[Drama 2018-2019] SKY Castle, SKY 캐슬

Finished. That was truly satisfying and heartwarming. I was a little worried what they would show here since the climax unraveled in episode 19, but, this was good too. This show isn’t a whodunnit and the characters have been remarkably consistent from start to finish - consistently human and imperfect - so I don’t know why people were expecting a twist. The murder mystery was basically all wrapped up by episode 18. This episode was Kwak Mi Hyang confronting herself in Kim Joo Young. Seeing what she could have become if she continued down that path, and firmly rejecting it. Her character has “turned” round the bend completely. @chickfactor good to see you here. Would love to hear your thoughts when you’re done. Would have loved to write more but I’ve been so tied up with work and family and writing obligations. Sky Castle was memorable for me because it made me think about myself as a mother at every turn. The most heartwrenching part for me was how Kay has internalized her reaction to her mother crying - it’s an emotional trigger that catalyze her worst fear: losing her mother’s love. I had a difficult day at work today. And when I came home, the kids just wouldn’t listen to what I said. I knew I sounded irritable and annoyed, but I couldn’t help it. And I remembered how my mom used to lose her temper and I hated myself for being that way. Moms get tired. Moms get frustrated. But you know what? Kids are incredibly attuned to their mother’s emotions too. They probably sensed my negative vibes. This show reminded me that more than anything, kids crave their mother’s love and acceptance. At least for now (until the teenage years haha), I am their world. I can’t forget the look on my son’s face as I flared up. And instantly Kay’s face came to mind .... tonight I sleep, tomorrow I try to be a better mom. Goodnight all. It’s been a great ride.
  2. I hate to make the comparison, but does anyone else see the similarities? James’s new hero Maxim inherits his family’s noble title after a tragedy. “It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face,” said Arrow. “But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name.” https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/jan/24/el-james-returns-with-passionate-new-romance-the-mister

We’re heading into the final stretch now...and everything is starting to unravel. I actually found episodes 17 and 18 a little slow. Yesterday was Yeh Suh’s awakening, today it’s Kang Joon Sang... But I like how his story, and his relationship with his mother unraveled. Sometime back I read a study of university students in Singapore (where I’m from) and students expressed sadness that “my parents only like the child who gets good grades, they don’t love me for who I am.” And for Kang Joon Sang to say That broke me. That was just heartbreaking. The writer’s message to all the helicopter parents out there is clear—do we want our kids to say this to us in the future? As Kang Joon Sang said to his mom in ep 17: “I’m almost 50, and I don’t even know how to live my life because of you.” P.S. in answer to my question last night, how many of you would be willing to sacrifice your child’s future? I saw some Korean forum articles about this. And the sad thing is, most people said they would choose to do exactly what Kwak Mi Hyang is doing - to protect their child’s future.

[Drama 2018-2019] SKY Castle, SKY 캐슬

Just finished 17 and wow! This show continues to surprise. Just a few initial thoughts: - the central character arc driving this show is Kwak Min Hyang (pronounced kwang, so it doesn’t really rhyme with Quack, hehe) - and the central question here is: Can she find her conscience and redeem herself? - it turns out, Yeh Suh might be the first to break. Yeh Suh, the one she trained to live without empathy or compassion for others, is starting to realize she’s lived her entire life wrong. - From Day 1 she is a woman without scruples, manipulative and willing to put up with anything for her daughter’s success. - But one by one, over and over again, her beliefs are challenged. By the death of her friend, the return of Soo Im her friend from childhood, her admission to the public about her past - But then the choice becomes sacrificing her daughter’s future (everything she has worked for the past eighteen years) or living with her guilty conscience for the rest of her life. Or as the preview says, her life or her daughter’s life. What will she choose? What a question!!!! Would you sacrifice your child’s future if that meant doing the right thing? Or would you knowingly do something bad/wrong just to protect your child? One minor quibble. I know Yeh Suh is moved by her love for Woo Joo, but I thought the transition from her hopelessly infatuated with Coach Kim Joo Young, to suspecting her was a bit abrupt. It would have been nice to show more of her loss of innocence. Fascinating character, especially when paralleled against her mom!

I think the dashboard cam is from the killer’s car. And they doctored the video, editing out the killer and jumping straight to the moment where Woo Joo with his bright red sweater leaned out of the balcony. Now my question is, how did the killer slip in and out unnoticed?

[Drama 2018-2019] SKY Castle, SKY 캐슬

HAHAHAHAHAHA I agree!! Episode 12 was...daebak. This show pulls no punches. My heart was in my throat. Not makjang at all. Yeh Suh Omma is having her awakening, now that her daughter is for the first time pulling away from her - that's what parenting a teenager is like, isn't it? Even at 20 episodes, it isn't dragging anything out. I'm guessing the scenes they added were Kang Joo Sang's hospital cronyism and the doctors' antics. Oh Nara is a star and I'm so glad she's being given the chance to shine. I think besides Woo Joo's mom she's the mom most honest with her feelings. And her son's line killed me. I have a feeling there's more to Kim Joo Young...so my hubby was right about her faking her connection to Yeon Du...but...how is she getting her whole troupe of trainers to follow her? Just because she's paying them well? Intriguing and I sure hope the show doesn't make her out to be a one-dimensional villain. And I wonder if Yeh Suh or Woo Joo's mom will be the one to find out about Kay. Writers often insert themselves in the story somehow and I think that's Woo Joo's mom, the truth seeker - who isn't always the wisest and is sometimes even manipulated, but eventually breaks through to the truth. I'm glad all the moms, one by one, are having their own "awakening" to the consequences of their actions. It's gift to all of us is it makes us think and reflect on our own actions as parents/kids too. Can't wait for more!!

I have a question!! so, I got my husband addicted on Sky Castle as well and we just finished 10 together. And we have completely different guesses about Kim Young Joo and Yeon Doo’s connection. My guess: Yeon Doo is actually Kay, the secret daughter Coach is hiding in a “sky castle” Hubby: that’s not possible. Yeon Du has older siblings. And she’s dead. I think Coach is just making up the story about her link to her to fool Woo Joo’s mom. Also, what’s your guess on why Coach is pushing Hyena to the Kang family? Is she trying to concoct an explosion? Your guess???

Ahhhh I can't believe I stayed up this late to catch up on all the episodes.....finally watched till ep 9 and I take back my words. This show has captured both my head and heart. Yeondu's story, and Woo Joo's mom's connection to her, that stole my heart. I can't believe how well this show has captured all the tiny psychological nuances, including how Kang Joon Sang and Han Seo Jin, the ones at the top of the pyramid, outwardly pretend to be the most humble, forgiving and generous people on earth, the ones who always have to say the right sounding things. And I love how the other two ladies Jin Jin and particularly Seung Hye seem to be finally growing a spine (ahem ahem!) to all the Sky Castle nonsense. Loving every minute! Resisting the urge to peek at ep 10...but I might just...! edit: So I’m in the middle of 10 now and it’s just struck me. The REAL Sky Castle isn’t Sky Castle. It’s the house where Coach has imprisoned her daughter Yeon Du. And Su Im’s real purpose in the story is to free her.

[Drama 2018-2019] SKY Castle, SKY 캐슬

I'm somewhere in the middle of episode 5 now, and I'm liking it but it hasn't seized my heart like My Ahjussi. It's gone for my head, rather than my heart, which is also how I felt about Misty ie its extremely thought provoking and interesting, but I'm not shedding tears for anyone yet. I am pumping my fist though! I actually recognise many of the characters here...guess I've been watching K drama for too long...LOL Lee Tae Ran is the cram school head from Ahn Pan Seok's A Wife's Dignity. I thought she did a fantastic job there and I'm glad she's been given this role which is much brighter and seems to suit her personality. Speaking of which, this drama and the whole Daechi-dong business (famous cram school district) reminds me a lot more of A Wife's Dignity than Heard it Through the Grapevine, although the former was more of a love story. Oh Nara is Jeong Hee from My Ahjussi! Kim Seo Hyung is Myung Hee from The Good Wife (she was fantastic there and so much better than that awful role in the Great Seducer which was...the most painful drama to watch ever) Jeong Jun Ho (Ye Suh and Yeh Bin's father) was in IRIS and Queen of Reversals, both huge hits which I plan to but haven't watched Kim Byung Chul - oh come on everyone has seen him before I remember him in Descendents of The Sun (flakey commander), oh wow he was also in Love in the Moonlight, Goblin, Mr Sunshine Jo Jae Yun is someone else we all know also - he was also in DOTS (the corrupt businessman I think) and I also saw him in Liar's Game and more recently in the Ma Dong Sun movie Outlaws! Not forgetting the famous mother in law Jung Aeri! Most recently in Bab Noona, Temperature of Love, Angel Eyes and many many more...
  14. Hi everyone -waves- its been a crazy half year. I’m back because I started watching sky castle. And also finally have a bit of reprieve from work and family and writing obligations. ive been checking in every now and then and glad to see everyone still sharing in the Ahjussi love and @sadiesmith and @widala especially still going strong. @riazni as we close off the year Ahjussi remains very special in my heart, something that still continues to comfort and give me strength today.

OMG what did I just watch? (bear with me here, I’m catching up) couldn't wait for the hubby so started watching episode 1 tonight. I love how each character is real and not just put in there for the sake of furthering the plot, that’s a sign the writer has really spent a lot of time with his/her characters, it feels like each one even the minor ones has a story to tell. I could sense I was in the hands of a skilled writer. I did think the build up was a bit slow, but i could sense something big and drastic was coming. But boy did i not expect the ending. It had me shook. My heart leapt to my throat and it’s still there now. PS oh and I recognized so many fantastic older actors who would otherwise just be part of a supporting cast or minor role. What a solid cast. Love! @sadiesmith @h2ogirl come come watch with me! @40somethingahjumma @chickfactor @oldschooler This might be up your alley too

[Drama 2018-2019] SKY Castle, SKY 캐슬

Helloooooo everybody!!!! It’s been a looong time! I broke my Soompi fast to come back and post here, because I’ve been hearing so much about Sky Castle from my Korean friends. And I come here and see @jongski, @Wotad and @africandramalover? It’s a party! (are you kidding there’s a drama cooler than My Ahjussi this year?) I actually haven’t watched anything but i read some of your posts and my Korean friends keep telling me to watch...so I’m going to get started! And I’ll be back! (I haven’t watched any drama in full since My Ahjussi, just bits here and there, but everything so far has sucked...so am really glad to finally have another mature drama! With mature actors—yes! And Oh Nara I’ve missed you!!)
  17. My first time starting a topic...please do let me know if I did anything wrong Why is there no topic yet for this gorgeous new film starring this beautiful man? Acclaimed filmmaker Lee Chang Dong's first film in eight years, it's in competition for the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year. Burning is based on Murakami Haruki's short story, Barn Burning. Now to find a copy of the short story...
  18. You’re kidding! Golden life was sh—(expletive which will not be uttered). It started out well then descended into makjang melo.
  19. Welcome!! And thank you! This is such a beautiful song. I actually thought the lyrics seemed more fitting for Ji An, who’s felt unwanted most of her life: At Seventeen Janis Ian I learned the truth at seventeen That love was meant for beauty queens And high school girls with clear skinned smiles Who married young and then retired The valentines I never knew The Friday night charades of youth Were spent on one more beautiful At seventeen I learned the truth And those of us with ravaged faces Lacking in the social graces Desperately remained at home Inventing lovers on the phone Who called to say "come dance with me" And murmured vague obscenities It isn't all it seems at seventeen A brown eyed girl in hand me downs Whose name I never could pronounce Said: "pity please the ones who serve They only get what they deserve" The rich relationed hometown queen Marries into what she needs With a guarantee of company And haven for the elderly So remember those who win the game Lose the love they sought to gain In debitures of quality and dubious integrity Their small-town eyes will gape at you In dull surprise when payment due Exceeds accounts received at seventeen To those of us who knew the pain Of valentines that never came And those whose names were never called When choosing sides for basketball It was long ago and far away The world was younger than today When dreams were all they gave for free To ugly duckling girls like me... We all play the game, and when we dare We cheat ourselves at solitaire Inventing lovers on the phone Repenting other lives unknown That call and say: "come on, dance with me" And murmur vague obscenities At ugly girls like me, at seventeen
  20. The scenes go with the voiceover from Dong Hoon’s flashback. “After twenty years together...I don’t know what to do.” The sleeping guys represent Dong Hoon’s state of mind before meeting Ji An, his state of mind in his marriage. Inactive and just going along for the ride. But Ji An’s love for him woke him up, and that is the way out of his twenty something year long slumber.
  21. So instead of watching another Korean drama I went back to watch one of my favourites, In the Mood For Love. And more than ever, I'm convinced that Oh Hae Young / PD Kim were inspired by In the Mood For Love. What is the one memento that Chow Mo Wan keeps to remind him of Su Li Zhen? The one 'love gift' PD Kim uses in his shows? Her slippers. Left in his room while she was "trapped" by the arrival of outside guests for an all-night mahjong session. Many years later, after they part, she somehow finds her way to Singapore where he has moved, and ends up in his room. Chow returns and the room is empty - but he knows someone has called. He sees a single lit cigarette still burning on an ashtray and starts searching his room--the slippers are nowhere to be found. It's been a couple of years since I watched the show, maybe even a decade, and watching it again--this truly is a masterpiece. My Ahjussi reminded me so much of the feelings I experienced watching In the Mood for Love and I wanted to watch it again to remember why. Here's another memorable scene with parallels to My Ahjussi. While Chow and Su have been meeting over dinner, discussing writing, books, they each keep reminding themselves they are different from their cheating spouses. They will not even go anywhere near the line. But this moment, three quarters in, Chow's mask falls away: Here's the particular dialogue. Tony Leung - Chow Mo Wan, Maggie Cheung - Su Li Zhen. SLZ: You looked for me? CMW: I thought your colleague didn't pass my message. I wanted to buy a boat ticket. SLZ: You have to go somewhere? CMW: Ah Beng sent me many letters. He doesn't have enough people, he wants me to go over and help. SLZ: How long are you planning to go? CMW: I don't know. Let's see when I get there. SLZ: Why did you suddenly think of going to Singapore? (Dong Hoon: Why do you have to go that far?) CMW: I want a change of environment ... rather than listen to everyone talk (about us) (Ji An: I want to try and live as a different person & Ji An in the phone booth scene: Why, so they can throw a farewell party for a murderer?") SLZ: It's fine as long as we know nothing happened. CMW: That's what I thought as well before...that's why I wasn't scared about what people said. I believed I wouldn't be like them ... but I was. (pause) I know you won't leave your husband. I want to go away for a while. (Ji An: A person who can be happy without me has no attraction to me & Ji An: I didn't want to be lingering around like a fool hoping to catch a glimpse of you) SLZ: I didn't think you would really like me. CMW: I didn't think of it either. (pause) Back then we kept wondering how they started. Now I know. It turns out a lot of things are like that. I thought I would be fine...then I started to worry about what time your husband would return. Best if he didn't. I know, it's not right of me to think like that. ---- The gender roles are reversed here. Su Li Zhen (Maggie Cheung) is like Park Dong Hoon, unable to extricate herself from society's expectations of her - "I know you won't leave your husband." Ji An knows too, that Dong Hoon won't leave Yeon Hee. Not with all the rumours swirling about her and Do Joon Young and their marriage. He will stay just to prove them all wrong. And so, like Chow Mo Wan came to realise, she must go. And so to save Dong Hoon's goodness, to save the integrity of their relationship, she sacrifices herself. Just like Chow Mo Wan sacrifices himself -- so they will never, can never cross the line, and to protect Su Li Zhen's goodness. To protect her good name as a married woman.
  22. @akhenaten @ann04 I reckon it will just take time. It took six months for me and Secret Love Affair and during that time I did nothing but rewatch the show over and over again, trying to figure out its magic. I’m not able to watch anything else still, much like @ninaanin said I know from two decades of watching K Drama there ain’t going to be anything like this in a long while Seeing updates from PD Kim and Lee Seon Gyun and their new projects is bittersweet. They’ve moved on, and in time, so must we. Let me just linger a little longer... @seungshin I am still waiting eagerly to hear your thoughts! We actually picked some of our favorite posts, edited them and set up a fan site called Give Me Slippers (inspired by Piano Conversations!) and for those of you still following, I updated Contact
  23. That's just another manifestation of Dong Hoon's denial. He keeps trying to maintain a formal distance between them although his heart wants to get ever closer. And then in the end what does he say? "Why do you have to go that far?" And what does she say later, in reply? "It was because of you, Ahjussi. That I lived for the first time." It's this push-pull, push-pull that marks all great love stories, and sucks us right in!
  24. Right there with you. The three Ms sucked all my drama energy. I started with Mother, dropped it because it was too heavy, moved on to Misty, got hooked on it, the ending dragged me under a bus and with no expectations at all started My Ahjussi...only to end up completely transformed. I will never be able to watch a drama like I did in the past again. I started watching Mother again recently...and it isn't as good as I remembered. Some of the conflicts are resolved too quickly, there's too much narration instead of letting the characters unravel the story with dramatic action, and I suspect the chase/adventure is going to take up the bulk of the last 6 episodes. I don't think those points would have been so glaringly obvious to me before My Ahjussi. And let's not get started on Mr Sunshine...(I haven't yet )
  25. Haha I’m so glad you learnt to gif That, my dear is a sign of his chivalrousness...his intent to keep a distance from her no matter what
