@amisyka77 That is adorable, but I would not at all be angry if they move that up to episode 15 lol, and then do the extra chapters in episode 16.

Haha...if they make it in ep 14 or 15, I am more than elated. Who know if they would be generous  for us hungry audience. Just hate to up my hope too high.

I agree that Mi Rae needs to hear she’s pretty, which isn’t the issue with what Woo Young said. My issue was more that he suggested no one would like a “not pretty” girl, which validates Mi Rae’s old self-hatred. Kyung Seok may be more attracted to MR now than before, but he still knows not to treat her as an object even when she’s not in front of him. That’s the difference to me and why he is the male lead and not the runner up lol.

As for TY and TH, you’re absolutely right that he wasn’t as physically attracted to her as he let on. But that’s kind of where WY’s theory of “everyone has their type” falls apart. Society’s biases affect personal types, so it’s not just a matter of everyone liking something different. He mentioned “some” people like thinner girls with fairer skin, but fat phobia and racism/colorism are real problems that originate from higher up in society, does that make sense? I think it’s interesting that the show touched on that even if they aren’t going all the way with it.

Yes, I understand your point but you have to imagine it from WY's perspective. First he has no real idea that KMR has suffered from bullying due to her face for such a long time. When she mentioned that she got PS, since it is common in SK, he just thought that KMR did it like other girls who want to improve her looks. Therefore his statement that "a guy would like a pretty girl" is normal. No guy would fall in love with a girl that he doesn't find attractive/pretty. WY is not that close to KMR and HJ to know her past. KMR never confided it to him. Then WY has no idea how people can be easily influenced... WY seems to be a strong-willed and very independent person who doesn't care what people think. In that aspect, he is similar to DKS but unlike DKS, he never really witnessed what CW did to KMR. He only heard it through others... hence he is not aware of her nickname as Gangnam Beauty.

I think we should all be patient and accept the fact that this drama depicts the webtoon diligently and we MIGHT not get any kiss as we highly anticipated soon. I'm not having high hope about it. High chance is we will get it in the finale, because they kissed in the webtoon on KS's birthday ( which is not mentioned yet so far) and that's at the end of the webtoon. Anyway, I have no complaint. Their interactions and chemistry so far exceed my expectation as the webtoon reader and I love their deep insightful conversation too much that I am not so obsess with their first kiss. If it will only happen in he finale, if they make it as cute and flattering as in the webtoo, I am more than happy.

  Reveal hidden contents

It's KS birthday and MR was comtemplating on what to buy for his present. She asked him and he said what he wanted is something that cannot be bought and wanted her to think about it. MR somehow had some idea that he wanted a kiss but she was too embarrrased to think much about it. After the birthday date, he was anticipating it and she somehow got the courage to ask him if a kiss is what he had wanted. She gave him a peck and he protested annoyingly and demanded she did it correctly so she went for it and they, well.. finally had a passionate first kiss.

Gonna be looking forward to that. I hope that even if she gives him a peak only that he'll pull her in for a longer better kiss.

It's like gonna be episode 13 already, just give us a kiss. A good one, too.

But the kiss scene is in extra chapter. Right now its still in chapter 56, there are still 24 chapter left + 4 extra chapter. I will be satisfied even if its happened in the final episode

Very true! But on the bright side, some of the stuff from future chapters has already happened in the drama. And others, like Soo Ah’s 3-4 chapter backstory, can be taken care of in just a few scenes.

I just hope that they dedicate a decent amount to the new relationship even as they wrap up the other storylines.

I read this article this morning and I was surprised to find "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" was mentioned in it so I thought I will share it with you :)

[Article translation] "I am chubby, so what?... The fight against lookism"

Korea's superficialism is extraordinary. As in any society, pursuing a beautiful appearance is present, but the degree of 'beauty' uniformity is particularly severe in Korea. It is definitely the mass media that took the lead. Each girl group on TV has large double eyelids, big eyes, a slim nose and S shaped waist. Many advertisements run with the tag 'women must be thin.'

"In a competitive and achievement-oriented Korean society, appearance has become a value that can be immediately assessed," said Professor Chung Sung-Ho of Dankook University.

Korea's pop culture, however, has been rebelling against "superficialism" recently. Female viewers are also positively responding. The lead is Lee Young-ja, a broadcaster. Lee Young-ja's swimsuit was the keyword that controlled real-time search words on portal sites on August 9th. Lee Young-ja revealed her figure in a swimsuit at an outdoor swimming pool. Lee Young Ja said after that: "You tell me I'm proud but that's not really it. I also don't think I have that good a figure. However at the risk of losing, I am fighting against society's perception and my pride."

In Korean society, the term 'fatty' is a long standing source of comedy. Comedians do not hesitate to use their own "fatness" as a subject of self-deprecating gags.

A boyfriend struggling with an overweight girlfriend, a chubby woman hitting a man lightly and he flies away... these are still comedic tropes repeatedly used eventhough they're cliché by now. This is the kind of "battle against society's perception" that Lee Young Ja means.

There is another celebrity who became a hot topic last month besides Lee Young Ja. It's singer Ailee. Ailee was on JTBC "Hidden Singer" and talked about dieting. "I was sad that I had to go on a diet to be on stage. It was nice to look at but it was the most depressing feeling when I sang in my skinny body." Those last words resonated the most. "I've now decided not to care. I am happy with myself, I am happy with my songs. I think it's more important to love your body."

After the broadcast, an online outpouring of support followed "You are beautiful as you are now, please show us more good singing from now on."

Lee Na-young, a sociology professor at Chung-Ang University, said: "After the murder case at Gangnam Station, a new wave of women's movement has been formed, and women's perception that they will be treated as a person rather than a sexual object has been strengthened. It seems that the trend-conscious media has accepted the idea."

(The murder case they're referring to is the "2016 Seochodong public toilet murder case" which was the start of the anti misogyny movement in Korea. You can read more about it here: Misogyny in South Korea: Murder in Gangnam & Murder at Gangnam Station: A Year Later, & LA Times Article)

In recent years, there has been a body positivity movement centered on civil society in the U.K. and the U.S., and it has also been popular in advertising and marketing areas that have quickly adopted it. The U.S. underwear brand, "Aerie" took the lead in the trend by using a woman with an unaltered body, and sales increased 33 percent in the first half of the year. In Korea, the interest in women's human rights has increased since the murder in Gangnam Station in 2016, and women's rights movements such as Mee Too and -Tal Corset (Take off your corset) have emerged.

You can read about Tal Corset here: "Women in South Korea are fighting back against unfair beauty standards, and getting rid of the things that constrain them."

The recent KBS2 'Superman Returns' case shows the public's perception that has become strict about lookism. Park Chu-ho's family appeared on the air on the 19th. The production team made comments on Park's four-year-old daughter, titled "Highly beautiful," and narrator Do Kyung-wan said, "She looks better than Suri Cruise in my eyes." "She is art, art".  After the broadcast, many viewers expressed their displeasure: "Park Na Eun is a cute kid so Park Na Eun is cute, why pit her against Suri Cruise" and "Why would you put a standard of beauty on her, are we even doing this to little kids?"

Trend-sensitive dramas have also raised the issue of lookism. The JTBC drama 'My ID is Gangnam Beauty' deals with this issue throughout its entire work. Kang Mi-rae (Lim Soo-hyang), who was suffering from an "ugly look", eventually undergoes plastic surgery, but this time she suffers from the sarcastic treatment of the  "Gangnam Beauty" tag. Hyun-ah, a natural beauty that haunts Kang, is also shown as being obsessed with her appearance, revealing that everyone in the end is a victim. The ratings rose to 5.4 percent from 2.9 percent and both the drama and the webtoon are experiencing popularity. (Article about a woman pursuing the Gangnam look)

Kim Kyo-seok, a pop culture critic, says: "The mecanism that promotes superficialism still exists in the media, but resistance to existing customs and the emergence of feminism is an emerging reaction to counter it."

Professor Lim Myung Ho adds: "There is a negative side to the current trend of appearance obsession. Young people tend to have a narrower and more uniform standard of appearance as they have a strong desire to harmonize with idols. The role of media to promote diversity is just as important in beauty."

@coldcucumber, that was a very insightful article. Thanks for sharing.

I saw that Lee young-ja bikini picture in the latest "hello counsellor"

That lady is a very beautiful lady but because she is fat, she has always come under constant criticism. Watch her in hello counsellor and u will see the problems and challenges women face daily in Korea boldly written  all over her. U dont have to be a buffoon cos its not healthy but nothing is wrong with having chubby skin.

U see a full matured woman of 30 something years weighing 40kg. Hmn. They should take it easy in this their beauty standard.

And I'm happy their celebs are fighting against this cancerworm. After the mandatory military service, their actors always go under the knife before a comeback. Unless you don't want to receive script again, u must do something to your face to look younger and appear more chiselled.

@happyboy I loved reading your post about DKS, SA and the father. I definitely agree with you that because he grew up with such a selfish and superficial father, he learnt to perceive better people's personality. But I would like two aspects:

- There is another reason why DKS never wanted to get close to SA. Since she is beautiful, DKS already had a negative image of her. Why? Because of his mother... his mother looked beautiful, however in DKS's mind she abandoned them. Therefore he started mistrusting people who are considered pretty. Only much later, he learnt the real reason why his mother left home... nevertheless, when he started going to the college, he had this habit to doubt pretty people. Then he is a good observant as he was able to witness SA's tricks.

- The other aspect is about SA's mental state. In this picture quoted from @tianaa 7b49c30e5a56ae30671bcf0c70241e145dfaf1a5 DKS realizes that SA is different from his father DSW. The latter might be selfish and superficial BUT he is not so self-centered like her. Unlike SA, he gave up on his wife, when she decided to leave him. SA is so obsessed with DKS that she will do anything to get what she wants.

Finally, I would add another observation. SA is quite arrogant, when she describes herself as natural beauty. In her mind, since she didn't do any PS, she is superior to KMR. She is also superior to other women as she is a good eater and remains slim. But is she a natural beauty?

Based on the last episode, we caught her lying to the others. She described herself as someone who would gain no weight no matter how much she would eat. In her way, she was saying that her body condition is so good that she doesn't need to pay attention to her weight. She is different and even superior to other women who have to be careful.... On the other hand, we saw her taking pills in order to lose weight. Not only did she lie about her "so called natural good body disposition" but also she is hiding the fact that she took medicine. This outshines that she is not a natural beauty. In fact, she is controlling her body and is not different from the other women. Even if she doesn't do any PS, she is not a natural beauty as she uses other ways to remain thin (later for example forcing herself to vomit). In the last episode, it was clear that she was also putting down the other women as she tried to show the others that she is a good eater. To conclude, she is not targeting only KMR but the other female students in the end.
