[ kofic ] SONG Kang-ho has become a representative symbol of the male actor in the Korean film industry. In the late 1990s, he was widely accepted as one of the three male actors, along with actors Choi Minsik and Sul Kyunggu, who were dominating Korea’s film industry. Casting him in the lead role almost always guarantees a box-office hit. His unique comedic acting ability, shown in <The Number Three>, <The Quiet Family>, and <The Foul King>, received rave reviews from the public, but so did his more dramatic performances in <Joint Security Area (JSA)>, <Memories of Murder>, and <Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance>. Whether he is playing a man who becomes a gangster solely out of material need in <The Show Must Go On> (2007), a passionate father in <The Host>(2007), or a garage owner so ordinary as to be scary in <The Secret Sunshine>, he constantly proved the depth and breadth of his acting ability. With <The Good, the Bad, and the Weird> (2008) and <Thirst> (2009), directed by his long-time acquaintances Kim Jeewoon and Park Chanwook, he successfully portrayed new characters in genres wholly different from anything he had done before. The huge success of <Secret Reunion> in 2010 proved again that Song Kangho is a powerful force in the Korean movie industry. Uncharacteristically, Song failed to draw large crowds for his next two films, the genre pics <Hindsight> in 2011 and 2012’s <Howling>. However, the star came roaring back in 2013, when he recorded the most successful year of any Korean actor, after starring in three back-to-back hits, namely Bong Joonho’s long-awaited sci-fi blockbuster <Snowpiercer>, the Chuseok holiday period drama <The Face Reader> and the smash hit courtroom drama <The Attorney>. The total viewers tally for his films soared over 30 million during the year, and he added several acting awards to his growing collection, most notably the Grand Prize in Film at the Baeksang Arts Awards. Following a well-earned break that left him absent from screens in 2014, Song next teamed up with Lee Joonik for the period drama <The Throne>, playing King Yeongjo, the Korean ruler who infamously had his belligerent son, the Crown Prince Sado (played by YOO Ah-in), suffocated to death in a large wooden chest filled with rice. In 2016, Song teamed up with Kim Jeewoon for the fourth time on the Colonial Era action-thriller <The Age of Shadows>, the first local production of Hollywood studio Warner Brothers. Based on real events, the historical drama <Taxi Driver> (2017) allowed him to add another title to his list of films that crossed the symbolic 10 million admissions threshold. Reuniting with Bong, Song reached new heights with the internationally acclaimed <PARASITE> (2019). Also in 2019, he was handed the Excellence Award at the Locarno International Film Festival. His performance in Koreeda Hirokazu’s <Broker> (2022) allowed him to pick up Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival. As a symbol of the range of his roles, the film released in Korea around the same time as another of his recent films, the aerial disaster movie <Emergency Declaration> (2022).

Spoiler

[ koreanfilm.org ] Song Kang-ho (b. January 17, 1967) never professionally trained as an actor, beginning his career in social theatre groups after graduating from Kimhae High School. Later he joined Kee Kuk-seo's influential theatre company with its emphasis on instinctive acting and improvisation which proved Song's training ground. Although regularly approached to act in films, he always turned down the opportunity until taking a role as an extra in Hong Sang-soo's The Day a Pig Fell into the Well (1996).

In the following year, after portraying one of the homeless in Jang Sun-woo's docu-style Bad Movie, he gained cult notoriety for his show-stealing performance in Song Neung-han's No. 3 as a gangster training a group of young recruits, winning his first acting award. Since that time he's been cast in several supporting roles before before his high-profile appearance as Han Seok-kyu's secret agent partner in Kang Je-kyu's blockbuster thriller Shiri.

In early 2000, Song became a star with his first leading role in the box office smash The Foul King, for which he reputedly did most of his own stunts. But it is with his award-winning role as a North Korean sergeant in Joint Security Area/JSA that Song came to the forefront as one of Korea's leading actors. Song also starred in Park Chan-wook's acclaimed followup, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, which centers around a father's pursuit of his daughter's kidnappers.

In 2002 Song starred in another major production by Myung Films, YMCA Baseball Team, about Korea's first baseball team which formed in the early 20th century. The following year he played a leading role in yet another critically-acclaimed smash hit, Memories of Murder from young director Bong Joon-ho.

In 2004 Song starred in a film by debut director Im Charn-sang that imagines the life of South Korean president Park Chung-hee's personal barber. The following year he also took the lead in Antarctic Journal, a big-budget project by debut director Yim Phil-sung, about an expedition in Antarctica that performed weakly at the box-office.

In 2006 Song was thrust back in the spotlight, however, with a leading role in Bong Joon-ho's record-breaking creature movie The Host. The film helped to broaden international awareness of Song's talent, and indeed he beat out several of Asia's best known stars to be named Best Actor at the inaugural Asian Film Awards held in Hong Kong in March 2007.

Thanks so much kdramafanusa for the Pusan Critics award mention, as I obviously did not remember about this. :sweatingbullets: Lucky that we have the details posted at the 12PIFF thread.. list have been updated, hope we'd be able to get the complete set.

Really appreciate the highlight and the 27th Critics Choice Awards winners' pics. Both JDY & SKH are definitely the clear 'regulars' at the awards of 2007.

Well done Song Kang Ho & Jeon Do Yeon!

Rubie dear....what takes you so long... to start this thread...yr second k/fav man. :w00t:

He is THE MAN that really has true talents and deserving all the awards that he had gotten.

Checking his movie credentials,..ha..ha. I had almost watch all his movies except those in his pioneering days.

 Huh.. what took me so long? :sweatingbullets:What took you so long.. I'm sure you're better informed about SKH than I really am. Like I said.. I just don't want to let the thread down (well, any thread that I started.. which is too many already :sweatingbullets: ) but really.. imagine.. soompi without a SKH thread.. is .. simply unthinkable.

My second fave man  .. is currently HJM.. hehee (oops, sorry LJJ-ssi) but as an actor.. SKH is just perfect, everytime and anytime. That I can vouch.. considering the limited info I have on him.

Ha..ha.. so SKH is not yr second fav k/star, but HJM, :P , but you still have yr very good taste. Like fine connoisseur of k/movies & dramas, you are way...better than I am.

As you had mentioned, starting a thread is a commitment... not just starting one and leaving it for others for update and input. Just find it too time consuming to do that. ;)

This is an interesting topic.. translated & highlighted by dramabeans (please refer link). Merci!

Amongst the familiar names in the industry, SKH (so as HJM, Sul Kyung Gu) are being mentioned in the article.. it's a good read.

It's about time, gals! SKH is definitely one of the best actors in Korea, in the world probably. Great reading, Rubie. Thanks for the article. And yes, I share the sentiment. Soompi without SKH - Korean Cinema without SKH is simply unthinkable. The man probably does not have the best look in the world, but it is actors like SKH who will retain the longevity of the Korean Wave, and K-cinema in general.

Thanks for starting this thread, rubie!

It's kinda funny that (arguably) Korea's best actor took so long to get his own thread on soompi. Oh well, better late than never!

So far I have seen him in:

Joint Security Area

Memories Of Murder

Sympathy For Mr Vengeance

The Quiet Family

The Foul King

The Host

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance

^A couple of them are my all-time favourite movies. He is an extraordinary actor. Really looking forward to Good Bad Weird <3

PS- Congrats on the recent awards!

this is his website which stored alot of clips data too , if you want to watch some NO 3 clips i think there are some in the site. No 3 was really one wacky black comedy .lol and Mr Song Kang Ho's role in it was soo classic you wont forget .it had me laughing too hard till it hurts . just that the subtitles in the DVD released didnt do justice to his lines which i think shd be so more witty in korean . but still for black comedy genre Quiet Family is my personal favourite

^ Thanks Shirley for the awards list. Got it updated, finally! Merci beaucoup! Mr. Song only won Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Actor once for each for the same movie in 1997.. after that, it's Best Actor all the way! :D

The articles are awesome sharing.. The Choco Pie Guy... hahaa.. I remember that in JSA. His action definitely got LBH's character sweating, too.

Hi BitterLemon... you've got it spot on! :D Must make it right in the soompi forum, huh.. we must have a SKH thread or it wouldn't be complete. Nonono..

As jicks mentioned.. better late than never... but quite a few years late, that is.

Hope everyone would share thoughts or articles you came across on SKH... so that we can fill the thread, befitting Korea's Best Actor.

NOT RIGHT :sweatingbullets: not right at all.

Not right indeed.

So... thanks rubie for starting this thread ! (yep, I'm really original)

Song Kang-Ho is not one of my favorite actors (I'm affraid I don't have a lot of male fav actors  ), but he's just great. The best in Korea, for sure.

I recently saw him in Secret Sunshine and he's impressive, it's his best performance IMHO. In fact, I really didn't understood all the big sensation with Jeon Do-Yeon (she's just OK) as Song Kang-Ho is far better... maybe we're so used to his excellence we don't need to remind of it (oh no ! SKH got the best actor award again ! maybe we should create a "second best actor" award :D )
