~ Synopsis ~

Ji-soo, a funeral director, happens to oversee the funeral services of Jong-woo’s deceased mother. Being old friends, they are excited by the unexpected reunion, but the reality is more bitter than sweet. Jong-woo is suffering from the incurable Lou Gehrig’s disease, and Ji-soo has been through two painful divorces. Jong-woo lightheartedly asks Ji-soo to just marry him. Ji-soo is surprised by the offer, but it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea to her. She wants to start a new life with the love that is starting to grow inside her, while the fear of losing Jong-woo scares her as well. Despite the disapproval of those around her, Ji-soo still goes through with the marriage to Jong-woo. As Jong-woo’s symptoms beginning to worsen with each passing day, Jong-woo gets easily irritable as he begins to lose control over more and more parts of his body. Even though he hurts Ji-soo’s feelings, all she wants is to stay with him and cure his disease. [KOFIC]

Synopsis : The human rights situation in South Korea has certainly taken a large leap forward in the past few decades since the era of authoritarianism, but the awareness and sensitivity of the average citizen of the human rights of others is still lacking. This is why the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) asked six acclaimed directors who have shown an interest in human rights in their work to each shoot a short film dealing with the issue of discrimination - a violation of the basic right to equality. The six directors each selected one of the various kinds of discrimination highlighted by the NHRC as problematic in Korea for the themes of their respective short films. Discrimination is a widespread problem that the public does not yet perceive clearly, but this Human Rights Film Project aims to contribute toward making this issue a significant topic of social discussion.

Ha Ji-won lends helping hand to needy through "Smile Again" Foundation

It seems like she can do it all - she goes from horror flick heroine, action star, to a demure gisaeng in the blink of an eye! Today she was the angel who reaches out to our less fortunate neighbors.

Ha Ji-won is the lady of the hour and today's actress on STAR FOCUS.

It has been some time since we've seen Ha Ji-won on the silver screen or television, but today she made an appearance at a very public event. Ha Ji-won was taking part in the celebration for the "Smile Again" Foundation, which aids low-income families, as well as the handicapped.

She's an actress with a lot to be proud about. Her productions are well-liked, as is the actress herself. But fondness for the star isn't solely based on her performances; she's also loved for her charitable actions.

Ha Ji-won told us that nothing compares to how it feels to help children.

Ha Ji-won's first movie was Truth Game, and the electrifying performance she gave brought her the honor of "Best New Actress" at the 2000 Daejong Film Awards.

The jumpstart landed her in several horror flicks - which MOST actresses would try to avoid.

Like we mentioned before, Ha Ji-won has a long list of productions and an EQUALLY long list of varying characters. She's the epitome of the "all-weather" actress - no character was too hard to handle.

But even after all that, her passion for acting and her determination to do more grows stronger day-by-day.

So we asked Ha Ji-won what type of role, or production, she was still DYING to do!

If it was "scary movies" that brought her into the limelight, it was the challenging period productions that introduced her to the world as ACTRESS Ha Ji-won.

She even took "Best Actress" at the 2007 Golden Chest Prizes for her role in one, the TV drama, Hwang Jin-i.

"Timid" is not a word in Ha Ji-won's vocabulary. She doesn't shy away from the hard action that a production requires.

Ha Ji-won played a scrappy boxer in Miracle on 1st Street, and even with all the boxing-related injuries, like getting punched in the nose(!), she didn't back down.

Whatever she does, she's always giving 100% - whether it's to share her time with the under-privileged, OR she's diving headfirst into a production!

She seems almost TOO perfect, but Ha Ji-won let us in on a secret of hers today when we asked about what she was like - the PRIVATE side of a very public figure.

There's a new role that's waiting for Ha Ji-won this summer, tentatively titled Haeundae. It's Korea's first movie about natural disasters - the tsunami, to be exact.

With a couple productions lined up for the year, what other new year's wishes could this actress have?

Sophisticated, cosmopolitan looks - and the natural charm to match!

Ha Ji-won is an actress who remains humble and generous to everyone around her.

In 2008, we wish her the best in her career, as well as the "Smile Again" project.

A Review of Korean Cinema in 2005

Jan 19 2006

* This article is for "Korean Cinema 2005" published by KOFIC in December 2005.

1. Humanism

The films released in 2005 delivered the humanism which Korean moviegoers had long yearned for. Amongst these films, <Marathon>, a film directed by Jeong Yun-cheol that created its own new sub-genre, the human drama, emerged as the front runner. This film, which tells the story of a young man with autism, who with the help of his mother and a coach, begins to train for a marathon, attracted 5 million moviegoers nationwide despite the fact that it did not showcase a dramatic story or spectacular scenes. The film < Marathon> does not criticize the reality which the disabled have to face, nor focus on the arduous path which disabled persons must take to overcome their limitations. Rather, the film describes how a child with autism grows mentally, becomes independent, and learns to communicate with other people. Audiences openly accepted the main character's heartfelt efforts, and were impressed by the film's depiction of the insignificant events which make up the reality of our daily lives.

The success of <Welcome to Dongmakgol>, which finishedon top of the box office (8 million admissions) in 2005, seems to have been based on similar circumstances. On the surface, appears to have all the attributes of a blockbuster. However, this is a film which is at its core a human story. The film tells the story of a group consisting of South Korean deserters, North Korean soldiers retreating from the front, and a member of the U.S. armed forces who survived a plane crash, that must live together in a small village in Gangwon Province. The North and South Korean soldiers soon become impressed with the pure hearts of the village people and decide to find a way to coexist. In this remote location, the soldiers are finally able to remove the ideological shackles which have long forced them to suppress their own opinions, and to see each other as human beings. These North and South Korean soldiers who are liberated from the dark ideology of hatred come to regard each other as brothers, and the U.S. soldier as an equal.

In addition to <Welcome to Dongmakgol> and <Marrying the Mafia 2>, which finished first and second respectively at the box office in 2005, there were also other films emphasizing a human aspect that fared well with audiences. Although <You are My Sunshine> directed by Park Jin-pyo has been classified as a melodrama, the love affair depicted in this film is based on the notion of humanism. AIDS is the barrier which exists between the film's two main characters: a farmer and a sex worker from the local coffee shop. Under the harsh reality of Korean society, in which a patient with AIDS is branded in a manner akin to the "scarlet letter", the only way for these lovers to consummate their relationship is forthem to first see each other as human beings. Humanism can be defined as the unconditionallove which one person feels for another, and as a love which transcends social norms and external appearances.

The unexpected success of <Mapado> can also be understood as having been based on a similar foundation. A woman who runs away with a lottery ticket and the gangsters who run after her arrive on a remote island known as Mapado. Although the gangsters must endure all kinds of difficulties on this island populated only by five old widows, they are eventually overcome by the humanity possessed by the five widows. This film, despite being a comedy, has all the elements of a human drama.

Other films which can obviously be listed in the human drama category include <Crying Fist>, the story of two men who try to secure a better life for themselves through boxing, <> which is about a boy and his older brother who has cancer, <> which tells the story of a mother who walks hundreds of kilometers to attend her daughter's wedding, and <Wedding Campaign> in which two men in rural Korea fly to Uzbekistan in order to secure ethnic Korean brides for themselves. Certain common themes can be found in these human dramas. With the exception of <> and <>, these films were based on real stories. These real-life stories are different from those found in <> and <>, two films which shattered box office records in 2004 and which were based on historical facts.

While the "historically authentic films" released in 2004 simultaneously exposed two tendencies, namely the desire for spectacular scenes and a return to the past, the real-life films released in 2005 are characterized by their focus on the reality of individual lives. The fact that this individual reality has replaced the desire for spectacle which had been dominant over the last few years proves that Korean cinema has now entered a phase in which the focus will increasingly be on the telling of more authentic and individual stories. This trend is also visible in fictional blockbusters such as < Welcome to Dongmakgol>. The fact that humanism has proven to be a popular topic does not meanthat the range of realism has been extended. Nevertheless, the emergence of new themes and materials constitutesa significant development, in that, it marks a new departure for a Korean film industry which had long dealt with the same topics. Furthermore, these films attracted not only moviegoers in their teens and 20s, but also appealed to audiences over the age of 30. As such, human dramas have to some degree contributed to expanding the range of moviegoers in 2005.

i read in dramabeans that this movie is a melo drama. Not another one from Kwon sang woo. I think he should choose a more cheerful character instead always doing a melo drama. Considering he is getting marry shouldn't he choose more cheerful role? i didn't meant to bash KSW i'm just saying my thoughts. I love HJW, can't wait to watch this.

The movie will be released sometime next year, and on the downside, I’m a bit sick of Kwon Sang-woo too, and terminal-illness melodramas are never my bag. On the upside, it’s always great to see Ha Ji-won in action.
Me too, am sick of watching KSW suffer so much, again dying at the end of a drama. HJW is very versatile and has a Best Actress award already in her portfolio. My favorite HJW tv drama is DAMO. My favorite KSW movie is ONCE UPON A TIME IN HS. Thanks for the news, kdramafanusa.

Kwon Sang-woo drops film, pisses off production

October 26th, 2008 // by javabeans

Newly wedded Kwon Sang-woo (Fate, Bad Love) has dropped out at the last minute of what would have been his next film project, My Love By My Side, and criticism is building.

Apparently Kwon had made every commitment to appear in the project save for putting his seal on the contract (which often doesn’t happen until the last minute). The film, which was set to begin filming next month, now struggles in the wake of this unforeseen hurdle. The production company said that they received word suddenly over the weekend, after the terms of the contract, fees, and other details had been worked out: “He didn’t even explain his reasons for quitting. We’re all bewildered.”

Kwon Sang-woo was to have played a sufferer of Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative illness), and had been cast opposite Ha Ji-won, who is still cast in the film. He held a fanmeeting in Japan just yesterday, on the 25th, where he announced, “Contrary to reports, my next project will be a drama series.”

The production is currently looking for a new lead actor.

Hm, what happened, Kwon? Did marriage make you suddenly forget your manners?
