This NG is too cute. Expectation: Chansung's deep, dulcet tones. Reality:

Stuff I liked/noticed after watching with subs:

      Hide contents

    - Chansung basically telling Mago I'm not really that good of a person. It's just that I'm in love. Ayiiiieeee  I did like that he was vacillating and he wasn't just blindly and unhesitatingly choosing Man Wol no matter what, and that he wanted to think things through. I think it makes him less of a cinnamon roll, in a good way.

    - I love that even the supernatural can't escape the reality of taxes and the logistics of moving house.

    - The Jang Man Wol x Kim Sun Bi show was funny, even though it was mostly her hur

    - Don't get what the message about the spring spirit was. I thought it was an environmental message until I got to the end of the story. He decided to stop being useful to a rural community so he could be useful to an ultra-rich dude who had his own private spring? W.T.F.

    - Walking in a field in 5-inch stilettos---Man Wol is da real MVP.

I don't get the water spirit story either, in its own right or as part of the larger Man Wol arc.

And another thing is that the killer is very human. He doesn’t seem to be possessed like Yuna. So in the description, it says CS’s friend that was killed. Perhaps this killer is related to the friend who was actually killed? Because Sanchez does look very uncomfortable with this guy’s presence. But this guy looks nothing like a ghost out for revenge.

lol i also just love how CS wouldn’t split up the money so MW goes and ask the president if he has a secret stash anywhere else :joy:

I wonder if CS's friend is amongst the ghosts bellhop already brought to the hotel?  I do not like serial killer's interest in CS.  Freaky.

  3. Just finished watching episode 8 with subs.  Excellent episode!  It's funny because IU plunged out of the starting gate with her acting and charisma from the first episode for me but it's taken me ages to warm up to our main lead but warm up I have.  I like him as much as her now.  He seems older, better looking and more masculine!

     Yeon Woo showed up!

So glad we have a serial killer.  It means the second half will be filled with fewer angst filled misunderstandings and noble idiocy cause they have to catch him.

Every time I see MW stare at CS in his sleep I'm reminded of yet one more moon myth - the moon goddess believes the handsome youth Endymion so beautiful when sleeping she asks Zeus to let him sleep forever so she can stare at him!

If that name Endymion sounds familiar, that was also Tuxedo Mask's name in his prior life in Sailor Moon.  Okay, will stop with the myths but I told you they'd been incorporated everywhere!  It's hard NOT to notice them whether some are obvious or some just guesses.

The guest manager wants to personally see off all the descendants of her husband's relatives who killed her. As for the bartender he actually never got the chance to tell his story. Every time he tried he got interrupted by someone. So the reason behind his stay is still a mystery.

I'm also curious about his story)

Thank you!  I'm curious too now - as if he'll give something away if he tells his story.  Hmmm. Lol.

MW is in a bad mood right now with the hotel move.. accounts that dun tally.. we prolly get thrown out and silent off like the ghost party in the bus :D

could CM have been the rebel leader with his identity concealed as the princess guard?  anyway i’m still trying very hard to turn him back as a good person who din let MW down lol

i only remembered the bartender has been with HDL for 500 years.. he studied and studied and finally returned as the top scholar but on his way back, he just collapsed and died. haha i love how mdm choi always bickered with him.. she can’t stand the way he talks and that he is not trendy (the last scene in search for new plot of land to relocate HDL)

CM might have been good and something like that scenario happened.  And if he were the secret leader??!!  Because her sin is supposedly enormous.  So unless we get something sappy like 'Betraying true love is the greatest sin', then I do think a great sin would be to kill off your country's leader, spoil their rebellion, and ruin all hope for another one for hundreds of years!

But If Yeonwoo tricked her why would he hang the wine drinking bottle up the tree. Did he think that by returning the wine drinking bottle Manweol will think the captain has severed all his ties to her! It only spurned her more to go see him!!

I can think of a lot of different scenarios, none of which need be true.  I'm just raising it as a possibility based on the way the HS have been using the myths for inspiration so far.  But I really expected the Actaeon myth of voyeurism and reprisal to be part of Man Wol's story, but instead it was the basis for Ghost 13 (and how clever an update was that!).  But we may as well be thinking along these lines and I actually see your scenario above as a possibility.  I think it will be something we haven't thought of yet.

It might tie in to Chang Sun's story - if he's based on Hippolytus as I suspect, CS will be blamed for something he did not do.

  7. Well since we're waiting, I thought I'd give another additional myth spin - this time to Yeon Woo as Apollo - because the Hong Sisters have been unmistakably using the Diana myth and golden bough ritual for inspiration for character, attributes and events. I did a post on that part earlier.  But even though I knew they were using Diana as a pattern of inspiration for Man Wol, I didn't catch on to Apollo as Yeon Woo until I saw him playing that instrument. And if you follow this line of inquiry, Yeon Woo's role seems more concrete.

Apollo is Diana, the moon goddess's, twin brother.  He's the sun god.  I've mentioned before that Yeon Woo is symbolically also the tree (both Diana and Apollo are the laurel tree), and the house he promised to build for her.  If it had been named after him, it would be Hotel del Sol.  It still retains a remnant of him in the name by retaining the masculine article 'del' but attaching the feminine 'luna'.  I'm becoming more convinced this is the reason for the grammatical 'error'!

What else is Apollo the god of that resonates with Yeon Woo?  The Hong Sisters don't spend nearly as much time with him as they do with the Man Wol/Diana comparisons but they give a nod more than once.

Man Wol and Yeon Woo seem like brother and sister, both of them seemingly are rural, of the wild, protectors of the dispossessed.  We see them both with bow and arrow.  This is the original incarnation of Diana/Artemis and Apollo.  Check.

Yeon Woo pointedly went to a fortune teller.  Apollo is the god of seers and prophecy. Check.

Yeon Woo pointedly plays a stringed instrument.  Apollo is the god of stringed instruments. Check.

We've seen very little of Yeon Woo so I don't think it's a coincidence particularly when juxtaposed with all the strong Diana symbolism for Man Wol, and the Diana/Golden Bough ritual that Chang Sun went through to become the manager.

So what does this mean for the future of the story?  I think Yeon Woo loved Man Wol but he was never her lover and would therefore not be reincarnated as such in CS.  He's a brother figure, unable to move on because he is waiting for his sister (ring any bells, with our bellhop for instance?), embodied as twin spirit to Man Wol in the tree and hotel.

I think too we can look to Diana myths for insight into the male roles in the story.  There are four significant males in Diana's life.

Apollo, her twin brother, primarily God of sun, prophecy, music, healing- Yeon Woo

Hippolytus, her companion and warrior-priest, known for his ethics and resistance to temptation-- Chang Sun (think what he says about opening that porn video)

Actaeon, the voyeur who peeked at her naked - we got this story as reflected in the side story of Ghost 13

Orion, another handsome companion predating Hippolytus, who Apollo gets jealous of and causes Diana to kill him with a trick - Captain Firefly?

I know, I don't want Yeon Woo to have been instrumental in the Captain's death by trickery, his smile is too generous, but it's a possibility.

Most interesting to me from all of this is the bellhop waiting for his sister to die.  We have yet another reflection of Man Wol's existence in the ghosts of the hotel, I think.

But the Hong Sisters do it everywhere with the moon goddess myths and their versions are even more hilarious if you know or think you know what they're basing them on.  The dancing grannies in the bus?  My guess is dancing nymphs in Diana's grove.  Lol.

    There's many of their

relationship not revealed yet. And i have faith on him there's big sacrifice within the Captain decision to punished some of MW gangs member and freed MW with the rest gangs.

What's come in my mind is When CS is not his reincarnation He will appear again as Doctor like Mira, or police or volunteers something who has profession involved in humanity or of course when he is the evils spirits we might never met him again in the story . since That's  how rules of reincarnation work does it?

I keep wondering if CM is a ghost! I'm pretty positive Yeon Woo is a ghost, unable to move on until MW moves on, manifesting as hotel and tree.  She's his unfinished business cause he made those promises to her.  Sometimes I wonder if he doesn't possess the managers to persuade them to stay.  When CS tells MW he'll stay with her at the Hotel forever, I wonder if Yeon Woo is possessing him!  Or whispering to him.  If CM is a ghost, he too had unfinished business - I wonder if it is to reveal the truth about that night?  I mean CM died one way or another and became either a reincarnating spirit or a ghost.  He's going to show up as an independent reincarnation, or reincarnated in CS, or a ghost.  Not outside the realm of possibility anyway that he's a ghost!

I watched the first episode again where she is introduced to the resting place of the dead and a persons shadow comes from behind her but when she turns around it's a tree and she punches the tree with the sword, inscribed  with Full Moon . She has a recollection of the past and the two faces she sees are ChungMyung and Yeonwoo!! ChungMyung when they first laid eyes on each other when they fell. Yeonwoo running to her with drinking beer bottle in hand! Mago sends the coffin with its contents to an easy resting place and fireflies appear!

So now Koo Changseong needs to dream from the point of view of  Captain ChungMyung and Yeonwoo to get the full picture , I believe.

I for sure should watch that scene again!  I love that we're interpreting the symbolism and 'visions'/images, I find that so interesting, but we still are not much closer to untangling the two men, which I also like cause it keeps me guessing.  Just hope the answer is satisfying.

Here is just my fun take on the name Hotel Del Luna:lol:

I think the name Hotel Del Luna reflects the owners way of defiance! After all she named it! Mago Shin said it's gone through so many name changes yadda yadda yadda something! Jung Manweol want's someone to come and tell her the spelling is wrong! She's been waiting for a long time!

Maybe Sanchez should tell her to correct the name! and she will be like I will kill you Sanchez!!!

So funny.  And good point - c'mon Sanchez, with a name like that you should have corrected the del a long time ago!

I'm still trying to figure out the del.  My supposition above is my third.  My first guess was that since this script was the original idea for Master's Sun, the hotel was originally supposed to be called Hotel del Sol, in which case del was correct, but when they changed it to moon after a rewrite, they switched to Luna without changing masculine del to feminine de la.

What's the scoop on Sanchez anyway?  Why does he have a Spanish name?  Why is he the opposite to a chaebol heir personality?  Who is Veronica?  Is that a nod to Veronica Park or someone else?  I like the actor and the character, hope we get a story for him.

Did anyone notice the captain had a sword when he came into the bridal room. Me thinks he was coming to kill the princess himself. I think he had agreed to marry the princess in order for her to let the gang go but she still killed them at the end he must have thought to kill her so that no one would go after man wol but man wol had already done it. She must have killed the captain and then figured out the truth somehow which is why she carries so much guilt that both her friend and her love were dead because of her. She mentioned both of them when she was carrying that coffin around to send them both to heaven which why she was looking for the inn. Why would she take them both if the captin had been bad. I still think the captin was trying to save them. his face while looking at her while she was in the prison was not the face of a man gloating his victory. it was that of a man seeing the woman he loves there and not being able to do anything. He was pushing her to hate him and goading her into not giving up and staying alive.

Did she mention both of them?  I will have to rewatch cause I don't remember her mentioning either of them!

I just read that TvN has a write-up on the history: Korea once was Three Kingdoms, Silla, Baekje, and Gogoryeo.  Silla allied with the Tang Dynasty of China to take out Gogoryeo.  The story takes place shortly afterwards.

The princess is a princess of Silla.

The captain is the son of a Gogoryeo nobleman who betrayed Gogoryeo to the Tang, which is why the captain still has a respectable position, etc.

Man Weol and Yeon Woo are not just bandits; they are dispossessed Gogoryeo citizens so when the Captain asks her about whether she'll join the rebellion, this is what he meant: Gogoryeo people trying to rebel against Silla and reclaim their land and country.

I haven't had time to back read (16 pages) on the thread, and only managed to catch up till ep.8 just now....

Gosh, the second half of ep.8 got me crying rivers... :bawling::bawling::bawling: What unfortunate events MW had to endure... no wonder the hate in her heart...

And I thought the standard formula is to have a kiss at ep.8, yet we get a noble idiocy pulled by the FL??

I'm a bit restless re the romance.   I feel like something more needed to happen to convince us a romance exists in GSC's eyes, before splitting the two up.  Yes he says he'll never leave her, but all the managers to date likely said the same thing.  I'd like to see him get jealous or show feelings that go beyond a sister/friend bond.  Some kind of self-realization as we've gotten from MW.  Splitting them up without that hinders the rom of this rom com.

Why do you guys think MW left the hotel? The workers say that she has tried to run away a few times but failed. I wonder what she is running away from? She tried so hard to find the hotel so she wouldn’t run from it would she? I initially thought she is running from the Magos but then she up and left CS. So is she running from love?  what do you guys think?

@brielover i like the theory that it was YW’s love for MW that kept her from becoming a full blown vengeful ghost. However it was also mentioned that Mago was the one who stopped her from being one too. But the tree is indeed MW because it sucked in her sword which is literally herself. YW represents the tree and i found it interesting that it would be mentioned that he will give up his life years for her.

*man, it is too hard to reply on phone* lol!

Yes, it was MaGo, but I've been trying to figure out what makes MW unique so Ma go did what she did, and came to the conclusion it might be Yeon Woo's love not MW that was unique.  A 'sacrificial' (Diana myth), pure, undying, strong, unrequited, selfless, out of the ordinary love - persuaded Ma Go to fulfill Yeon Woo's promise to MW of a house from a tree and extended life, and prevention from becoming a vengeful ghost.

She didn't run from the hotel, it is with her, all the rooms, ghosts and employees and the tree.  She ran because CS is both her liberator and her poisoner.  Her emotions for him are causing her to live again and perhaps move forward from her prison.  However, she will also have to suffer 'wind and rain' if she goes that route and she's scared stiff that means facing her painful past and CM.  She also doesn't believe she will succeed - she thinks she will be disintegrated.  She could just keep CS with her at the hotel, no move forward, but as she says that just means a torture for two prisoners.  She loves him too much for that.

So better to move now so CS is not tortured as a prisoner of her/hotel, or she herself is obliterated with no chance of reincarnation.  Status quo.

Chansung truly did care about manwol tbh.. I just speechless with the way chansung show his trust toward manwol.. No matter what he knew deep down manwol will save him even when she being unreasonable person.. But the fact that even after manwol push mira into the sea he still wondering if manwol is fine and worrying about her really show how manwol meant for him.. Even if this pairing lack skinship or lack confession we can see how much they care about each other.. I just love their build up romance and how honest they are with each other..

Chansung just straightforward telling manwol mira live with him even if he knew she dislike mira.. Also manwol just telling him how she push mira and what she did to lessen her grudge.. I think this couple have the most functional relationship even before they officially a couple.. :D

P.s i really think MW waiting for YW.. To finally forgive herself she need to let go of the guilt that bind her.. Thats why i think manwol said YW is the one that love her the most.. In the end no matter what captain do to protect manwol he still have a say in killing YW.. Their relationship is doom from the start..

I called it a few weeks ago, likely with others, when I said MW was the tree and the tree was the house/hotel.  But I also believe it was Yeon Woo's love and promise that kept MW from becoming a vengeful ghost, that he is part of the hotel and tree too, based on his conversation where he says he'll build her a house from the tree, and also that he'll give her the remaining years of his 100 year life.  CS is the 99th manager so if you count Yeon Woo as 0, that's 100 lifetimes, not years, (and CS was the 0 choice, tying him to Yeon Woo).  The hotel is a prison and a fence - to jail her but also protect her - and will remain so until the geas or an equivalent is removed.  Yeon Woo can't move on either if that's the case and is possibly connected to Room 404. The '0' original, surrounded by 4 symbolic of death? Dunno, but I said in reply to one of growing beautifully's essays that the leaves falling from the tree were indicative of MW's heart softening but might also be YW's benediction.  Possibly.  He loved her, and loved her enough to let her be free to follow her heart last time, even though his hand gesture showed he wanted to call her back. It could be his love was so strong Ma Go was persuaded to grant his wish to protect MW, but that protection is also a prison, just standing still for 1000 years..So Ma Go sent CS to open the path.

    A train of thought.

This would also explain the "del" - I actually don't buy that the Hong Sisters made a mistake in the translation.  I've seen some horrendous translated titles mind you (Fights Breaks Sphere?) so it isn't outside possibility, but this is not some novice translator for Viki getting their articles wrong, this was the name the sisters gave it I believe?  I think they're playing with masculine del and feminine Luna to reflect the hotel itself.  Maybe lol.

Was sharing this opinion on another site (likely unpopular opinion of mine) but thought I'd share here:

Given the fact that in the past royalty and noble/ministers’ families marry each other to gain strength, forces and riches, I wouldn’t be surprised at this point that Cap is of a certain noble status and was due to marry Princess to secure a hold for “peace” and new titles.

But MW appearance gave him the chance to round up bandits (gain credit), help kill Princess (no longer have to be ‘behind her skirt’) as he is now formally married (and then widowed) with the proper title to take over officially. If he gets to kill MW, combo points for killing his wife’s killer.

It probably did cross his mind to be with MW. But MW refused his request. Perhaps he does feel a little scorned. Sad to have to kill them all but still, a little scorned that he was rejected.

If the above is true then Cap is quite a meaty role for a past love.

I hope he is not as vicious as I assume and there are some redeeming points to Cap.

Your scenario is certainly the one I think Man Weol believed, and it might be true.

  16. I'm wondering who MW thinks CS is.  She says to CS, go protect her that's your job, referring to Mira.  Cho Meung was captain of princess's guards so she implies CS is CM.  But then later she says to MaGo, is HE going to show up too?  She can't mean CM if he is reincarnated as CS.  Has she changed her mind about CS being CM?  Or is HE Yeon Wu or someone els e?  Confused.

  17. I am trying to figure out what's so special about MW that she's received unique treatment from MaGo.  Ma go herself calls her a little human so even though MW symbolism is based on moon goddesses, we know she is not a goddess (unless she had done that Chinese God cultivation thing of becoming a human for a stretch of years with no memory of being a goddess?).  She can do superhuman things now like shoot from her hands and move things around and telepor t.

I've been wondering lately if she isn't a Hong Gil Dong figure.  In the Hong sisters' previous Hong Gil Dong drama, HGD was the leader of bandits, stole from rich to benefit poor, and began an incipient democracy hidden away in a secret mountain valley.  His bandits were completely loyal to him.

MW neither past nor present has shown signs of being a HGD type, but is that because we haven't seen much of her past?  Why would her men have followed her even after death?

I agree. It is shown to us that the past MW was different from the 1000 year old one. It is true that she may have repressed most of her memories and thus needs to fill a void. But remember that she also remembers being poor. So I think that for her to be materialistic is her way of making up for what she lacked in her past. Her fate and status in the past hurt and damaged her. So i am thinking her always wanting money and spending it is her way of making herself feel better about how poor she used to be (and her own mental coping mechanism as mentioned above).

Yes, and we were also talking about the ghosts being reflections of her, and we have that trio at the beginning: the one who hadn't had enough to eat; the one who couldn't get warm; and the one who was making up for lost time in education (and remember that MW did not know how to write her name).  I think we can assume MW had these same experiences at one point or another.

I too think it's a combination of deprivation in her youth and trying to fill up the empty emotional spaces in her life with material goods.  Also, on the myth level I've been reading her story on, everything else about her basic personality is accounted for except this greedy materialism, though maybe I just haven't found it.

  19. I liked this episode a lot.  It wasn't as funny as some previous episodes but was just as clever.  My favorite clever bit is using the invitation words to hack the GPS system.  But also, as I've said before, how they creatively updated the Diana and Actaeon myth.  (Diana the moon goddess was spied on having a bath by Actaeon.  In order to shut him up about seeing her naked, she has him torn to pieces).  In this we have a girl spied on with her lover, and when she dies she invites the voyeurs to pornographically peek at her in order to kill them.

The Hong Sisters have already used a number of moon goddess myths this way; I wonder what others might be in store for us!  Plus their shout outs to shows with moon symbolism.  It's fun stuff!

The one thing I found curious is CS grabbing his heart when Room 13 girl died.  Is he so empathetic and loving that his heart aches for her (not out of the question, as we're starting to learn how caring he is)?  Or is his failure to save her a failure in a way to save Man Weol (this ghost is a reflection of her in terms of her personality - revenge/bloodthirsty side)?  Or is this related to this grudge hit we heard about but know nothing more?

Another thing - I liked the first love ghost thing because we are of course dealing with two other first loves - one for MW (Captain) and one for CS (Mira).  But the woman chose her first love over her husband!  What are the Hong Sisters trying to tell us with this story, if anything?  I don't, wondering if you do.

Last, the blind sister and the desk clerk - every time that 'my grandfather's clock' tune starts up I find myself on the verge of tearing up and I don't even know the sad story!

Lots of us watch it online streaming sites which usually have subs out early. Viki is slower at subbing so I usually always go back to watch it when it’s at 100% or more.

If you want, i can send a link where one of the chingus sent here for me too. Let me know.

Otherwise you can simply google “hotel del luna episode 7 with English subs” and options will pop out. I have sites i often use but I can’t post it on here because it is not an official site like Viki. The ones we watch are more secondary subbing sites for dramas ;)

    —-

i will restrain from conducting anymore theories until episode 8 comes. But please, can we get a kiss again soon?

Yes that would be great if you sent me a link! I will Google in the meantime as well.
