[Drama 2018] Mother, 마더

Recommended Posts

Very2 touching indeed.. we get to peep into whts going in in the minds of adopted kids, esp those being abandoned.

We have few being adopted in our family.. usually this subject is taboo and not discussed in the open, most often secret is never revealed to them at least until they reach adulthood.

But for those who knew (like SJ here) including me, I often wondered how they must have felt not knowing their own roots..

"Mother - Drama" Nominated for 1st Cannes International Series Festival

photo955661.jpg

In some surprising and exciting news, "Mother - Drama" has been selected as a competitor for the first ever CANNESERIES, Cannes International Series Festival. My cynicism over awards and dislike for the support Cannes has shown for problematic figures aside, this is a great opportunity for Korean content abroad.

Cannes representative Alvin Lewi has stated that only 10 series from 9 countries were selected, and that he is personally glad to see "Mother - Drama" on board. The series festival will be the main event of the MIPTV 2018 (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision or The Global TV and Digital Content Market). "Mother - Drama" has accomplished no small achievement, as the series made it in against 130 contenders.

a class='liennormal' href=

The 10 selected will have their first episodes screened at the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière, with "Mother - Drama" specifically screening on April 9th, at 12:00 PM CET. The ceremony will be held on April 11th, and the red carpet event will be attended by director Kim Cheol-gyoo, writer Jeong Seo-kyeong and leading actresses Lee Bo-young and Heo Yool-I. Writer Jeong Seo-kyeong previously attended for her film "The Handmaiden", and now she brings the first ever Korean drama to Cannes.

Meanwhile, Studio Dragon director Park Jee-young has stated "We are glad that "Mother - Drama" has been received as a quality drama. Currently, the reality of child abuse in society is much more painful than in the drama. "Mother - Drama" is about motherhood and family. We think that the drama is very timely. I'd like to thank the brilliant actors of "Mother - Drama", as well as director Kim Cheol-gyoo and writer Jeong Seo-kyeong for their outstanding work".

My personal joy over this nomination does not only come from the possibility of Korean drama content becoming more known to the world, but from what this could mean about its creators being more daring with the quality of their shows. In an ideal world, the work's great local and global reception will be a case for solid writing, good acting and strong characters.

Of course, cynical me is just waiting for the barrage of sensationalist, tear-jerker parent-child stories trying to replicate this. Unfortunately, big industries are run by persons who largely care about the monetary aspect of things, leading them to chase after the non-existent recipe for success, rather than good content, or the value of entertainment as art, and as a society- and person-changing medium.

Will "Mother - Drama" be another stepping stone into giving creators that ever-elusive freedom to reach for quality over popularity, will copycats appear, or will this simply be another ceremony and another day in Dramaland? I don't have the answer to that, but I do know that "Mother - Drama" deserves every praise, and every recognition it has been and will be given.

one of the differences of the show from the original is that madam cho is the one who takes center stage while in the original its the birth mother who apparently have sacrificed herself while SJ have killed the abusing man as a child , though it was never explained

the change of focus as well as giving the show a korean flavor ( the PD SAID THE JAP ORIGINAL WAS TOO DRY ) IT might also to stress the effect of the sub adoptive mother to put her and SJ in the same woven thread

K-Drama Reaction: Mother | Final

vlcsnap-2018-03-24-19h18m52s433.png

After a long journey of sacrifices, forgiveness, and healing, we’ve finally reached the end. The road was surely not easy but it taught us a lot of lessons about life, motherhood, and unconditional love.

Soo-jin (Lee Bo-young)’s bid to adopt Yoon Bok (Heo Yool) was proven not easy. Just because her probation period was over doesn’t mean her criminal record has been erased. And with the home group mom bent on giving Yoon Bok what she deemed a better future for her, Soo-jin had a difficult time proving she’s fit to become her mother. Honestly, I almost lost hope that Soo-jin would be able to adopt Yoon Bok because the home group mother wouldn’t concede to her. But just like any mother who couldn’t take to see their child wallowing in sadness and becoming sick, she finally decided that it’s best to give her to Soo-jin whom she sees as her true mother. The scene where Yoon Bok finally called her home group mother “mom” after she entrusted her to Soo-jin showed that she wasn’t ungrateful to her. It’s just that she just wanted to be sure, she’ll get reunited with her Soo-jin. Isn’t she clever?

I believe Mother was able to provide us the best ending there could be. Each minute of the last episode was spent wisely to give us the most satisfying resolution not only around Soo-jin and Yoon Bok’s story but as well as to those of the supporting characters. I was very happy to see Yi-jin (Jeon Hye-jin)’s character change: from being the selfish daughter to becoming the owner of a love house for kids without parents. Cha Young-shin (Lee Hye-young)’s legacy did live on.

If there is anyone coming by this tread wondering:

  • whether or not you want to watch this drama
  • if it will be too depressing to watch
  • if it's worth the time

I will say, prepare your heart and mind to watch one of the most moving, well written, best acted, best directed drama you will ever see. With each episode you feel as if the situation may be hopeless, but at the same time each episode leaves you hopeful.  Also, be ready to explore what the word "mother" means to you.

You are in for a treat if you decide to add this drama to your watch list. Yes, you will need a box of Kleenex, but it's not a devastating sadness, some of the scenes are just so touching, meaningful and real. I think that's why it touched me emotionally.

Enjoy!

One of the most touching and meaningful drama so far. I wept and wept. My husband asked if I was seriously crying about the drama ! It was so touching !

I would like to see more drama starring "Yoon Bok". She is so good !

I saw today that the Mother team is up for several awards in the 54th BaeksangArts Awards 2018:

. Mother was nominated for Best TV Drama

. LBY was nominated for Best Actress

. Heo Yool was nominated for Best New Actress

. Kim Chul Kyu was nominated for Best Director

I hope they all will win. They all deserve the recognition.

These nominations came earlier than I expected. I thought that usually awards shows take place at the end of the year?

unfortunately.. mother has not received any international media coverage  at the Canneseries festival

the rest of the shows from Europe have been highlighted ... this means mother has zero chances

it must be the very low profile of korean TV abroad and absence of support ..

anyway

Baeksang Awards are in the spring, legitimate recognition, aside from the station ones at end of year. :)

They are in great companies, I am pulling hard for Heo Yool but Won Jin-Ah was great as well in JBL.  Kim Nam-Joo likewise delivered solidly in Misty.  Lee Bo Young was wonderful in her role.  Secret Forest is the heavy favorite here.

Good luck to the Mother team.

korean awards are all driven by popularity  agenda and since this year is hosted by the channel jtbc

they are obviously pushing their drama misty and kim nam joo to win... everybody is saying that

of course mother and forest of secrets are the only worthy contenders here

Isn't Misty also Kim Nam Joo's comeback project after a very long hiatus? She may also get some extra votes due to that...

Don't get me wrong, she did a great job in Misty, and that drama is my second favorite drama for this year (of course you all know what my most favorite drama is :) ). However, I would rank LBY's performance in Mother a bit higher than KNJ's performance. I actually found Ji Jin Hee's performance the best one in Misty.

they did not get anything from Cannes ... like I expected the festival was all about politics and big budget

I seriously doubt that they  even watched the shows ...

the whole thing was a flop

I wonder if they got any buyers at least

Congrats to the Mother team!

The awards that it got (Best Drama and Best New Actress for HY) were totally deserved.

On a side note, LBY looked stunning walking on the red carpet with HY by her side...  :)

Sorry, but I feel a little cheated. I think Mother should have won every category it was nominated in--It should have also had best actor for the guy playing the abuser in this drama. The mother (actress) was also outstanding in her role. This drama had it all, including best director.

So I loved this show, but put it on hold because it was too heavy... I’ve finally picked up the courage to start watching this show again, and I’m crying a bucket a minute. Help!!

I just watched and finished this drama 2 weeks ago. I was very pleased to watch it. I didn't see the original japanese drama. But I think that this version is worth it. The cast, the plot and story are amazing. Special congratulations to Lee Bo Young and the little girl actress. Their chemistry is astonishing. Many times, I cried like a baby as if I were personally touched by this situation. I'm happy to learn that a lot of awards have been distributed to them. It's totally normal.
