All I know is they should have changed things...this chaos was avoidable.

    This is what frustrates me

When the show was initially announced it sounded like a really interesting piece in a quickly changing landscape that was South Korea in the 80's which is incredibly interesting from a historical standpoint. The cast is unbelievably stacked and you had a debut of a new actress as well. But then as plot details started coming out in more detail and it was obvious it was going to upset so many, they really should have changed it.

It's frustrating because without the historical inaccuracies, I thought the first two episodes were enjoyable and the quality of the production is so high (it looks so good from a technical and filmmaking standpoint). So much potential out the window because the writer couldn't be more tactful. It's now hard to watch this with all the controversy surrounding it as it's everywhere.

If they had dumped all the episodes in one go it would have been better. But every week this is on now there's just going to be trending articles around the controversy so it's going to go on for weeks and constantly dominate the conversation.

You now have people in the government posting about it giving the issues more exposure.

  2. Unsure what to make of this show still but will stick through it - definitely seems very Murder on the Orient Express so far.

Sol A's friend with the boyfriend who was wearing sunglasses in ep 4 - not sure if already discussed but in episode 3 I believe, the fat guy with glasses and the dead uncle in a flashback are in a car and the fat guy (apologise for the slightly offensive term but cannot remember who his character is) talks about how he doesn't like the idea of giving a speech to the school as his son didn't get in, even though his girlfriend did.

Does anyone think this girlfriend is the friend? And is the fat guy not the guy that the uncle was accused of bribing/was involved in that? (am I off here? the jumping around is confusing me).

I think every week we'll get motivations from different characters and I feel like hers will revolve around this - maybe the uncle was thinking of turning himself in or something along those lines, the guy heard about it and had his son coerce his gf into doing something. The relationship she has with her "boyfriend" seems very odd.

  3. Interesting first two episodes. I forgot Nam Joo Hyuk was in it until the last second of the 1st episode.

Was hesitant to give it a try at first and I can see some obvious tropes already forming but the characters/relationships are interesting enough for me to give it a few more episodes.

Suzy also looks so good in this. Her whole aura/visual is just great, hair up or down, fringe or no fringe, expensive or casual clothes, don't matter.

Were you expecting a Korean Dexter?

As promised, he was hiding a dark past and his wife suspected him, at least briefly, of being a serial killer. I think Do Hyun Soo is more interesting than a serial killer, even Dexter, but your mileage may vary.;)

I was just expecting it to be darker, but how the character turned out meant it hasn't been the case.

  5. Have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the last 2/3 episodes.

Feel like the show set up so many potential great character moments and developments and we just never got them.

Seemed like they forgot about Ji-hyuk's past and its impact on him and we got what, 5 minutes of attention on it in the last two episodes? They'd been building something up between him and the FL and they talked for not ven 5 minutes over the last two episodes? I'm more annoyed about the former as I feel like he had the grounding to be a really complex character with some good development points but it seemed like they stopped giving it any attention after 7/8 episodes. I also didn't like how people were towards Yoo Jung Seok, not just the characters (I get he was your boss but come on) but even the show was trying to push this angle that he was sort of a good guy - as if he didn't kill someone and then make an innocent man die for it. I get that they're showing the grey but that articular aspect I didn't think was well done.

Anyhow have to say, up to like episode 12/13, this was a solid 8.5/10 for me. I think the last quarter drops it to 7.5 though.

  6. Really enjoying this drama - I'm liking the plot driven and the character driven points, and whenever that happens I'm fully hooked.

Only six episodes left but so much more I want to see. Really want more character moments for the 3 leads.

Also as someone that actively avoids romances but likes some sprinkled around in shows, the light touch on that side is perfect for me as it's developing both characters in a sensible/realistic way and it isn't too overbearing.

Basically this show is hitting a lot of points for me.

how is he doing two dramas at same time? is one or both of the dramas pre-produced? not live shoot?

How on earth did I not realise that was the same actor - it's so obvious now that I've seen it mentioned itt

Also really enjoying this show, curious what the second half will build on.

Most annoying character for me so far is definitely the lady that lost the evidence for an hour in the first place and went on the stand at the end. Can't satnd characters like hers.

Also, I really wish we get more development/background on the young ML in the second half of the drama. Feel like his background could lead to some great character driven scenes. The mystery itself was never that interesting but I guess the show was never really about that.

  8. I'm enjoying it enough but it's very broad at the moment with its ensemble cast. Has been my issue with a few of the writers others shows and I don't think it works well enough in the 16 episode format for me. Like, Lost had a huge cast but you got a lot of episodes and everyone got multiple episodes dedicated to flesh out their story.

There's just a lot of characters at the moment and I just find myself disappointed with screentime

  9. The Crush OST is nearly no.1 on every Korean chart (just one chart left)

I feel like the second leads got screwed over with whatever changes they made to the script. I honestly have no idea what the point of them has been in the last few episodes, or what they're going to do in the finale. There's surely no way they were written to have this much insignificance in the last few episodes. I find myself fastforwarding their scenes as it rarely seems relevant

  10. A bit too much humour for me currently so happy to know it will get more serious.

SYJ's character also does feel a bit off to me (the disconnect between the successful businessman woman to what we've seen) but there's clearly more there so will wait for the character to be fleshed out more going by the epilogue in episode 2.

People have already sussed it out but she's definitely at least seen him in Switzerland performing probably, as that was the picture of him that she said "this person looks familiar"

Happy that HB decided to do another drama so soon (same with LBH), but the fact that it's with SYJ is extra cool. The original SK actress crush for me from watching The Classic and A Moment to Remember years ago. Couldn't finish her last show so hopefully this one is better

I think the story definitely suffers from being bound by historical events, skipping through history a bit too quickly and thus withholding a great deal of valuable context. Essentially we got cliff notes from episode 3 to 5, where, really, a great deal of things happened: Invasion of Liaodong. Coup. Beginnings of friction between Bang Won and Yi Seong-gye and co.

The real meat of of the war and the coupe wasn't really shown to us, so it feels like our characters we knew from first two episodes took a massive leap through time, through these historical events--and the end result is a bit disorientating. Hwi's characterization is the biggest victim of this. Bang Won's contribution to overthrowing the previous rule, feelings of betrayal lacked exposition. Hee Jai's journey in becoming the Queen's most trusted subject... Personally, I think Seon Ho's character arc actually felt the most coherent to me out of them all.

As of now, the first two episodes still remain to be my favourite episodes. I think the series really did start strong in establishing our three fictional main characters of different backgrounds and viewpoints of what 'their country' should be, and the premise of showing their journey during the transitional period between Goreyon and Joseon was really compelling, but you can't fit that in 16 episodes. So, instead we're getting snapshots of these characters throughout these historical events.

That being said I still thoroughly enjoy it for what it is. I do agree with you that the character development does leave a lot to be desired, and there's also times where I feel like things have happened off-screen and I wasn't told about it lol, but overall I still do think all our characters are surprisingly charismatic and I don't find it hard getting invested in them.

The cinematography, the set, the acting, the soundtrack are definitely the stronger aspects of the series and the overall packaging and presentation is quite stellar imo. But yeah, what can ya do if the character development and writing is becoming a deal breaker for you.

All the issues you've described are essentially why I dropped it as character development and writing are definitely deal breakers - shame it didn't change much in that aspect as the production quality was pretty amazing and I do like two of the actors in it, It is on Netflix so will maybe try and finish it some point in the future. Cheers for the detailed reponse.
