[Drama 2018] The Third Charm, 제3의 매력

The Third Charm: Series Review For my inaugural post in this new blog, I have decided to do a series review of this realistic romance drama starring Seo Kang-joon and Esom. I was really looking forward to this show ever since the casting news was confirmed. It was not promoted as a romantic comedy, but somehow it made me hopeful to see Kang-joon and Esom flex their rom com muscles in this project. Never did I expect that the “comedy” I was hoping for was a tragedy in the making. THE FIRST CHARM The drama started during their early college years. On Joon-young (Seo Kang-joon) is a straight-A Chemistry student who lives a very systematic life, and writes down all his achievements in a portfolio. His parents work in the academe. He cooks for the family, and cleans the house during his free time. He is not your typical as he is not a loner in school. He has his own set of friends who brings him to blind dates. The heroine Lee Young-jae (Esom) is a hardworking part-timer at a beauty salon, who dreams of becoming a professional hairstylist some day. Her older brother Soo-jae (Yang Dong-geun) is his only family left because their parents died when Young-jae was just a baby. Since Young-jae doesn’t have the means to go to college, she balances her time working at the salon while studying a vocational course in hair-styling. Nothing can stop Young-jae from chasing her dream. After a not-so pleasant first meeting and a roller coaster of events, the main couple got together eventually. Joon-young thought Young-jae was also a college student when he met her during a group blind date. Even though Young-jae’s background didn’t really bother Joon-young, the poor heroine still did not want him to know. But then, as if it’s a premonition that this relationship would be doomed until the end, Joon-young and Young-jae broke up just a day after they officially became a couple. Joon-young was devastated after Young-jae asked him to break up with her. He thought this was because of a simple misunderstanding at the department party wherein Young-jae’s petty secret was revealed by another petty individual. It was revealed later on that Seo-jae met an accident which caused his legs to be paralyzed, and made Young-jae the family’s breadwinner overnight. She didn’t tell Joon-young about any of this, until they met again in their mid-20s. What I liked about this first charm was how the story depicted Joon-young to be the grand youngster with a plan but no definite dream, and Young-jae as the persevering orphan with big dreams but no elaborate plan. But then, the drama seems like it’s really in the mood to toy with us because the systematic Joon-young dropped out of university and enrolled in police academy. When everyone thought he is out to become the next great chemist, he entered the police force and evolved into a tough criminal chaser – a far cry from what everyone imagined him to be. THE SECOND CHARM This is where the show picked up: the year 2013. After clearing out their seven years worth of misunderstanding, Joon-young and Young-jae gave their love another chance. Joon-young is now the team leader of a violent crimes unit, while Young-jae works as a head stylist in a premiere salon. And since they are making up for lost times, the couple is almost always inseparable. This is my favorite stage of their relationship… the honeymoon phase. Joon-young and Young-jae are all lovey dovey with the countless skinship and kiss scenes. Joon-young’s tantrums. Their cute kiss and make-up moments. The admirable yet sometimes poignant scenes with Soo-jae. This is the drama’s saving grace for me. It’s what convinced me to continue watching just when I was about to drop it. But here comes the formidable forces that eventually led to Joon-young and Young-jae’s break-up: jealousy, insecurity, and lost of self-love. The couple’s second charm introduced us to Choi Ho-chul (Min Wook-hyuk), the persistent (borderline annoying) dermatologist who hits on Young-jae whenever he could; and Min Se-eun (Kim Yoon-hye), the rookie police officer who has crazy similarities with Joon-young. I kept thinking while watching Young-jae and Joon-young’s honeymoon phase – how on earth would their relationship gets shaken up when they seemed to be head over heels in love with each other? But then I realized that where lies the problem: both of them are so in love with each other that they lost their sense of individuality. They got caught up by their own love without building a strong foundation of self-love. Joon-young was constantly anxious about Young-jae and Ho-chul’s non-existent relationship, and Young-jae could not bear the pressure of being in a relationship. It did not help that she also saw how Joon-young seemed to click with Se-eun. All the emotional pain piled up that the relationship couldn’t be saved anymore. 4. K-drama Reaction: 100 Days My Prince | Series Review Days after this drama would surely be uncomfortable #ManCrushMonday Yi Yul (EXO DO /Do Kyung-soo) wasn’t supposed to be the crown prince. His family was content with their simple life out of the palace. But greedy elders need to use a royal blood to fulfill their desirous plan. They planned a coup to replace the king and Yi Yul’s life turned to be an uncomfortable one. He had to stay in the lonely confines of the palace. The once playful and cheerful kid grew up as the stoic and cold crown prince (which confusingly is popular with modern-day fangirls kekeke). Anyway, the introduction of this series was really melodramatic that I didn’t expect the middle arc will have a 180-degree-turn in terms of atmosphere. #TransformationTuesday From the regal and pompous crown prince, Yi Yul suddenly became the poor and still-a-bit-haughty Na Won-deuk. His naiveté due to his amnesia resulted in a lot of is-he-a-pabo? comical antics, which are really different from the atmosphere set by the introductory episodes. I’ve already seen a lot of funny scenes involving a Joseon-royal-pretending -to-be-a-commoner in the past (hi Moonlight Drawn By Clouds Crown Prince!!!) but the hilarity of Won-deuk’s scenes is due to his innocence of his past. He doesn’t have any idea who he was but he still acts like a noble in plain clothes. His love for silk and pearl cabinet was supposed to be a hint of his past lifestyle but everyone around him thinks he is just naïve and dumb. I think the 100 days of Won-deuk stayed true to its romantic-comedy theme. The fake-relationship plot was really executed well. #WomanCrushWednesday The other half of this adorable fake Joseon couple is the street-smart Yoon Yi-seo/Hong Shim (Nam Ji-hyun). I’ve fallen in love with her after her very real talk about marriage and her relatable complaints about being single (haha). But she totally got me when she stood up for her friends and family. She may have some damsel-in-distress moments but she knew how to rescue herself and her man. FULL with pics: https://ahjummamshies.com/2018/11/06/k-drama-reaction-100-days-my-prince-series-review/
  5. K-Drama Reaction: My ID is Gangnam Beauty | Series Review I was already used to quirky over-the-top plots of webtoon-based dramas that I thought My ID is Gangnam Beautywould be another series filled with overzealous characters and out-of-this-world conflicts. The story of a girl who was bullied in middle school and underwent plastic surgery to have a fresh start in college might sound different but as it turned out Kang Mi-rae’s story is something we already knew; not because it was a cliché plot but because we have experienced it one way or another. Kang Mi-rae (Im Soo-hyang) has been ostracized for her “ugly” face. The bullying and denigration she received might have been caused by childish behaviors of her classmates but it wounded her deeply. She decided to have a full-face plastic surgery because she thought she will be accepted and loved by following society’s standard of beauty. It took her a while before she realized that being pretty doesn’t equate to being happy. Mi-rae had to meet Hyun Soo-ah (Jo Woo-ri) and Do Kyeong-seok (Cha Eun-woo) to realize that even beautiful creatures have hidden scars. [Drama 2018] Life 라이프

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: LIFE, THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN, RISKY ROMANCE, WITCH’S LOVE, YOUR HONOR, TIME What’s It About? This drama is about the power struggle within a hospital following a suspicious death of a senior medical staff. The Good The greatest strength of the pilot episode which was actually the one that kept the plot moving is the mystery around the suspicious death of senior hospital staff Lee Bo-hoon (Chun Ho-jin) who’s known for his good ethics. The incident triggered a lot of tension between the staff who have warring values and views but it’s a matter of time before we can tell who the good guys are and who are not. The two lead actors, Lee Dong-wook and Jo Seung-woo both have a very strong screen presence playing an ER department doctor and the hospital’s new chief, respectively and these two completely look like they are neither good nor bad characters and I’m definitely excited to see a showdown between them. There is a myriad of supporting characters but it’s Ye Seon-woo (Lee Kyu-hyung) I found really intriguing. I wonder what the writer wants to tell ask by having him pops in and out Ye Jin-woo (Lee Dong-wook)’s head in a lot of scenes. It’s actually a little creepy. The Bad The pilot episode introduced a lot of characters in one swoop that it’s quite difficult to remember everyone. Add to the problem a complex narrative, then you’ll see yourself rewatching some of the scenes to understand what they’ve actually said and what was really going on. 7. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: LIFE, THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN, RISKY ROMANCE, WITCH’S LOVE, YOUR HONOR, TIME What’s It About? It’s about the romantic story between warm and understanding neurosurgeon Han Seung-joo who turned into a hot-headed person after the death of a close friend and the hormones-obsessed endocrinologist Joo In-ah who can’t help but feel intrigued towards his case. The Good I had the lowest expectations for this drama so I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it so much thanks to the excellent acting of Lee Si-young and Ji Hyun-woo as two totally different doctors who found themselves intertwined with one another. I found myself cheering for In-ah while watching the show as she tried to do everything to find out what happened to Han Seung-joo who had a 360-degree transformation after a car accident. I also have my suspicions that the reason Seung-joo has a picture of In-ah could either be they’re a couple or that he harbors a crush on her. And wouldn’t it be exciting that as he tries to unravel the truth about In-ah whom he thinks the one who caused his best friend tragic heartbreak, he’ll find himself more and more drawn to her and realized that she’s actually someone that he really likes? I guess I’m going overboard with my theories. The Bad The romance in this drama has the potential to be really fun but I’m just concerned about how this simple kind of a plot will pan out without being repetitive and boring for the rest of its run. [Drama 2018] Witch's Love, 마녀의 사랑

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: LIFE, THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN, RISKY ROMANCE, WITCH’S LOVE, YOUR HONOR, TIME What’s It About? It tells the stories of modern-day witches as they explore romance. The Good There’s not much I really like about this drama aside from the fact that somehow Yoon So-hee has finally got a likable character as the girly and sweet witch Kang Cho-hong. If you are a sucker for a romantic comedy, then this could be one in your long list. The Bad The pilot episode has failed to deliver a magical world that would lure you to keep watching the series. It’s like a fantasy book you read to your kids and by that I mean, grown-ups would find this one too childish and petty. Hyun Woo who’s already 33 still looks like a young boy forced to dress up like a grown-up and act as one. I never thought looking cute could ever become a problem. The restaurant owner who’s bugging our three witches is very annoying. [Drama 2018] Time, 시간

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: LIFE, THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN, RISKY ROMANCE, WITCH’S LOVE, YOUR HONOR, TIME What’s It About? This drama is about the story of a terminally ill man who will do everything to help the woman whose life he ruined. The Good This drama was a little marred with controversy when its leading actor Kim Jung-hyun demonstrated cold behavior during their press junket. His agency was quick to apologize and reasoned out that the actor was deeply affected by his character who in the drama only has days to live. I didn’t buy that alibi but after watching the pilot episode, I somehow understood where Kim Jung-hyun was coming from. His character who’s living life without any real direction has to suddenly face the fact that his days are numbered. His character had to go through a rollercoaster of emotions dealing with the tragic truth and this actor excellently played it out for cameras. Another worthy of attention is Seohyun’s so much improved acting. Like Kim Jung-hyun, Seohyun has a lot of emotionally charged scenes where she had to wail out loud like when the time she has found out about her sister’s death. The drama has a very heavy theme but it’s not hard to watch. I also very like the sharp and moody cinematography used in it that prevents it from feeling outdated. The Bad The character sketches are very similar to the 2013 sleeper hit Secret which catapulted Hwang Jung-eum and Ji Sung back to the limelight. It both has an impoverished heroine whose life is peppered with one tragedy after another, a hot-headed rich male lead who falls for her and an ex-boyfriend who will betray her in the series. It might be a winning recipe but it would dull out originality if the writer won’t consciously try to distinguish its story from that reference. Both dramas are penned with the same writer, by the way. Full: https://ahjummamshies.com/2018/08/17/first-impressions-life-thirty-but-seventeen-risky-romance-witchs-love-your-honor-time/
  10. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: LIFE, THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN, RISKY ROMANCE, WITCH’S LOVE, YOUR HONOR, TIME What’s It About? It’s about a troublemaker who gets caught up in a situation where has to pose as his identical twin brother who’s a courtroom judge. The Good There are a lot of good things that can be said about this drama. It has an engaging zero-to-hero storyline, interesting characters, great acting, and a fast-paced plot. The dynamics between trouble magnet Han Soo-ho (Yoon Si-yoon) and his mother (Kim Hye-ok) is the one that really hit me hard. They definitely love each another but somehow they got lost in translation. You can easily sympathize with Soo-ho who harbors resentment towards his mother because she has always favored his twin brother over him even if he’s in the wrong. But you cannot also help but pity the old lady who singlehandedly raised her children but got no love from them in return. The story of Song So-eun (Lee Yoo-young) and her struggle to fight sexual harassment during her internship is also a reason to watch the pilot episode of this drama. She may appear very vulnerable but I was pleasantly surprised when she called out his senior for sexually assaulting her even if it’s a downhill battle for her.
