I haven’t completed watching this drama yet because I’m waiting for eng subs. However, I am in tune with all of the spoilers haha! All I can say is…Wow. Despite some gaps, overall, this drama has been breathtaking. The storyline and characters are beautiful in a very ugly way that a lot of viewers are not familiar with/used to, and I think that is phenomenal. Most importantly, I honestly think this storyline and the leads are what kept pulling the viewers to continue investing their time in this drama. Because at least for me, I never really cared that much about the political parts of the story. I was solely invested in the leads and I was curious to see how the storyline would unfold regardless of knowing how tragic it was going to end. I also think this ugliness is reflective of reality; the reality of what happens in life. Humans don’t possess the ability to be flawless and life isn’t always a box that is nicely wrapped up.
On the other hand, while watching the spoilers, I was also wondered why XF decided to say what she said to LCY/XW as her last words: “In the end, the fox was unable to wait for the girl.” I have a thought about this, but I wanted to share my interpretation of the ost song “Little Fox” first. I found parts of the song with eng subs from viki’s translation in one of the drama’s teasers.

It’s waiting for the shepherd girl to come back
The fox represents LCY/XW while the shepherd girl represents XF. I wasn’t sure if foxes attack sheep, and so I looked it up. Not too surprising, it turned out that foxes do attack sheep. The main duty of a shepherd is to protect the sheep from predators. With all of that in mind, I interpreted the sheep as XF’s clan/people/family/friends, all of which she deeply loves and wanted to protect throughout the whole story. However, LCY/XW who is the fox, ends up attacking her sheep which signifies the destruction of XF’s clan/people/family/friends, and ultimately, herself.
The lyrics also had “moon” within it, which is super interesting to me, especially when I think about LCY/XW. Similar to what @bluesunny3 noted previously, I also see LCY/XW as one person; he has two parts within him the coexist to make who he is as a character. The moon is a part of the night time and yet sometimes show up during sunset. When it appears during the night time, I think about coldness and darkness, all of which represents LCY/XW’s revenge, obsession, and greed. On the other hand, the moon that appears during sunset represents warmth and light, which could also represent LCY/XW’s love and protection for XF. Thus I see LCY/XW as the same person who has two sides to himself…just like how the moon could coexist during the sunset and night time, living in the same sky.
Aside from moon, the song also mentions how the fox is sitting by the sand dunes and waiting for the shepherd girl. I wanted to also gain a better understanding of sand dunes, and so I looked it up: “Dunes form where the beach is wide enough to allow for the accumulation of wind-blown sand, and where prevailing onshore winds tend to blow sand inland.” I think Xiao Feng’s name means small wind and or breeze, all of which is also very symbolic to the lyrics, “A fox is sitting on top of the sand dune, sitting on top of the sand dune, looking at the moon, but actually, it’s not watching the moon, it’s waiting for the shepherd girl to come back.” LCY/XW is the fox who has done wrong to the shepherd and is now waiting for the shepherd to come back…it’s waiting by the sand dune which is created by the wind, and that wind could be seen as XF.
Lastly, I think the ost song “Little Fox” is sung in LCY/XW’s perspective. Perhaps XF’s last words for LCY/XW is from her view point in the “Little Fox” song. Her last words to LCY/XW is, “In the end, the fox was unable to wait for the girl.” To me, I think she felt like her existence wasn’t needed/isn’t worthy anymore since she, the shepherd girl, doesn’t have a reason to live anymore…no matter how much she may be intrigued by and or love the fox, her sheep has been devoured by the fox. LCY/XW killed XF’s love, hope, and happiness. Since the fox was unable to wait for the girl (the fox was sly and didn’t wait for the girl to protect her sheep), he will be punished by never being able to unite with her. He will only be able to continue waiting and hoping that he will one day reunite with her. And so… “A fox sitting on top of the sand dune. Sitting on top of the sand dune, looking at the moon. But actually, it’s not watching the moon. It’s waiting for the shepherd girl to come back.”
Wow, loved your interpretation of the song. It’s so sad in so many levels.
Now, this drama is over so what do we watch now? Lol

I thought I was the only one who noticed his hands bez I was saying to myself dang his hands are nicer than mine. Lol
At first look he may not be as handsome as other male actors but how he protrayed his character was really good which is why u find him amazing. He also did really well as YH in the Legend of the condor hero drama with his excellent acting which I noticed him there as well.
I have seen really handsome actors that can’t pull off some scenes that CXX can with emotion just with his eyes or smile. I think he will have great potential in this industry.
Again, such pretty hands.

Also, I have to to agree with everyone if they just gave us a little more of cute scenes of the main couple then I would feel more satisfied with the ending. I feeling like the romance was on a shallow level when they were at the palace and don’t feel too sad abt XF death as much. It’s not the actors fault but the editing department.
But, all in all they did really well bez they had great chemistry and great acting. Just would like to had more time with the main leads. I will start looking out for CXX dramas now on. Haha

So, just to confirm in eps 47. LCY did sleep with XF, correct?
Bez I know they cut part of this scene bez in the trailer we see he throws her on the bed. In eps 47, he wakes up next to her like he did the deed with her.
Its so sad that he doesn’t know he is GXW.
They r destine to meet and fall in love but not meant for each other. Boo

I heard that same story but you can expect them to remember their origins if it’s true. Also, Japan is well established by the time Tang Dynasty is around so I think maybe they were influenced and verse reversal as well. But, I can still be wrong but FL clothing is so much better than the queen. The queen makeup is so scary. Lol
i keep looking at her eyebrows to make sure if she really shaved them. Hahaha

During that period they were very progress in their clothing and makeup. Show lots of cleveage and makeup were very different. If you google Tang Dynasty clothing and makeup then you will get your answer. Also, remember during that era Japanese was largely influenced by China.
I hope I answered or at least clarified some of questions for you. :-)

No, he will not treat her well bez the higher the status it’s more dangerous. He treats XF bad so people can’t use her against him and she won’t get hurt from them as well. Remember what the original crown prince said to LCY. People who protected u at first is also the people will/can harm you later. That’s why he is doing that so the target won’t be on her but on SeSe.

Someone here mentioned just heard the Director has apparently confirmed that they are working on an alternative ending so that both the book martyrs and love fools can get what they want. Don’t quote me on it but I’ve seen several posts now and it has apparently been commissioned by Youku (probably because they realised how successful the drama is).
Copied from someone posting.Also, I heard the same thing but I think they will show both ending to satisfy book fan and others. Let you choose which ending for yourself. Alternative ending maybe be an extra episode. Haha...

I have to agree the author did make this story so much more tragic. One wonder this book was ranked one of the saddest in China. Also, the author is famous for making her male leads suffer with sad endings. Lol. Not funny at all.

Monk basely told her to let go of the past and present relationships with him. She reply I am a man how could I have any relationship with him. So funny...lol
Also, the monk said to CY don’t force/push to have this relationship because we all know he eventually will fight for her love. Again so tragic, met to fall in love but can’t be together.

Well in the novel in the very end she jumped off a cliff to die and he wanted to go after her but his soldiers were holding him back that’s why.
But, I do agree he was a jerk in the novel but the drama as of the first 8 eps they made his character seem better. You can see why he did it for revenge for his brother death and he thought those people were cruel to the Han people. Just my thought. Lol

Yes, his performance was good bez he was the only one got recognized for his good performance. Also, I thought he was able to bring the complexity of the character. I just watched eps 7 and u can tell how guilty he feels toward XF. I thought how cute and innocent it’s start but I keep telling myself to prepare. But, they r so cute together.

I actually love this drama. I think we all been waiting for this drama way too long. So, I am so glad it’s out but I am sad they release everything so I don’t know will this drama get a ranking drop. It’s really good and Li Qin did a wonderful job showing pain and crying her eyes out. I am a Darren Wang fan now.
