Celebrating KNJ's Baeksang!!! So deserved. Glad Stranger/Secret Forest was acknowledged. But SAD JH didn't win a much-deserved Baeksang for his rendering of a great role in Money Flower .

    [Drama 2018] Misty 미스티

Page 66’s first three posts demonstrate how scrambled Misty was. I followed Misty for the story, which sounded interesting, and the cast. I enjoy mystery for sure but that wasn’t the draw here for me. Interestingly, after reading @justamom’s post, I surfed a bit to see how the drama was advertised and found there was a lack of clarity from the beginning about what Misty was. I think there’s a relationship with our experience of Misty being all over the place as @40somethingahjumma 's and @jd50's comments describe (director and writer not on the same page and messing around with ideas, putting stuff here and there). JTBC Worldwide called Misty Romance, Drama, Revenge in that order. Wikipedia covered all bases with Melodrama, Mystery, Thriller, Romance. Soompi coverage and Dramabeans called it a mystery melodrama. One of our moderators posted looking forward to a +19 romance and melodrama. I couldn’t find a press release, but Yonhap News Agency quoted the director, possibly at the presscon, as saying Misty was “more than just a gripping story...depicts unpretentious love...” No wonder our brains can’t compute this experience. What was this thing? And what was it supposed to have been? Just finished watching a la Misty Redux as I posted on p 65 and saw many things I missed first time out bcuz they kept us so distracted with red herrings. Three times the camera lingered on KL’s scar…were we going to need to i.d. him in the morgue? Music gets creepy when TW walks over to HR with the letter opener…”I’ve got to kill again!!!” Really poor. So many mis-directions, meaningless and taking up screen time and neural space. While ep 15/16 were better for me the Redux way, the last 15-20 minutes are aaargh regardless. And psycho MW getting schmaltzy, too, especially with EJ and opera in the background. Like the first time, 16 went the way of Hallmark cards for me. (I do buy them at times...) Despite all the criticisms I've made, I'd still recommend Misty, with caveats.

Try this; you may like it: Misty Redux for those of us who disliked how the drama went! Re-watch and at ep 4 when it’s revealed that KL dies in a car crash, mentally add a quick flashback of KL and TW fighting, KL dying then and TW unsuccessful in killing himself with KL in the car (10 secs). Watch the rest of the drama with that truth firmly in mind. I’m re-watching that way now, and IMO Misty would have been much much better if TW’s accidental killing of KL and attempt to die -- as the brooch fell on the car floor -- were shown to viewers in ep 4 when KL died. As I’m watching this way, it’s much more interesting: I found HR more likable...seeing her being duped day by day. Eun Joo is more interesting, even KL’s manager, even the detective, lol! HR not explaining to TW how her brooch (and that brooch yet) was returned through KL is even more horrifying since I'm witnessing its real-time relationship to the eruption of anger soon after which caused KL’s death and ruined TW’s life and a newly shared love. TW accompanying HR to KL’s wake (!!) Closing his eyes with some emotion after looking at KL’s photo, it was like “Wow, I never noticed that in Misty.” As he looks at EJ then, it’s more meaningful since TW knows he made her a widow – and I clearly know that, too. When EJ tries to engage TW as her attorney...his reticence had deeper meaning. Certain of the truth in Misty Redux, nothing is lost, entertainment value is gained, and we still see all the contradictions in TW, HR and everyone else. The story can play out mostly like it was initially written. Then “I wanted to look perfect to you” isn’t the sum response, which had sounded ridiculous when Misty aired that ep. In ep 5, when HR returns to News Nine and takes the high road as she reports on her situation, we see TW watching; he and his asst are moved by her quality. TW’s also been hearing HR’s reporter friend/source insist HR would never have been with KL, so TW’s looking a bit regretful, wistful for the first time since Thailand. This means something different to me now. Later, TW meets HR at work in the garage and tells her she was “great” on the news that night and to lean on him. With his anger passed, he’s found a way to get closer to HR, and I experience it as both genuine and deceitful. When TW then told HR that he’d been angry that she was involved in any way with someone as unsavory as KL (I hadn’t heard it like that in Misty; I only got the sexual overtone), it made me wonder if TW somehow excused his accidental killing of KL because of his low opinion of KL as an adulterous low-class sleaze. In Misty Redux, TW’s staid privileged upbringing seems to play a role in how easily he submerged his culpability. TW’s comment to HR then that he will do whatever he can “to make it all up to you” took on new meaning as well. TW sure owed HR the Golden Door as he explains “I can’t even protect my wife (dropping that brooch) so why protect my principles.” TW always seemed confident that HR wouldn’t remain a suspect. But seeing through a different lens now, I realized he had to make sure she wasn’t indicted; so I see his use of his family’s connections differently. In Misty Redux we know that TW owes HR at least all of this…And I still can’t hate him, lol! So, for those of you “down” about how Misty went, you might try Misty Redux! Or suggest to friends who want to watch for the first time and you're conflicted cuz they'll hate the end and maybe you. I’m no longer a victim to the dubious trickery of a new writer and enjoying Misty like I did early on – and even more. Off to start watching Prison Playbook….it was great here!

I am only familiar with SHS in MGL and the others I don't know. SHS and KNJ are not in the same league as actors (at least not yet) and SHS's MGL role pales by comparison to KNJ's in Misty. Kim Nam Joo had a lot to work with and took it to the top...KNJ for Baeksang actress, Yes! I watched Secret Forest after MGL ended to wipe away another disappointing drama that started high and went downhill, in MGL's case turning into a soap. SF was thoroughly enjoyable, well crafted and I have to say IMO better deserving of best drama award since Misty's writer ruined the last eps and left so many tag ends (r we up to 25 yet?), etc. etc. -- and even though Misty -- with all the writing flaws -- still got a rise out of me like nothing else in a long time.

Never thought I’d still be posting on Misty, lol. But after the shock of eps 15-16 wore off, I’ve mulled over what made me so uneasy and realized that one thing stood out beyond numerous others: What the writer did to or didn’t do for the progression of the character TW was the worst for me. TW’s fall from grace was reduced to “I wanted to look perfect to you.” Really? Sorry, TW couldn’t be just about “looking perfect” for HR -- maybe HR, parents and a bit of profession, society, etc. That I can see. Admitting he didn’t want to lose his freedom and making that “okay” since KL’s death was accidental. The detective’s surprising accusation against HR boosting TW’s chances of successfully hiding the truth. Even TW about to “do the right thing” and turn himself in but then another easy out presented itself with MW’s confession. I am not opposed to stories that show how people can get “misty” about their behavior. But when the writer made TW fall from grace, how about some dialogue to go with it? That’s the big beef for me. How were we supposed to think about TW’s unraveling? Why didn't the writer let him tell us either through talking to HR or his father? This was a man who described chains of events to juries for years. How did he stop being the duty-bound man, defender of truth and justice? When “that one” couldn’t die in the car with KL, how did TW move so nonchalantly through all the days with HR -- and everyone else? I get that the writer wanted suspense, so was waiting to tell us at the end. But she did that so poorly, making us try to bridge her gaps to understand TW’s motivations as eps 15 and 16 whizzed by on the last weekend. I feel so much better now, like I’ve removed a splinter. But I’m still not going to watch currently airing dramas for a while. Too many poor endings, Misty the most disappointing. Loving the long Misty OSTs out now on YT including the instrumental.

https://www.dramafever.com/news/spoiler-alert-misty-screenwriter-discusses-the-shows-shocking-ending/ The writer is very slick, deflecting criticism of eps 15-16 by saying the audience was shocked by TW being the murderer. I don't like this one bit: what she says is way way overstated and she insults many of Misty's audience. @justamomthanks for sharing this article, though I've got to say it's added "insult to injury." Almost wish I hadn't known about it, lol. Them's fightin' words! lol...Continuing on with others' reactions to this latest travesty -- eps 15-16 and the writer's CYA maneuvers: Dear Writer: what about @maddymappo 's list here, which we could likely expand A LOT if we had any energy left from your demoralizing finish: "What would be your question if you get a chance to interview the writer? There are so many. Here are some of min. Here is mine: 1. Where was Kevin going and who was he meeting that night? 2. What was the "secret" Hr's mom spoke of" 3. Why did Eun Joo know Knock Knock Knocking on Heaven's Door would upset Hr? 4. Did Tw leave the brooch in the car on purpose, or lose it? 5. What was the offer to be station director all about? Did Hr trade off a not guilty verdict to get that job and sell out to protect golden door and the Hwanil Steel and the construction company:? (And did Hr and Dir. Jang come to an understanding about it to two time golden door? )" Yes, writer: what about the fact that you made a drama littered with stuff you never got to satisfactorily?????? That's Drama Writing 101. Here's more writer from @jd50 's posts, I've highlighted in bold: jd50: ....cut post..... The ending also haunts me. I don't find it misty, but rather sad and with a cynicism about human nature that I don't share. Yes, please take responsibility Misty writer for your very public mistakes. And last but not least, @40somethingahjumma tells it like is... or was... Gets directly to the bottom line that it wasn't TW as the killer that stunned us, but what the writer chose to do about it. (highlighted in bold) Take receipt writer-nim! ...cutting post.... In the end TW wracked with guilt, couldn't bear the burden of keeping the secret but feeling that he had to protect HR at any cost, did himself in. That's the part I'm really objecting to. I wanted TW to go to prison because then it would confirm to me that there was some good in him, that he wasn't some big hypocrite or coward that wasn't able to walk the talk. He didn't mean to kill Kevin although in fear he tried to cover up what he'd done. kdyes: Yes! They were brawling and it ended in accidental death, for crying out loud. This was NOT MW sticking a knife in someoone's gut!! Why couldn't there be a more likely follow-up given it was an accident. Even covering up at first but coming to terms with it as normal people would. 40something: It was important for me to know that he was capable of repentance. But the writer wouldn't even give us that. It was more lies and cover up in the end. Whatever the intention was... whether it was some kind of existential statement about the nature of truth and love... the reality is the majority of the audience didn't buy into it. I certainly didn't because there was an underlying nihilism to the ending that wasn't there before. So while the writer might have been making a "bold" statement about love with that final sequence, what actually came across to me as a viewer felt more like despair. What also really bothers me is also the moral relativism that pervades the entire narrative. That there is no objective truth or right or wrong. If that being the case, why bother with investigative journalism? What's the point of cops, prosecutors and the rule of law? Why bother with corruption? If truth telling is purely for personal convenience then what is the point of any kind of journalism? Everyone who's watched Return knows it's a dark series. It's never pretended to be anything else. Despite the bleakness that hovers over the entire series, it's not a nihilistic series. It actually affirms objective truth... in right and wrong... in universal justice. And it believes in redemption, repentance and forgiveness. Despite the brutality of the crimes committed and the amorality of some of the individuals, there is a strong sense of morality running right through it. Ultimately wrongdoers have to be punished and they are. I don't see that in Misty. In fact, despite all the so-called speaking truth to power, it's an amoral universe where individuals decide what truth and love means according to what's convenient at the time. It's what that last 15 minutes informs me.To me that's a lot bleaker and a lot more depressing than anything in Return. Oh dear... Rambling on ...The real mystery for me on hindsight wasn't who killed Kevin or why but who is KTW? Despite the ending, I can't say that I know him much less understand him. That's fine on some level but it makes it hard for me to see him... just like Detective Kang... as anything more than a plot device because I still have a hard time reconciling the contradictions in his character. Kdyes here: Okay, writer. I hope these comments will give you pause for thought next time you decide to conceive a drama. Maybe do a series on a man who "can't have it all" like HR, his dark side too, marriage problems, getting pushed out for aging...lol Please no more PR positioning about your bad choices in Misty! Meanwhile, thanks for eps 1-14! They were great, even if we are left with so many tag ends you never managed. See you in class!

Thanks for sharing this. Each sentence gets right at it. When a show is really good, like Misty, it's shocking to discover the writer's view and taste are pretty dismal after all. So many great options were passed up, so much potential wasted. Everyone's like "this was so unnecessary" "Why did you pick skunk weed and not those beautiful irises?" Many expectations were set up by the writer and production promotion but not delivered on. As someone said, we were left with so many clues and bits of this and that that were just forgotten, disappeared into the mist of Misty. If the writer actually thought that was okay, then she needs to go back and get better at the craft of following through to the end. Many of us in the audience are having the experience of thinking we really know the man we've been dating and getting serious about and suddenly discover he's been wearing a mask and it's just a front. Fooled 'ya! Ah, Misty! Added: Like HR, I'm now feeling aversion toward getting involved with any relationship that doesn’t have certainty. So, I’m going to take a rest from currently airing shows for a while.

Hi Everyone, There are loads of good comments at the end of www.dramabeans.com/2018/03/misty-episodes-15-16-final-open-thread/ Some funny, many detailed and echoing ours. Loved someone's who said they couldn't wait to see the kdrama about how a man can't have both career and love, etc. Enjoy!

There was a lot of discussion when TW first turned up in the interrogation room that his appearance was too fast, too smooth and a great cover for someone who murdered the corpse in question. He switched "overnight" from disaffected, kind of remote to supportive, etc. This came up several other times...like when TW broke the glass with one hand and we discussed how he could have caused the bruise on KL's wrist. But the collapse of TW the character? I don't recall any of us thinking the writer would murder TW's character -- and wield quite the hatchet to HR's too. So dismal. In my opinion, eps 15/16 seem like they come from another drama.

Have had tech problems with Soompi and unable to participate for 10 days or more!! Here’s what I posted on Bah-Doo, our intrepid re-capper's site. Nice posting there, too! Read all your Soompi posts and wanted to like, etc. So frustrating!! Have enjoyed the weeks with all of you! Now on for some JJH viewing of other dramas where he isn’t Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde… ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ I kind of agree. I was once again appalled in ep 15 at how completely inconsiderate (putting it mildly) HR was when TW gave her back the brooch telling her KL gave it to him in the bar…and you don’t EXPLAIN to your husband???? Her complete lack of aware concern caused TW so much suffering and it ended in KL’s accidental death and eventually TW’s too (sounds like he commits suicide at the end of 16). HR, you’re a top anchorwoman and great fun to watch but a miserable partner. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yeah, why make the HR character such a flop in so many important ways…I’ve met many powerful women (maybe not at the HR level) but who also are great communicators about feelings, are empathetic, verbally responsible in difficult situations. The writer “murdered” both HR and TW characters, at least for me. Sends a negative message about women and power and their effect “on their men.” __________________________________________________________________________________________________ I’m nominating HR and TW for the Worst-Communicating Couple in Kdramaland! Given their obvious intelligence and professional-yet communications skills, I feel the writer went too far. I can never get over HR not communicating with TW to clear things up immediately when he gave her the brooch KL had given him in the bar. Didn’t she care about TW’s feelings?? Wouldn’t anyone be out of their minds if someone like KL gives them their wife’s brooch? And HR’s “I love you let’s end it” was handled like an ingenue, which didn’t ring true to me. Sure, she’d have big intimacy issues, etc. but laying it on her mother being used by men and remaining poor was over the top for me given HR was nearing 40, had made loads of money herself and married someone who was loaded and wouldn’t leave no matter what she did. Then there’s TW: you accidentally kill someone and the brooch you had implicates your wife (though unintended) and you don’t immediately explain everything? Nah, not good enough. The writer made them “too far gone” to ever work things out. I’d have preferred the reveal about TW in ep 15 and some attempts between the couple to come to grips together about the situation after MW turned himself in. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Final thoughts after 16 w/subs. Feel like the writer was trying to sound profound and “make messages” but didn’t pull it off. IMO came off somewhat nihilistic and not deep. Examples: “There is nothing but falsehood.” EJ “People just live day to day thinking it’s the right thing to do.” Dir. Jang “Nobody’s fault just living our lives.” MW. Forget who delivered these: “So, you need to live for the day that was given to you.” “Our lives continue on we don’t know what the end brings us, what lies ahead.” “Perhaps we try to catch things that are impossible to catch. Is that why we live life like we’re crazy?” Not exactly Hallmark cards, but meh. For me, last line of the show was lame: “So are you happy?” I wonder if TW would have suicided if Detective hadn’t stopped him just before with “I can’t stand to see a criminal living well,” after telling TW that MW will get life at least. Though I didn’t care for how the writer steered Misty in last eps, just loved most of Misty.
  11. In living rooms across S. Korea everyone’s asking tonight: “Honey, Mom, Dad, when did the golden life happen?” Maybe the writer’s health challenge played a role in turning MGL into a darn soap opera. She certainly had a chance to make many golden moments. But obviously from what we saw, she never planned to get off the angsty track. It would have been so easy to create 2 new eps filled with resolutions and what happens after. The ending with loose ends…Couldn’t she decide after all this time and with 2 more eps? Thank goodness for LUTYN, Money Flower and Misty or I’d be wrecked. I was glad to have been exposed to SHS, tho’ bored when she was turned into “the Weeper.” And happy for PSH’s return, tho’ he wound up slinking from one background to the next (why writer?). Enjoyed so many posts for 51/52 and got to laugh a lot…yes, the OTP was like a "teenage romance" (no sizzle allowed); JA holding onto “a creepy doll” of DK, actually “a curse” lol…but she returned the necklace…. Aaaaaahhh…Ending leaving us “speechless.” Maybe if we can tear the pink jump poster to shreds we’ll feel better; or we can just imagine the other ending someone suggested where they hopped in bed. Thanks to all of you who contributed so much sincerely and positively in your posts and to those of you who translated and ran so many great stills/bts and recaps with screen capture and video. See you out there in drama-land hopefully for better shows. EDIT after watching w/subs: Hadn't seen raw either when commented above but had read ur vivid posts. Was glad for resolution of a number of characters but typical of this writer we got minutes at most of resolution...what's the writer got against good news? Too much TS/dying/remembering, tho' I appreciated some. Really MGL became a soap opera with not that much character development, just this event, that bit of dialogue, etc. Meh. She made DK ridiculous with the pushy/following around stuff, caricature after he/JA broke up. I was laughing out loud. Why create an OTP who keep struggling with so much dissatisfaction...beats me.

Can definitely see this happening. I really don't want TW to be the murderer, if there is one. So was glad to see this comment, lol. At first a number of posts mentioned that there might have been several altercations that night. Perhaps TW "had it out" with KL and grabbed him even with intent to harm his golf career.

Reading this reminder about how TW kind of "came alive" with renewed interest in HR once KL appeared and post by @jd50 recounting TW's physical outbursts -- punching the guy in the face and breaking a glass with one hand -- I had an uneasy feeling about TW as capable of murdering KL in a fit of rage. At first, a number of us considered TW as having motive of course, but we kind of passed on it as other options looked more likely or interesting. I do think that TW became more interested in closeness with HR not only when KL appeared; it seemed that when TW overhead HR expressing strong regret of the abortion, which she told his mother while on her knees, that TW's behavior began changing right then when he came into the room and tore up the divorce document. If TW killed KL in a fight, accidentally or intentionally, he probably would not have wanted HR to be blamed. Unfortunately, that could explain why TW has been so dogged about helping HR get free. Somewhere I read that we are going to be very surprised at the end. Everything's starting to be like gossip that knocks around inside and I find myself having all kinds of thoughts.

These glaring contradictions are why I am so eager to see where we're headed with HR as she connects with her heart and personal morality. How much will she change without losing the powerful leader-like side of her? I hope she can live from both.

    [Drama 2018] Misty 미스티

Ep 9-10 and ahead…Can’t believe how I’ve been “captured,” a bit drunk on Misty. Addictive tendencies showing! Is that lol or aaaaaaahhhh? HR’s finally coming ‘round to facing the personal in living and being vulnerable to this man who loves her, being vulnerable to loving someone herself, moment by moment, loving someone right in front of her. It had taken me a while to accept that HR didn’t have a deep love for TW after all these years. But I got over that when she said point blank: “You can’t divorce me” not with the Blue House investigation. (eek!) Yet, I also believed her regret in front of MIL about the abortion. HR, so complicated and closed down emotionally. She said plain as day when TW proposed, “I don’t love you,” that she was “very greedy, terrible personality, selfish” (check, check and check) and all that unapologetic stuff about how she’d use him. Right now, I’m so glad that TW was head-over-heels since it clouded this “elegant character’s” judgment (as HR described him); and he said confidently, “I can make you.” Yeah, right. Both were way too reticent and complicated in their communications; that doesn’t nurture love and nearly killed their marriage. Typically, TW says, “it’s nothing” when HR asks what happened to his hand. That was a whole lot of “nothing” as he drank himself into oblivion...as we know. Yet TW isn’t a shrinking violet, however patient and caring he may be: “Shall we have a drink, just us men?” he said to KL in Bangkok. He fights for truth and justice, too, not the domain of shrinking violets. However, that “elegant character” is completely different from HR’s way of being in the world. HR’s speech is full of confident pronouncements delivered just the way a charismatic leader would – she’s never off-stage it seems…till now. But pronouncements don’t cut it in one’s personal life and certainly not in HR’s which has gone out of control. Still she’s so sharp and strong under pressure as she demonstrates with the detective, prosecutor and faux lawyer during her 2-day detention and how she teams up to take down the congressman. But now in ep 11’s preview, she’s acknowledging that she’d found her confidence all these years from certainty she did not love TW. Yes, love has a way of kicking the confidence right out from under you. Go, HR and TW, make up for lost time…we’ll be so happy, too! Can’t wait to see how the writer and KNJ will handle HR vulnerable but all grown up.
