Warner Bros. Sets Kim Jee-woon’s ‘Secret Agent’ as Debut Korean Production (EXCLUSIVE)

sdUfywV.jpg

BUSAN — Warner Bros. is to finance and distribute its first ever Korean-language movie, “Secret Agent.”

The 1930s period drama is to be directed by top Korean director Kim Jee-woon and star acting iconSong Kang-ho, who previously shared the lead in Kim’s kinetic kimchi Western “The Good, The Bad, The Weird.” Song is also familiar to U.S. audiences from “Snowpiercer.”

Warner becomes the second Hollywood studio to greenlight a Korean-language movie, following Fox Korea’s “Intimate Enemies” and “Slow Video” and its involvement in “The Yellow Sea.”

South Korea has one of the most vibrant film industries in the world. Thanks to high rates of cinema-going, it is the world’s sixth largest box office territory, with a cumulative gross last year of $1.52 billion, that puts it far ahead of much larger countries including Russia and Germany. In most years recently local films have accounted for most of the box office, prompting Hollywood studios to examine co-production or investment strategies in Korean-made titles.

“Secret Agent,” which is also known as “Mil-jeong,” has a $8.62 million (KRW 10 billion) budget. That is currently being fully financed by the studio, though Warner may look to bring on other local partners. Warner is a direct distributor in the country, and will handle the Korean theatrical release.

The project was planned and developed by Lee Jin-sook, CEO of local production house Harbin. It was pitched to Warner at script stage by Lee, who was seeking a production partner. Currently the project is structured as a co-venture between Warner and director Kim’s Grimm Pictures.

Set in Korea during the 20th century Japanese colonial era, the film will star Song and Gong Yoo (“The Suspect”). Production is set to begin in October, with locations including Korea and China.

Kim, who also directed ultra-violent drama “I Saw the Devil,” and classic horror “A Tale of Two Sisters,” is considered one of the top three directors from Korea, and has been actively courted by Hollywood studios. His Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring English-language debut “The Last Stand” was produced by Di Bonaventura Pictures. Kim is also attached as director to the project “Coward” for Electric City Entertainment, and as screenwriter on the New Regency Pictures remake of his “A Bittersweet Life.”

Gong Yoo, Song Kang-ho headline occupation-era thriller

May 12, 2015

songkangho_10.jpg

Director Kim Ji-woon (I Saw the Devil, The Good, the Bad, the Weird) is back with a new action movie, a period piece set during the Japanese occupation called Secret Agent. It’s no surprise that he went straight to Song Kang-ho (The Attorney) to reunite for what will be their fourth collaboration since 1998’s Quiet Family. Song has signed on to star, and now Gong Yoo (The Suspect) is in contract negotiations to join them.

The film is being co-produced by withUs Film (The Attorney) and Warner Brothers, and tells the story of a group of heroic independence fighters who form a secret agency during the Japanese occupation. Director Kim Ji-woon is penning the script, and I should’ve expected a twist, coming from him: It’s about an independence fighter and a Japanese spy becoming friends. So… like occupation-era JSA?

It looks like it’ll be a long (looooong) while before Gong Yoo makes his way back to dramaland; he’s got his zombie movie Busan Line and the sweeping melodrama A Man and a Woman with Jeon Do-yeon up first, then if he signs on to this one that’ll be the year. I want to say, “Come baaaack,” but really, who’s going to say no to Kim Ji-woon and Song Kang-ho? Nobody with a brain.

Secret Agent is planning to start shoots later this year.

Warner Bros. Finances Korean Movie With Stars Song Kang Ho And Gong Yoo

Aug 11, 2015

song-kang-ho-and-gong-yoo.jpg?w=600

According to the entertainment industry publication, Variety, the Hollywood studio Warner Bros. is about to finance and distribute its first Korean language film. The film "Secret Agent" is set in the 1930s during the time when Japan controlled Korea. It focuses on resistance fighters known as the Heroic Corps, a group that uses violent means to achieve Korean independence.

The film stars Korean actors Song Kang Ho and Gong Yoo. Song, who achieved international fame with "Snowpiercer," also starred in the films "The Face Reader," "The Attorney" and "The Throne." Gong Yoo is known for both his work in dramas such as "Coffee Prince" and films such as "Silenced" and "The Suspect."

"Secret Agent" will be the fourth film in which director Kim Jee Won and actor Song Kang Ho collaborate. They worked together on "The Quiet Family," "The Foul King" and "The Good, The Bad, The Weird."

Director Kim Jee Won previously directed the films "I Saw The Devil" and the horror film "A Tale of Two Sisters." He also directed an English language film "The Last Stand."

With this production, Warner Bros. became the second Hollywood studio to finance a Korean language film. Fox previously financed "Intimate Enemies" and "Slow Video."

Variety described the Korean film industry as one of the most "vibrant" in the world and said that the nation had the world's sixth biggest box office territory, putting it ahead of Russia and Germany. Warner Bros will not only finance and distribute the film but also handle the Korean theatrical release.

Production begins in October, with filming locations in both Korea and China.

Financing and distributing the film in the U.S., means that Warner Bros can make a final call on how the film is shown there. That can potentially result in two versions of the films, one for Korea and another for North America. Before the Weinstein Company distributed Bong Joon Ho's dystopian film "Snowpiercer" in North America, they insisted on some changes. The film in its original version had already earned critical praise. However, 20 minutes of footage was cut from the U.S. release, making it more of an action movie.

The goal, according to the Weinstein Company, was to make sure the film was "understood by audiences in Iowa and Oklahoma." Introductory and closing voiceovers were added.

Whether "Secret Agent" will have both a Korean and North American version is not yet known.

Han Ji-min to star in "Secret Agent" as female fighter for independence

photo630982.jpg

Will Han Ji-min be able to continue the 'Jeon Ji-hyeon effect'? Han Ji-min is starring in the movie "Secret Agent", which is a story about independence fighters during the Japanese Invasion. Han Ji-min plays Yeon Gye-soon, a female independence fighter. Han Ji-min's role in "Secret Agent" is much like Jeon Ji-hyeon's role in "The Assassination". Not only does the story portray the lives of female independence fighters who never got enough light, it shows that their spirit was as strong as any other man. Thanks to Jeon Ji-hyeon's performance in the movie "The Assassination", surviving female independence fighters are being re-highlighted. This 'hype' will follow on to Han Ji-min. Song Kang-ho and Gong Yoo have already been cast for this movie but it took some time to find the right actress for Yeon Gye-soon. It wasn't easy finding someone to play a female independence fighter who developed their own life in a rough world and be in romance with Gong Yoo as well. Several top actresses have been mentioned before but the opportunity went to Han Ji-min as she was perfect for someone who has to be many images. "Secret Agent" is going to cost about 10 billion won. There's the fact that it's going to be based on the time of the Japanese Invasion as well as several explosive scenes and location filming in China too. It's also the first movie being produced with Warner Brothers from Hollywood after its declaration of getting involved with the Korean market.

Han Ji-min, Shin Sung-rok join occupation-era blockbuster

nZs8qCj.jpg

Casting is back in full swing for Secret Agent, the latest action movie from director Kim Ji-woon (I Saw the Devil, The Good, the Bad, the Weird), starring Song Kang-ho (The Attorney) and Gong Yoo (The Suspect). Hm, I’m still excited about this lineup, but now I wonder how this 1930s occupation-era blockbuster will differentiate itself fromAssassination, which was a huge hit this year.

The latest additions to the cast are Han Ji-min (Hyde, Jekyll, Me) and Shin Sung-rok(King’s Face). Han Ji-min has been cast as Gong Yoo’s love interest, an independence fighter who moves to and from Shanghai, Dandong, and Kyungsang, who will share a heartrending loveline with the hero. Han Ji-min played an independence fighter in Capital Scandal, so it should be familiar territory for her.

We’re not told much about Shin Sung-rok’s character, other than the fact that he’ll play a lead. I’m guessing a villain, though by now I think it’s way more interesting to go against expectation with him. Besides, how do you top psychopath megalomaniac gamemaster, really?

The film is about heroic independence fighters who band together and form a secret agency during the Japanese occupation. And it features an unlikely alliance, between an independence fighter and a Japanese spy. I still think it sounds like occupation-era JSA, but who knows what tone it’ll take on.

The 10-billion-won project is being co-produced by withUs Film and Warner Brothers, and plans to start shooting in October for a release next year.

'Secret Agent' Attracts Gong Yoo, Song Kang Ho, Shin Sung Rok And Han Ji Min

BY Julie Jones | Sep 08, 2015

'Secret Agent' Attracts Gong Yoo, Song Kang Ho, Shin Sung Rok And Han Ji Min

It has been a good year for films about the Japanese occupation of Korea. Teh box office hit "Assassination" starred Jun Ji Hyun, Lee Jung Jae and Ha Jung Woo as key figures in the independence movement. By the end of August the film earned $77 million making it the highest-grossing Korean film of 2015.

Next year might be an equally good year for "Secret Agent," a film about a similar subject that has signed Song Kang Ho, Gong Yoo and Han Ji Min. Shin Sung Rok is currently considering a role.

The film will tell the story of The Organization of Righteous Bravery, one of the Korean independence movements. It is the first Korean language film ever co-financed by the American film company Warner Brothers.

Here"s some background on the Korean independence movement. A succession of treaties tried to incorporate Korea into Japanese rule, first as a protectorate and then by annexing Korea in 1910. That ended the Joseon dynasty. The film "Secret Agent" is set in the 1930s. At that time protests against Japanese rule had led to the strengthening of military rule and suppression of the press and free expression. "Secret Agent" takes place during this period. Japanese rule ended in 1945 at the end of World War II.

K-drama star Gong Yoo will appear in the film but it is not yet known whether he will play an independence fighter. He is best known for his roles in "Coffee Prince" and in the films "Silenced" and "The Suspect."

His co-star, veteran Korean actor Song Kang Ho is familiar to American film audiences due to his appearance in Bong Joon Ho"s 2013 film "Snowpiercer." After that film he appeared in "The Throne," "The Attorney" and "The Face Reader." It is the fourth time that Song appears in a film by Kim Jee Woon,  director of "I Saw The Devil" and "The Good, The Bad and The Weird."

Shin Sung Rok appeared in the dramas "The King"s Face," "Trot Lovers," "The Liar Game" and "You Who Came From The Stars." He has not yet confirmed his participation in the film.

His agency HB Entertainment, told the Korean media outlet OSEN that he is reviewing the story positively.

Han Ji Min was last seen in the dramas "Padam Padam," "Rooftop Prince," "Hyde, Jekyll and Me" and the films "Salut D"Amour" and "The Fatal Encounter."

The movie is scheduled to begin filming in October.
