[Drama 2018] Something In The Rain / Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food, 밥 잘 사주는 예쁜 누나

Recommended Posts

Finally the subs are out (HORRENDOUS SUBS I might add:rolleyes:) , albeit it's just ONE ep. for now-_- sadness~ (sigh) the struggles of a non-korean viewer blergh:tongue:

Jung Hae-In : the way he looks at his pretty lady, Son Ye-Jin dear GOD. If that doesn't make your heart race then you...my dear must be dead (I'm not kidding) Their chemistry feels natural not forced which makes it (their pairing) so much better. Of course Ye-Jin always has easy chemistry with most of her male co-stars. I agree with Hae-In she's truly gorgeous. So lucky she is - I'm jealous HA.

I like the Stand By Your Man cover the drama keeps playing. The scene where Ye-Jin dances to I Am The Best by 2ne1 LoL girl has got moves.

Who would have thought the singers were Carla Bruni (Stand By Your Man) and Bruce Willis (Save The Last Dance For Me) ?! I'm playing the songs on repeat right now.

As far as I can see, I'm not the only one :phew: (I'm listening these two songs and I'm the best - 2NE1 again and again). I think we've listened at least 3 more songs in the drama. Does anybody know their names? I need my 'Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food Playlist' :sweatingbullets:.

Edit: I've found one more song, but no idea about its name or the singer.

The latest one where they kissed should be by Rachel Yamagata. I read about it this week, and when I searched for this singer in YouTube, her voice is the same :) Thanks for finding the YouTube video of the new song, I'm certain it is going to be a huge hit.

Ahahahah Hae-Jin immediate hiccup after Ye-Jin held his hand was SO CUTE! Ugh her ex is like a mosquito that refuses to go away:rolleyes: That other female co-worker crushes on Hae-Jin as well-_- Is it bad I only fast forward to just watch scenes of our OTP LoL?!:D The rate of their romance is pretty quick which worries me 'cause there might be trouble ahead in later ep.:(

@122am

So that's who it's by! I was going insane searching for the name of artist LoL! Thanks for the info.

Yeah, re-reading my post I can see why it's unclear.

Basically, I like the idea of keeping the order too, so instead of having to continuously refresh the thread while translating, I'm suggesting that maybe you can take the first 6 clips posted on youtube and I can take the last 6 (or vice versa) so that way we both have our "designated" ones without any overlap and the order is saved.

And this really only applies for Saturday episodes because I'm usually working on Friday and most likely won't be able to translate then.

I don't think your idea would preserve the video order unless the person translating the second set of clips held off until the person translating the first set of clips had finished posting. I think perhaps we just do spot checks to see what's been translated before we start a translation? And, if we happen to both double translate a scene or two, I think the thread will forgive us. :)

Btw, I sent you a DM, so I hope you've read it and are considering it. :)

I think this drama is going to go through their whole relationship from the some that is starting to develop now until whatever the finale is, but that finale had better not be the two of them deciding that it's not going to work after all.

But whatever the ending ultimately does, it's a beautifully filmed drama. I might even suggest that you go ahead and watch it raw if subs aren't released soon. I still think you would be able to understand a lot of what's going on without subs. And, it is just so darn cute. This OTP are killing me. I think JA does look older than JH, but she is also sexy and gorgeous, and it's totally believable that JH would have been crushing on her all of his life. JH, as well, is sweet, sexy, cheeky, and kind, so he has noona-slayer written all over him already. So, I can totally see them together, and their combined visual is outstanding.

Plus, this production does these unexpected riffs, like the music used thus far of Carla Bruni's Stand By Your Man and Bruce Willis' Save the Last Dance For Me. Totally unexpected choices of music once it was figured out who the artists were. Another unexpected riff was a scene where JH is riding his bike around JA. It kind of reminded me of a similar bicycle scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I don't know that it was an allusion to that scene or not, but in terms of how light-hearted and happy a moment it is for both leads, it was just beautifully done, and without many verbal cues necessary to enjoy it.

Anyway, I am totally not expecting a sad ending, though given this team's track record, I'm expecting a complicated, thoughtful progression of the relationship and consideration of the various obstacles involved with their choices. Not to mention some steaminess. :D

Yup, nodding along to the "beautifully filmed",  "outstanding combined visuals" comments.

NOT expecting a sad or unexpected breakup ending either ... BUT there are emerging (maybe) worrisome signs. Often everything is rosy-romantic in the euphoria of love and the fun of a new relationship. But those traits can become something else when life throws challenges one's way, longer term.

(1) JA is more realistic about those potential obstacles, JH's optimistic they will face them ...  but whether he's grounded enough to maturely solve them with her,  remains to be seen. (I still register that all the glass picking and mess was ultimately done by JH's sister ... while he was trying to calm himself down).

(2) While super-lovable charming,  adoring puppy and such a teaser ... JH is NOT exactly what you would call entirely responsible, and a tad rash-impulsive, and prone to anger. Yes "noona slayer" all right, and so pro player at teasing her ... and basically pushing her into corners to coax out all his answers (as JA's herself has said).

Granted this puppy is in the first flush of love (and in 7th heaven that it's all reciprocated by JA too  )  but him just making excuses and sneaking off work one day, and then making comments like "he can just quit" another day,  to follow her on her assignment with the obnoxious supervisor, is coming across as a little iffy. He's not exactly above lying now and then everywhere to get by either - whether at work or to SY (her interested colleague).   (Sorry this is just the realistic and cynical ajjuma in me, in between the squeeing and squealing. What to do? The romanticism and realism co exists side by side in me  :P)

(3) JA's mom's twisted expectations for her future life partner as well and hopeful that she will patch things up with cheating GM (it's so revealing as to WHAT seems imp. in a partner to mom). And those conditions are nothing remotely like JH. As it is, oma's already commenting that KS's and JH's family situation and background would be a disadvantage. Imagine if HER own daughter was the one to marry into such a family - never in oma's wildest dreams.

(4) His temper - you see glimpses of it, now and then. When he becomes all dark and broody.

I hope it's never ever used on her.

Music here is nicely nostalgic,  loving it  = my late dad used to play these tunes, many moons ago when I was a kiddo, and throughout growing up. And the older singer of Stand By Your Man (Tammy Wynette) was one of his favorites.

That combination of Contemporary + Vintage feels has always  been the vibe I enjoy about almost yearly visits to Seoul, and also the same denominator combination,  in many of my favorite dramas.

To be fair to JH, he had started picking up the mess when he overheard KS yelling at JA and went over to them. Then, when he couldn't contain himself any longer and started saying something, KS pushed him outside. KS also pushed JA outside as well, saying she didn't want to see JA and that she KS would clean up.

I think JH is mischievous by nature, but I don't think he's childish. I do think he has a responsible side, which he keeps low key with his smile and his joking. He holds down a good job, and he has been on his own for awhile, including the 3 years that he spent taking care of himself in America. And, while KS as his older sister protected him some, when their mother died and their father abandoned them, JH probably grew up quite quickly because of it.

There is a serious side to JH, including the temper that you noted. Btw, I seriously doubt that he would ever turn his temper on JA in any serious way, mostly because I doubt that he would unleash his anger on a woman, especially having been raised by an older sister.

However, he is also a confident man in the prime of his life, used to having female attention. And, as the dramas has taken some pains to show, JH hasn't exactly been a saint all of his 31 years. I think that's good actually in terms of the viability of his romance.

Interesting observation, though I wasn't noticing it as a serious character flaw. JH isn't a saint, by any means, but in general, he seems to be working hard when he isn't escorting JA. As you've said, he's not above a little lie to get him out of something he doesn't want to do to go do something he does want to do, but they don't seem to be significant lies.

Also, I can see JH being protective of JA, and wanting to go with her on the overnight trip. And, actually, without JH being there, JA may not have stood up to her creepy senior manager, and spent another evening basically playing a modern day gisaeng for those creepy men who would have been grabbing for some skinship.

And given that JH seems to be a well regarded games artist and designer, I don't think there was anything serious about quitting his job. It was a flippant answer to a serious question because he was determined to go with JA on her trip.

Yes, JA's mom is definitely going to be a problem. When she tells her daughter to forgive a man's infidelity because he comes from a good family and has good qualifications meaning occupation, university, etc., that shows where her values lie. Given that she had taken her husband to task for seeing another woman before as well, though it seems to have been before they were married, perhaps she's taking GM's discretions too lightly. Then again, JA has also not told her family about having been attacked by GM either. Still, it's hard to hear the mom tell JA to hold onto GM even though JA told her mom that GM had cheated on her. How could a mother think her daughter would be happy in a relationship like that?

Totally agree the music in this drama has been such a surprise actually, with not just nostalgic, but surprising versions of the old standards. I mean, seriously, Bruce Willis and Carla Bruni? Bruce Willis put out 2 or 3 albums way at the start of his career after he first became popular on a tv show, but the music career fizzled. I'm not sure how musically big Carla Bruni may be in France, but I only knew her as Sarkozy's babe and had no idea she sang until this drama. So, both versions are well-known standards sung by artists who are famous for things other than as singers. I think it's kind of a brilliant move actually.

Also, I'm hoping the song choices reflect a happy ending, so that JA stands by her man come hell or high water, and JH will always be looking to take JA home at the end of the day. :)

Btw, I like Rachael Yamagata's OST as well with it's bluesy vibe. It doesn't hurt that it was the bgm for the kiss.

These subtitles are good quality or not?

The credits are dss subs. Isn't that fan subs from machine subs from the Chinese subs? From Darksmurfs. It's my personal opinion only. But these subs do not look like the Elite QC subs. But then I wouldn't know. I watched only 5 min of ep 1. And I recognise it when it is machine subs still. The nonsensical words are still there when it was uploaded.

The names for ep 1 and 2 are credited to different ppl except for muiiya.

I say this with no malice as  their Elite QC subs are usually good. I just haven't bothered to log directly onto DSS to see which stage it is in. Kdrama is obviously important in my life and so are the subbing quality I get. Therefore I tend to keep an eye on what's happening in the subbing world. Including how much the team is paid. Cos' I am a sticky beak. Lol.

And as it is VIU subs ( the majority of the subs for all Kdramas ) are variable depending on the subbers. But the ep 1 subs are definitely way below that. I am not watching it with those subs. Better off waiting for the soompi team subs I say. Or watch raw.

f0ezY9o.gif everyone! Hello Pretty Noona's fandom!

May I crash this party (and I'll try to be as scarce and invisible as I can) :unsure:gxg42fY.png

mKhqme3.gif

It's been a long time since I was last getting all excited over a drama/OTP and posting on soompi. <_< I think this Pretty Noona and her flower boy cutie is that X-factor and the magic wand that can snap me out of hibernation. LOL.  I'm also a SYJ fan and have been missing her on the small screen for a long time.

Just as I was cheering for sophistication maximus, Kim Nam Joo, when she appeared in Misty (prior to this drama) after a long break. I was close to crashing that party... Anyway, so glad to see both these beautiful ladies doing what they do very well, again. Pretty Noonaaa... SYJ, FIGHTING! As for JHI, he's pretty new to me. But, oh boy, he's making my heart flutter along with Pretty Noona, and who could have thought the sizzle they could both cook up is such food for thought and fodder for squeals?  *more squeals* LOL.

Watching this OTP as they get to know one another better, as they fall in love, and more(!) is like listening to very good music. Undoubtedly, those OST/BGMs that are liberally played during the drama are so well-selected and timed, they certainly add layers of flavor to the drama, as well as add to the flavor of the OTP-sizzle well. Wasn't it Shakespeare who once said, in Twelfth Night:

Quote

Spoiler

"If music be the food of love, play on,

Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,

The appetite may sicken, and so die."

I bet none of us will ever be sickened by an excess of their lovey-dovey sweetness. In fact, we'll all survive cavities and diabetes, and whatnots, and still be begging for more. LOL. Or am I thinking out loud, on my own? :o Seriously, I enjoy this budding romance, and I can't help but cheer them on. Who says a man has to be older to make a perfect match? Who says age has to be plastered on a woman's face to numerate her appeal or lack thereof?  Who says love has to take a backseat to qualification of family background or financial status? Besides, their age difference is almost non-existent, her beauty (regardless of age) is undeniable, and their family backgrounds aren't that widely apart. I think it's more important (for OTP) to just listen to your own heart, and to each other's heart. If both could flutter mutually, that's a very good start. Methinks.

And,  methinks this OTP/their chemistry/their blooming romance is:

Quote
Spoiler

"So full of shapes is fancy,
That it alone is high fantastical."

On the subject of food, I must lament the change (of focus) in the title of this drama. I love the original title—Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Fooda lot more than what it is now—Something In the Rain. I thought the original title conveys the underlying theme of food/eating well, and which so aptly sums up the evolving relationship between JA and JH - the acquaintancy, the normalcy, the intimacy, and more. Especially in the context of Koreans/Asians, there's much more than meets the eye when food is shared, and is partaken together. Not only does one not have a meal casually with just anyone, but doing so usually (IMO) means, 'I want to get to know you better', 'Let's have a good time and enjoy good food together', 'The team has to eat together to get comfortable together, as well as be more productive at work', 'I care about you and your health/well-being', and so on. Besides, one can partake from a mere meal, a little to a lot about the other's behavior, etiquette, personality, and so on.  When done on a regular basis, the closeness becomes tighter, the trust that's shared becomes stronger, and so too the increasing intensity of sentiment shared, indisputable. JH tries to spend more time with JA on the pretext of having Pretty Noona buy him food. Of course, there's little doubt that JA agrees on the same pretext as well, perhaps starting off subconsciously.  As for the new title, hmm...  the purchase of one red umbrella (bet the symbolism is thrown right at viewers, as giddy as we may be) and sharing it that one rainy night? Are we to expect that their relationship will be rained upon with societal and familial frowns? Or that we'll be getting rained upon with lots of skinship? Hehehe.

aE9FD0P.jpg

The ending of Ep 3 is enthralling. I could not stop rewatching it! Quick-thinking Pretty Noona can sure give cutie dongsaeng a 'killer' hiccup which he'll of course be too glad to die for! LOL. I love the subtle hand-holding to hands-holding progression. This dongsaeng is neither a kiddo nor a mere follower. He's ready to be a man, and ready to take on an active role.  Yes, JH! Fighting!

Spoiler

PHNxsfI.gif

Their first kiss by the beach in Ep 4, ohhh... so sweet and natural. They feel so real, so natural that I feel like I'm intruding upon their privacy. Now I'm all eyes in anticipation of their first bed scene.  I know. It's a TV drama. <_<

Spoiler

GIF_firstkiss.gif

Oh well, here we go, the beginning of a ride that'll be sweet and heady at first, then breathtaking and bumpy along the way. Yet, as giddy as I may be right now, there's a foreboding vibe where someone's simple-mindedness and short-temper may explode on someone's obsessive and vengeful behavior, and I shudder to think of how that will end. Why oh why did JA even begin to date a man like GM? And tolerating him and his awful behavior for so long? I think JA letting GM off that easily in that harassment incident in the cafe would come back to haunt her. Actually, it would be to haunt JH, and causing him to act impetuously. Hope not.

Is the ending of Ep 4, with that empty walkway, a sign of something ominous brewing? As if a storm will be raging soon? Or that OTP's love boat will already be on the rocks as soon as it sets sail? Or is it meant to 'encourage' viewers to go wild with imagination of what's happening behind closed door? This PD is very skillful in this aspect. He knows what 'pots and pans' (haha, SLA fans would know) can do to viewers! LOL.

Spoiler

GIF_ep4_ending_emptyhallway.gif

Yet, I'm game. No, I'm hooked! Blue Swede-ishly 'Hooked on a Feeling'. I guess JH will soon be humming this exact tune, to himself and to JA, if not already. Crossing my fingers for this feeling to continue to be good. And fluttery. I'm in love, again!

"If music be the food of love, play on..."
