[Anime/Manga/Manhwa recommendations thread]

hey i haven't been keeping up with the manga/anime scene since Death Note and Nodame. What manga is in right now?

Could anyone reccommend a good historical, samurai shonen manga like Kenshin and Peacemaker? Or a psych thriller like Liar Games and Death Note? Or something music related like Piano No Mori & Mozart doesn't write lullabies?

Dunno about what's in right now, but I hear a lot of people recommending Skip Beat. It's about a girl who gets into the entertainment industry so she can get revenge on her first love. I personally don't like it though.

For Historical/Samurai Shounen

If you like comedy...Gintama (gag manga). It's set in historical Japan that's been taken over by aliens but it's like modern Japan because the aliens brought technology. It follows the everyday life of a former samurai turned freelancer Gintoki who runs an odd-jobs business with his two quirky subordinates from finding their client's missing cat to getting mixed up in a war between the aliens and the Anti-Foreigner factions all while trying to pay their rent. It makes fun of a lot of stuff such as other manga, anime, and the Japanese lifestyle. This one's more funny if you watch it since the voice acting is so hilarious.

Like mei mei mentioned, Samurai Deeper Kyo. This one's more of a fantasy. It follows the story of Demon Eyes Kyo as he seeks to regain his body after his soul was sealed inside the body of his rival, Mibu Kyoshiro.

For realism, Blade of the Immortal (my favorite samurai manga). This one's a seinen though, but it's realllyyy good. It follows a girl named Rin who hires a former samurai as her bodyguard who's been cursed with immortality. They go on a journey to seek revenge on the man who killed killed Rin's parents two years ago.

Pyschological thriller

If you liked Death Note then you should definitely try the Code Geass anime. They're really similar. This one is more of an action thriller and it has some very nice twists. It's about Lelouch who is a Britannian prince that gave up his right to the throne after his mother was murdered, and has vowed to destroy his father, the Emperor, and Britannia. He gains an ability through the mysterious power of the Geass, becoming the leader of the resistance movement to fulfill his two wishes: to seek revenge for his mother and to construct a world in which his beloved sister Nunnally can live happily.

can some1 recommend me a story a romance story with a demon & a human haha ?

The one I could think off the top of my head is Chrno Crusade. Chrno Crusade follows the story of Rosette Christopher, and her demon partner Chrno. As members of the Magdalene Order, they travel around the country eliminating demonic threats to society, while Rosette searches for her lost brother Joshua.

Can anybody recommend me a manga/anime that has a lot of action, kinda fastpaced and kinda dark? Like with a more serious storyline?

For anime

I second Full Metal Alchemist. The story follows two brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who want to restore their bodies after a disastrous failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.

There's Mononoke which is a supernatural horror mystery. It's dark and has a serious storyline, but it doesn't have a lot of action. It's about an unnamed medicine seller who posseses a sword that can kill spirits.

I didn't bought the game and I want to ask (for who has buying it) if it worse ? Because I read on the web and the most sites says that the game is almost the same as the sims 2 exept somethings... Is it true ? Thanks for your reply ♥

I don't know what those sites are saying, but I think Sims 3 is a big improvement from the Sims 2!

What is the difference between; arigato/arigato gozaimasu and arigato gozaimashi!ta?

I know gozaimashi!ta would be past tense, but sometimes people say it in past tense form.

 

 

 

Does it matter? is there like a specific example to where you would use these two?

 

 

 

 

 

 

"Arigatou gozaimasu" is more polite than just saying "arigatou". The difference between arigatou gozaimasu and arigatou gozaimash!ta is the connotation. I'm just gonna copy and paste what I looked up: If something has already been done for you, "Arigatou gozaimash!ta （ありがとうございました）" can be used. It is often used by clerks at the store, or an office in the service industry. "Arigatou gozaimasu （ありがとうございます）" is a general way of saying "Thank you". It can be used for either something that will be done or something that has been done. When in doubt, just use "arigatou gozaimasu".

well, that's more of an English expression, so translating straight from those words probably wouldn't mean the same thing in Japanese. I may be wrong, but I would use "ganbatte" (がんばって). Translating between English and Japanese is frustrating sometimes, especially expressions. ^^;

 

 

 

omg, yes, kanji reading is really confusing sometimes. @_@ This is kind of off topic, but I was watching Eyeshield 21 and these American guys tattooed the characters for "big" and "useful" and "small" and "useful" onto their arms. Naturally, they thought the meaning was "big and useful" and "small and useful", but it turned out to be "feces" and "urine", lol. You really don't wanna make the wrong combinations with kanji. XD;

 

 

 

On the topic of kanji, I was wondering if 強魂 can be a real kanji combination or if it sounds awkward. I wanted to write "strong soul" and I just put the characters for "strong" and "soul" together. And if it is a real combo, would the pronunciation be "kyou tama"?

syou iu koto　（しういうこと） means = it just that way/it just happened that way

you got the second phrase's meaning correctly, but i think the original writing is "sou iu koto" (そういうこと). but i guess jaejoong was saying "shoyu koto". and yeah, shoyu means "soy sauce". XD

 

 

 

"itsu kaimash!ta ka?" - you don't need "ga" here. itsu is a question word and doesn't need a particle. if you wanted to specify a certain object, you can use "itsu (object) wo kaimash!ta ka?"

Yeah, I think this person originally wanted it to mean a passionate soul. Or maybe a strong-willed one? Something along those lines. I looked up some words for strong-willed, but there are so many and I would like something that sounds more natural in the spoken language.

 

 

 

For those words, would I just translate it as 熱情心 or 情熱心, then? Or how about 意思堅固心 (ishikengo kokoro/shin) for a strong-willed heart/mind? I'm not even sure how to pronounce all of these kanjis together correctly. ^^;

I'm trying to translate "heart of wildfire" into Japanese, but I'm not sure how because it's more of an English expression so it'd probably be awkward if you translate it word by word, naturally. I don't want it to mean the heart is literally made out of fire. ^^; I was thinking of "火の心", but it's probably incorrect. Not sure if you know about this firefox add on called rikaichan. All you gotta do is turn it on and it'll translate all those kanjis for you, when you hover over them.

 

 

 

ohh, i don't have firefox, but rikai does have a website. i knew of rikai, but didn't know it had that kinda function 'cause i never visit it, haha. thanks. now i can kinda decipher the paragraphs.
