Lee Byung Hun 이병헌 Byunghun Lee

Recommended Posts

Another one from Gallup Korea, Lee Byung Hun at Number 3.. not bad, not bad at all. Well done, JoHa! KEYS TO THE HEART was rather quiet and low-profile but the movie received a lot of positive public feedback as well as critical responses. It had also broke even and reached 3.4 million audience admission (considering it's a family comedy-drama) when a lot of highly-anticipated Korean movies released at the same time (beginning of 2018 was somewhat slow & lukewarm) could not move past 500K admission.

So, now we will have the top 3 actors in one movie coming out in 2019. MOUNT BAEKDU Fighting!

Movie Stars That Lit Up The Screen In 2018 According to Gallup Korea Poll

Ever since 2007, Gallup Korea has held polls to decide the entertainers/movie stars/TV stars/pop stars/sports stars of the year.

To kick off the end of 2018, Gallup Korea has revealed the results for their poll on “movie stars that lit up the screen in 2018.” The poll was conducted from November 7 to 30 and included 1,700 men and women over the age of 13 all over the country.

Ma Dong Seok took first place in the poll with his role in this year’s hit film “Along with the Gods 2.” The contrast between his tough-looking exterior and his soft personality has also earned him the nickname “Ma-vely” (Ma + “lovely”). The actor is also well-known for his never-ending body of work, many of which go on to become hits at the box office: “Veteran” (2015), “Along with the Gods” (2017), and “Train to Busan.” In 2018 alone, on top of “Along with the Gods 2,” he appeared in “Champion,” “The Soulmate,” “The Villagers,” and “Unstoppable.”

In second place was Ha Jung Woo, who also starred in both “Along with the Gods” movies. He is another heavy-hitter at the box office, with films like “The Handmaiden,” “Tunnel,” and “Assassination” under his belt, and has appeared in the Top 5 of Gallup Korea’s “Movie Stars of the Year” poll every year since 2012.

Third place was Lee Byung Hun, a global star who kicked off 2018 with the film “Keys to the Heart.” Although he gained acclaim this particular year for his first drama role in years with tvN’s “Mr. Sunshine,” he is still mostly known as a movie actor rather than a TV actor, even appearing in Hollywood productions like “Misconduct” and “The Magnificent Seven.” In 2009 and 2012, he had risen as high as No. 1 on Gallup Korea’s “Movie Stars of the Year” poll.

Spoiler

Rounding out the top 5 were Song Kang Ho and Joo Ji Hoon. Song Kang Ho has not yet released a film in 2018, with his latest movie “Drug King” awaiting a December 19 release, but is still riding high on his impressive career to date, not least with 2017’s box office hit “Taxi Driver.” “Taxi Driver” catapulted him to the top of the poll in 2017, a feat that he previously accomplished in 2008 and 2013.

Joo Ji Hoon also starred in the “Along with the Gods” series, but this has been a landmark year overall in the young actor’s career. 2018 saw the release of two other movies in which he has starred, after “Along with the Gods 2”: “The Spy Gone North” and “The Dark Figure of Crime.”

Like 2016 and 2017, the top 5 movie actors chosen in 2018’s poll were dominated by male actors. The last time a female actress appeared in the top 5 was in 2016 (Jun Ji Hyun). The highest that a female actress has ever placed on the poll was in 2012 (Kim Hye Soo was third). Despite 2018 being a landmark year for female-led films in South Korea, the highest an actress placed on 2018’s poll was No. 14 (Kim Hye Soo, tied with another actor), No. 16 (Son Ye Jin, tied with another actor), and No. 19 (Han Ji Min).

Here are the top 10 movie stars of 2018, as picked through Gallup Korea’s survey:

1. Ma Dong Seok
2. Ha Jung Woo
3. Lee Byung Hun
4. Song Kang Ho
5. Joo Ji Hoon
6. Yoo Hae Jin
7. Jung Woo Sung
8. Hwang Jung Min
9. Jo In Sung
10. Cha Tae Hyun

I totally agree  with you,  @rubie,  that the Kdrama audience is very different than that movies audience - in that many drama followers watch very few films, if any.  Before Mr. Sunshine,  many of these people could only relate to him as Lee Min-Jung's husband...  Pretty shocking to me too.

After Mr. Sunshine his name is golden and all those drama viewers who had no idea what he was like before, are wanting so much to see more material with him....
I think it was a very smart move on his part to take the role of Mr. Sunshine - and of course - with such a wonderful script and fabulous cast in addition to him.

It is the end of the year, and I look forward to see him win more awards.!

Hi @irilight, good to see you back at the thread and thanks very much for the wonderful highlight. It's always the year-end heartwarming sharing when the Gallup Korea survey updates were released. Lee Byung Hun will usually be in the top ten movie list but this year, it's extra special because he's in the drama list as well and not just that, at number 1 as the sweet icing on the cake!

A lot of international Kdrama fans these days are likely more into dramas and especially Kpop compared to movies. LBH probably wasn't well-known despite him being in IRIS but that was of course, 9 years ago. LMJ on the other hand had appeared in more dramas since then. But indeed, BH's name is golden now, MR.SUNSHINE proved to be a thoroughly good project (commercially and critically) that he accepted as his comeback to the small screen. Though my first time hearing it that BH was just known as LMJ's husband to some drama fans (just as MJ was known as LBH's wife to some film fans).. and both actors have gone through some personal situation previously but now, they are back at the top of their careers and still going strong.

Anyway, thanks to the koala news highlight. Although I do read her (related) articles from time to time, the comments at the blog have gone from bad to terrible to the worst of its kind. It's just becoming very demeaning for the writer as well as the commentators. But it's apparently a tactic to incite fan-wars and create hits considering the Advert$ that adorned the personal blog site, most of the time blocking the content. Each time some readers will definitely get hurt and angry reading the comments th_3vmad.gifbut as the saying goes.. one man's meat is another man's poison.

LBH will keep walking the flower road. Next year will be as massive as 2018,  two upcoming domestic movies of big production scale, and possible excursion back to hollywood given his recent visit to LA and UTA agency that lasted for 2 weeks?

Sensing that LBH & BH Entertainment have a lot of good news/projects lined up for 2019 but will only reveal them when the timing is right.

Everyone, please check out MR.SUNSHINE drama thread for ongoing Blu-ray info, polls & survey as well as concert updates. While the thread is usually very slow but every now and then.. there will be precious tidbits by fans.

Throwback time ~ nice EuShin photos alongside the cool Gallup article.

Lee Min Jung’s Son Sends Lovely Gift To Support His Mom’s Drama “Fates And Furies”

Source: Soompi by sala12

Lee Min Jung shared a present she received from her son on Instagram!

Along with a picture of a banner from her son, she posted, “You write so well, son. I’m thankful for the warm food truck from my family. However, this week’s broadcast is canceled due to Vietnam’s soccer game… Although it’s a shame, let’s meet ‘Fates and Furies‘ next week, and this week, coach Park Hang Seo, fighting!”

In the picture, the banner reads, “SBS Drama ‘Fates and Furies’ director and staff! Please have strength despite the cold, and please take good care of my mother! From Joon Hoo.”

Lee Min Jung’s husband Lee Byung Hun also sent a food truck to the filming set on December 11. Not only did he send the food truck, but it was reported that Lee Byung Hun also visited the set to support Lee Min Jung.

Currently, Lee Min Jung is playing the role of Goo Hae Ra, a woman who approaches Tae In Joon (played by Joo Sang Wook) with ulterior motives, only to fall in love with him.

Lee Byung Hun Thanks “Mr. Sunshine” Co-Star Byun Yo Han For Supporting New Film With Coffee Truck

Source: Soompi by S. Park

The “Mr. Sunshine” bromance continues! cuppa.gif

On December 14, Lee Byung Hun shared photos of a coffee truck sent to him by “Mr. Sunshine” co-star Byun Yo Han. The thoughtful gift was sent to the set of Lee Byung Hun’s latest film “Managers of Namsan” (literal title).

He wrote, “Custom figure mania Byun Yo Han. Are you finally buying coffee?”

On the coffee truck, the banners read, “Good luck ‘Managers of Namsan’!!! From Byun Yo Han.” The banners also have photos of figurines that resemble Lee Byung Hun.

The two actors previously appeared on tvN’s “Mr. Sunshine” together where they appeared as the characters Eugene Choi and Kim Hee Sung.

cuppa.gif On the other hand, BFFs Yoo Yeon Seok (Dong Mae) and Son Ho Jun are starting their new tvN variety show in January 2019. Their first guest will be Choi Ji Woo. It's a bit of a longshot (considering LBH's schedule) but hopefully.. who knows, he might be invited and able to guest in one of the episodes. BH himself is a coffee lover and he has never been in any recent variety/reality show. This is on tvN and hosted by his Mr.Sunshine co-star. Let's hope so.

Didn't realize they existed! bricks.gifFound the full English-subbed videos of SBS' My Little Old Boy Variety Show ~ Mom's Diary: My Ugly Duckling that Lee Min Jung guested on recently. She appeared in two episodes (114 &115) that were aired on two consecutive Sundays on SBS.

Frankly, I have never seen the variety show before, not even once, not even a glimpse.. mostly watching the grandpas on tvN and how to eat 3 meals a day.  So, it's a rather interesting show although it's not all talk Q&As with MJ, just parts  featuring her in between other segments. (My Ugly Duckling info on wikipedia)

So, it's really nice not to miss the show and see Mrs.Sunshine (the show dubbed MJ as that), she was indeed very bright and cheerful guest to have. A lovely actress who dotes on her son so much, and talks about her hubby lovingly. It's really heartwarming seeing a casual and happy feeling between the hosts, the celebrity Ommas and MJ interacting. The mothers are really fond of MJ after the show (her cheerful & positive personality totally won them over) and they absolutely wanted BH to join the show, too. Hope Fate & Fury will reach 15% rating and we'll see Mr.Sunshine on Mom's Diary. th_pwettybunny.gif

Spoiler

There's a little segment feat. actors Lee Sung Min (LBH's co-star in upcoming Chiefs of Namsan) and Bae Jung Nam & David Lee McInnis (both from Mr.Sunshine). They were all filming the movie 'Mr.Zoo.' Anyway, I thought David could speak Korean (his mom is Korean) and have seen him giving greetings in Korean before. Not sure if it's all scripted for the show but he looks like he's not very well versed in Korean.

We can watch the video on streaming or download from these links:

7 Actors Who Received Spotlight For Their Acting In 2018

Source: Soompi by S. Park

Many dramas and films premiered in 2018. There were some actors who caused buzz just for their appearance and some who received praise for making their projects a success.

Here are seven actors who drew viewers to small and big screens throughout this year:

Lee-Byung-Hun.jpg

1. Lee Byung Hun

Lee Byung Hun made headlines when it was revealed that he would be appearing as the lead of tvN’s “Mr. Sunshine.” This marked his return to TV screens after nine years since SBS’s “IRIS.”

“Mr. Sunshine” was praised for its strong script, detailed directing, and immersive acting. According to Nielsen Korea, its final episode recorded average viewership ratings of 18.1 percent and 20 percent. It became the third most-watched drama on this network following “Goblin” and “Reply 1988.”

Much of the success of the drama is credited to lead Lee Byung Hun’s realistic acting that moved both the Joseon Dynasty and female lead Go Ae Shin (played by Kim Tae Ri).

As a result, Lee Byung Hun received the Daesang at the 2018 Asia Artist Awards.

2. Ha Jung Woo

3. So Ji Sub

4. Son Ye Jin

5. Park Seo Joon

6. IU

7. EXO’s D.O.

Thanks so much @mistymorning for the photo highlight and translation. Looks like we're back in Eugene mode..  JWJ sent the coffee truck quite awhile back, good thing BH didn't forget to share about it.. taking us back to MR.SUNSHINE, obviously.

And to top that, BH just posted a clip from the Melon Music Awards.. like, 2 weeks or a week back? He was the last to present the Best Artist of the Year award and watch he did while waiting for his turn.th_lmfao.gif JoonHoo's Appa is never one to just sit still. :P This is probably to celebrate his 80K+ followers on IG and that the Premium Blu-ray pre-order for MR.SUNSHINE finally sold out at 500 copies th_celebrate008.gif well done to the coordinator, our ES and everyone helping to promote it.

And then, he walked out on stage.. as if nothing happened..

Thanks to hhminee for these clips comparison ~

Doesn't appear like there's any specific event (for the celebrity guests, and friends) for the new movie. Not on Monday, yesterday or today. Somehow, it doesn't feel like how it used to be. The Korean fans were looking for pics of BH attending it but found nothing. th_dontknow.gif

Anyway.. reading the latest  update on the Snake Eyes movie spin-off.. it's unsure if BH would even appear in it. Seems that they would feature Snake Eyes from his younger self.. till he became one of the Joes. Although it's a surprise that the production won't cast Ray Park (the original actor playing Snake Eyes) it's understandable as he was never shown without the mask.. not sure if they'll bring back BH as well, as the movie supposedly will feature younger cast-lineup. Unless Ray Park would appear later, as in the GI Joe original live-action, then we'll see Storm Shadow by LBH. But for now.. lets not hope too much for anything.. after Terminator Genisys, we can't trust Paramount this time. th_scared.gif

BH signed up for the 3 GI Joe movies but not the spin-off.. so, anything is possible and vice-versa.
