  1. Soron historical figure Jo Hyeon Myeong (조현명,趙顯命, 1690 - 1752) express his willingness to enter Sigangwon (시강원, 侍講院, in full known as Seja Si Gang Won 세자시강원 世子侍講院, Crown Prince Tutorial Office). It is a fully function administration institution which staff officialdom from 1st rank to 7th rank. He most probably will be holding the designation of Director (사, 師). At the moment, there are vacancy aplenty in this office
  2. Episode 11 Min Jin Heon in this episode is now Jwauijeong (좌의정,左議政, Second State Councillor or literally left State Councillor), commonly refer/address as Jwasang (좌상 左相), it is a officialdom that immediately below Prime Minster (영의정,領議政, Yeonguijeong) Jwauijeong (좌의정,左議政, Second State Councillor or literally Left State Councillor) is an officialdom of Senior 1st rank (정1품,正一品). It looks like he had been promoted from Hanseongbu (한성부 漢城府, Capital Magistracy)'s Panyun ( 판윤 判尹, officialdom Senior 2nd rank 정2품 ,正二品) The introduction of Historical figure Jo Tae Gu (조태구, 趙泰耉, 1660 - 1723, played by Son Byeong Ho) who came to the capital dress in a satgat headgear & was carrying a kitten, is the leader of Soron who went to discuss alliance with Min Jin Heon. Min Jin Heon address him by his pen-name Ha Guk (하곡, 霞谷). He is consider a moderate Soron In the drama his officialdom is Uuijeong (우의정 右議政, Third State Councillor or literally Right State Councillor). General address is Usang (우상 右相). It is also an officialdom of Senior 1st rank (정1품,正一品). Gyeongjong orders Yeongjo to participate in Giroyeon (Banquet to honour the Elders), where in that platform, he gave his great soapbox oratory on land tax that arouse public sentiment, voice their protest on Yi Geum deposition by surrendering their identity tag (Hopae, 호패,戶牌, 號牌) The custom of respecting the elderly can be traced to the necessity of their abundant leadership, and such a spirit of respect continued from the royal courts of the Three Kingdoms to Goryeo and Joseon. In particular, the Joseon Dynasty strengthened the Giro system in order to stably maintain and develop a centralizing system based on Confucianism as a governing ideology, and King Taejo instituted it as a part of a policy of respecting and serving one’s parents. Giroso (기로소, 耆老所, Office of Elders) refers to a social bureau for civil ministers at the senior officialdom of 2nd court rank & of 70 or more years of age consulting the King and participating in important national affairs to help the King. When senior officials over 70 years entered Giroso, the King granted them jingwejang (진궤장 進几杖) that comprise of a leaning chairs known as "anseok" - 案席, & a cane known as "gwejang" - 궤장,几杖 ) and held a feast, which is referred to as Giroyeon. Giroyeon was held in spring on March 3 of the lunar calendar and on Jungyangjeol (the ninth day of the ninth lunar month). In this drama, Gyeongjong is seen as a fair ruler with conscience. One must remember that he was investiture as Crown Prince at the age of 2 years old in 1690 & received his statecraft education since then & was indeed groom to be King. In history Sukjong never wanted to deposed Gyeongjong as Crown Prince even the aftermath of his mother. Sukjong just want to safeguard his lineage with Yeongjo to succeed his childless brother
  3. @akhenaten Kim Ki Young also wrote the drama "Yi San" feature a rather "grumpy pot" Yeongjo, therefore she had cover the life & times of Yeongjo Dong Yi - the cute adorable Yeongjo Haechi - the suave & handsome Yeongjo Yi San - the grumpy pot Yeongjo
  4. Although the drama is said "Based on historical events, reconstruction & casting liberties are taken for entertainment purpose" History lesson Age Gap Queen Dowager Inwon (1687-1757) Yi Yun aka Gyeongjong (1688-1724) Yi Geum aka Yeongjo (1694-1776) Queen Dowager Inwon, Sukjong 3rd Queen is 7 years older than Yeongjo & a year older than Gyeongjong. In 1702, Queen Inwon married Sukjong when she was 15 & Sukjong then was already 42. In 1703, Queen Inwon adopted Gyeongjong & Yeongjo as her sons Queen Inwon support Yeongjo out of gratitude as in 1711, she came down with smallpox & Yeongjo's mother Royal Noble Consort Sukbin (maybe she already had smallpox immunity) stay at her side to nurse her with common folk remedies & survives. Even political wise, if I was Queen Inwon, I will put my bet on Yeongjo for my longevity of my Queenship. Gyeongjong was of ill health & said to suffer sterility (in Dong Yi, he was said to had Mumps & consequences was sterility). Others rumour is that when his mother Jang Ok Jung was sentence to death, she use him as a shield & in the process injured his chance for posterity. Earlier in the drama, Crown Prince is support by Namin Faction which supported Jang Hee Bin, his mother, but lost political dominance after she was deposed as Queen but retain her Consortship Political Parties During the reign of Sukjong, Namin & Seoin were the political faction that tussle for political dominance which end up in bloody purges or change of governance with death & exiles. It is of no help when Sukjong shift political alliance as his whims chose by playing one side to another. Min Jin Heon hated him for that. Queen Inhyeon, Sukjong 2nd Queen & Min Jin Heon's sister & later Queen Inwon were from the Seoin faction & maintain political dominance Later in Sukjong reign, in 1683, the Seoin faction split what is in the drama Noron & Soron factions (this is why they are still cordial to one another). Namin faction disappear into the woodwork. When Gyeongjong ascended the throne, he was supported by Soron. When Yeongjo ascended the throne with Noron support but Yeongjo was always wary on Noron dominance in Court & try bring a balance with Soron in governance. Yeongjo exercise a policy of impartiality In Yi In Jwa Revolt of 1728, which lasted 4 days, that place Prince Milpunggun as King, it was the Soron who suppress the revolt, although Yi In Jwa was said to be from a "rogue" Soron faction. Yeongjo entrust the moderate Soron especially Yi Gwang Jwa (Im Ho) to suppress the revolt, not to render benefit to the Noron But feuding factions don't learn their lesson, Soron decides to support on Crown Prince Sado which we know ends up in disaster Namin makes a political comeback under the reign of Jeongjo when Jeongjo tutor & Crown Prince Sado friend later Prime Minister Chae Je Gong was from the Namin faction
  5. Episode 9 Crown Prince Yi Geum is "shock" to see Yeo Ji in a "qipao" furthermore the notice of the high slit The Chinese Qipao (旗袍) was originally loose fitting attire but the one that Yeo Ji is wearing "figure hugging high slit" is a 1920s Shanghai invention. A popular culture when a woman is seen wearing such an attire, it is a stereotype depiction as seductive The Chinese Qipao in the 18th century should be..... It will not pass the Confucian minded Yi Geum & in turn make an excuse for her to wear the Japanese kimono (all wrap up attire) which have his approval A background story worth knowing The girl Go Mi who was punished harshly & banished by Yun Yeong from Prime Minister household & was saved by Dal Moon Is she the same girl dressed as a man that went to the brothel & stabbed an official & have a tattoo "殺主" (살주, to kill the Master) on her back & left Yi Geum with a dead corpse The new thug in town Do Ji Gwang (도지광) who open a new brothel in Nak Seon Bang (낙선방,樂善坊, presently Euljiro 4-ga 을지로4가 area) speak with a saturi & goes "upheavel" Dal Moon's territory, seem to be looking for someone, also running the human trafficking racket @yoo1 "Btw, can't find anything about Park Moon-soo's family background... Did he have family or will be having a family, like wife and children? " You need to look at Park Munsu or Bak Munsu (박문수, 朴文秀; 1691–1756). He is from Goryeong Park clan (고령 박씨, 高靈 朴氏). He was married but didn't mentioned any children but he had descendants

No yet.....at the moment, Ha Cho Hong designation of Sanggung (상궁 尙宮) is more Yi Geum's Lady in Waiting/Palace Court Lady or female version of Jeeves the Valet that manage & attend to his personal affairs e.g. clothing & appearance & etc. Title Dae Ryeok Sang gung (대령상궁,待令尙宮) or Jimil Sang Gung (지밀상궁, 至密尙宮) which have the officialdom 5th rank (정5품 正五品). In order for her to enter as Consort, she needs to enter Naemyeongbu (내명부, 內命婦)'s Naegwan (내관, 內官 Royal Consorts with officialdom 4th rank & above), at the moment she is a gunggwan (궁관, 宮官, Palace Court Ladies officialdom from 5th to 9th) Misuri (무수리), the former rank of Royal Noble Consort Sukbin of Choe clan was 9th rank Footnote: Palace Court Ladies are consider The King's Woman. If the Court Lady whatever the rank receive the effectual sign of grace & favour e.g. bedfellow from the King known as Seung Eun (승은,承恩). For example if Gyeongjong grant Ha Cho Hong "Seung Eun, there is nothing that Yi Geum can do, even though Ha Cho Hong is his household staff. Ja Dong, Yi Geum's private residence personal aide now runs Aek Jeong Seo (액정서,掖庭署, Bureau of Royal Messengers), the office that run the Crown Prince household affairs

The first case is human trafficking Wi Byeong Ju have been fast track promoted to Jibui (집의,執義, Officialdom Junior 3rd rank 종3품, 從三品) & the former Jibui promoted to Daesaheon (대사헌, 大司憲; 종2품,從二品) Crown Prince Yi Geum & Park Mun Su not having a honeymoon in their newly designated position Literati protest on Yi Geum's eligibility. Soron even Gyeongjong suspicion on his intent Wi Byeong Ju have every intent to "eject" Park Mun Su out of Saheonbu Queen Dowager Inwon having spat with Queen Seonui History Queen Seonui of Eo clan's father Eo Yu Gu (어유구, 魚有龜, 1675 - 1740) was one of the core founders of the Noron faction who had said to had "conspire" with the Soron during the reign of Gyeongjong. But recently reveal personal letter of Yeongjo written to Eo Yu Gu kept by descendants suggested otherwise We know that Cho Hong have a surname Ha (하, 河,何, 夏). Crown Princess Seo ssi refer her as Ha Sanggung Soron historical figure Jo Hyeon Myeong (조현명,趙顯命, 1690 - 1752) is introduce. He hold the official rank Dong Ji Sa (동지사 ,종2품 同知事 從二品, Fourth minister at the Office of Ministers-without-Portfolio -중추부(中樞府).

Episode 9 There is a change of portfolio Min Jin Heon from Ministry of Personnel (Ijo 이조 吏曹)'s Minister ( Panseo 판서 判書) to Hanseongbu (한성부 漢城府, Capital Magistracy)'s Chief Justice (Panyun 판윤 判尹). His officialdom rank still remain as Senior 2nd rank (정2품, 正二品) Yi Yi Gyeom who was the Daesaheon of Saheonbu is now promoted to Minister of Personnel Cho Hong is now Sanggung
  9. @lightbringer06 "Dal Moon and Yoon Young really had a history together, perhaps even romantically?..since it says "Yeonin"." "엿연인" (Yeos Yeon In) means undisclosed relationship The word "연인" (Yeon In) also may suggest as "然人" & not "戀人" In the Crown Prince investiture, you may notice Gyeongjong & Prince Yeoningun wearing Myeonryugwan (면류관, 冕旒冠) like something that came out from Qin Shi Huang era. Myeon (면,冕) as in to hide one's face while Ryu (류, 旒) means the strings of beads. It means that the king/Crown Prince is required to avoid personal feelings & desire, to humble himself & to keep his body and mind holy. Joseon King wear 9 strings of beads while Crown Prince has 7 strings of beads. Ming Emperors wear 12 beads. In 1897, when Gojong declare as Emperor of Korea, he wore his Myeonryugwan with 12 strings of beads

  11. History lesson Daesaheon Yi Yi Gyeom ( 이이겸) & Prime Minister Kim Chang Jung (김창중) Daesaheon Yi Yi Gyeom is loosely based on historical figure Yi Yi Myeong (이이명,李頤命 1658 - 1722) Prime Minister Kim Chang Jung is loosely based on historical figure Kim Chang Jib (김창집 ,金昌集, 1648 - 1722) I don't know whether the drama have downplay Shinimsahwa (신임사화, 辛壬士禍, Literati Purge of 1721) but in history Yi Yi Myeong & Kim Chang Jib were the casualties Please note that Daesaheon Yi Yi Gyeom's Mandarin Square (흉배, 胸背) is Haechi
  12. @star2010 "1. is it possible for gisaeng like Yoon Yoeng becomes queen consort?" Not in history, but the closes will be Jang Nok Su, Consort to Yeonsangun (reign from 1494-1506), she was a gisaeng & was rank 3rd rank Su Yong (정3품 소용 正三品 昭容) "2. how does civil exam in Joseon work? How is Moon Soo sure that if he passes the exam he would work at Saheonbu and not another department? Does Minister of Personnel assign jobs for those who pass the exam?" I am sure that the newly investiture Crown Prince has "pull strings" for Park Mun Su to be in Saheonbu. With regards to Civil Examination read up on Gwageo (과거,科擧 or in China it is the Imperial Examination 科举)

  15. @lightbringer06 "Maybe we should ask our historian..... about your question regarding the Cheon surname . @star2010 "Do you know any thing about Cheon surname in Joseon? is it a common for people to have that last name beside Lee, Kim and Park?" Korean surname "천" (Cheon) have different hanja/chinese character "千, 天, 川" Most Korean that bears the surname Cheon is "千" There is also alternative spelling "Cheon" is spell as "Jeon" (전 hanja 全 田 錢) which you have to listen to its intonation but my auditory perception is that it is the former not the latter We have to see when Cheon Yeo Ji writes her name in hanja to denote what is her surname but the Chinese subtitles have put her surname as "千" In the drama Dong Yi, before she was discover as "Choe" she use her surname as Cheon (천) which was written as "千" "Yeo Ji and Yoon Young share the same last name. Not sure whether they are related or it s just a normal thing to share a same common last name." Yes it is common to have the same surname & not be related. It all depends which bon-gwan (family clan, 본관, 本貫) or which provincial origin (gwan hyang 관향,貫鄕) they belong to Cheon Yun Yeong (천윤영, 千允英) or Bok Dan (복단, 福丹) her Cheon surname is "千 " too Also, who is this woman?..doesn't seem familiar to me ..this woman who Dal Moon was chasing after ? " In the character description, she save young Dal Moon from the streets & look after him but abandon him when she aspire to climb the social class ladder (remember with Yi Tan she wants to be Queen Consort) No one even how low class will not use Cheon (賤) from Cheonmin (賤民) as a surname. It is also not found in Baek Ga Seong (백가성,百家姓, Hundred Family Surnames) For example, take Yeongjo's mother who is from the cheonmin class. Royal Noble Consort Sukbin of Haeju Choe clan Her surname is Choe or Choi & her family clan was Haeju Choi clan (there are approx 160 Choe/Choi clans in Korea) " "what could be Yeoji's new job. She's standing in front of Gwanghwamun Gate, which is the main and largest gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace." Cheon Yeo Ji return to Saheonbu as Damo. In front of Gwanghwamun Gate stands two statues of Haechi. Saheonbu is located on the left side Gwanghwamun Gate The Joseon Ministries offices & bureau stands at both sides of what is today Gwanghwamun Square. On the right side stood Uijeongbu (의정부 議政府, the State Council), Yejo (예조 禮曹, the Ministry of Rites), Ijo (이조 吏曹, Ministry of Personnel, Min Jin Heon's Ministry), Hojo (호조 戶曹 the Ministry of Taxation), Hanseongbu (한성부 漢城府, Capital Magistracy) & Giroso (기로소, 耆老所, the Office of Elders). On the left were Samgunbu (삼군부 三軍府, Three Armies Command), Jungchubu (중추부 中樞府, the Office of Ministers-without-Portfolio), Saheonbu (사헌부 司憲府, the Office of Inspector-General), Byeongjo (병조 兵曹 ,the Ministry of Military Affairs), Hyeongjo (형조 刑曹, the Ministry of Justice), and Gongjo (공조 工曹, the Ministry of Public Works). Since the reign of Gwanghaegun, Gyeongbokgung palace is no longer the primary ruling palace. Changdeokgung palace is.....

Some had mentioned that Cho Hong is loosely based Royal Noble consort Jeongbin of Yi clan (1694-1721) History Jeongbin of Yi clan was a palace maid & enter the Royal Household of Prince Yeoninggun. In 1717 she borne Princess Hwa Eok (화억옹주, 和億翁主 1717-1718). In 1719, she borne Crown Prince Hyojang (효장세자,孝章世子 1719-1728, prior to his Crown Prince, he was title Prince Gyeonguigun - 경의군, 敬義君). " I wrote on Prince Mipunggun Yi Tan (밀풍군 이탄, 密豊君 李坦 1698-1729) on page 7 on this forum He is the Crown Prince Sohyeon Yi Wang 's (소현세자 이왕, 昭顯世子 李汪, 1612 – 1645) great grandson Injo & his Crown Prince were not in the best of terms especially after the Crown Prince return from his study tour to Manchuria/political hostage to the Qing, later Injo towards his daughter in law Crown Princess Minhoe (1611-1646, Sukjong reinstated her Crown Princess status in 1718, depicted in the drama). Injo charge his daughter in law for treason thus making her sons void to succeed the throne. Injo exile & killed 2 out of 3 Crown Princess Minhoe's son. Prince Milpunggun Yi Tan descend from Crown Princess Minhoe's youngest son Prince Gyeongangun Yi Hoe (경안군 이회, 慶安君 李檜, 1644 - 1665) Injo made Grand Prince Bongrim, his 2nd son as Crown Prince & later succeed Injo as Hyojong. Sukjong, Gyeongjong & Yeongjo are from his lineage The 2013 Jbtc drama Cruel palace - War of Flower (궁중잔혹사 – 꽃들의 전쟁) is one of the best depiction "And btw, to any Korean historians out there, do you know why they normally change their names when they become the king, like Yi Geum/Yeoning, for example, where it was later changed to King Yeongjo, and his grandson Yi San, changed to Jeongjo who proceeded as the next king. Take an example on Yeongjo Given name Yi Geum (이금, 李昑) Infant name: Hui Su (禧壽), his elder brother from the same mother was Prince Yeongsu (永壽) At the age 5 investiture with Princedom Prince Yeoning (연잉군, 延礽君) When reign as King, he is just known as The King (Jeonha, 전하 殿下). It is treasonous to address the King by his given name When he dies, he is given a temple name (묘호, 廟號) Yeongjo (영조,英祖) & history will known him by this name Other names that Yeongjo bears Pen-name (호, 號) Yang Seong Heon (양성헌,養性軒) Courtesy name (자, 字): Gwangsuk (광숙, 光叔)
