  1. hmm. Looks like my decision to avoid these episodes was prudent. Just finished reading the detailed recap at dramamilk and it made me snort with frustration. The only sliver of light I took away from the recap was that DH finally told Jae Hyuk that she would file a police complaint. I would have been elated if she had in fact made an official complaint but hey! baby steps.

From the pics released for tomorrow, it seems Do Hee will comfort Hae Kyung after his mother's passing away. Seeing one of the other BTS pic of NE and DH, I bet, No Eul is the one who calls DH and tells her to get her a*s over to HK's place.

At this point of time in the show, HK has done all the fighting for this relationship. It is time for DH to step up now. Does she fight for her happiness or give up and continue self sabotaging this relationship the way she has been over the past two episodes?

  2. I squarely blame the writers' incompetence. They keep going in circles regarding the exes. Wasn't yesterday's episode a sort of final closure to the Hae Kyung/No Eul's past  relationship? IMO, it was done nicely - No Eul was desperate for any sign but Hae Kyung shut her down for good. I even understood why he let her have his shoulder to mourn the demise of their past relationship. but hey! new episode just a day later and we are back to square one with No Eul's extremely shi*y actions.

As for Jung Jae Hyuk - very frustrating to see Do Hee play the noble liar for him. I would have understood if she had done this before her relationship with HK started but there is no excuse for this now.  She is now in a relationship with another man - why is she the one always holding back from HK? IS she still in Dinner Mate mode, thinking that she needs to keep personal things from a stranger? They are a couple now and she needs a harsh reality check on her actions.

  3. Been a long time since I logged in. You can guess by the display picture how long it has been.

Anyways, have been enjoying this show. Feels good to see a mature type of love story.

I know that we can't embed instagram posts anymore but I was very curious about 3 new stills of Do Hee. If anyone can link these pics here, I would be grateful. I found them on a seo ji hye fan instagram account named - peach1984_  They show Do Hee in the same dress that she is wearing while watching a movie with Hae Kyung. Looks like she is in her home but she looks afraid/angry and has a frying pan in her hand.

Scenario 1: Do Hee comes home from her job but Jung Jae Hyuk is waiting for her inside her own house. If you see the preview for Episode 11, there'a  quick frame of Jung Jae Hyuk sitting in a room and switching a lamp on and off. Confrontation happens, DO Hee leaves and ends up at Hae Kyung's home. watches movie with him but falls asleep because she is tired.

Scenario 2: Do Hee and Hae Kyung have movie night at his house, she falls asleep (sexy times may or may not happen), she comes back to her house early morning to find Jae Hyuk inside.

  4. I wanted to say a sincere thanks and a heartfelt goodbye to all the show's fans who frequent this thread. It has been a pleasure participating in the discussions, reading others thoughts and getting translations, spoilers and other info so easily.

I say this in advance because if the finale has a tragic ending in store for either EC or AS or both,  I don't think I will be entering this thread or post my comments at my other usual haunt at dramacool. It may sound irrational but IMHO, it is the best way to get over a show and try to move on from its tragic story line. Dwelling on it, rewatching the show's old episodes and participating in discussions only makes it worse (at least for me).

So, thanks again for everything.  I usually watch only two or three kdramas per year, so I hope to see you guys in the discussion threads of some amazing drama in the future.

    Last episode preview 1

    https://tv.naver.com/v/4153648/list/261357

scene: sun above mountain scenery, probably from train.

scene: fool-moron-loser having a drink together. They're laughing and clinking their shots

EC voice: Thou we walk our own path, we'll reach the same place.

scene: Japanese soldier clubs HS's head. HS already tortured. spewing blood.

scene: DM standing somewhere with both swords out.

    scene: EC aiming his gun.

scene: AS and RA in front of her in mountain. Joseon flag with bloody handprints flying.

scene: Gwansoo crying out "Righteous army" in front of former-King Gojong. Gojong crying.

scene: showing Hwang Eunsan, Smith, others

    scene: Train passing turnel.

scene: EC moving from train cars. passing Japanese soldier.

scene: EC's bloody hand, with bloodied chest area.

scene: somebody's hand with AS-EC ring, shirts seems to be AS's.

scene: EC sitting in front of Tokyo's photo shop, crying over their photo they took in episode 21.

EC voice: The last destination we'll reach, is probably somewhere between glory and sad ending.

    preview 2

    https://tv.naver.com/v/4153647/list/261357

All scenes are from the preview 1, but voice over is from AS.

AS voice: It was such a brilliant day. We were all flames, burned bright and turned to ashes. And we'll blaze up again.

As always, thanks for the translations.

Looking more and more likely that we will get a tragic ending. Maybe the writer will throw in reincarnation by showing a future timeline where these characters meet again in different lives, but tbh, I just don't care about future different versions/lives of these characters - because these new characters wearing the same faces will not be the ones we spent time with and emotionally cared about for the past 24 episodes. How can we even begin to care about them?

  6. Can anyone here help me, a complete ignorant, who can't tell the difference between languages - in the preview, we see Eugene sitting in front of a store, looking at a pic and crying. What is the language on the signs in front of that store?

We have a train journey in the finale, Ae Shin disguised in Western clothes, the young soldiers disguised in Japanese military uniforms, Eugene on the train and also Eugene with a bloody chest (https://imgur.com/a/8g68DtW ) on the train. I am expecting another time jump in the finale to 1909 - the year when Ito Hirobumi was assassinated.  He was killed as he arrived at Harbin Railway Station to meet a Russian representative to Manchuria. Could the train shown in the preview be the one going to Manchuria?

No AS in the preview but there's a very brief shot in the preview of a fair hand in what appears to be a white coat, wearing the ring - ( https://imgur.com/a/k7S0qHX ) the hand is too pretty and feminine to be Eugene's so it is definitely AS - what is interesting about this pic, is that behind this feminine wrist, is what looks like the elbow/part of the arm of someone else in a very light grey suit - that could definitely be Eugene  edit - I looked at it again and I don't think it is Eugene - it is just one person only, so most probably AS  - but mark this - I am 99% sure that this is again some fantasy and dream of either Eugene or AS as they lie(lay? what is correct here?) dying.  - edit - don't think it is a fantasy either because AS's wrist looks dirty and blackened on the bottom side - so this could be a part of a mission.

Defenseless Mr. Haengrang and Ms. Haman killed by a firing squad in the middle of the road. Is that Japanese translator the big rat!??  He took the 'wanted pics' of the RA to someone..

    Spoiler

Those deaths were so senseless. You bring them back from Shanghai to give them that treatment?

Looks like the photo posted by Lee Byung Hun showing the 4 of them wearing the clothes at the end of ep 22 (and onward), probably the selfie taken before filming the blown-up scene.

No matter what, into the flame we will go. Hope there will be some good scenes to gif in ep 23-24.

Not sure if this is confirmed, read on twitter that tonight's episode will be more than 1 hour (about 1hr 45min?) Anyone knows this for certain?

    1hr 45 min? O_O :scream:

Edit: Looking at the instagram spoilers and reading the recap at dramamilk, am I the only one who is finding this episode a bit underwhelming? Don't get me wrong,

    Spoiler

the notable deaths( and supposed major death) that happen

are extremely sad but this doesn't feel like the penultimate episode of a drama.

  9. Heading into the final two episodes, in your opinion, which characters among the main five are in the greatest danger of tragically dying and which of them have the highest chance of making it out alive by the end?

IMO, the person in least danger and the highest chance of making it out alive is Hui Seong.

Dong Mae follows next - there have already been way too many near death experiences with him, so I think he will live. It also gives him a chance to start anew, but now, fully a Joseon man.

Ae Shin is at third place. Yes, she is walking headfirst into danger, sniping enemies, planting bombs, getting injured, carrying a bounty on her head etc but even after all this, the show has emphasized through many other characters that she needs to live/has to be saved, so I believe that she will also make it out alive.

Kudo Hina has an 80% chance of dying. The preview of Dong Mae carrying her on the same beach show in E21, which is in the town where her mother is buried  and the shot of her lying against Dong MAe's arm makes me think that she is going to die from her injuries sustained by the Glory Hotel bombing.

The person with the highest chance of dying, the one in gravest danger, is Eugene. I have a bad feeling that he is not going to escape his journey towards the flame. He will either end up being a martyr for Joseon or he will sacrifice his life to save AS.

Text preview for episode 23..  is such a non-preview, but here it is.

Eugene and Dongmae found Aeshin and Hina among the blazing explosion.

Cruel fate befalls on those 2 men coming back to hellish Joseon...

'Please let her live, just for that, I'll go like wind"

    2.5 more days to go!

As always, thanks for the synopsis.

Cruel fate befalls on those 2 men coming back to hellish Joseon...

That second line is making me nervous.

Edit: I hope you keep a lookout for the synopsis of E24 too. I am really curious to see how they word it.

  11. Haven't seen anyone upload the E23 preview, so here it is.

    All credit to Sadgasna

Also, how cruel are they? They show Dong Mae rescuing Hina, they show even more DM/KN scenes (which Iwholeheartedly welcome)  but the sadists at TVN know exactly what to not show at all - and that is any EC/AS scene. UGH!!!

There's a quick shot of Eugene shooting Japanese soldiers in the hospital - is it where he takes AS in the first place? Dammit!! I am going to be so pissed if AS is unconscious and out of action for most of the episode.

Towards the end of the promo, we have Eugene saying , (and I got this translation from  a fan on twitter) - "You go save your Joseon and I will save you."  Right before he says this, we have a very short dialog by AS and no one has translated it . I would really appreciate it if someone here helps us out by transcribing the preview. Ahem!! Yo,  @mistymorning , where you at? :)

"You go save your Joseon and I will save you."

The pit in my stomach grows deeper.  Looking more and more likely that Eugene will end up sacrificing himself to save Ae Shin. I keep going back to that spoiler pic from many, many days ago - Ae shin in Western clothes at the train station - why is she alone? Where is Eugene?

    Spoiler

Spoiler Alert: Looks like there are two scenes  from E23/24 shown in this clip:

That Eugene and Hwang Eun San scene better not be cut from next two episodes.  Eugene is wearing his cap, he looks fine, his coat and shirt are not covered in blood - could this be a scene before he heads to Glory Hotel  at the end of E22? Or is this scene yet to be shown? Or is it deleted already and we are getting a glimpse of it in this special episode. So many questions.

Most important spoilery scene - very quick frame of the young noble soldiers dressed in Japanese military uniforms and they're inside the train.:open_mouth::scream:

Edit: One more, immediate aftermath of the Glory Hotel bombing+Eugene's VO:

More and more I get this feeling in the pit of my stomach that Eugene is the one who will die :(

i hope we will have ep 23 preview...i want a otp moment/scene at least....

I feel you. We are all desperate.

How we have been reduced to this? Leave alone the full episode, we are left hoping for at least breadcrumbs in the preview.  We all would like to see many EC/AS scenes in E23 (like the ones  in E21) but with the way things have been going, I have become so pessimistic that I am already expecting the reunion and the aftermath to be underwhelming.

Slightly off topic: I was wondering about the picture they took in Tokyo. The only way I see it being referenced again, is in the future with someone looking at it - either with sadness (EC or AS) or love (as in their child).

@marfisa  Kyle was the only friend Eugene has for a long time.  Someone to confide in and guided him as EG was struggling with his nationality.  It was meaningful to admit that he is moving forward as a person.  He is confident that his home is in America but knows home is not limited by his relationship with the country or the military (which he has lost ties with).  I was glad to see Eugene starts to see himself more than just a captain of the US Marine Corps. His past with America and the armed forces are an important make up of who he is, a history that he does not forget.  He is at peace with this personal conflict, the question of where his loyalty should lie.  He still identifies with being a US citizen but it is not all who he will be.

When I first started to watch Mr Sunshine, I had thought about how the drama would address the idea of immigrants and patriotism.  I am not sure what the ending will be for all of our characters but I feel that the question of patriotism and country have been answered through Eugene.  He feels a part of both countries.  The love and patriotism he has are for both US and Joseon.  I really like how the drama settles on the idea that patriotism is a personal choice and not be defined by your birthplace.

Fantastic elucidation of Eugene's state of mind regarding patriotism/loyalty and being at peace with his identity even without the crutch of being a soldier. Loved your explanation. :)

The valley was the dumping ground for dead slaves, so that's where Eugene's parents are. Graveyard we saw where Hunter Jang's maintaining was for the dead from past wars(with US and Japan). They seem to near, but not the same place.

For that voice over, that's the valley. (And that voice-over and the scene made me cry.. every time).

Ah! Thanks for the correction. That VO scene was indeed quite emotional.

    @lilyphenix , my apologies. :)

Hmm... I keep thinking of that piece of land.

Despite EC being a US citizen, he does own a land in Joseon Korea. I understand that he had asked for that mountain so that the servants who were buried there would have a place to rest, undisturbed, their graves unspoiled, but that still means that he has a place that is his, and where the RA used to go to honor their fallen own, too.  Is there a possibility that that's where they will hide for some time... maybe before going back to the US?

Are they not two different places? The mountain that Eugene got and the graveyard? I am sure they are different - when Eugene go it he had a Voice Over which said: Should I build a house here? Why would he think of building a house on a graveyard?

Also, the graves were unspoiled and peaceful even before Eugene knew of the place, so why would he ask for that place to keep it peaceful and unspoiled?

Is there a possibility that that's where they will hide for some time... maybe before going back to the US?

    Possible. Hopefully.

Well, article doesn't say anything about his role. People are speculating whether it'll be last emperor, or grown-up Domi. :)

And about the preview(for either later episode, or special), I trust no one.

Surely they will not show any new scenes in the special episode, right? So it has from E23.

Ah! So we have, grown up DoMi, last Emperor and future kid of protagonists  as possibilities. One of them correct or all of them wrong.

Kim Min Jae will make a special appearance in last episode. Another new character appearing in the last episode. Fans in Aeibo are speculating if he will be the offspring of one of the characters maybe Ae Shin and Eugene or Hui Seong and the former noble lady that he met?

    More details here

I will wager that it is EC/AS' kid.

I am beginning to think that Eugene will be a goner by the end. It is 1907 now and EC/AS reunite, maybe writer does another 2-3 yr jump to to incorporate total annexation, we find out they married and have a kid or AS is pregnant, stuff goes down, EC dies, AS escapes.

At a glance (on twitter if not mistaken) I read that he might be appearing as the last Emperor of Korea, Sunjong(?).

Hope @mistymorning can enlighten us on this, thanks in advance!

Ah! Just saw your post. I will take this rather than another flash forward far into the future showing a kid of EC/AS.

But I am wary of speculation about him being the last Emperor  - why? because the same speculation happened when that young actor was cast as one the young noblemen that Eugene sponsors/mentors.

  18. LALALALA. Previews are sneaky. I refuse to panic. Most probably, this is the immediate aftermath of the Glory Hotel bombing. The women are seriously injured and may have been carried to safety by the men, hence the blood on the men - looks like Ae Shin's left shoulder is bloody, maybe she was carried by Eugene in his arms hence the blood on the upper front side of his shirt. The other possibility is a gunshot wound to the chest of Eugene but I don't want to dwell on that. Edit: Wait a minute, the Eugene from the preview is wearing a cap and a dark coat but when he witnessed the hotel blow up, he wasn't wearing a cap and his coat was greyish. ARGH!!  Inner panic returns!!

Hina, though injured, seems fine, given the circumstances. There is a very quick frame where she is leaning on somebody's arm(DM probably) and she is crying yet still gives one of her trademark little smiles with that adorable pout of her mouth.

BUT DANGNABBIT!! Why are my fears about Ae Shin being unconscious turning out to be right? WHY??? WHY?

  19. I rewatched E22 and that 3 yr time jump rankled me again. It feels like the writer was more keen on incorporating historical events at the expense of the personal stories/journeys of the main characters - read Eugene - why else would he get stuck like a  rock in prison cell for three years, doing nothing to contribute to the story? Don't forget Dong Mae too - lying like a wasteman in an opium den in Manchuria .UGH!!!! What a waste of these two characters!! . For fans who have been watching purely for a fictionalized/ loosely based story on real events of that time, I don't think that the time jump and the fridging of Eugene (and DM) for three years was any problem at all. But for me (and maybe some other fans like me) who was/were watching for the personal element/facet of these fictional characters, it was quite jarring and disappointing.

@Preksha Shahal It can go either way but safe to go in fully expecting tragedy and a sad ending. That way, if we get something akin to a satisfying/happy conclusion, we can always be pleasantly surprised.

@q4q4 Another time jump? Be careful what you wish for because what if we flash forward to 1945? Eh? Would that do?  ;):)

So sorry if this was mentioned in the past but does anyone know which year Mr. Sunshine is supposed to end at? Was it 1907 or was it never specified? Just wondering bc I thought it would be interesting if they include the assassination of Ito Hirobumi

Also - did they mention what happened to Lord Jeung-Mun after he was rescued? I might have missed it

LJM went to Shanghai with Song Yeong.

Previously, we were under the false impression that the show's timeline was up to 1905. BUT, given the huge 3 yr jump they did in E22, anything else is possible now. Hirobumi was assassinated in 1909, so a further 2yr hop is nothing for a 3yr hop veteran like KES. ;):)
