The part that took my breath away was a distraught KJH knocking frantically at Dae Chan's door in the wee hours of the morning. HIs worried expression showed how much he cared for CSH. His cute attempt in trying to mask his true purpose (to keep her company) by suggesting that there was a good restaurant nearby....that's our pure KJH!

I was further touched by the authoritative manner in which KJH handled the car accident. All of a sudden, he seemed so mature and confident to me. It seemed rather like he was the oppa to CSH! He may be young but he knew how to manage the situation while taking good care of a shakened CSH. KJH's insistence to drive her home while asking her to get some rest is so sweet....I love his tie zipper sound! lol...I bet the sale of these zipper ties has shot up like a rocket! haha...

The most meaningful moment for me in ep 4 was KJH stepping forward to protect CSH. Someone here shared that there were mixed reviews on this take. He should not do it? CSH didn't like to be embarrassed? I've to say that KJH's decision was the best ever so far! It's the essence of this beautiful love story. I remember his words:

Letting a person come into your heart

Even if it's for a brief moment

I believe such a thing is meaningful

All he wanted at that moment was to be there for CSH. He had felt her loneliness deeply when he asked her secretary:

"Does Ms Cha have no power over her life whatsoever? Is it necessary for her secretary to even make her cut ties with a friend?

.....I'm just surprised every day.

I realized that we really do live in different worlds"

That realization must have driven him to cross into her lonely world because it likely must have pained him to see how different they really are - his, a carefree & happy world; hers, a lonely and controlled world. CSH wasn't least embarrassed at his brave action. There were conflicting emotions but definitely not embarrassment. I could sense a mixture of wonder at his honest admission; surprise; uncertainty; fear and ultimately gratefulness to him for being there for her under that trying situation. KJH had deliberately mentioned "I have the money" to bring her back to Cuba closeness and he succeeded because her expression relaxed with wonderful memories, enough to bring a smile to her face even with the whole world looking on.

KJH and CSH were clearly in their own world by the end of ep 4.

#Boyfriend is just so amazing. PBG and SHK are just awesome with their acting.

A shout to the K-netizens: #Boyfriend can only do good for you! It's sweet; it's touching. It makes you cry but there are happy moments. Most of all, it's the connection between KJH and CSH that tugs at your heartstrings and makes you believe in destiny. And if you find a super-awesome #boyfriend like KJH, count it your blessing! So don't criticize.....

I can't write as good as this comment so please let me quote. :)

K-Drama is like a taste of food, some can attract many audiences but there are still complaints by a few group of people.

Definitely such a few group of people with complaints might attempt much harder to give negatve comments while many audiences with positive comments will spend time re-watching and reading more news/reviews joyfully.

Especially with the hallyu stars as Park Bo Gum and Song Hye Kyo, the nitizens might wanna express their negative comments much more in order to be on spot because such nitizens' comments would be read much more with wider fans.^_^ ;)

The most refreshing thing about this drama so far is that it gives us the traditional tropes but they are executed in new ways. Some people are saying it's predictable or boring but people didn't really expect what happened at the end of episode 4 -- it surprised us all. Most importantly, it gave a new depth to Jinhyuk's character. I've been seeing comments saying he's a flat bubbly character but I don't think those are fair at all because we've yet to see how he seriously responds to conflicts. His decision at the end of the 4th episode showed that there's more to him than we may see. Interfering with the bullying that happened at the end of the 4th episode seems stupid, theoretically. But his decision to protect CSH seemed like a calculated move and not just something he did without thinking at the heat of the moment, so I'm curious how he'll manage challenging authority when he's in a position of subordination? I wonder if he has a trick up his sleeve. I want to get to know Jinhyuk better.

I sincerely hope this drama continues to surprise us.

I like the part of this comment too, it explained so right.

What I love about Encounter so far is  how the plot is moving very fast.

Make no mistake, I love SH - I am sure everyone does.  But the character of JH really surprises me - it is quite unusual in K-drama to have a male lead like him. He is 30 so neither too old or too young. He feels happiness in even the slightest thing around him and open himself to the adventure called life but he is not naive to the point of not understanding the social barrier between him and SH. He probably smiles widely too frequently for other's people liking but he is not an a wide-eyed person as he's been to military and understand his duty as the oldest son of parents who are fruit-seller. Despite his younger age than SH, he acts manly, caring and protective towards her like an equal.

JH is one of the most honest characters I have even watched. He acts on his feeling and does whatever he believes is right. Thanks to his positive attitude, he has lived his life happily until now.

No wonder why his friend says once he sets his eyes on something, he never gives up.  4 episode and I already have not been able to predicted his behavior at all. It takes a brave man like him to make SH happy because he is willing to step into her lonely world despite all obstacles.

the one with short hair is not park na rae, she is  a much senior comedian. on another variety with mung hun

Sorry, I wrote Park Na Rae but I meant Kim Sook. Got their names mixed up:sweatingbullets:

It would be so great if SHK also attended MAMA in Tokyo, good opportunity to promote the drama during this critical stage by the main leads.

@autumnight hahaha your post is making me agree with those comments saying that the stylists have to dress down Jinhyuk quite a bit because he's supposedly poor (although PBG can probably make a potato sack look like runway clothes)

Allow me to digress a bit...

When I saw this scene in Episode 2

I said: "Cha Soo Hyun, at the rate you're driving while looking at Kim Jin Hyuk, you're bound to meet an accident...

And it it actually happened in Episode 4! Aigoo!

The young man has certainly bewitched you!

Okay, I'll be serious now. :)

This is exactly what I meant by little bits of foreshadowing!!  I love this stuff.  I don't want to derail the thread with all my theories so I'm holding them in my heart, but I have so much anticipation for each new episode it's crazy.

New here. First ever post. Really like this drama. Another foreshadowing if I may: CSH is going to help JH make the tie, no more zippy :D

Yes, I have the same thought as you, no more zippy tie :P and it will be very beautiful when CSH help him tying the tie while KJH look at her deeply.

This is why the drama stands out and it's a cut above the rest....what a beautiful, thought-provoking message!

Love all your posts, insights,  how you put your thoughts into words.

Does JH already know that the book he gave SH is also her father's gift?

Then, JH has another reason to say thay they "click".

Their fathers in someways are similar, not just the liking for potato rice cake but for having that "what's going in their mind should never get out in their mouth".

Posted that i jotted down SH's car plate number, now i think, maybe, those 4-wheeled cars are actually a " three-wheel(ed)". If there is anyone or anything that have witnessed the progress of their relationship, its SH cars. From the 1st time JH saw SH getting out the car in front of the hotel up to the time JH hand-over his gift( lipstick).

Ok, now, i'll stay away from that sad ending thoughts and focus on what i read that its a slow-pacing drama , transporting us from the crush stage relationship to a deeper one.

Its a fact that SHK and PBG can't be for real, so i just hope, JH and SH can be.

Hii.. im newbie, decided to jump into the topic because im so hooked up with this beautiful narrative drama. I've been watching this 4 episodes over and over again, in order to survive 3 more days until the next ep. At this rate, i can say: i'm obsessed!!. I'm at the same age as SHK, born in the generation who spending time with manga and novels, i found that Encounter is like reading beautiful novel. I guess everyone here have been thinking the same. It

Giving me the same melancholy as 'Before' trilogy movies, esp. Before Sunrise. I dunno how my heart will survive if JINSOO couple wont be together in the end *brb cry*. Writer-nim pleaseeeeeee give them a happy ending, there's too many sad ending in recent dramas.. SH still need to check what JH wrote at the cafe, also i guess the garden that JH visited and met the old man is the same hotel that Donghwa will built together with Havana hotel (just my theory haha).Hope they'll meet there, and as the old man said at the garden "the love began here and completed here". I'll pray for happy ending!!!!!!!!

Encounter: The Drama Everyone is Talking About

December 8, 2018 Roxanne Wilson

Encounter has been at the tip of the tongue of every drama fan since the cast list was confirmed. The drama marks the return of hugely popular actor Park Bogum and actress Song Hyekyo after a two-year hiatus, their previous works being Love in the Moonlight and Descendants of the Sun, respectively. With the drama casting such huge actors in the Korean entertainment industry, everyone and their mothers were talking about what production would come out of this collaboration. The drama finally made its premiere on November 28.

Story Synopsis: Episode 1

Based on the brief summary on the drama’s main page, the story doesn’t seem particularly intriguing or anything more than the traditional rich and poor person cliché love story, so it’s easy to go into this viewing experience somewhat cynically. The story begins with a brief visual introduction of our heroine Cha Soohyun, taking us through a star-studded life since a young age—at least based on appearances. After a quick recap, the viewers find themselves with present day Soohyun, divorced but CEO of a major hotel chain. The story begins with her on the move to open a hotel in Havana, Cuba.

Through the first half of the episode, we follow Soohyun’s story, showing her strained life as a divorceé, still working for her mother-in-law and forced to deal with her ex-husband on a regular basis. She’s presented as an emotionally reserved and even cold woman who keeps everyone at arm’s length. The first glimpse of her having a close friend doesn’t come until she’s off work, and her secretary is out and about; the two have an informal phone call.

Kim Jinhyuk is introduced as the story’s setting shifts to Havana. He’s shown wandering the city on his own to take photographs of people and sceneries—just in general enjoying the atmosphere and being present in the moment. His introduction to Soohyun begins with an unfortunate traffic accident; her car runs into the table he’s seated at, and his vintage camera is thus damaged. Though the two don’t meet then, the gears of fate begin turning.

After taking a couple sleeping pills, Soohyun decides she wants to go see a local legendary sunset spot, even though she ends up having to go alone. Her naiveté is apparent after a series of unfortunate events, including getting pickpocketed and taking a long walk that causes blisters on her heels.

The sleeping pills she took begin to take effect as she sits waiting for the sunset alone on the edge of a large ledge, and at the last moment Jinhyuk catches her before she falls over. He ended up running into her on the street earlier and it’s implied he followed her to that spot. She falls asleep on his shoulder for a short period of time before waking up disoriented just in time for the sunset, which the two then share.

With no money, Jinhyuk offers to escort her back to her hotel safely, but the two keep stumbling upon distractions on the way that lead to very cute and lovely moments. From sharing a beer after the sunset to the two walking barefoot down the street and attending a salsa dance event, Jinhyuk’s free spirit is infectious to Soohyun and she ends up unwinding for the spontaneous night with Jinhyuk.

It’s clear the two do not want to part when the time comes, and Jinhyuk takes the leap to ask her to breakfast the next morning. But Soohyun gets wrapped up in a spontaneous meeting that morning and misses her chance to meet with Jinhyuk, leaving a rather melancholy feeling in the air as she makes for the airport. However, the fate of the duo becomes clear as they end up on the same flight back to Korea.

The first episode ends with Jinhyuk putting the pieces together and discovering that Soohyun was the CEO of a hotel chain he had applied to for a job. Upon landing in Korea, he gets a call letting him know he passed the first round of interviews for the position. And so begins the fateful love story of the rich CEO woman and the poor, lower income man.

Visuals, Character Tropes, and Controversies

One of the characteristics that many viewers were struck by was the absolutely stunning cinematography of the first episode. It was somewhat of a surprise that the story chose to take place in Cuba—a historical alliance of North Korea—but the filming locations and visual setup were absolutely gorgeous in a way that’s difficult to articulate. The Latin culture really shines through in the first episode, especially with Jinhyuk’s adventures through the city, and Havana’s diverse population was also showcased very well. The early scenes between Soohyun and Jinhyuk are also shot in a way that is guaranteed to get your heart fluttering!

While the character tropes are fairly standard for something along the lines of Cinderella, the gender roles are reversed in this story. Soohyun represents the “rich and emotionally distant” trope, while Jinhyuk represents the “carefree, less fortunate but emotionally rich” trope that is often taken by the female in this type of story. Jinhyuk’s demeanor is incredibly open and genuinely sweet in a way that’s almost addicting, especially in comparison to the male leads of recent shows that are so emotionally closed off, they appear totally flat. Everything about him so far appears to be the paragon of a good guy, which is definitely the kind of male lead I need after the emotionally exhausting and conflicting personality of Kim Mooyoung (Seo Inguk) in The Smile Has Left Your Eyes.

But despite all the positive things I’ve had to say so far, there is still a controversy brewing around Encounter. Some fans are expressing their discomfort with the 12-year age gap between Song Hyekyo and Park Bogum. It’s not unheard of for K-Drama actors to have surprising age gaps, but in general it’s often between an older actor and younger actress. In this case, the roles are reversed as well, and some may say that the former is more accepted by fans as opposed to the latter. Whether or not that is the case, it should be considered a moot point since this age difference isn’t anywhere near the biggest gap that has happened in Korean entertainment. That being said, this controversy will likely blow over fairly quickly.

Encounter has only just begun, but it has already managed to suck me into the story and romance. If you’re like me and need a break from the heavy, angst-filled, and emotionally exhausting dramas of late, this seems to be a good choice so far. I can only hope that fact remains as the story progresses.
