Sunday, September 28, 2014 - In semi-darkness, silhouettes appeared one after another,a wave from the first, an urging from the next one. While Shibuya Public Hall was already resounding with cheers especially from the first floor seats, it was only when the last silhouette appeared that everything went into full blast. And what better way to start the eve of your birthday than with a big bang?

And the Big Bang started with "No Name" as it delivered that punch, enhanced by the most unlikely troupe of backup dancers -- the lights. Constantly moving and changing, they formed shapes and brushed transparent glazes over the birthday celebrant and the band members that the first word that came to mind was "Watercolor." Moving over the first floor audience, then the performers, at times looking like a diaphanous veil that brought the two together, the lights turned them into one entity that could appropriately describe the first song's title, the name of Inoran's official fan club. Catchy in tempo yet flowing in its legato, it was the perfect embodiment of the distinct quality of Inoran's music, evidenced since his beginnings with Lunacy (LUNA SEA) and carrying on to this very day -- smooth, sexy, incredibly sensual.

And the flow continued with the drums playing a beat so similar to the Arabic malfouf. From that malfouf, the guitars and bass joined in for "Hide and Seek." Just as they drew the stage and the first floor together during "No Name," the lights were at it again, this time urging the audience as they flashed at the words "Come On" before going into a pattern of vigorous movement and then into flashing strobes that chopped every movement with every bright flash. Just as the malfouf introduces a dancer to her audience during a drum solo, this beat could have served as an introduction as well, joined with "No Name" to whet the audience's appetite for more.

Smoke rises, heralding the song of the same title.  Photo by Kazuyoshi Usui.

From the use of very unique backup dancers -- the lights -- to the achievement of atmosphere with an animated backdrop, smoke rose behind the performers to herald the song of the same title. Joining the pas de deux of lights and legato, the rising smoke undulated in contrast to the more choppy, staccato movements of Inoran, creating an interesting blend of hard and soft, starting small before it gradually grew. Filling the screen with one big fog as the song increased in intensity, the music never lost its characteristic sensuality despite its catchy, upbeat feel, moving on until it was time for that song that calls the words "sexy" and "dance" to mind.

"I hear the secrets that you keep, when you're talking in your sleep..."

A fan of music of the eighties will start thinking of those words once he or she hears the introduction of "no options." A beat one can easily dance to, any way one wants to, clearly a favorite among Inoran's songs. Whether it brings to mind the music video of the Romantics -- sleeping beauties, Marilyn Monroe and all -- or just moves your body with its heavy downbeats and lazy twang, you cannot deny the intoxicating allure of its melody and rhythm. And the audience danced, both seated and standing, movements accentuated by the downbeats throughout the duration of the catchy song.

After one more song, an equipment change foretold the transition to a more solemn atmosphere as the Gretsch White Falcon was used, starting with a very brief rendition of "Joshua" before the backdrop changed to drizzling petals of light as "Sakura" was sung. In the spirit of a memorial, lighters were raised, their flames like a candlelight vigil in the dark, solemn hall as a reminder that even in the middle of a celebration, one can take the time to remember and mourn as the drizzle turned into rain, myriads now falling as the song drew to a close. This particular segment seemed to be that of bigger guitars with another switch when Inoran donned a more hollow twelve string for "HOME." Backdrop scene changed to a view one gets when one travels by air and three-fourth time accompanied the aerial scene leading to what could be considered quite a revelation that night: the barefoot bassist's duet with the drums.

During last year's "Make You Bang!!" tour, bassist u:zo's potential could easily be seen in his bass lines and the way fingers on both hands moved over those strings. This year, however, that potential turned into a beautiful melody that showed the fingers of his left hand moving in varying speeds over the neck of his instrument, while the fingers of his right hand matched to complete his bass technique. For this particular number, he was more than just part of the rhythm section, taking the lead while the three other musicians provided the support.

With too many things happening that night, it was rather difficult to tell which one occurred when, unless you were taking serious notes instead of enjoying the show. At some point, the cake was brought onstage, candles lit for Inoran to blow out. And blow them out he did, without much difficulty. A bit of fooling around ensued before the cake was returned backstage, but not without the birthday celebrant getting a little taste of the frosting first. Perhaps it was the realization of the theme of this tour after an earlier occurrence when a rose emerged among the thorns -- in the midst of the female outcries of "Inoran!" a lone male voice sang loud and clear the first line, "Happy Birthday to You..."

With his support musicians having their own respective bands, Inoran always features a song from each as well. Last year, guitarist Yukio Murata of my way my love performed "
A Man of Loser" during the tour. This year, it was "BRAQUE" with the backdrop resembling a shattered windshield, network noise or TV ants, whichever way one saw it. Whatever image one associated with the scene, however, it was one that characterized my way my love's music, which is classified as noise-rock. An interesting shift in time signatures from three to four counts per measure, while flashing strobes added an animated picture effect onstage. From "BRAQUE," the show went on to feature a song from Sonz of Freedom, "African Hardcore Samba," a latin and hard rock fusion that had u:zo assuming the role of the vocalist just for this particular performance.

REDISCOVER ON ANOTHER.  Photo by Kazuyoshi Usui
Carrying on from the songs of his fellow band members, Inoran resumed performing his own music, the video of "REDISCOVER ON ANOTHER" providing a backdrop for the song itself, aiding the audience in singing along with him. The main interaction, however, came with the last song, "Get Laid," where he went into a test run of the audience's voice in shouting out, "Get Laid" and "Oh Yeah!" Using variations of the two lines, it was one repeat after another until the song started, "Get Laid! Get Laid!" and "Oh Yeah! Oh Yeah!" shouted by the fired up audience as the music cued them when to do so. And as it started with a Big Bang, so did the show end with one, the audience completely energized by the lively song, everything -- lights, atmosphere, voices -- coming together to bring the public celebration to a rather reluctant ending. By the time the band exited, the audience still could not get enough as everyone called for an encore.

Last year, Inoran once tweeted that he, band members and staff had called a meeting to make the live experience more enjoyable for his fans. And enjoyable it was, the evidence of his growth in LUNA SEA carrying over to his individual endeavors. His willingness to turn things over to the other band members reflected his support for musicians who had their own individual projects as well, using his reach to expose his fans to the works of his fellow band members. Even as his music evolved from the dramatic, emotional tunes of his past tours to the more lively, upbeat tunes with lyrics all in English, it never lost its characteristic sensuality that lures a listener in. Among the members of LUNA SEA, he was always the one who was willing to take a risk. After all, he took one when he launched his European tour in 2012. Yet, by taking risks, he made it to the roster of artists of Fender U.S.A., being the first Japanese musician to make it to that list, and he continues with plans to perform elsewhere, just as countries and venues of his Asian Tour were revealed on the eve of his birthday. Can he eventually conquer the Western World the same way Japanese jazz musicians have been able to? It's not a short or easy task but a rather long and Herculean one. With patience and persistence, however, he just might do it!

And after Shibuya Public Hall's celebration ended, the festivities moved on to the grand finale at Akasaka BLITZ...

But that's another story.
