Hi Xienrue :)!! Welcome abroad. I'm happy you're here with me to discuss this interesting, yet very sad, and depressing drama with me^^. Yes, ep 9-11 were very sad indeed. CY acted out those sad, depressing emotions so well. He's the main reason I'm watching this^^. He looks younger and thinner here, but I found out he filmed this before L&R. The plot is intriguing so far, and it's a boo that FL will have a son with the current King, ChengRui. I just hope to see how ML ChengXu will take revenge against his so called brothers; and bring justice to his mom. The way she was asked to died was just so heartbreaking, and disturbing. His half-brothers are sore losers of jealousy. Looking forward to their doomsday.
I think the King will died from the synopsis, so maybe there's a slight chance for FL and ML to reconcile their love??? I'm a poop for angst and tragedy, so I hope for justice more than anything.
Hello, too. The acting in those depressing moment is so stellar. So much pain.
How Cheng Xu bring his loser brothers to justice is the main reason I will stay here. Cheng Xu reminded me of LIn Shu in Nirvana in Fire. Perhaps when he was not yet an accomplished marshal under his father. So very much looking forward to power play here. To hell with romance and female lead. The moment she married his brother, their romance is ended in my eyes.
I don't think they will ever get together formally in this life. She will forever be his sister in law. And I hope become an advisor to the young king is not female lead suggestion. Because I will hate her for that. The throne is Cheng Xu's to begin with.
I think the queen (FL sister) in a way know everything?! I am currently so disgusted with her.

IS anyone watching this with me^^? Too depressing, no one wants to?? lol
I am currently watching this, coming from L&R.
I am quite into palace drama and heavy plot. But I suspect I will get pretty annoyed with the female lead later on based on the synopsis. Still staying for the male lead though. Cheng Yi acting is superb so far (episode 9-11 are so heartbreaking).
In this kind of drama, the OTP will never get together in this life. Moreover, the female lead will have a son with the King. Why she doesn't take precaution to prevent getting pregnant is beyond me. This kind of drama always give me a female lead like this. Smart at the beginning, then forced to marry, playing hard to get for a while but finally do the intercourse forced by circumstances, and then after getting pregnant suddenly she becomes cold blooded woman who will do everything for her son. Duh!!
I am so disgusted to the King and his wife (the FL sister). They tried to cover their sins with kindness. The queen hypocritical way to appease Cheng Xu so that he would not come to her husband is so bad. Hope the drama will show how guilt shadowed these pair of husband and wife. But as I see it, the FL sister will alive and well (I can see both of the women sitting together with the young king in the trailer).
SpoilerWell, as far as I know, the male lead will die first in the end? Good. The sooner he dies the better. No more pain, no more caring of his "sister in law" and her son. They are not worth it.
Let's see together when the truth comes out, who will the FL sided with? Her husband or Justice.

Sorry for posting a lot today, but I came across this article and it didn't make me feel too good.
I'm a fan of this show and I have watched til ep 27 but disagree with some of the comments. For those of you who have watched farther, does XJ get overbearingly annoying/frustrating as a character?
https://dramapanda.com/2020/08/love-and-redemption-writer-explains-side-controversy.html
Already read the article and became annoyed. Tired of this paid review and paid rating accusation. This is my first time seeing a particular popular drama is accused like this. However much money out there, they couldn't possibly buy all the people who commented with passion in discussion forum.
Regarding the story:
SpoilerI cannot fault that some people find her annoying at this point of time (until episode 44). She in a way really lets herself be swayed by her father, Hao Chen, Ling Long, and all other people from "good" sects. Of course if we want to think logically from her point of view, her behavior is understandable. But, understand doesn't mean it is easy to be swallowed. People who defend her, claims that Si Feng lied too many times to her. And it is normal for her to trust her family. People who defend Si Feng, expect her to be more trusting on him and grow more backbone to not always agreeing to her family.
I think Si Feng trusts Xuan Ji too much, he is betting everything on her love to him. His principal in love is all in or nothing. Problem is, Xuan Ji is still a naive woman who just get her 6 senses. She is not ready for this kind of love and even not ready to reciprocate in the same manner. So we have this kind of unbalance love for now. The male lead suffers so much while the female lead goes free in a way.
Posters above have explained very nicely about how in 9 lives before this, Xuan Ji was filled with hatred and anger. In a way she was like an angry dog. Uncontrollable and lashed out everywhere. What Si Feng had done to appease her anger was letting her bit into him as much as she wanted. It was the only way. She didn't believe in sincerity so Si Feng died 9 times to show his sincerity. How do you show sincerity? By showing your willingness to sacrifice and suffer. So I feel the drama showing lots of male lead suffering is justified. Now in the 10th life, Xuan Ji anger finally gone. Now she learns to love. Right now, she starts tilting the love balance but not yet done; Si Feng side still hold more weight. I hope in the end of the drama, after her character development completed, finally their love will be balanced between the two of them.
People who overly criticize the script right now perhaps just not patient enough.

The battle in eps 44 is so cool... it seems when SF played as Moshaxing, his martial art also improved (thankfully )
SpoilerSi Feng has always been powerful. But he played pretend since no one can know he was a demon. I am happy that now he can show his true power; showing to those arrogant sect masters that they could hurt him only because he allowed them.

i marathon till the latest episode!!!! lol.. i love ep 24 where XJ stands for SF and even reveal her true power infront of everyone... that HC never thought XJ power is sooo powerful...
I like the way SF teach XJ on how to love only one person.. and should not hug other ppl except him.. hahahahha.. so cute <3
the finally know how to jealous when the fox appeared infront SF.. XJ is soo cute too..
Xuan Ji character development throughout the story is very interesting to watch. At first, I think she latched herself to Si Feng because he was one of the people that accepted her and didn't bully her. But later on she was unconsciously attracted to him. If not, I don't think she would be that hard working in making Si Feng forgive her after 4 years separation. She didn't know the name of the feeling she had. She only knew she wanted to be close to him and for him to care for her.
The drama has very good pace in my opinion. It doesn't feel draggy until now.

Yes, me too. So happy that 3 episodes come out instead of only 2 tonight.
SpoilerI think the star of tonight episodes is Si Feng father. Just love seeing him acting like protective father to his son. I hope I can understand better the conversation between him and Xuan Ji father (it was so funny that they were fighting in front of their children). I hope he can have a better ending in the drama than in the novel. It was so heartbreaking .....
Hao Chen just plainly annoying. He just got worse from one episode to the next. Xuan Ji father and the whole lot from Shaoyang showed to be spineless. Just a bunch of cowards that afraid to stand out.
So far the drama did a good job in adapting the novel. I even say that I prefer the drama since the characterization is stronger in the drama.
The new MV deals mainly with Si Feng and his father. Very much love it. This father son interaction was rather lacking in the novel.

Me too. I think the drama did justice to the story and the characters than the novel itself.
Ashes of love too. Jinmin acts so childish after all the pain she suffered while Jinmi in the drama so mature.....
Yes, the drama gives a meatier character background to the male lead. It makes the love story more powerful. Ths is one drama that I am happy to be deviate from the original source.
Talking about Ashes of Love, my opinion until today is the actress should have showed a more devastated state of emotion after Xu Feng died and she realized her love. Actually, this is a common problem in chinese drama world. I often watch dramas where the female lead just failed in emoting a crushed and devastated feeling. Instead I got a smiling face (without even a hint of sadness in her eyes), a flat face, a cold face, etc. Nothing hinting that the character feels crushed inside.
I truly hope that the female lead in Love and Redemption will deliver.

I have been waiting for this drama since last year. So very happy that it finally aired albeit with lots of pending ever since early 2020.
The trailer was very interesting and I was immediately hooked. Then I hunted the novel as preparation.
SpoilerHonestly, when I finished the novel, my verdict was the story was not really my taste. The female lead personality is good (believe me I hate lots of female lead characters) but the love story itself lack something. I felt that the author had very good ingredient in her hands but somehow she failed to make it something excellent.
10 lives is an intriguing background. But, the male lead seems to have nothing to do with that. Since the beginning, the novel has teased the reader about the female lead background as God of War. Even with lovers curse and demon identity, the male lead pale in comparison with the female lead. I got the feel that Si Feng just part of Xuan Ji journey, he was not integral in it. Then, nearly in the end, we were told that Si Feng was a minor God in his past life. But it didn't add to the story. Whether he was a God before or not, did not matter in the big picture or their love story.
Therefore, I am happy that the drama seems to deviate a little from the novel. From what I can infer from trailers, the drama put more weight on the male lead background thus elevate this character importance in the female lead journey.
So far I love this drama. The pace is good, the leads chemistry is also good. Perhaps this will be the first drama in this year that I finish without skipping to the end. Other dramas I have watched either has annoying female lead (damsel in distress or holier than thou attitude) or boring story.
It is quite refreshing to see the male lead is the one that becomes damsel in distress for once .

Ooo, this drama finally is released???
I have been waiting forever for this. In preparation for the drama, I read the novel. Actually, I hope that they would deviate slightly from the novel since in my opinion the novel is too simple regarding the male lead background and their fated love line.

First time I see the news that the novel would get live drama adaption, I have reservation about it and low expectation. I was fresh from two drama adaptation that quite butchered the original: The Legend (for its awful ending) and Fight Break Sphere (I can no longer recognize this drama as an adaptation). Plus, I see that we would have idol casted as two main lead (I was thinking that Wang Yi Bo was too young for this role), so acting wise I was afraid of what I would see. Moreover, I have seen drama adapted from BL novel that show two awkward actors on screen (painful for my eyes).
Watching first 2 episodes, I was pleasantly surprised. The acting is good enough (even though there are rooms for improvement) and there was undeniable chemistry there. And that chemistry was enough to carry the show.
Honestly, I think the drama would make Wei Wu Xian and Lan Wang Ji go separate ways in the end (if they go together like in the novel, it would be too ..... ).

Hai @xienrue i'm from Indonesia, i check about indosub yilong's drama, there i just find prodigal border town and any other just with engsub...so hard to find indosub
Hi! Please check on "dramamu". I found all three dramas there. Actually it is easier to find chinese drama with indo sub than with eng sub these days, especially for those unpopular drama (drama without idol). I am very surprised at this. A couple of dramas like Xuan Yuan Sword - Han Cloud and The Legend of Jade Sword, I cannot find those in eng sub at all. But then suddenly I found those in indo sub ....
@node Woah! You are NodeZero from YT? I am a fan of your videos .

@katthy Hahahahahaha! Of course I know you are from Italy. I just want to let those who come from Indonesia know that they can enjoy those three dramas in our language (luckily) so that they don' t need to be frustrated with the lack of eng sub. Sorry, seems my wording was indeed rather ambiguous regarding whom I subjected my sentences for
I feel pretty bad for you since I know that it will be very hard for European countries to have chinese dramas subbed to their language (or not?). I can understand your frustration perfectly since I often got frustrated searching for sub for my favorite Chinese drama and found nothing. Those indo subs actually come as surprise for me since I never realize that my country is that into Chinese drama (turn out I am out of date with my country preference). As far as I know, country that has abundant of subs for Chinese dramas is Vietnam. Chinese dramas are always have problem in subbing unlike Korean dramas. I think the language is more difficult to translate?! Not to mention the monstrous number of episodes. Anyway, ever since ZYL rise to popularity, I always wish that somebody will take the project of subbing old dramas of ZYL to english, the good ones especially that showcased his acting skill.

@katthy Unfortunately for us, it is very hard to find old dramas of Zhu Yi Long in eng sub. I am pretty lucky because my country people seem to be more and more interested in chinese dramas these days, so there are quite a number of dramas that do not have eng sub, get translated to my language. Sadly, my luck stop at Love for Three Lifetimes. So for you that come from Indonesia, be happy that you can enjoy Border Town Prodigal, As Flower Fade and Fly Across the Sky, and Royal Sister Return fully subbed in Indonesian language.
I really hope that someone will continue the subbing for Border Town Prodigal. Even though this is not a good drama in term of storyline, this drama in my opinion really highlighted ZYL acting skill. My life is never the same after watching this drama. ZYL was re-defined what was called tragic character here. His inner pain, sadness and depression really wrenched my heart. Even when he smiled, you could still feel his inner pain. It was so perfect that it changed my way to evaluate an actor/actress in acting sad scene. I have read the novel too, and I say ZYL captured Fu Hong Xue nuances in the novel perfectly. This drama is the very culprit that made me unable to fully enjoy Ashes of Love. Therefore I wish that all ZYL fans can watch this drama. It is a great experience that can make you admire him even more.
Xin Xiao Shi Yi Lang ..... ZYL was the only one that made me grit my teeth and continued on watching until the end. I hated the story, and the female lead frustrated me to no end.

@BreezeC What is this mv compilation of ZYL characters death that you are talking?
I am planning to watch Love for Three Lifetimes, but sadly I cannot find sub. ..... Therefore I am on my way to try watching The Legend of Miyue. Do you have other recommendation?
By the way regarding The Lost Tomb, since there is a "reboot" tagging in the title, are we sure that the adaption ZYL acts on is not the first arc? Because I have tried watching Tomb Raider movie and The Lost Tomb season 1. Sadly, I don't like the Wu Xie character there. Too naive for my taste, thus I hope that ZYL will play a matured Wu Xie instead.

Welcome to @softzyl and @minshinlover!!! Hope you enjoy your stay in this thread
@katthy As Flower Fade and Fly Across the Sky is one of ZYL drama that end in happy ending with him getting the girl. After watching the painful and depressing thing that was Border Town Prodigal, As Flower Fade was like oasis at that point of time. I really like his character there. I hope you have fun watching.
@siobhanne If you didn't ask, I would never realized that there is almost no chinese drama that I know that has good antagonist. Good antagonist here means a character that you can sympathize and even root for. Chinese drama has tendency to glorify the protagonist while neglecting the antagonist. This is not only happen in drama, but in novel too. Well, one drama that perhaps has acceptable antagonist is Ashes of Love. Run Yu character there sure has justified reason why he acts like he does (even though it is still wrong thing to do). But, his character still cannot make me root for him, unfortunately (I know lots of people there will think otherwise though). It is Korean Dramas where I find has good antagonist whom can make me root for them more than the protagonist. There are 2 of them that I can remember for now: Mishil and Bidam from Queen Seon Duk, Gwi from Scholar who Walks the Night. Especially Mishil character; I think she is more qualified to become the Female King than the main character.

@BreezeC Hi!
Well, Bi Jun mother was more or less has it coming when she just insulted Lian Cheng Bi and his father. I understood that it was her maternal thing speaking but she must also understand her daughter was at fault.
Based on my experience reading Border Town Prodigal and its sequel novels, I can see that the writing style of Gu Long is not my cup of tea at all. If ZYL was not in Xin Xiao Shi Yi Lang, I would never watch this drama. Border Town Prodigal was more bearable since the drama change things a bit with making Fu Hong Xue main focus instead of Ye Kai. I should commend ZYL here for his acting. Lian Cheng Bi is a pitiful character, just as Fu Hong Xue (even though Fu Hong Xue is bordering tragic .....) but the nuances that I got from those two characters were different. They are both sad characters, but I think ZYL was able to level their sad intensity differently.
Yes, I am agree with you that based on ZYL personality that we have seen up to now, he will have no qualm to take on antagonist role as long as it can provide challenge to him. It is often that antagonist role and anti-hero are more complex than the protagonist one. I hope with his increasing popularity, more Production house and Director will recognize his talent and give him a complex role.

Hi, it has been long since I last posted here. Thank you for all the information and ZYL picture that all of you share here. They are really a treat to my eyes. I am happy hearing that our existence here is known by ZYL fans in China. In a way I feel like big family reunion . I don't mind if my posts is quoted since this is a public forum.
Regarding the bad things happen with shampoo commercial, I try to look at it in a positive light. In a way, this just show that Zhu Yi Long has become very popular that attack on him (and perhaps to his fans too) has started. We as his fans need to show that we are a mature and logical people. This kind of attack in my opinion will just get more severe the more popular he is (and he will get more popular). Just take pride that he is that good that make those people think he is worth the effort to be attacked. I just hope his agency is able to protect his safety and interest. I also believe his fans and those who have worked with him know him enough to not fall easily to this bad rumor.
Now let talk about happy things. I have recently finished watching Xin Xiao Shi Yi Lang ....with effort. The story left me with bad taste. ZYL character there Lian Cheng Bi is a poor guy who could not let go of a woman. Even though it show his loyalty, the woman just doesn't deserve him. His turn to bad side can work with more elaboration but well the drama just spend so much time in the romance of the main couple, thus the development of the antagonist is kind of neglected. One thing that I want to mention here is that ZYL looks much cooler when he becomes demon-like in the end. I literally just "wow" seeing him in that persona. I guess almost of us also agree that his Ye Zun in Guardian also looks cooler than Shen Wei. Therefore .....I kind of wish he will someday take an antagonist role that will make him the villain from the beginning . Not a secondary main lead turn to antagonist like Lian Cheng Bi or final antagonist like Ye Zun, but a real antagonist that is head to head with the protagonist from the beginning. Perhaps choosing a complex villain character?
I am trying to watch Love of three lifetime, but sadly cannot find eng sub

@katthy Hi, welcome! I am curious, are you new to chinese drama?
About Letting You Float Like a Dream, I only have watched a couple of episodes. I know it is a rather simple romance story and I a more or less agree with AvenueX assessment. However, like I have been said in my previous post here, Guardian (especially Zhu Yi Long acting and also his acting in other dramas) messed up my standard for good acting. I am literally in withdrawal from an acting that can make me "feel". So I am planning to make Letting You Float as my drug to cure me. By all of your comments about Zhu Yi Long acting in there, this drama should be a perfect drug for me. Perhaps just fast forwarding to the scene Zhu Yi Long in it.

Have not watched today episodes, but based on the spoiler all of you posted here, I think I will not like it very much. Might as well postponed the watching and wait for the sub. In the mean time, I will continue my watching from beginning with sub (I am at episode 17).
While the drama has lots of fault, I need to give my praise to the war scene. That is a very gorgeous cinematography and CGI. Not to mention that I finally can see Xu Feng in "God of War" persona. When I watched that scene, I thought why they couldn't give us something like this from the beginning?
The change of Jin Mi and Xu Feng reconciliation timing is also good, even though I still felt that it is far too simple and too easy. I like the conversation flow in the novel better, because in that I feel Xu Feng finally get his time to "finish" his temper tantrum (a very justified temper tantrum in my opinion). But since the drama change gives them more time to be lovey dovey, fine, I will swallow my frustration.
I also like the addition of how Run Yu and Xu Feng brotherly relationship is more or less mended. This is consistent with how the brothers relationship depicted in the early episode. Perhaps from all the addition that the drama did, this is the one that I like the most. Run Yu gets his punishment (loneliness is pretty harsh punishment that cannot be compared with physical punishment) but in the end he should finally realize that he has done his brother a very terrible thing. And he was never alone or lacks of love from the beginning. Xu Feng was always there beside him despite his mother displeasure. It was Run Yu himself that chose to not see that and let himself be consumed by hate. He might not regret killing the Heavenly Empress and taking the throne but he surely regret that in doing that he literally (however indirectly) killed his own brother.
By the way, am I the only one who is annoyed because Xu Feng let go of his demon throne? I like him as Demon Lord and in the novel, he stays as one. In a way, it showcases Jin Mi love when she let go of everything and choose to stay with him in the Demon realm. It is like "home is where you are" kind of thing .....

@BreezeC I know, right? Border Town Prodigal is not even that good of Production, but the Fu Hong Xue character just so devastatingly sad. I read the novel, too and I am happy the depressed mood in the novel is translated into the drama perfectly. He doesn't even need to talk or crying or something, and I already pity him very much.
I am done watching Border Town Prodigal, As Flowers Fade and Fly to the Sky, and in the middle of Xin Xiao Shi Yi Lang. The last one, I am struggled to finish it. I hate the female character. Dunno why, I get the feel that drama these days (not just Chinese) seems to give lots of pass to a character that makes lots of trouble/mess just because that character is the female lead .....
Three Lifetime seems to be a painful drama, too. But I think I will take the risk, hahahahaha. After that, perhaps I will try with Tomb Rider to prepare me watching Zhu Yi Long interpretation of Wu Xie. Do you have recommendation which adaption that I should watch first?

Drama this year quite messes up my standard in grading a drama or an acting. Early this year, I got NiF 2 which messed me big time in aspect of story telling and ancient ethic. Then I got Guardian which messed me big time in how 2 male actors acted in bromance bordering BL. After Guardian, I follow Zhu Yi Long, watching his Border Town Prodigal. That drama has rather bad story telling, but what amazed me is Zhu Yi Long's Fu Hong Xue. It is the first time I can feel a character depression nature for the entire drama. Just looking at him, I already felt sad. Before, I usually only felt characters melancholic mood on and off even though the story should demand they stay in that mood for a certain duration.
After watching Guardian, seeing what it could be between 2 male actors acting "bromance", SCI feels flat to me. And now it lessen my enjoyment watching Ashes of Love ...... Sigh ......
After this, I am planning to watch Three Lifetime. Would that drama brings more "trouble" to me??

Although one think that I really like a lot in the drama is the leads voice acting. It's rare to come across a non-dubbed period drama and I really appreciate it in here. This! And the script! They should not make Jin Mi doing side quest in redemption arc. And I dislike how she is still infatuated with talking about Sui He when she should be feeling horrified that she had wrongly killed Xu Feng. It makes it look that she gets her priority wrong ....

Regarding the live concert, I honestly have not watched that. But from the clips I have seen and people comment here and there, both Cheng Yi and Yuan Bing Yuan actually ignoring each other. In a way, this was an agreement beforehand. So no disrespecting happened here. If you want to place the blame, then blame the crazy fans that forced them to act like this in public. I honestly think it is unfair that Cheng Yi is the only one get the heat from all of this. Just because Yuan Bing Yuang is a woman thus perhaps looks more pitiful, the man is no less of victim than her in this situation. Moreover, I believe this all just a farce, public showing. They should be okay in reality.
I heard that this distance was ordered from their company. Anyway, it is illogical to even think that Cheng Yi let popularity goes into his head and acted like that out of arrogant. No one that stupid to act like Cheng Yi did if there was no certain order from the higher up. Especially when his career was in rising state. And his behavior was too much different from his usual behavior in BTS or in his previous interview this years. If you are truly his fans then perhaps you should be more concerned whether he was really okay deep inside. Yes, he might be overdid the "distance act" a bit. But I think this mainly cause by his unfamiliarity on how to deal with the media and crazy fans.
Their fans were fighting online before this. And, as I see it, this stage purpose was to dispel the illusion of CP fans. The CP fans of L&R has started to ship them in real life and with Cheng Yi other drama ongoing, this fans attitude was not favorable. Fans needs to understand that the character and the actor are two different identity. Who to say that these fans not already bullying the lead actress from The Promise of Chang An.
At this current situation, we better stay put and let those fan war in China died down instead of starting another war.
