  1. I picked this up because - how long has it been since Uhm Jung Hwa was in a drama, gosh I’m old — had pretty low expectations, then couldn’t stop watching for six hours straight! This show is great! So well done and without your usual big name actors too. Great pacing, excellent cast, hilarious dialogue, but also done with emotional sensitivity.

I can’t believe I got hooked on another currently airing drama, it’s not good for my heart!

And it's not her place to tell chi yeol which academy to join, just because they are dating doesn't mean she has the right to interfere in private matters and on top of all she is advocating for a vile group of women, I liked chi yeol's personal reason respecting the director and all, also what did this weird statement from ms.know it all even mean, 'if you will join other places you will be uncomfortable even if they pay more'???? Like how do you know it will be uncomfortable, have you ever worked as a tutor? She sounded so manipulative. This is called taking advantage of your influence on someone. I would rather chi yeol spend his life with mr ji than low iq ahjumma. Even loved it when ji said those harsh things to her at bowling club.

Ok this is really interesting, as a translation nerd. I was so puzzled by what you said I went back to watch this part again, because it sounded like we had watched two different versions of the show and... the English subtitles make Haeng Seon's response sound much more direct and assertive than she really is in Korean.  Haeng Seon's entire response is basically reflecting on what Chihyeol-ssam has said, Korean is full of qualifiers that express the speaker's uncertainty like "it sounds like", "it seems like", "I guess you mean that", but I guess the subtitler thought that would make the translation clunky and dropped all these qualifiers.

So, Haeng Seon didn't say "So it's decided then", she is saying "it sounds like you've decided", she didn't say "if you will join other places you will be uncomfortable", but "it seems like even if they pay you more and you move you're still going to feel unsettled." She isn't telling him what to think, she's listening and saying "this is what it sounds like you're saying, am I correct?"

In he latest ep, the manager seems to be capable of hurting someone, and is jealous of anyone whom CY is close to especially romantically. Someone from the past seems to have recognized Ji as his schoolmate/classmate and even called him a friend but Manager Ji denied it. He is also capable of hurting someone or even getting them killed when he suddenly and intentionally made the boat  he was steering lurch to the side while HS was standing at the bow of the boat and she could have fallen to the sea. He was going to throw HS under the boat? Sometimes the obvious is a good place to hide.

Oh man this last episode. Haha. Yah, it's clearly Manger Ji now. But I guess the Korean bloggers were right about one thing, that the motivation really isn't clear...and I don't accept the trauma / psychopath explanation lol they better come up with a better one.

Anyway this isn't a realist show if you want realism go watch My Mister (which I loved). It's a light-hearted romantic comedy that succeeds if it makes you suspend your disbelief and it has, for me. I was doubling over laughing in the scene where Haeng Seon gets interrogated in Episode 11 by her crew - and absolutely loved Hae Yi's declaration that if Haeng Seon and Chihyeol-ssam get married she's going to declare independence lol lol

And my goddess Jeon Do Yeon, in the bedroom scene in Episode 12 OMG she so does not look her age. I want to look like her when I'm fifty!! (Also apparently the crew and cast party last weekend was a celebration for her 50th birthday)

  3. The new stills! Oh my heart!!!!

I've been following a number of Korean bloggers and Youtubers (one of them who has been spot on in her predictions every episode), and they all say to expect lots of cuteness as Chihyeol-ssam pouts about being deceived--but this was something else altogether, the compassion, empathy, and love that he expresses in this hug. My heart cannot take this!!

There were also some doubts expressed about whether the tension might fade now that the anticipation part of the romance is over (oh I can watch this couple going to the market every day for six episodes lol), but I have a fair amount of confidence in this writer - I still remember watching Weightlifter Fairy Kim Bong Joo, it was such an expected surprise for me, I went in with no expectations and ended up loving the show, it went from strength to strength each episode. I have faith!! And I want to watch them going to the market every morning - look at the sheer happiness on Chihyeol-ssam's face!

A lot of the Korean Youtubers have been speculating about the thriller part of the show, i.e. the who and why behind the killings. Hee Jae (Sung Jae's brother) is obviously not the killer now, but a traumatised eyewitness - and it's likely that what he saw triggered his memories of Su Hyeon (maybe his ex classmate?). Some of the bloggers suggested Hee Jae and Ji Dong Hui (Chihyeol-ssam's assistant) probably know each other, through Su Hyeon, and Manager Ji actually changed his last name and is Su Hyeon's younger brother. But as much as Manager Ji adores Chihyeol-ssam and wants to protect him...going to the step of killing all these people...requires a lot more motivation?? Please don't just make him a psychopath...

  4. I'm still recovering from episode 10, but what really gets me is Nam Hae I's story. The world (and Korea especially) isn't kind to orphans and abandoned children, and thinking about how much Haeng Soon was wiling to sacrifice to protect Hae I from that cruelty :bawling: and then Hae I having stomached all that, coming up with the courage that she no longer needed her aunt to make that sacrifice for her...

Gosh, I haven't been this moved by a show since My Mister in 2018, and that was a completely different type of drama.

In other news, the show hit a record high 15.9% viewership rating!! It's the hottest weekend show right now.

And it looks like the cast and crew had a viewing party last night. Jung Kyung Ho also posted this lovely photo

Why are most of the women in this show steeped in such internalized misogyny?

While there is some exaggeration, I can assure you that the competition for higher education in many Asian cities is completely ridiculous and the level of misogyny entirely within the realm of what I have seen in Korea.

And actually now I remember that it was Ki Hoon who first mentioned that. In an earlier episode as he was running toward Yu Ra's apartment, his voiceover said, "Run to her if you miss her!" For KH and YR they ran to each other when they missed each other (spoken out loud), and I think it's pretty obvious from the times DH runs after JA that he mirrors this and is missing JA.

JA running to DH is a bit more complex. When she runs toward him as he's lying on the train tracks and when he's standing on the Han River bridge, it seems her worry over him compels her to run to him. It doesn't seem so much that she's missing him, more that she's watching over him and trying to make sure he doesn't commit suicide. Then we have the time she hears herself being called pretty and she runs to him at the restobar. I can't remember if there are any other scenes of her running toward him after that. (After that, I only remember her running away from DH.)

Oh, nice insight. There are quite a few honest conversations that take place between them at night, for sure.

The way you put this really reminds me of Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. The following is not exactly what you were trying to say, but I'll take any excuse to talk about Pride and Prejudice, so thank you in advance for reading this.

Some thoughts off the top of the head: Mr Darcy couldn't entertain thoughts of a connection with Elizabeth because of her circumstances and family (his traditional bent coming through) but he was drawn to her values, her kindness, and her willingness to challenge him as an equal.

For Dong Hoon, because of his marital situation and JA's vulnerability, he rightfully couldn't allow himself to entertain any thoughts of a romantic connection with JA. But he was definitely drawn to her honesty, her kindness and her care for her family.

In the end, once JA returned from Busan as an independent woman, if Dong Hoon were single again their values could be pretty compatible moving forward.

(And to keep going with some of the P & P and MM parallels, Elizabeth was completely prejudiced against Darcy at first, but by the end she realized what a good man he was, especially in his love toward his sister and his care for his household servants. Ji An was also prejudiced against Dong Hoon in the beginning but she started to realized his mettle and goodness by episode 4.)

By the way @S F I tried to look for the calendar on the wall at the restobar in episode 16 and I couldn't see it anywhere. Can you give us a hint as to where it is? You mentioned it said the number 12?

Also @S F once you reach something like 22 posts we'll be able to "Like" them. B)

After going through so many of your posts here and after reading your excellent Contact, I'm so glad you came by! Yep, the thread is still going ....some of us watched MM in recent years/ months and have been captivated with it ever since. Nothing compares to MM.  What kdrama did you decide to watch as your first since 2018 @justamom?

I'm crushing over Jung Kyung Ho and Jeon Do Yeon in Crash Course in Romance! It's nothing like My Mister, it's very silly and predictable but somehow leaves my heart feeling warm and fuzzy after each episode. It's a really, really well done romantic comedy and I think after the pandemic years we all need something fun and light hearted.

  7. Ahhhh! Ahhhhhh! I must have watched the last ten minutes of the show twenty times! The way my heart fluttered! I love this show, it's so silly, fun and light-hearted and the plot is too predictable at times but the chemistry between Jeon Do Yeon and Jung Kyung Ho just carries the day. I've had a thing for Jung Kyung Ho since Endless Heart (omg, was that almost 10 years ago? he was the second lead then and his charisma just made me swoon). And I will watch Jeon Do Yeon in anything.

I've been watching the Korean reviews (just can't get enough of it) and given how fast this show moves am pretty sure episode 9 will feature:

    - the All Care mom's can't get Choi Chihyeol legally, so they try to take Nam Haeng Seon down for having an extra marital affair ("Ilta Scandal"

    - Hae Yi's classmate makes fun of her at school and her two bodyguards (lol) protect her :hooray:

    - Samcheon somehow falls sick and has to be hospitalised. Disregarding the rumours, Choi Chihyeol rushes to the hospital (I think either Hye Jung or Hae-Yi have told him by this point that Nam Haeng Seon is single) to her side. They end up having a romantic moment by the river

    Questions I have!!

    - I think a lot in the back story hasn't been revealed. I don't buy that Manager Ji is the culprit, though he's probably linked to Choi's past is some way

    - I don't get how the girl's suicide from his past is linked to the present

     - I think Nam Haeng Seon's sister / Hae Yi's parents will reappear at some point. Her father is probably someone prominent (maybe even one of her classmates??)

    - I think Hui Jae is protecting Choi Chihyeol (maybe because he knew the girl who committed suicide?)

    @africandramalover heelllloooo! it's been a while!!

  8. Hello —

pandemic, life, no other drama will ever be as good as My Mister anyway so why bother, and then I randomly started watching another drama, began chasing a K drama for the first time since 2018, decided to pop by Soompi and…

…OMG you guys are still here!!!!! :omg:

@sadiesmithhello!! Your devotion to LSK is simply incomparable lolll

(in other updates I watched Broker and oh my if that’s isn’t Lee Ji An…)

  9. Episode 11 was....seriously underwhelming. It’s not even about the lack of a kiss scene or sleeping arrangements. There was ZERO relationship development and the story just went round in circles. But episode 12 was back on track. Sweeeet!  I loved that they brought back the comedy. And the gaming scene was gold, something I think Korean audiences will love and really identify with, especially gaming’s effect on relationships  Redeemed!

Now if I were editor...:D I would have cut out 80% of 11 and gone straight to 12. But then again, maybe all the intense product placements (like @africandramalover said to me, who the heck goes for coffee after reunion of the century?? When she lifted that coffee mug right in front of the camera I groaned really loudly.) were needed to fund those filming trips to Switzerland and Mongolia...

I reckon we won’t have a time jump after all, with four episodes left it’s just enough to tie up the Cho Cheol Gang syndicate and Seri’s family problems. Who knows what the writer has up her sleeves but with S Korea and N Korea possibly opening up individual tourism, that’s my wager for the ending. With Seri owning the Seoul Arts Center. And Ri Jeong Hyuk finding his way back to the piano.

  10. On CLOY's filming delays...

This is just a theory, but any other screenwriting/film studies friends out there? One of the golden rules of screenwriting is to "cut in and cut out", meaning don't waste time telling me how Jeong Hyuk gets from A to B. Every scene has a purpose; just go ahead and tell it straight and cut out once you're done. Park Ji Eun is a master at this, look at how few seconds she spent on Mu Hyeok's funeral. It was powerful, emotive--and less than thirty seconds. The flashbacks are perfect, not draggy and convey the point immediately.

But this also means that each episode has many more scenes. I'd reckon that CLOY has at least 15-20% more scenes than your typical drama. Many of the scenes are short. That's also why the story moves so damned fast. But it also means...the director and production team have a lot more scenes to shoot...

    Anyone else noticed...?

@stroppyse I saw your comments on the conservative backlash and I've been discussing this a lot with my friends in S Korea. My friends in the film/artistic industries roll their eyes and say "normal, what did you expect", my conservative friends say "this show is delusional" and "this is why I never watch local dramas". So, I don't really think this is bridging the huuuuge divide much at all...

Actually if you read the article again what it says is that South Koreans have always seen North Koreans as humans, but it is the rest of the world "more precisely, the US media" which sees N Korea as an international rogue state.

The article is saying it isn't South Korea but us international fans who are getting a whole new perspective on North Korea.

Preview--Omo, the scene with Hyun Bin in a suit was just shot late last week! Cutting it close!

Quick translation of the Seri/JH parts...

Seri: make yourself comfortable, would you like to wash up?

JH: I know how that works...

Seri: Go inside! Take your clothes!

Seri: Someone like RJH who must win all the time is really dangerous.

JH: What is this...this 'face genius'

Seri: Well, it means good looking

Seri: Do you know where is Cho Cheol Kang?

It looks like Jeong Hyuk got his photo taken!

Tbh...the preview tells us...not very much...it does look like it's going to be funny though. Can't wait to watch more of F4 + 1 in Seoul...reminds me of my own surprises adjusting to life in S Korea :D

I just read TVN’s caption on the Youtube video, it says “Ri Jeong Hyeok makes his debut on South Korean social media for his impossibly dashing good looks”?

OMG I can only imagine....this is hilarious

  13. Daebak! The last ten minutes of the show was probably the funniest so far, I just couldn't stop laughing. I am so stoked to watch more of "North Koreans in Seoul" in a lovingly humorous and for once, non-political way. And Kim Soo Hyun's cameo, just fabulous.

Yup, no preview. For all of you who celebrate, go and enjoy Lunar New Year this weekend and forget all about CLOY, just like Seri-tongmu and Ri Jeong Hyuk-daehwi have to try and forget each other  Go and spend time talking to those relatives and family you rarely see, meet up with your old friends, disconnect (from CLOY) and connect with your real life. That, I believe, is the director's Seollal gift to us :tounge_wink:

    Spoiler

Oh, and spoiler update. Apparently Seri and Pyo Chi Su were spotted filming last night eating BBQ...

I wonder if this is a sign of a potential unified Korea ending? Because the condition of having lunch with Choi Ji Woo is after reunification of the Korean peninsula?

If anyone here follows South/North Korean politics you may have heard that Moon Jae In wants to introduce individual tourism to North Korea (but the US is not happy about his idea). So a non-reunification scenario but where people between the two countries can move freely may actually be a reality in our lifetime.

Apparently Pyo Chi Su and Seri have done a lot of filming together in Seoul. Korean fans: “I can’t wait these are going to be the funniest scenes ever”
