[KBS World] Parental love is the unconditional, the eternal, and one of the most tremendous things in the world.

‘My Dad Loves Trouble’ is a drama like a popular song. It is a drama with laughter and tear, just like the lyrics of popular songs that touch our hearts. This drama has its background from the Korean War period to the 60’s, when people were going through the most difficult time. It brings us the reminiscence of the old days and makes us to look back at oneself and family.

[KBS World] There have been numerous scenarios reflecting sacrificing life-styles of mothers, in comparison to fathers'. Let's talk about our fathers' stories of current time; a father who endures many hardships and servilities for his family's continuous of well-being, a father who sacrifices his time and efforts to make the most earnings for his children to have a chance of receiving better education, a father who's not recognized and being isolated in his family regardless of all his struggles in his lonely battlefield of work, a father who choose the family's betterment instead of his own by meeting the need of the family members instead of his...

Despite the efforts, our lonely father is losing his status and presence in the family and is neglected by his people of family. Sometimes we forget the unseen fact of our lives; at our starting point, and in our every journey, he's been always there for us to encourage and to motivate our beginning.

He's got the world's greatest name, 'Father'.

[KBS World] The stereotypical view of womanhood on screen is changing.

Different from the past which used to show the passive and modest nature of female, recent dramas illustrate women with grand authority and active spirit. However, most of the historical dramas are still presenting the submissive images of female; woman as a subordinate who gives birth to children to carry on the family lineage, or a political tactician who takes part in conspiracies and causes internal wars in the palace.

Now we are talking about the empress who is incompatible from the previously known images of female in history. ‘The Iron Empress’ is the granddaughter of Wang Gun, the first emperor of Goryeo. She has inherited her grandfather´s vision as well as his Great Spirit. The empress fights against the enemies trying to collapse Goryeo, and called as ‘The Iron Empress’ who gets rid of her brother, son, and even her lover, for the good of the empire. During the Goryeo period, women had the firm statue and their power was high as that of men. Introducing the legendary heroine, ‘The Iron Empress’ would bring hopes and dreams to the women living in this era.

Reporters get the spotlight

MBC's upcoming drama "Spotlight," which airs this Wednesday night, promises to bring back a bit of excitement to the small screen.

Following on the heels of its more-than-lackluster predecessor "Who Are You?", "Spotlight" focuses on the gritty and enterprising lives of city desk broadcast news reporters. The drama tracks one woman's rise to fame, from her struggles at the city desk to her eventual success as an anchorwoman.

With a plot like that, the success of "Spotlight" rides on the strength of its heroine and on its scripting.

And the script promises to be solid. The drama's writer Lee Ki-won possesses a finesse for drawing out the dark political power struggles that go on in the workplace. And his intense and cutthroat writing will play out well in the newsroom. Lee also wrote last year's hit medical drama "White Tower."

"I focused on the inner struggles that reporters face as humans," Lee said at a press conference held last week. "While there is romance, more importantly, this is about trust."

200805120005.gif

▲Ji Jin-hee and Son Ye-jin (right) play news reporters in "Spotlight."[MBC]

But judging from the preview and from what big-time celebrity Son Ye-jin, 26, had to say at the press conference, "Spotlight's" heroine might have trouble getting her feet off the ground.

Set to play the title role, Son, who deftly played a calculating yet endearing seductress in the hit flick "The Art of Seduction" (2005), more than disappointed with her lack of comical timing and poor delivery in the preview.

Rather than playing up the stereotype of the merciless and bold news reporter, Son's reporter was clueless and clumsy. Hardly convincing as a newswoman with three years of experience under her belt, Son will need to beef up her role in the episodes to come.

"The director and scriptwriter met with anchors, announcers and reporters," said Son at the press conference. "I did not meet them directly."

But if Son does not want to get pushed into the shadows by her costars - actors Ji Jin-hee and Jin Goo - she might want to consider stepping it up and meeting up with some reporters to get a feel for what the job is really like.

On the flipside, actor Jin Goo, 27, who proved his acting mettle in the gangster flick "A Dirty Carnival" (2006), showed that he had done the research and training needed to play the minor but interesting role of a cub reporter.

"To prepare for my role, I followed a real cub reporter around," Jin said. "The first thing I realized is that this is a dirty job."

By dirty, he meant literally dirty, and made sure to keep his hair looking messy and unkempt for the role.

Jin might just outshine his more prominent costars, giving Ji Jin-hee a run for his money. Ji Jin-hee, 36, who hit it big when he starred opposite Lee Young-ae in "Jewel in the Palace" (2003), is returning to the small screen after a three-year hiatus.

Playing the stern and supremely talented lead reporter for the city news desk, Ji prepped for his role by hanging out with reporters over dinner.

"I met with city desk reporters over dinner," Ji said. "They were very hierarchical, even more top-down than an army."

With a little insight into the social life of a reporter, it looks like Ji might have a respectable handle on his role as the heroine's mentor. Add that to the strong subject matter, and MBC may just have a winning formula.

But this formula isn't new.

Japan focused on broadcast news in the miniseries "Top Caster," which aired on Fuji TV in 2006. And Hollywood won audiences over with the hit newsroom flick "Up Close and Personal" (1996). MBC even did it before with their drama "All About Eve" in 2000.

To be successful, the show will have to distinguish itself from what has been done before. And "Spotlight" producer Kim Do-hoon is well aware of that.

"'Spotlight' focuses on the important but often unnoticed city desk broadcast news reporters," producer Kim said at the press conference.

And turning the spotlight on the rough-and-tough city desk might be what it takes to breathe new life into an old plotline.

Viewers will have to tune in Wednesday night to see if "Spotlight" breaks the mold.

"Spotlight" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays on MBC at 9:55 p.m.

'Spotlight' Shows the Lives of Reporters

By Han Sang-hee

Staff Reporter

080513_p14_spotlight.jpg

Actors Son Ye-jin, left, and Ji Jin-hee will appear as city desk reporters in the new drama "Spotlight'' tonight on MBC.

With MBC's new drama "Spotlight,'' viewers will get a glimpse into the lives of broadcast news reporters covering the city beat.

"Spotlight'' depicts the journey toward success of a passionate city desk reporter Seo Woo-jin, played by top actress Son Ye-jin. Ji Jin-hee from the hit drama "Jewel in the Palace'' will star as her strict, yet caring mentor, Oh Tae-seok. The drama will follow Seo's drudge through the grind to eventually become an anchorwoman.

At the press conference held last week in southern Seoul, reporters and camera crews swarmed the room for a shot of Son.

"Spotlight'' is the first drama in two years for Son, 26, who has starred in movies like "The Classic'' (2003) and "The Art of Seduction'' (2005).

"I read the synopsis and had a strong impression. I especially liked the fact that (Seo) continues to strive to achieve her dreams. I was captivated by her passion and energy,'' Son said.

A short clip of the drama drew laughter among reporters when Ji said "You call yourself a reporter?'' hinting that the crew meant it when they said they were aiming for a "real'' reporter drama.

"We tried to break away from the cliche love scenes this time. We focused more on their stress as human beings and reporters, not just their affections toward each other,'' said Lee Kee-won, the writer of the drama. Lee tasted success last year with his strong presentation of the political world of doctors through the medical drama, "Behind the White Tower (2007).''

Producer Kim Do-hoon explained that reality was of foremost importance in "Spotlight.'' "We'll be showing episodes that might really happen in real life. I think this is hard because we never had a drama like this before. Being the first is always difficult because there isn't much to compare with.''

The actors also mentioned their share of reality, as many of them actually spent their days and nights with real reporters.

"I followed a reporter for a day. At first, I didn't believe it when they told me they didn't have time to bathe. But I realized they really didn't have the time to even wash their face,'' said Jin Gu who plays fellow reporter Lee Soon-cheol.

As top celebrities, actors bump into reporters frequently, whether they enjoy it or not. When asked if their opinions toward them changed, Ji Jin-hee admitted that it was all about the choice of words.

"I realized the importance of my words. The right words can turn you into a hero but using the wrong words will have you fall. I told myself to be careful from now on,'' he laughed.

"I started to understand their struggle to capture the truth for the public. Now I feel very pressured,'' Son added.

This is the first time for a television program to solely delve deep into the lives of broadcast news reporters, although there were some dramas and movies that briefly introduced the profession. In order to bring reality to the small screen, some scenes were shot at the real MBC News Desk set in Yeouido, Seoul, while MBC city desk news reporters will be adding reality by appearing as well.

"We'll introduce the dilemmas reporters face as people with feelings and also as people who have to dig out the truth. There is a symbiotic relationship between the two,'' Son said.

"Spotlight'' will be aired tonight 9:55 on MBC.

'Women in the Sun' heats up summer

With summer on the horizon, Wednesday and Thursday nights are heating up -- with three brand new dramas playing at the same time, viewers will have a hard time choosing what to watch.

Will viewers opt for the gritty news drama "Spotlight," the high-flying action-packed series "Iljimae" or for KBS' latest, "Women in the Sun"?

Set to start tonight, "Women in the Sun" promises to stir things up by catering to fans of the classic melodrama. As the title suggest, women take the lead, which differentiates itself from its competition by tackling a completely different genre: the soap opera.

Nothing like a juicy soap opera to bring a little excitement to the small screen, and with veteran film actress Kim Ji-su in the driver's seat, viewers can expect to get the full-blown treatment.

Co-star Jung Gyu-woon, 25, summed it up at a press conference last week when he said, "This drama is about the fateful meeting of two sisters. It is about revenge and love."

Returning to the TV screen after starring in a number of films, Kim Ji-su tackles the hefty role of Shin Do-young, a high profile announcer. Shin has it all, the career, the man and the looks, but she also harbors a deep, dark secret.

An adopted child and fearful of losing the sole affections of her parents, Shin abandoned her five-year old sister -- the biological daughter of Shin's parents -- at a train station when she was 13 years old. And now many years later, just when she thinks she has everything she wants, her past returns to haunt her in the form of her sister, played by "Le Grand Chef" actress Lee Ha-na.

"She didn't deliberately abandon her sister," Kim, 35, defends her character at the press conference. "She went back for her ... She is a very insecure woman."

Riddled with complexities, Shin promises to be a fascinating villainess. And if anyone can pull this role off, it is Kim, who has proved her acting prowess in dramatic films like "Romance" (2006).

The same can't be said for co-star Lee Ha-na. Actress Lee -- who starred as a slapdash reporter in the hit flick "Le Grand Chef" (2007) -- plans on showing audiences that she too can play a dark character.

"This child grew up hard, but is very optimistic," said Lee, 25, at the press conference.

But not for long, when Lee's character, Yoon, uncovers the truth, she goes all out for revenge. And Yoon wants everything, including her sister's man -- played by actor Han Jae-suk.

Who will win? Viewers will have to tune in tonight to watch Lee and Kim battle it out.

Actors Han Jae-suk, 34, star of SBS' "The Lobbyist" (2007), and Jung Gyu-woon, 25, who is also starring in MBC's "Bittersweet Life" (2008) play the sisters' love interests.

"Women in the Sun" airs tonight at 9:55 p.m. on KBS 2 TV.

Tears Of Mokpo <목포의 눈물> will be aired on oct'08 as a 24eps drama instead of 2009.

Daemool <대물> will most likely be canceled due to conflicts with the pd, production company and legal issues.

News from DC can only be trusted 50% the most as same as the official news sites because of the constant changes of the production companies, artists, time and stations.

Iljimae vs. Iljimae: Fight of 'Ki'

"Lee Joon-ki vs Lee Seung-gi, the viewers choose…'

In 2008, two 'Iljimae's will find the home theater.

The SBS historical drama "Iljimae", starring Lee Joon-ki, will air from the 21st after "On Air". In response, MBC is airing drama "Iljimae", starring Lee Seung-gi, at the end of the year. It is unconventional for two dramas with the same title to air on public television in the same year. Thus, it is inevitable that we compare 'Joon-ki's Iljimae' and 'Seung-gi's Iljimae'.

Lee Joon-ki's "Iljimae"

200805120198.jpg

Green Snake Media, the production company of SBS "Iljimae", gave up purchasing the copyright of Ko Woo-yeong's comic due to production costs, and are using an original story based on the story of a chivalrous robber. The setting is the Chosun era, and Iljimae is faced with breaking the rules of social status and the pursuit of reform.

Actor Lee Joon-ki, who rose to stardom with "The King and the Clown", is the main character, and he is to show historical acting and action skills that he has perfected. A representation of the production company said, "Different from Ko Woo-yeong's Iljimae that has his stage in Southeast Asia, SBS Iljimae will have his stage within Korea, which will express the Korean sentiment in a better way".

In response to what genre it is, he said, "There is a satire of today's society, but it's not a fusion historical drama as "Hong Gil Dong". It is a drama of chivalry that is seasoned with comedy".

The plan to show Lee Joon-ki, like Lupin, MacGyver, or Zorro, who appears at any time and vanishes mysteriously, is drawing much interest.

In addition to Lee Joon-ki, they have a great cast of Han Hyo-joo, Park Si-hoo, Lee Yeong-ah, Kim Chang-wan, Lee Moon-sik, Jo Min-ki, Kim Seong-ryeong, Son Tae-yeong, Lee Won-jong, Ahn Kil-kang, and Kim Roi-ha.

Lee Seung-gi's "Iljimae"

20080511-24.jpg

MBC is remaking Ko Woo-yeong's famous comic "Iljimae". Lee Seung-gi, who is the main character, will show the original with sadness, humor, and satire. Although Lee Seung-gi has less acting experience than Lee Joon-ki, Lee Seung-gi is currently very popular, so the battle for ratings is still unknown.

If Lee Joon-ki's 'Iljimae' starts with the personal desire to avenge his family's death, Lee Seung-gi's 'Iljimae' shows decisive opposition for social discrimination and exploitation. As the original comic mixes fantasy, Lee Seung-gi acts as the hero that everyone wants more than staying faithful to a historical background.

Iljimae, who comes back from studying abroad, realizes the true situation of exploited Chosun, and becomes a chivalrous robber to help the people, and the producers will insert many episodes from the original.

The producing company, Jipi Workshop, of MBC "Iljimae" started producing after receiving the copyright after battling for it against Green Snake Media last February. They began filming in March, and the staff is looking around the whole nation to find a traditional house, a river, a cave, and mountains to set the stage for the drama.

Presently, MBC plans for 24 episodes of 70 minutes each, and they are targeting to air by the end of the year. The reason why they are focusing on organization more than ever is because it is rare for two broadcasting companies to have two dramas with the same name and similar stories in the same year.

Jipi Workshop is remaining faithful to the script and even requested certification of the storyline from Green Snake Media to protect the original work.

A unique Korean cartoonist who inspired a generation of artists

May 31, 2008

30230224.jpg

A character named "Im Keok-jeong". [JoongAng Ilbo]

In 2002, the late cartoonist Ko Woo-yung was diagnosed with colon cancer. Just before he was put under in the operating room, he rose from his bed and looked around. The nurse sternly reprimanded him, saying he shouldn't be moving.

I have to study the room before I forget, so I can use it in my cartoons, he said.

He died three years ago after a very active life. He was a fisherman, golfer, traveler, scuba diver, baseball player and even an amateur boxer. He authored cartoons like Iljime and Samgukji.

A retrospective on his work, Ko Woo-yung's Cartoons: Never Ending Story, will be held in July at Arko Museum. It is the nation's most notable comic art exhibition.

The retrospective offers Korean cartoonists a chance to promote their art and re-evaluate Korean cartoons, which have long been seen as low-brow entertainment.

The show will take an in-depth look at the historical context of Ko's heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly the ways in which many young artists today reinterpret his work, says Kim Hyeong-mi, the curator at Arko. His work will be displayed on a large scale using the museum's versatile space.

Ko's sketchbooks reveal his eagerness to incorporate his experiences into his work. His work is accompanied by vivid phrases, such as a sea that mimics the sesame oils of the North Pole, scuba diving 15 meters below the sea in Cebu Island, the taste of meat from a dead fighting bull and edelweiss under the moonlight in Zurich.

His strong imagery and dramatic storytelling attracted a wide readership here, and several of his works were turned into TV dramas and films.

Iljime, a well-known story about a chivalrous robber set during the Joseon Dynasty, was recently made into a TV drama about a man disguised as a woman starring Lee Jun-ki from The King and the Clown.

Ko Woo-yung's cartoon "Iljime"

Ko's career highlight was the release of comic strips that reinterpreted major classics. He boldly dramatized characters from the novels and chronicled Asian history with a sharp sense of humor.

In many ways, the exhibition in July, which the organizers spent three years putting together, is experimental. It chronicles Ko's art, and raises issues of censorship and obscenity that once overwhelmed the industry. For the exhibition in July, 10 artists will pay homage to Ko.

Film director and critic Kim Hong-joon will present a film that compares Ko's work with a film by Kim Ki-young, a veteran filmmaker.

Ko Seong-il, the artist's third son and a musical producer, will put on a show called When You Think of Me, inspired by his father's artistic spirit, at a different venue.

A retrospective of the work of cartoonist Ko Woo-yung will give fellow artists a chance to re-evaluate Ko's contributions to contemporary culture. [JoongAng Ilbo]

My father never drew random cartoons from his imagination, recalls Seong-il. People identified with his sense of humor because he mixed the social awareness of his time with his own experience.

^ I agree with you, Bi should totally take on Four Seasons. Sequels usu. don't work out, and I'm not really rooting for Full House to come up with a sequel :/ Besides, it would be so hard for them to get back the original cast too, so why bother huh.
