Park Bo-young, Lee Kwang-soo, Lee Chun-hee headline Mutantby javabeans leekwangsoo_21a.jpg

I’m not quite sure whether this movie is going to be light, serious, or mysterious, but in any case a movie called Mutant is sure going to capture my attention. And with this casting, I’m hoping that the mutant idea is executed skillfully, as the project has now tapped Park Bo-young (Wolf Boy), Lee Kwang-soo (It’s Okay, It’s Love) and Lee Chun-hee (Dating Agency Cyrano) to lead.

In the story, Lee Chun-hee plays a graduate of a university from the sticks who aspires to become a reporter. He hears of a strange internet story that claims that a girl’s boyfriend transforms into a fish, and sets out to find the truth behind it. Lee Kwang-soo is the fish-boy, and Park Bo-young plays the girl who writes about his story online and thus gets called “Fish Girl.”

When you tell me Kwang-soo is playing a part-fish, part-man character I’m going to immediately laugh at the image, but the project won’t be comedic; rather, it’s described as being a social critique, which puts me much more in the mind of The Host. Of course, in that movie the mutant wasn’t the protagonist, but it did open the door for some social commentary that didn’t feel too heavy-handed since the character relationships and action sequences carried the film.

A film ‘Collective Invention’ with Lee Kwang-soo, Lee Chun-hee, and Park Bo-young to go to Toronto International Film Festival

A film ‘Collective Invention’ with Lee Kwang-soo, Lee Chun-hee, and Park Bo-young to go to Toronto International Film Festival

A film ‘Collective Invention’ depicting a human fish was officially invited to the 40th Toronto International Film Festival

‘Collective Invention’ describes how a man Park Gu (Lee Kwang-soo), who turned into a human fish due to the side effect of a new drug, becomes a rising star and falls down by a plot of the drug company. An actor Lee Kwang-soo is expected to show a very unique character never shown in Korean films. Also, Lee Chun-hee and Park Bo-young joined, so the film is much expected.

Director Kwon Oh-kwang wrote ‘Safe’, the first Korean film to receive the Palm d’Or for short film at Cannes International Film Festival. It is announced that his first long film ‘Collective Invention’ was officially invited to the vanguard section of the 40th Toronto International Film Festival.

Giovanna Fulvi, Asian film programmer of Toronto International Film Festival, said why the film is invited, “‘Collective Invention’ is a hilarious social satire about a hapless mutant’s meteoric rise to celebrity — and subsequent fall from grace — ‘Collective Invention’ examines how popular culture operates by its own capricious logic and is the hugely inventive feature debut from Kwon Oh-kwang, a new talent to watch out for in the vast panorama of South Korean cinema”.

Meanwhile, ‘Collective Invention’ will be released later this year.
