“Yon-sama’s Professionalism” is More Than Enough for the Heavyweight Crane

Sports Today reported on the 17th that

in Bae Yong Joon’s latest TV commercial for Taster’s Choice coffee,

there was a scene in which he was sitting on a swing above the summer sea

set against a backdrop of beautiful blue sky and sea.

This scene was not created or superimposed by any computer graphics.

Everything was really shot on-site, and for this scene,

the production team had set up a heavyweight hoist crane at the beach.

Such cranes are normally used at construction sites and toweri at over ten metres.

According to the report, Bae Yong Joon had leaned his body close to the swing

which was suspended from the crane

and during the shooting,

he had moved his body about easily whilst on the swing above the sea.

Most people in the same situation would show tension and fear on their faces

when confronted with the sea right below them.

But Bae Yong Joon had kept his smile throughout;

his ease and performance far surpassed what was expected of him,

surprising even the production team.

The report also said that Bae Yong Joon had been kept busy everyday

in order to wrap up the movie April Snow.

After the completion of April Snow,

he will start the preparation work for The Great King and the Four Gods.

In addition to character analysis and other work,

he will also go through a body re-shaping program to achieve a strong and agile physique

in order to play the role which will don war helmet and ride horses.

Further, during the preparation for The Great King and The Four Gods,

he is also scheduled to carry out shooting for the new commercial film

for Coca-Cola’s Acha tea product,

an event that is closely watched by the Japanese media.

As for the press conference for The Great King and The Four Gods in Japan,

which is heavily anticipated due to Bae Yong Joon’s presence at the event,

Sports Today further reported that a party from Bae Yong Joon’s agency BOF

had expressed doubt in his attendance, saying,

“There’re difficulties for him to attend the event”.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

For Our Eyes Only: His Devoted Love & Care for his Family

- 8 Staff & Friends bare all for the first time…

“The costumes Bae Yong Joon wore that were displayed in the photo exhibition

in Korea and Japan? Of course I’ve kept them properly.

They would fetch quite a handsome sum if I auction them, no?

Haha… Such seduction, how nice!”

Miss Hon Won-Gyon said jokingly;

she has been Bae Yong Joon’s stylist for nine years now.

We carried out conversations with eight of Bae Yong Joon’s “family members”

about what he is like in real life.

Yes, Bae Yong Joon unmasked.

“On normal days, he prefers casual clothes.

For instance, the free and casual look, jeans and tee shirt plus a jacket thrown in.

As for couture or high fashion branded goods, he doesn't seem to like them much.

The clothes and accessories in The Image are all my original design.”

Miss Hon had started working on the design nine months before the shooting of The Image,

and she even personally scouted for the materials needed for the costumes.

“It was hard work.

During the shooting, the results of his training regime were very obvious.

His body shape and physique were drastically different from before,

so we had to alter many of the clothes there and then at the shooting sites.

As for detailed sizing, pardon me, but I can’t reveal.

His waistline got smaller, his chest and shoulders were significantly bigger.

If we buy off-the-rack clothes according to his shoulder size,

then the clothes will not fit him at the waist, everything will be too loose and big.”

Even so she did not utter even a single word of complaint and grievance.

She continued to work happily and eagerly,

perhaps because she is enthralled with Yon-sama as a person.

“Yong Joon is sometimes like an older brother and sometimes like a father,

and sometimes, he’s even like a school principal!”

“He is very demanding and sets very high standards when it comes to work.

Although sometimes it can get a little overwhelming,

he also has his gentle and humourous side.”

“There was once my mother was sick.

He had returned from a fishing trip and he told me,

‘I caught some carps, you can boil some fish soup for your mother as medicine.’

I don’t even know how he came to know about my mother’s illness.

He’s someone who notices details and is very considerate.

Actually, many aspects of him are like this, very caring and detailed.”

Caring for even his staff’s family members…

Yon-sama is probably the only one.

“He is a professional.

He's very gentle in mannerism, and at the same time, very manly.

I suppose it’s tolerance and the breadth of his generosity.

I think he has this special something,

this enormous generosity that makes him so tolerant and understanding.”

[Truelove: This is not easy to translate,

the original text describes him as someone with ‘scale’.]

Miss Chon Sen-Mur, the makeup artist, said the above.

“His face is goodlooking naturally…

He’s really very beautiful from head to toe, almost breathtakingly so.

But sometimes due to his punishing work schedule,

his skin condition will be less than perfect.

Times like this he will come here for facial treatments.

But he’s a traditional Korean man, so mentally he does feel a little awkard…

And he doesn’t like thick makeup as well.”

[she represents Jung Saem Mool Inspiration Beauty Salon.]

He uses Korean makeup brands ‘Amore Pacific’ or ‘Hera’.

Miss Hyon Jin from the same salon has been Yon-sama’s hair stylist since ‘Winter Sonata’.

“His hair texture is coarse and he has thick hair,

this is much easier to manage than those with fine and little hair.

When I do his hair, he will give me some little ideas or suggestions,

like ‘Is this not quite suitable with today’s occasion?’ and the likes.

I’m just an ordinary being, and I can’t achieve perfection every time.

So it helps that he shares with me his thinking.

For instance when it comes to hair colour or hairstyle,

he may say, ‘I don’t like having colours that are too bright’ or make such similar requests.

But generally speaking, he trusts me to manage his hair.”

So what hairstyle will he be sporting for the new movie, ‘Going Out’?

Seems like it’s still a secret, sorry!

Yi Byon-Lyon is Yon-sama’s golf instructor.

This is his first time being interviewed by the Japanese media.

In Korea, this celebrity is a household name.

He became a professional player in 1994.

Today, he appears frequently on golf magazines and TV programs;

he is also the golf professor at Han Yang University.

“In golf, the hardest part is to achieve the right state of mind,

that is the frame of mind to play well with ease.

I re-learnt the spirit of professionalism from him.

He possesses professionalism

and his focus and concentration surpass most other people.

His athletic ability is also superior to most,

he managed 300 yards at his very first try,

and now his average distance is comparable to the professional golfers."

But lately Yon-sama has not been playing much golf there due to his hectic work.

He belongs to the “focused and high concentration” type,

once he comes to play, he will golf for some five hours.

After his round or rounds of golf, he will go to the Sports Gym [in the SF],

a place that he goes everyday.

“There’re times when he goes twice in the same day.

Each session is two hours, so that’s a total of four hours.

No one else who trains as hard as him.”

The head of In the SF gym, Miss Te Suk revealed.

“Although Yong Joon trained directly under JP [Yim Jyon Pil],

the person who helped create that body was actually the Gym Master.

So the day before the photo exhibition,

Yong Joon gave us a private visit at Lotte Hotel, just the Gym Master and myself.

He’s someone who doesn’t forget a good deed or past favours.”

During the three days of shooting for The Image,

he even stopped the intake of water.

“This is so that the muscles can be more defined

and to show the best possible body shape and line.

Although these are all things that professional bodybuilders do before a major competition,

he did all of them.

In terms of mental strength, he is unusually tough.”

Just then, the Gym Master Koh Jye Su appeared.

“When he came to me, he told me he wanted the perfect physique.

I first took a look at his body. At that time, he was already in good shape,

muscles were very taut and he already had a sportsman’s build and frame.

That was a body that had already undergone training.

So based on this foundation, we devised a training regime for him.

But before that, there was the dietary regime.

Many people have been defeated at this round, but he persisted.

Now, in order that he maintains 80% of the physique he had achieved, he still trains actively.”

JP who instructed Bae Yong Joon directly shared a few funny stories

that happened during the training.

“I remember when he was dieting,

he was always saying, ‘Feel like eating ah….’ or stuff like that.

There was once I was eating ttokpokki [Korean spicy rice cake], and he caught me.

Then he said to me, ‘It’s nice to eat alone hor… It makes me so sad…’

Then later, Bae Yong Joon also issued a “No Ramen” order.

Because ramen’s smell is very strong,

even if we ate where he could not see us, he could still smell it and know.

So, everyone had to stop eating ramen until the shooting was over.”

Lastly… Kim Te Fan, the photographer behind The Image.

The truth is he’s still an unknown in Korea,

it was Yon-sama who gave him the opportunity.

“That was sometime in April.

At about three or four o’clock in the morning, I got a call from him.

I was still partying outside at that time. He said to me, ‘Come over.’

In the past, there were times he would often call me and invite me to his place.

So that day, the two of us were drinking Yakult

when he said to me, ‘I’m thinking to work on a pictorial album.

Te fan, why do you do it for me?’

I had never worked on such a major or large scale project, so I started to refuse him.

‘I can’t do it.’ I was very troubled for some time,

but he said to me, ‘You can do it.

I’ve been watching you all this time and I believe in your passion for your work.

Surely you can do it. Think about it.’

He gave me courage and confidence, it was him.”

Te Fan will also be responsible for photography work in the movie ‘Going Out’.

Yon-sama’s gentle ways, his tolerance and generosity,

the motivation and confidence he gives to young people,

the gratefulness he has for his elders and ‘sumbaes’…

This is the very essence of Bae Yong Joon the person.

This is why there are so many outstanding staff members around him,

and these will bring him even better works.

This is Yon-sama’s devoted love for his family, I suppose…

bb: honestly, it was quite heartbreaking to translate this piece.

not only could we see his anxiety towards the reception of his new movie,

we could also have a glimpse of what he's feeling and facing inside.

have we, the fans and the media, been chasing too hard, and much too close?

it's almost funny how a man who's showered with so much love

is quite possibly also one of the loneliest men around.

dear fans, everything in moderation, please.

dear media, everything in moderation too, please.

[Trans] 24/08/2005: Interview with BYJ & Director Hur

Interview with BYJ & Director Hur: “There was one scene with sixty takes.”

200508240000291top_c3_b.jpg

He was so lethargic that his upper jaw hurt.

Hanryu star Bae Yong Joon looked as perfect as a huge sculpture after make-up,

but inside, he was feeling much anxiety and worry.

Director Hur Jin Ho who was sitting next to him also reached for a cigarette.

The movie April Snow directed by Director Hur

and starred Bae Yong Joon and Son Ye Jin held its preview on 23rd in Seoul.

On 24th, after the preview, Bae Yong Joon and Hur Jin Ho accepted an interview

for the first time at the Lotte Hotel lobby at MyeongDong, Seoul.

As a friend’s father had suddenly passed away,

Bae Yong Joon had gone to pay his last respects the night before

and had just returned to Seoul from Won-Ju.

He asked cautiously, “Mind if I smoke?”

“After wrapping up a movie, the cast would habitually say the filming’s been tiring.

But I still want to say it, this time, it’s really very tiring.

Because of my character, I would usually prepare everything,

even the impromptu lines, before shooting,

and I would carry out all the necessary preparation to immerse into the role.

But the director has forbidden me to do that.”

April Snow is a story depicting a married man and a married woman

who were thrown into distraught and confusion

after discovering the infidelity of their respective spouses

and how they would in turn fall in love under such ironical circumstances.

Bae Yong Joon played the role of In Soo, a lighting director

who became angry and subsequently distressed and almost destroyed

upon learning about his wife’s affair.

The movie’s director, Hur Jin Ho had displayed a unique and unusually sensitive flair

towards the expression of love and emotions in his previous works,

Christmas in August and One Fine Spring Day.

As compared to “making preparation in advance”,

he stresses more on the natural feeling on-site.

Besides, he is also well-known for repeated re-takes until he is fully satisfied,

thus tearing the actors and actresses out.

Hur Jin Ho, who had been an observer during the interview so far,

voluntarily confessed, “Including the re-shooting,

there was one particular scene that we shot for sixty times.”

Bae Yong Joon who was watching the director sideways,

“When the director shouted OK, I lost consciousness at the scene.

Due to fatigue, I was just lying there immobile for an hour.”

So which scene was that exactly?

The truth was that scene was not particularly important in the movie,

it was when Bae Yong Joon got to know about his wife’s accident and her affair

and was making a call to his junior.

Hur Jin Ho said, “Although some people will question the effect of making repeated takes,

every re-take will create some new elements and feelings, and it’s a wonderful feeling.

We eventually used the 60th take, that’s the final take. I’m very satisfied.”

Although one could see the pursuit for perfection in both the actor and the director,

reviews and comments about the movie April Snow

and about Bae Yong Joon’s acting have been varied and mixed.

The reporter asked the director, “Amongst everything you’ve heard after the preview,

what was it you heard that moved you,

and what was it you heard that had saddened you the most?”

Hur Jin Ho paused for a little while before replying,

“When the cast said it’s very good, I was most moved.”

As for the second question, he said,

“There’s been nothing that I’ve heard with my own ears that had made me sad.”

When the reporter persisted and asked,

“What about things that you’ve heard indirectly?”,

Hur Jin Ho answered, “I’ve forgotten.”

Thereafter, he changed the topic to the bed scene in the movie and said laughingly,

“After my university mates watched the movie,

they said Bae Yong Joon has got such a perfect built,

they can’t show the movie to their wives.”

When posed with the same questions,

Bae Yong Joon replied, “I was most moved when I heard I’ve challenged

and broken down my previous fixated image.”

As for the second question, Bae Yong Joon took a cue from the director

and said, “I’ve forgotten.”

Towards the end of the interview,

when having sandwiches as lunch with Bae Yong Joon,

he finally did share some of his inner thoughts.

Although he is a Hanryu star surrounded by devoted fans in almost all areas of Asia,

he is much like a bird in a cage,

with no freedom and no private space and time and life. He patted his own chest and said,

“If things aren’t so bad, why would I be taking the special Chinese pills*?

Not too long ago, I was just running with abandon along the Han River for an hour.

Although at that time I felt as though my lungs were popping out,

it was liberating, exhilarating.”

He further shared, “People like us can only vent our emotions in studios or sets.”

Hur Jin Ho comforted him by saying,

“So, quickly take on the next movie then!”

Special Feature on April Snow:

Director Hur Jin Ho Chooses His Five Fave Scenes

1st15ra.jpg

1. Shot more than 30 takes: The scene where In-soo spoke to his junior over the phone.

Lighting director In-soo [bae Yong Joon] had to rush to Samcheok Hospital

because of his unconscious wife.

He made a phone call to his junior at work, Gwang-Ri,

to say he was unable to go back to Seoul.

Director Hur: We did many takes for this scene, probably more than thirty times.

That’s because I had wanted to spend more time deliberating

and thinking things through in the first half of the movie.

Bae Yong Joon lost himself after completing this scene.

And after we wrapped up the final scene for this movie,

Bae Yong Joon collapsed on the spot.

Because we were shooting in front of the operating theatre in the hospital,

sometimes we would see dead bodies being carried out,

the general conditions were pretty bad.

If you’re just watching this scene without paying any special attention,

you would probably see a scene that’s not exactly remarkable or memorable.

But personally, I feel that In-soo’s emotions here were very natural,

this scene appeared for about a minute in the movie.

2nd16cc.jpg

2. In-soo’s tears – the scene where he drank with his junior.

In-soo was drinking with Gwang-Ri, who was both his junior as well as lighting assistant.

He was immersed in a sorrow so deep and so painful he was unable to suppress it.

Director Hur: This scene did not have precise or any specific description planned out,

but the character In-soo had to try his utmost not to break down before his junior.

As for Gwang-Ri, this character was one that did not quite know what to do

or how to deal with In-soo.

However, In-soo eventually still broke down in tears right in front of Gwang-Ri.

I was thinking about this scene from my own angle

as well as from the lighting director’s angle,

that sort of breaking down and crying was definitely something

to be shameful, bashful about.

It’s also quite sad to think about it that way.

In that entire scene, it didn’t seem that Bae Yong Joon was acting at all.

3rd17fe.jpg

3. Improvisation – the scene of In-soo and Seo-young at the sashimi eatery.

The man and the woman who found out about the betrayal of their spouses.

Both their spouses were bordering between life and death,

yet the two of them were brought together under the most peculiar of links

and there came about the occasion of them raising glasses and have a drink together.

Director Hur: Was it Son Yejin’s improvisation?

Well, instead of saying it’s improvisation on the spot,

we might as well say she came to the set prepared with her lines and just acted accordingly.

In-soo asked Seo-young why she had decided to get married.

The Seo-young who replied “Father told me to go for matchmaking,

so I just got myself married” gave a very interesting feeling.

4th15cq.jpg

4. The cold feeling of being betrayed: the scene the couple walked into the hotel.

The relationship between them took a step forward, and they went to the hotel.

Director Hur: The two people were walking,

so we slowly turned the camera towards another angle,

so that we could see the two walk into the hotel.

A seemingly ordinary scene,

but because the relationship between the two was somewhat delicate and peculiar,

the way we captured them entering the hotel gave a feeling

of making up for something in the past, so it spoke of betrayal.

Then from the other side of that scene, we could see the sea,

the play of space here was very interesting.

Looking at the back of the two people walking hand-in-hand into the hotel

it seem as though we had shot them from afar,

it was a very nice feeling when we looked at it later

5th13lx.jpg

5. The bed scene: The bed scene between In-soo and Seo-young.

In-soo and Seo-young, the sharing of love.

Director Hur: I think this is my first time using a close-up shooting like this.

The breathing of the actors, the expression as they touch and caress each other…

That’s a nice feeling.

Regarding Recent News Reports

Hello family!

Recently, there have been numerous news reports on the review of the movie,

as well as Bae Yong Joon's future, etc.

If there is such a need, we will act as per how we have always done,

we will share the facts and tell the truth to everyone through posting of official notices.

I would like everyone to think back to the time before April Snow commenced filming.

During that time, there was also a lot of speculation and news reports

pertinent to the shooting schedule of the movie, about the female lead and others.

In fact, there were also other similar incidents in the past that happened repeatedly.

While we feel sorry about groundless and even malicious news reports,

we also believe firmly that the trust between Bae Yong Joon and his family

will not be affected and will not be easily swayed.

If we allow our moods to pendulum between joy and sadness

by some reports in the newspapers, magazines and TV all the time,

wouldn't it be too tiring?

Yes, news reports can be a basis for reference,

and there are also many good articles,

but I think the assessment and review of a movie and an actor

really depend on personal perception and how sensitive that person is.

Tomorrow is the start of a three-day holiday,
