ALONG WITH THE GODS Tops Taiwan Box Office

Korean Fantasy Epic a Theatrical Hit Overseas

wSckNAKijdshBIQSpILl.jpg

  • Korea’s year-end chart-topper Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds is also proving to be a strong performer overseas, after topping the box office in Taiwan during the Christmas weekend. The film opened on 80 screens across the island nation and beat out Hollywood heavyweights such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Greatest Showman to take home the weekend crown.

Back in Korea, the film continues to set the box office alight after scoring two first-place finishes. On January 3rd, the fantasy epic became the 16th Korean film to cross the 10 million viewer benchmark, and the second 2017 title to do so, following last summer’s A Taxi Driver.

Elsewhere, the film has also found favor with North American audiences, after accumulating a respectable USD 723,295 from 17 theaters following 11 days of release. Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds was also released in Thailand on December 28th and Vietnam the following day. Next up for the blockbuster are theatrical releases in Indonesia on January 5th and Cambodia, Laos, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand on January 11th.

From Take Off (2009) director KIM Yong-hwa, Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds is the first installment of a two-part adaptation of the popular ‘Along with the Gods’ webcomic by JOO Ho-min. CHA Tae-hyun stars as a firefighter who dies and is escorted by a group of guardian angels (played by HA Jung-woo, JU Ji-hoon and KIM Hyang-gi) to a series of trials in the after-life.

‘Along with the Gods,’ ‘1987’ dominate once again

08215913.jpg

Korea’s weekend box office did not see any major shifts over the weekend as fantasy adventure drama “Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds” came in first for the third consecutive weekend, while historical drama “1987: When the Day Comes,” held strong in second place.

But action drama “Steel Rain,” which is one of the three big-budget movies released last month, dropped two spots following the debut of “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and “The Story of Ferdinand.”

“Along with the Gods,” adapted from Joo Ho-min’s successful webtoon of the same title, sold 1.32 million tickets at 1,257 screens from Friday to Sunday, accounting for 36.4 percent of the entire weekend sales. Since its release on Dec. 20, the blockbuster has raked in a total of 92.5 billion won ($83 million) through sales of 13.2 million tickets.

Despite controversy over having diverged from the original story featured in the webtoon, the Kim Yong-hwa-directed movie, starring Ha Jung-woo, Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hyang-gi, managed to become the first film to have sold more than 10 million tickets this year - the feat it achieved 16 days after its release.

The historical drama “1987,” which depicts the turbulent days of Korea’s democracy movement, when student activists were murdered at the hands of the military police, came in at second in its second weekend with 1.01 million admissions sold. The film saw a boost in buzz over the weekend after President Moon Jae-in watched the flick in central Seoul on Sunday. “1987” has sold a total of 4.1 million tickets since it landed at theaters on Dec. 27.

Action adventure movie “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” a sequel to the 1995 feature film starring Robin Williams, sold 657,000 admissions in its debut weekend.

The fantasy comedy, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black, tells the story of four high school students who get sucked into an old video game called “Jumanji,” has been on the receiving end of a great deal of praise from critics, many of which found the film to be better than expected.

The animated “Ferdinand” arrived at fourth in its first weekend while the local action drama “Steel Rain,” starring Jung Woo-sung and Gwak Do-won, rounded out the top five.

*** As of this writing, "1987: When the Day Comes" has claimed the top spot in South Korean theaters, ending the three-week reign of "Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds" at the top of the box office. "Along With the Gods" slid to second place but held strong.  On Thursday, the movie was opened in Hong Kong, the widest release for a Korean film. It already opened at second place in Vietnam, and third in Thailand and Indonesia. I hope the film's popularity in Asian countries will continue, as it is also set to open in Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia this week, and Myanmar and the Philippines later this month.

*** I'm happy that “Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds” continues its success in the overseas market. According to the data by Box Office Mojo, the domestic total of the movie in the US has reached $1.1 million. It started with 17 theaters nationwide in US but now I read that it screens in 35 theaters already. The movie also secured the top position at the Taiwanese box office for three consecutive weeks. The film had secured $6 million in ticket sales in Taiwan.

*** Looking forward to this movie when this will be adapted into a drama. According to the production company, they plan to write a script this year and produce a drama for next year, 2019. Details such as cast, production schedule and broadcast date have not yet been decided. But, I hope JJH will be part of it. The drama plans to stay faithful to the original story. The drama is planning to air not merely in Korea, but around the world. It is positive because the movie has been well-received.

*** UPDATE :

I heard that the script will be written next year (instead of this year) and the drama will be released after that. Still the same, nothing else has yet been confirmed. The movie has a new character named Soo-hong, Ja-hong's brother, while the lawyer, Jin Gi-han, was not included, though. However, the drama will follow the original web-toon.

Lotte Entertainment Enters 10-Million Admissions Club with ALONG WITH THE GODS

tewTslTUhiLqaaihUKmH.jpg

Lotte Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Lotte Group conglomerate, has finally joined the 10 million admissions club thanks to its end-of-year release Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds

Directed by KIM Yong-hwa, the webcomic turned big-budget fantasy epic is the first 10 million viewer film of 2018. Released on December 20, the film officially passed the 10 million admissions mark on January 4 and is the 16th Korean film in history to do so.

The Korean film industry deems a film a blockbuster when it sells 10 million tickets, however accomplishing the feat had eluded Lotte Entertainment, one of Korea’s ‘big 4’ film distributors and owner of the country’s second largest movie theater chain Lotte Cinema, until now. Before Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds, Lotte's top selling film had been The Pirates (2014), which ended its theatrical run with 8.67 million tickets (USD 62.13 million) sold.

Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds has also been selling tickets at an impressive pace. The film came close to matching the record of shortest time for reaching the 10 million viewer milestone, which is currently held by Roaring Currents (2014). Roaring Currents accomplished the feat in 12 days compared to the 16 days it took for Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds. Roaring Currents is still the all-time box office champ, holding the domestic record for highest grossing and most watched film with 17.62 million admissions (USD 127.09 million). Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds currently ranks fifth among Korean films, with 13.04 million admissions (USD 98 million) to date.

The first movie in a two-part series, production for Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds took place simultaneously with its sequel (titled Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days) which will be released this summer.

'Along With The Gods' becomes the 3rd highest grossing Korean film of all-time

'Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds' has become the 3rd highest grossing Korean film of all-time.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the film has garnered over 13,541,967 cumulative number of spectators at the box office as they collected 362,165 viewers this weekend alone. By doing so, 'Along With The Gods' surpassed 'Veteran', another movie that did extremely well, to become the domestic grossing film of all time. The film has grossed a total of $101,823,448 so far. The film is just behind 'Avatar' in terms of gross value but with the quick rise in popularity, it appears to be possible to surpass the iconic movie's incredible number as well.

7 Amazing Films from the cast of 'Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds'

DO,cha-tae-hyun,joo-ji-hoon,ha-jung-woo_

The first month of 2018 hasn't even passed but one of the biggest movies of 2017/2018 has already hit the screens in South Korea.

'Along With the Gods: The Two World,' a fantasy genre movie directed by Kim Yong Hwa, is breaking records across the board and is almost at the 13 million viewer mark in South Korea. If you can't get enough of this movie or have run out of money to go view 'Along With the Gods' a second, third, or fourth time, in theaters, here are 7 other films from this cast.

3. Joo Ji Hoon 'Antique'

Joo Ji Hoon took a step away from his more recent serious roles with his portrayal of Wonmaek, but his first movie, 'Antique,' was the perfect piece to showcase his range of comic and serious acting skills. 'Antique,' also a webtoon-based movie, markets itself as a film with pretty boys and beautiful cakes but don't be fooled by that or the trailer. This bizarre, surreal film has its darker tones that can chill any viewer to the very core. It's a quirky feature and a hodgepodge of all the movie genres ever, could be a confusing first watch, but it's definitely a refreshing take.
