  1. I like this drama, so much layers, like an onion! However there’s a few things I don’t like: the wig on HYX :expressionless: that long hair wig made her look 30s! She did not look University age at all whenever she has that long hair wig on, maybe it’s the makeup, but man, she looks old. The acting - I’m on the fence. While it’s not cringe bad, it’s not super good? The male lead is ok acting, the female lead is ok, too. She shines however on the last episode as CYR when she was revealing how deeply sad she is. That’s there an award winning performance, but the rest of the drama is pretty feel like every other Taiwanese drama lol.

i do like how this drama touches on teen suicide, a tiny bit of LGBT, and very intricate soul time traveling (because it’s very different than normal time travelling lol) that could do people head in. And with 13ep, it’s a good watch!

    Think not official records.

What is known is Fuheng's wife is said to the most beautiful (or at least one of) woman at that time. Not the "Erqing" as in the drama here. The rumor is Qianlong noticed her when she came to the palace for the Empress's birthday dinner. Then when she left the venue for a while, Qianlong followed her somewhere and.....u know.

Why people suspect about the son...is bcos Qianlong doted on him since birth aside from his own sons. Of course it could be just bcos he is cute or he is his nephew.

As for the Fucha Empress's death...probably not related bcos the timing was slightly off btw the events. But of course not sure when she found out (if really above is true). The more official reason was her body was weakened by previous illnesses, giving birth plus depression too (just a few months after her son died). They went on a long trip outside palace...and on historical record, Qianlong regret not knowing her full health status. She fell sick during the trip....they decided to take the boat...maybe to avoid the shaking of the carriage. But she died on the boat.

Yea, all speculation :) even the version I read said the wife noticed Qianlong like her, and kinda leading him on in a way/doesn’t mind the attention he gave her.

i don’t think the timing is off. It was said that the queen’s heart (her love for Qianlong) die after realising her husband vanished with her brother’s wife, then the multiple dead of her sons did her in. It’s totally understandable if your husband won’t let go of any woman of his desires and the children you love die before you. And it’s not just one child for her, it’s three, and some was so young. I would be heartbroken if that happens to me :(

Oh this is a spoiler for me but its fine and i hv guessed it correctly that the baby is fu heng's brother child.

In history though, it’s said that Qianlong purposely used the queen to create a party, to get her brother’s wife into the palace, then make her drunk, and slept with her. This day one would call it R, anyway, the queen found out, so she was heartbroken then her last son also die, double heartbreak were what cause her death (obviously I only read off a site, whether this is true, not sure)

The story n pace of Yanxi is more additive than fuyao to me. Hope i m not saying this too early because i still hv 20+ episodes to go :P

Lol I think you are pretty safe. I know people who have seen to 40 and they said no boring bit! And I haven’t seen one bad article about Yanxi lol, not in term of plot drag or predictable or stalemate

  5. Ok, let me clear this up: the leak that is known to the Vietnamese is only up to 57, there was no more after that. After the leak, all the Vietnamese online sites have pulled off Yanxi because the broadcast station has bought the rights and only up to ep14, so they pulled it down and wait until the tv station catch up, which will be the end of September.

the company that has the rights to Yanxi to release it online has not made any comments, the Chinese company doesn’t seem to press any charges or take any actions either, so all a bit weird?

Also, the sub takes 1hr or less including uploading time per episode, that’s how fast the Vietnamese can do the subbing. As soon as they get their hands on the leak video, they can sub very fast.

The Rise of Phoenixes 天盛长歌 has been on air for two nights in a row, but both tv and online viewership have fallen below expectations. Upon its premiere, the show garnered CSM52 ratings of 0.558% and CSMNationwide ratings of 0.732%. Day 2 pulled in CSM52 ratings of 0.539% and CSMNationwide ratings of 0.688%.

For comparison's sake, current primetime leader Heavy Sweetness Ash-like Frost has CSM52 ratings around 1.3%, but perhaps more surprising is that The Rise of Phoenixes also lost the lead in CSMNationwide, a ranking that has generally been favorable to primetime dramas on Hunan TV.

The dismal numbers haven't gone unnoticed as the show released a statement to say that within the past two days, The Rise of Phoenixes has accumulated 7.7 on Douban and 8.8 in Maoyan, the highest for a historical drama produced in China this year. The show also did a poll via weibo that had an 84% approval rating from viewers.

However, viewership seems to be reflecting the opposite which leads the three production companies of the drama to speak up and conclude that the current ratings and ranking are not what the show deserves. The statement goes on to share that inflating viewership ratings is a predominant problem in the television industry. Advertising revenue, a show's performance, the production team and the cast's market value are all hostage to fake views.

The Rise of Phoenixes will not participate in inflating viewership no matter the pressure. Instead, they hope that everyone can see their sincerity in making a drama that has real performances, real voices, real sets and real emotions.

There’s a picture of the statement in the article.

Well this definitely sucks :( I hope more people will tune in once the story gets rolling.

I don’t think you need to worry. My guess on why it has low rating so far is because of lots of shows this year promise grandeur and deliver peanuts :) most recently the recent finished LoF. Then coming off this drama is supposed to be the descendants of LoF but with zero fantasy elements, alienated both the fan and the not fans of the drama. Many is wait n see or wait for a few more episodes before trying :) if the series is good, it will get there :)

I'm really interested in the comparison between this drama and "ruyi royal love in the palace"....at a first glance it seems like the evil charters in yanxi palace are good characters in ruyi, while the good characters in ruyi are evil in yanxi palace.

Well according to history, why the second empress (Charmaine’s character or Zhou Xun’s character in Ruyi) lost favour was very mysterious, no one knows. There was a famous record of how one governor told the emperor to give her the burial of the queen because her title entitle her for that, and he ended up got exiled. After 10 yrs, Qianlong ended his exile, but the dude didn’t learn, and told the emperor again to give her a historical record, he got executed!

so Ruyi is trying to spin the story as she was good but then something bad happen to her? Or some misunderstanding that Qianlong just couldn’t forgive her. While Yanxi is painted her as an evil person and Qianlong found out in the end and that’s why he hated her until after she die. Also Ruyi is spin the most beloved first queen into an evil manipulative person, while history does show Qianlong loves her a lot, and she’s well known for being very good and humble. However Qianlong’s love for her to me is questionable. The article I read said he would visit her quarter (or place where they have her shrine) every year to talk to her, write poem to her, etc. however, the poem was about him regret and feel remorse of indirectly causing her death. Anyway, not saying he doesn’t love her, but it felt that love got deepen because the emperor felt like he caused her death

  8. Not to praise it, but just to add on to what Cedric Ong said to give you a context. Douban score, while there is some controversy about it (like any rating system, can be manipulated), if higher than 6, the drama is considered pretty decent. So normally you think 5-6 is quite bad out of the 10 scale, but douban is quite harsh, so anything above 6 is considered worthy of watching. Meanwhile, if you look at viki’s score, which is pure rubbish, a rubbish drama can still score a 7 or and 8.5+ lol. Most of the dramas are rated 9+ making it impossible to tell which one is rubbish lol!

currently the drama is still going strong despite being half way through, however it has deviated from the original source, so I guess we have to wait and see how well it actually is!

Well some xianxias have been made the issue is that not all of them are high quality xianxias or have been able to air this year. I fell in love with xianxias during Journey of Flower. I would say TMOPB and Journey of Flower are some of the best xianxias out there. I hope that this adaptation turns out as good.

I consider those more wuxia than xianxias since those are more focused on the martial arts aspects over immortals, magic, demons, Gods, etcs. And Majesty's First Love doesnt count because it is set on modern times and it involves aliens, it is more like a fantasy romance.

Sadly this year there haven't been too many xianxias. Top of my head only Destiny of White Snake and Beauties in the Closet, which felt a bit more like a palace drama. I don't know about Martial Universe or Legend of the Fire God since they haven't aired yet. Martial Universe looks like it will heavily focus on martial arts but not sure. For me, some dramas can have some fantasy elements without really being xianxias. Just like some dramas have wuxia elements but you don't really consider them a wuxia per se, e.g. Princess Agents.

I see our perception on what’s wuxia is quite different. I don’t count those wuxia when the fighting is mostly CGI, one swipe and colour CGI make it feel powerful is just pure fantasy for me lol. Like that of Nicky wu’s series! Those are heavily fantasy rather than wuxia lol. I think Nicky Wu had a series the early part of 2018, no?  Mainly with fresh face, and his drama to me always low quality, in term of everything, I don’t think he’s a good producer like Ruby or FBB.

martial universe I would not count as wuxia lol, more gladiators style fantasy xianxia lol! Where again, magical weapons aid the hero in a gladiators ring? Like if we have magical weapons, it’s not wuxia any more. Wuxia is all about various different martial art kungfu sect fight one another where the kungfu is what put them on top, not a magic weapon or a magic stone/amulet! Nothing magical about the kungfu lol, it’s just whether you are gifted in understanding the book/method to perform it well plus the internal force.

and yes, I agree some drama has fantasy elements or wuxia elements, I would not really class beauty in the closet as xianxia either, it’s more palace intrigue, that’s why I didn’t mention it. Princess agent is again palace intrigue instead of being wuxia.

Legend of the fire god (just recheck - wrong title, it’s the king of blaze, a bit confuse with this one, it seems to have both period setting and modern setting, but unlike his majesty’s first love, which is back and forth to explain the story, this seems to be a prequel and drama?

what do you class those legend of sword series then? Wuxia? Or xianxia? Since they are mostly dealt with magic, demon and evil, and fairy!

It's a shame there are so few xianxias being turned into drama ...
I particularly prefer to see a story about gods and immortals than a Wuxia cliché story about martial arts and sects ...

is the main reason I want to see this drama so much. I fell in love with the xianxia universe in TMOPB, and I hope to enjoy this drama too

Uhm, maybe we are in a different universe, but there are a lot of xianxias drama, more than wuxia. The only wuxia are that of Jin Rong (Louis Cha), however, they are all remake, so they are not new, or that of Gu Long, and again, remake. Whereas all the new stuffs are xianxia. I classed any drama with fantasy elemenents are xianxia (disregard whether it’s based on game or novels).

Alone this year: this drama, his majesty’s first love (Victoria song), the legend of the jade sword (Hawick Lau), legend of Fuyao (colour power stones aka magic), martial universe, legend of the Fire god (I think that with it’s called with some Taiwanese actor Chen something). The only drama that is closest to being a wuxia is the flame’s daughter, however still with one fantasy element being Yinxue’s a snowman and can’t really die (he could but they managed to explain why he didn’t lol).

I didnt even hear of SUyi getting trouble with Sarft?

Its just delayed due to the changes around limiting the drama's thats it?

I only said having trouble to get air date, I didn’t really say they got into troubles with Sarft lol. And the second part is my speculation only :) since I did mention no article really say why Ruyi is having trouble getting air time. If it’s only simply cutting 120ep down to 90, it shouldn’t take that long, right? Obviously cutting 1/4 of a series does pose problem with coherent, but if they really want to push it out fast, I wouldn’t think that need to be delayed over a year.

No. I dont think this is not ripping off Ruyi. Yanxi is based on novel of same name...and i read that there is no plagiarism rumor. On the other hand, instead Ruyi original novel has plagiarism rumor. It was by same author of Zhenhuan...which also has plagiarism issue. People didnt realise it until the dramas become popular. Not sure if Ruyi drama is delayed due to this rumor or not.

      Hide contents

And talking about same storylines, actually some said Yanxi copy recent HK drama Gong Xin Ji 2 "Deep In The Realm Of Conscience"...also same, it is female lead's sister that led to her entering the palace. But here is investigate her death. The HK one is her sister is missing. But think the novel appeared 1st before the HK drama.

Then as more palace dramas appear, u can't avoid the usual plots eg poison pregnant consorts, use dancing, singing to attract the Emperor, consorts having pets etc. As long as fine details, the dialogue, sequence of events aren't the same...can't say who copy who.

About inaccurate potrayal of chars... read that the FuCha empress in Ruyi drama would be potrayed as evil one. The version in Yanxi should be the accurate one according to history books...she is really so gentle and kind.

But in Yanxi...the way Gao Consort is potrayed is exaggerated. She was known in history to like to perform opera...but doesnt necessary mean she would speak like one..haha. And is she so arrogant? No mention in history.

Guess such novels and dramas would take liberties in potraying chars compared to history.

Haha, yup, after a while, the old tricks/plots will just gonna be reused! Yea, I know about the issue of portraying the empress, this is actually the real reason why Ruyi and wins the world are having trouble getting air date, as they tried to create a different personality for a historical figure that is well known for being otherwise. With wins the world, it’s Qin Shi Huang! With Ruyi, though I didn’t have any article saying why, I would not doubt the portrayal of the empress gives them troubles with Sarft! This is also why China is trying to limit these sort of drama, where historical events and figures get twisted to fit a narrative.

As much as the novel for Yanxi might come out first, TVB tends to be very good in their script, as in when it’s creative, it’s creative, they write the plot well, etc. I don’t think I ever watch TVB series and feel like it’s a copy cat of something else :) but then I have stopped watching TVB for a few years now, so maybe I’m out of date :)

  13. What Cedric gave you possibly the most detailed answer you would ever get lol. I said what I said based on this news website I followed. Before Yanxi, all it posted was Fuyao, now, every day all it posted is about Yanxi, Fuyao get an article once every 3 days lol.

It also posted things like douban score, netizens’s most popular comments, pro and con of the latest developments etc.

i didn’t think sweet romance or whatever of Lu Han was that good based on the trailer, plus his acting is so terrible, but hey, whatever float their boats I guess.

thanks Cedric for the additional info on the drama, I just thought Yu Mama is both the director and the script writer again! He seems to have this ego that he couldn’t let other write or direct! No wonder this is actually decent lol! Didn’t know it was based on a book, strangely the website I followed mention nothing of that, it does said that it seems to be ripping off Story of Ruyi though, which is having troubles getting air time. And YU mama’s drama are often so bad, that it can’t be compared to the king of palace drama, legend of zhen huan. Put it in perspective, the last famous, decent palace drama YU mama made was scheme of a beauty!

on another news, it’s said that YU Mama is now hurrying making a drama for the Qin’s dynasty to compete with Fan Bing Bing’s also having trouble to get air time drama lol. And at this rate, he will hit the audiences before hers as well, and get another hit lawl
