I love reading year-end reviews – it lets me walk down memory lane and reminisce about all the great (and not-so-great) dramas I watched or passed on this year. It’s not a surprise that our guest blogger from Outside Seoul took a fun and different approach in this very enjoyable read. -soomp

Whether it was a common plot device like this year’s abundance of time traveling or a little detail like a prominently featured umbrella, 2012’s Kdramas have been nothing if not on trend.

The question is, who did it best?

The tragic fate of red dresses
History of a Salaryman (January 2) * Gentleman’s Dignity (May 26)

These two comedies don’t have much in common—one is a goofy workplace gagfest and the other is a grown-up romance. They do share one thing, though: knit dresses being slowly unraveled by a single loose thread. In both cases, the dresses are fire-engine red and the strings are held by the show’s male lead. Taking place in the dramas’ first episodes, these dress-demolishing scenes are silly good fun and also serve to develop the characters that are involved.

History of a Salaryman’s hopeless schulb of a male lead doesn’t always think about the consequences of his actions, so of course he would absently tug at a red thread he notices while sitting in a hotel lobby. And the female lead’s cartoony outrage when she realizes her dress is shrinking is further evidence of the nasty temper that this episode has already established for her.

The parallel scene in Gentleman’s Dignity is played out on a bigger scale—instead of the thread stretching across a single room, it trails for at least a city block before either character realizes what’s happened. Instead of being mad like Salaryman’s female lead, Yi Soo is paralyzed with impotent embarrassment and can’t even manage to cover herself without the male lead’s help. The male lead shows his character in the aftermath of the unwinding: suave, sophisticated, and take-no-prisoners, he barely bats an eyelash before appropriating a tablecloth and artistically folding it into a skirt replacement.

Winner: Although I disliked this show enough to drop it by episode 7, even I have to admit that Gentleman’s Dignity is beautifully filmed and does a great job with scene building. This segment in particular is flawlessly executed: everything about it works just right, from the bustling background of a walkable city neighborhood and the fabulous wardrobe to the dress’s slow, slow unraveling. Salaryman’s take on the scene is also fine, but lacking in epic scope.

Shows about groups of female friends are a long-running trend in Korean drama, but this focus has shifted in the wake of 2009’s Boys over Flowers. In 2012, it was close male friendships that seemed to anchor every drama.

Whether they met in prison, high school, or the royal court (three places frequent drama watchers will realize aren’t entirely dissimilar), this year’s men were always there for each other—except when they were throwing each other off cliffs, anyway. These modern-day Flower Fours looked to each other for camaraderie, support, and guidance, as well as the occasional nation-saving suicide mission.

Winner: The F-44 from A Gentleman’s Dignity. Friendships don’t get much better than this bromance—having been friends for at least twenty years, these guys have seen and accepted each other at their best and at their worst.

Actor Jang Dong-gun took part in Bvlgari’s lighting ceremony in Beijing on Jan. 30. 
The Hallyu star joined some 200 VIP guests at the event which saw the unveiling and lighting of jewel-encrusted serpents on the Shin Kong Place department store building.
Actress Michelle Yeoh and distinguished guests were present for the festivities which was the talk of the town.
The displays were made specifically to promote the brand’s Serpenti collection which also falls in perfect timing with the year of snake according to the Chinese zodiac.

CN Blue′s Lee Jong Hyun and Jang Dong Gun Formed Special Bond Over ‘Gentlemen’s Dignity’

CN Blue’s Lee Jong Hyun showed off his relationship with actor Jang Dong Gun.

CN Blue appeared as the guests on tvN Taxi on February 11.

While talking about each members’ acting careers, Lee Jong Hyun revealed that he keeps in touch with Jang Dong Gun every two to three months.

Lee Jong Hyun started his acting career last year in SBS Gentlemen’s Dignity as Jang Dong Gun’s son.

He reminisced and said “Jang Dong Gun said he’s never acted a father before. He was really fond of me and treated me so well.”








MC Kim Gura said “It’s not surprising that Jang Dong Gun’s never played a father character before. He and I are only two years apart though. He was born in 1972.”

Lee shared “At first I was running away from acting. I felt overwhelmed enough with music making and being a singer. But Jung Young Hwa provoked me by saying ‘This is such a wonderful opportunity and if you are gonna pass, I’ll take it’ and that’s how I ended up doing it.”

CN Blue members also talked about girl groups, favorite meals and restaurants among other topics in the show.

Cosmetic sales spike as more men buy beauty products

Women aren’t the only ones clogging up the cosmetic isles at local stores anymore; an increasing number of men are scooping up their favorite products too. This new trend has Korean cosmetic companies focusing on the image-conscious male.

According to Euromonitor International, the domestic male grooming market has grown by an average of 13 percent over the last six years, reaching total sales of 1 trillion won in 2012.

Korean cosmetics manufacturer, AmorePacific, reports increased sales over the last five years, especially in its male cosmetics brand Laneige Homme, which has increased by 33 percent since 2007.

“The skin care cabinet was reserved for women only, but now both business and consumers regard appearance-conscious men as those who care about themselves rather than homosexual,” Ok Eun-jae, a brand marketing manager at AmorePacific said Friday.

To stay competitive, the manufacturer recently signed rising film star Song Jung-gi as the face of the brand, hoping his sophisticated image and flawless skin will boost sales.

“We believe not only that Song Jung-gi is the perfect role model in the world of male grooming, but that he will also increase brand awareness and create a positive image among women who are the potential buyers of skin care products for men,” Ok said.

IOPE For Men, AmorePacific’s other male cosmetic brand, has picked heartthrob Jang Dong-gun as the new face this year.

Somang Cosmetics, one of the country’s leading cosmetic manufacturers, has also joined the industry’s aggressive marketing strategy.

Korean rapper Psy is now promoting the company’s hit brand, Man with Flowers. The musician was part of the product planning and advertising campaign, which has resulted in much media attention.

“The men’s cosmetics market is increasingly more complex and segmented like the female market so the cosmetics companies are doing their best to make sure their brands and products appeal to men,” a marketing manager at Somang Cosmetics said.

According to industry insiders, although the male market is further subdivided, there are certain products men prefer.

According to the marketing team at AmorePacific Friday, the majority of men tends to prefer all-in-one products, like a toner and aftershave in one. It added that products like Sun BB cream, a moisturizing lotion with sunblock, was one of its best sellers last year.

“I have become more image conscious for the last five years because I could feel my skin drying out and shrinking. Since then, I have bought necessary skin care products myself and tried different brands to see which one suits me best. I don’t even mind using a three-step regime now,” Park Gyu-bum, a 30-year-old office worker said.

“I think men should also care about themselves like women, and I see more of my guy friends beginning to care about their appearance.”

Industry insiders predict the future of the male grooming market will continue to grow and will likely center on multi-purpose products.

“Demand for male basic skin care products has gradually increased in general, but I am not sure about those step-by-step ones, which many male consumers still think is too much,” said Kim Yu-ri, a PR specialist from the skin care brand, ULOS.

“An increasing number of men want good quality products just like women. But since only 5 percent of our total sales are from male grooming products, we do not expect the market to grow significantly but rather gradually over time,” said a marketing manager at Somang Cosmetics.

While women still dominate the beauty world, cosmetic manufacturers say the increase in male cosmetic lines is worth noting and plan to market their brands accordingly to attract new customers and boost sales.
