
    • DS continuing to treat TK like a baby/puppy/little brother, and seeming romantically disengaged.

^^^  If any of the above occurs, it's basically over. Taektanic will sink for sure.

For me to believe Taek could be the husband, the following should happen in the next two episodes:

    • Taek is revealed to know about DS's crush on SW. Come on.. dude isn't oblivious. He WAS THERE during the pizza scene, when DS encouraged SW to confess during the first snow with those wide eager eyes. I mean, isn't that why Taek confessed during the first snow?!
    • an umbrella scene between Taek & DS (not *necessary*, but definitely helpful)
    • an indication that DS isn't indifferent to Taek, and possibly sees him as a man. A scene with some sexual tension would be greatly helpful, LOL.
    • Taek not acting like some oblivious second lead chasing blindly after the girl.
    • some further developments in Taek's character, to show that he's capable of speaking and acting like modern-day husband (who, to be honest, currently acts like JH's carbon copy).
    • Edited to add:
    • Gesture(s) of care from Taek. So far it's been DS who's been protecting him. A reversal would be awesome. (credit: @liteulkwin )
    • Taek discovering JH's feelings. Or Taek discovering DS's (possible) feelings for JH. And instead of acting like psychotic determined second lead, he'll back off and date other girls.
  14. I for one will be pretty frustrated if Jung Hwan is end game, simply because it would be like chugging stale milk:

Yoon Jae - Trash - Jung Hwan = Bicker, bicker, bicker

Yoon Jae's brother - Chilbong - Taek = famous dudes who are human obstacle courses to keep the otp apart

I really hope the writer will evolve this time, and won't rehash the same old cliches.

But PROBLEM IS (and I posted this question on the reply 1988 forum), aren't Kdramas pretty cut-and-dry when it comes to OTPs? Like the stated leads will always get together, without exception. In AM 1997, Jung Eunji & Seo In Guk were billed as the leads; and then in 1994, Go Ara & Jung Woo were also listed as leads and ended up married.

I'm asking because Taek is my favorite, and I think it'd be unexpected, brilliant writing to reveal him as the husband (plus dark!Taek is hot as hell). But at the present I think that's 100% wish fulfillment on my part, simply because Ryu Junyeol is listed on all the websites as the male lead (second name after Heyri's Deok Sun).

So isn't is guaranteed that Jung Hwan is end game? What's the point of the PD throwing a bunch of red herrings when the kdrama casting system never lends itself to any ambiguity? Has anyone ever seen a drama where the "official" listed second lead actually got the girl?!
