  1. I have to say it. Something happened in my (drama fan) life; I watched (or shoud I say discovered) Coffee Prince out of the blue for the first time and as cheesy as it sounds; things will never be the same as before.. I knew it's existence because of the internet (wiki, streaming sites) but surprisingly I never watched it nor knew anything about the story. It's been 2-3 years that I started to watch k drama again after a-10-year pause (I used to watch them when I was (very) young with mom, grandma and cousins when it was shown on tv. Even though I enjoyed some but as a young boy, it never got me completely and as we emigrated to Europe, I lost in touch with k dramas ( cuz unlike in Asia, they aren't shown on tv) and I was into movies and anime. I rediscovered k drama with Goblin (whitch I enjoyed a lot ) early 2017 and started to (re)watch kdrama since then and saw many great ones (BTIMFL, Mother, Greatest Love,Mr. Sunshine, etc..)and a week ago, I suddenly decided to watch CP on a whim, I knew nothing about the story except the synopsis and OMG, it was .... incredible ! To start of with things I didn't like; I personally found the 2nd couple very uninteresting (especially HYJ whom I found cool but unnerving, annoying, sometimes all at the same time) and things happening around them. In my 2nd rewatch (yes, I rewatched CP 3 times in a week), I fast forwarded almost all of their moments (except when they're interacting with Eun Chan and Han Kyul) and they have none or so few impact on a overall story. Secondly, I found the 4 last episodes dragging and I felt strongly that many elements are "filleresque" (birth dad, HS-YJ, "2 years later") and extended alot (HK family's disagreement on his union with EC). I strongely felt that if we cut of many things of HS-YJ and crammed last 4-5 episodes into 2, I thought CP would be a masterpiece, because the rest, espcially the main couple, is by far one of the best (if not the best) things I've seen ! For a drama made in 2007, I can say that by discovering it for the 1st time in 2019 that CP took the test of time extremely well compared to the others dramas made at that time and many of them are unwatchable now. CP barely got any wrinkles in all aspects(script, directing, editing, music, acting) and still unbelieavlely modern nowadays . I think PD did an amazing job with directing; I was struck by the first images of drama (food delivery bikes on the streets on Seoul) which is very unusual and striking for a drama. It is directed with such a naturalistic style that we can almost feel the streets. The camera is always put at a right place and captures amazing images (especially EC and HK on his MINI) which resulted many defining moments that are pretty unforgettable (that surreal beach scene, CP concert, HK's acceptance to EC, chestnut trail, EC taking first moves to HK etc..), all accompanied by a fantastic music composed of many great songs. The characters are very well written, defined and developped even the smallest (and the uninteresting) ones. We got attached to all of the characters and all are incredibly human (with qualities and weaknesses) which make us even more attached to them. We remembered all of them long after; Ha Rim, Sun Ki, Min Yeop, Hong Ahjussi, Butcher Ahjussi, Moms, Eun Seo, Han Seong AND OF COURSE HAN KYUL AND EUN CHAN ! The showrunner uses usual drama tropes and rules ( poor girl -rich guy) , disguised as a shojoesque manghawa appearance to better bend and explode the boundaries to deliver one of the unique, heart warming, gender transcending love story (with one of the most memorable kiss and love declaration in drama history) I cannot not talk about Yoon Eun Hye. Without her, Eun Chan couldn't exist and without Eun Chan, there won't be Coffee Prince. She carries the whole drama on her frail shoulders and she is simply EXCEPTIONEL as Eun chan. She makes us laugh, cry, sad, happy, moves us, encourages us, inspire us and makes us fall in love with her and her love towards HK. She is stunning and gives us personally one of the (if not the) the most remarkable, memorable and moving character portrayal in a rom com drama and forms with Gong Yoo one of the (if not the) most adorable, memorable, cutest couple that graced us on the screen. I knew GY as a dokkaebi, freedom fighter and zombie-fighting-father and he still impressed me again as a 29-year-old baby, a sort of Peter Pan with conflicted mind about his love and sexuality. I'm not surprised that women fall on him badly because GY is, like Brad Pitt or Hyun Bin, not only a handsome/sexy man but also an amazing actor. HK can makes you angry and seconds later makes you fall in love with him. His acting as a man conflicted and unsure with his feelings is amazing (again this unforgettable beach scene) and finally accepting his feelings towards EC transcending boundaries and loving who she is no matter the gender is simply unforgettable and still a milestone in dramaworld (as few as I've seen) . . Like humans, CP isn't flawless but it's it's qualities that makes CP unique and unforgettable. HK loves EC for who she is, no matter her gender or her appearance and EC loves HK for everything as well as his defaults and qualities. CP makes you want to fight for your dream. CP makes you believe in friendships. CP makes you believe in love. Sorry for being 12 years late to comment in ths topic. Now get me out of this drama swamp ! I'm suffering drawback syndrome and I can't pass to another drama or movie. Stuck with Han Kyul and Eun Chan...
  2. I apologize in advance for pissing on your guys' parade. I lost interest in this drama somewhere in the middle. I don't really get why Eugene and Aesin got attracted romantically , I don't get why they wanted to seperate in the middle and I don't get why they want to get together in carpe diem style after. I don't get the tsundere Dong Mae ( why did they make a big deal about haircut because it has no important consequenses what so ever at the end ). I thought Dong Mae and Eugene were going to be very interesting characters at the first episodes because of their origins and were torn between nationalities/ identites (remember the ending of episode 3 and 5 ! What a great promise.) but no, to my disappointment one become a tsundere Aesinfanboy and other become a full Joseon Aesin fanboy. ( I did'nt see Eugene do a single stuff for US ). Only Hee Sung and also (to some point) Hina lived up to my expectations. Speaking about disappointment, it broke my heart to say this but I was disappointed by Kim Tae Ri's performance. The Handmaiden's my favourite movie and I started watching because of her. Even though I have a great pleasant chance to see her twice a week through a TV screen, I thought she was not very good in it. Her range of acting and palette of emotions are quite limited. I think she as a super sniper/fighter/ flying resistance was not credible at all even in the norms of kdrama. For example, I believe Kim Go Eun as a 20 year old high school girl (who , even though irritating many times as a damsel in distress, showed a wide range of acting/emotional palette and moved me many times ) more than KTR as a super fighter/sniper. I picked Goblin because that's another KES drama with another rising actress as female lead even though these 2 drama have 2 completely different universe so not very comparable. Yeah i see they make an independent, modern, strong woman (like in secret garden) fighter and these are very good intentions but the final result appears to me like a hard headed annoying Mary Sue. Maybe she just started acting recently so her shoulders are not big enough to carry a big role (even though she was extraordinary in Handmaiden and very good in Little forest, Moon Young) or in acting she was not directed as good as in Handmaiden (Park Chan Wook's not a mere somebody) I still think she'll be a A list actress star one day. I thoght Goblin has, even though it's a wondeeful drama very long episodes filled with boring and unnecessay filler moments and thought It would be an exceptionel drama if the episodes are 20 minutes shorter with 2-3 less episodes. And boy, was I unpleasantly surprised to find that in this drama, it's goblin times 2 (more filler, more episodes). I still watch the drama because of an exceptionel production value ( 40 million bucks !! ) and superb mise en scene (Lee Eun Bok what a genius even though I think he abused the "characters starring each other with watery eyes for a very long moment with an OST behind" a little too much) and beause of Wan Ik,a very twisted and interesting character ( but not fully exploited in my opinon after how he ended at the end) we love to hate. I swear I was about to drop this drama and boom ! Takashi Mori arrives ! What an entry ! Talking about an agent of choas ! That's exactly what's missing in this drama; a great mean vilian, even more menacing presence that Wan ik (for example, if Wan Ik was Loki, Mori would be Thanos). Without him, I would have dropped this drama with their uncomprehensible on/off between the main couple. Hope they don't kill him off too soon. I think the japanese portrayal, unfortunately like 99% of kdrama/movies, very caricatural. Everyone is mean, blood thirsty beast and not nuanced. I thought it would be more like in melville's army of shadows or Rogue one and it's more telenovela/ soap opera than Melville. A very high budgeted soap opera. I thought I'll something like James Clavell's Shogun or etc. but I guess I was wrong. I forgot I was watching a kdrama. Guess I overestimated KES. (I fogot she made Heirs and DOTS). I think she the JJ Abrams of Drama. Always high concept ideas, great popular success commercially and critic backlash some period after the good intial reception. All that just to say that I was sad because I expected alot in this drama and I was disappointed. Sorry ! T
  3. Yes. That's her ! Thank you very much. I knew i've seen her but couldn't remember her name.
  4. Can someone know the name of the actress who plays Mr. Kim's girlfriend ? I've seen her in some drama/movies but I can't remember her name. I started this drama by accident and boy, did I make a right choice !! It's so much fun, comfortable and easy to watch and the word "healing " has never deserved it's name more than it does with this drama. Sure, there are some long and uninteresting stuff (DY's office stuff, Sana's business ..) that I tend to accelerate but the core of the drama is so warm, friendly and comfortable that's it's alaways a pleasure to follow these 4 girls + Mr. Kim daily adventures. I started this drama saturday, binge-watched it and now I caught up with the drama. My wednesday- Thursday have become more enchanting thanks to Mr Kim and these 4 girls.
  5. I've been follwing this drama since it's 1st week, mainly because I'm a big fan of KIm Taeri since the Handmaiden (probably my favorite movie for now) and I really liked Goblin (especially the directing, this PD has a incredible sense of mise en scene), not really a fan of KES . I've, as expected, been pretty mesmerized by the scale of production design/value (it's really good to have 2 1 hour movie to watch each weekend) and you can see almost every penny on the screen (expect for those which went into LBH's account ) and the PD, once again, do wonder things with his directing, with many memorable scenes (the latest would be the ending of episode 5 so sensual, moving and intriging) Not to mention the great casting (major lead roles are perfectly cast). But unfortunely, these very positive things hide a storytelling which is pretty average and not so engaging and inventive as we are supposed to feel and our feeling have been, to an extent influenced, by the amazing performences (not a great surprise from these actors) and an incredible mise en scene and I think theses factors are the trees that hide the forest for the story which seems not as brillant as the acting and directing suggest . But even said that, I enjoyed a lot in front of Mr Sunshine and looking forward each weekend. It's a real treat for the eyes and ears, not so much for the heart for now (a little bit because of seeing KTR every week for me ). For now, (even if they're a different genre to compare) even it's a pleasure to watch, it neither has Mother's emotional rush, Goblin's melancholy nor the brillance writing of Because this is my first Life at the same stage, to compare with my favorite dramas. We can rarely judge the drama from the first seven episodes (even though I dropped many dramas by watching a lesser no. of first episodes) but I can't help but feeling that way. Maybe because I'm a male and I'm more a movie fan than Kdramas but that's my impression. For the last episode, according to the flashforwards, I guess, at the end, Ae Shin will leave Japanese occupied Joseon and reunite with Eugene abroad while continuing her fight, Understand Dong Mae (my YYS T_T) and make peace with him , and Hui Seong will end up dead for Ae Shin ( my BYH T_T) who 'ill mourn for him. That's whay make me think by seeing the flashforwards.

    [Drama 2018] Mother, 마더

Mother is Chung Seo-kyung's first drama but she was co-writer of all Park Chan Wook's movies since Lady Vengeance (except Stoker), I'm a cyborg, Thirst and recently The Handmaiden (which is probably my favorite movie of ALL TIME) who just won BAFTA for best foreign language film. These scripts are wriiten by four hands (she and PCW together) but you can see her influence through the strong independant female figures who started to rise in PCW's filmography. As a male movie fan and an occasional kdrama viewer (I'm more kmovie fan than drama but I really loved Goblin or Because this is my first life), I hesitated to express my opinion because I'm not supposed to be the main audience addressed but anyway ... I was intrigued by this project because of the writer, synopsis, LBY and themes and I've been mesmerized and very moved from the 1st to last episode. I felt like I was watching a 16h movie (didn't mean not to look down on drama format) because I was so impressed by the mise en scene (clever choice to use 2:35 beautifully used instead of usual 1:85 tv format) , the music, the editing (severals unforgettable sequences throughout the drama), and the acting: all the actors are extraordinary, 2 moms, monster couple, the great LBY and of course Heo Yool. Last time I saw the kid actor as brillant and phenomenal as she was Haley Joel Osment in 6th sense ( some part of Dafne Keen in Logan). She can express so much emotions with such a natural acting , to show her fragility, strength, sadness, happiness , sometimes all at the same time.. with such a natural and easiness that it is very troubling. I bet that in 8-10 years time, she will become an great actress (if she hasn't already been one) like the future Jeon do yeon or Kim Go Eun. The script is formidably written with storyline tightly constructed with almost no fillers ( I sense it a little in ep 15) and never forgetting the character developpement for each and every character even the smallest ones (young cop for exemple). Mother is a perfect title for this story because we see many types of mother ( Soo Jin, Young Shin, Hong Hee, Ja young) and the writer gives life to all of them perfectly. We witness all of their journey through their beliefs and doubts, weakness and stength. The writer's never afraid of the main thematic : child abuse; other writers will try to avoid or diminish to please all audience but no ! Chung's got more cojones than everyone; she sticks to the main themes, never stray from them, never try to avoid the violence to please the crowd and looks staight into it. It is of course terrifying but the most terrifying is that these cases aren't even fiction and they happen in real life in front of our eyes ! Sometimes we try to ignore it when seeing it on news but that's the inevitable and horrible truth. Child abuse exists and we need to look straight into it to understand and make people aware of the causes and consequences. There are so many memorable moments (sadness, suspense or cliffhangers) in every single episode which is very impressive and rare for a drama. I'm not the person who get his eyes tear up easily (even though it happens more and more nowadays) but I think every episode made my eyes teared up more or less and so moved by the characters (especially Soo Jin and Yoon Book which are all reliable, even the monstrous ones (I can sort of understand how they became like this even if i can't forgive what they did) . There are moments where I was so heartbroken (flashbacks of granny finger, end of episode 1,13 and 14) like i've never felt before a drama which shows the accomplishment of the writer's job I can easily say that this is my favorite drama so far. I smiled, I cried, i was moved, feared, mad. I was lucky and glad to follow the adventure and love story of these 2 beautiful souls. I was moved to see that bond of heart are as strong as (if not stronger at this case) bond of blood, one who just gave birth to a child isn't enough to call herself a mother and what it takes to become one,. I will cherish this drama with all my heart .
