thieves_01.jpegWell Go USA has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Dong-hoo Choi's heist film "The Thieves," which opened in Korea over the summer and became the highest-grossing film in the country's history. Its North American theatrical release will be Oct. 12.

"The Thieves," which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, features some of Korea's biggest stars, including Jung Jae-Lee and Hyse-su Kim, as five elite thieves working together to steal the Tear of the Sun, a massive diamond worth 20 million dollars locked inside a casino vault. The team must break into the vault and steal the diamond without attracting the attention of the police while internal betrayal and mischief threatens the operation.

“After we saw the film at the Festival we knew it would be a perfect addition to our fall slate,” said Well Go USA president Doris Pfardrescher. “Dong-hoo Choi is a rare talent and his filmmaking style is a perfect fit for North American audiences.”

Pfardrescher negotiated the deal with Judy Ahn of Showbox/Mediaplex Inc.

Well Go USA specializes in bringing independent Asian cinema to North America, and it has released the war drama "The Front Line" and the Oscar-nominated short "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale." Well Go recently acquired the Chinese remake of "Dangerous Liaisons" at Toronto.

This scene was when Ryu han took a 180 turn from an idiot to a guy with a mission... he cut his hair and used the suit he wore when he first came into the village

‘The Thieves’ steals Korean box office record

20121003000079_0.jpg?pp=2012082011

Director Choe Dong-hoon’s box office smash hit “The Thieves” has now become the top-selling Korean movie of all time.

As of Tuesday, the movie featuring a star-studded cast set a box office record for Korean films by drawing in 13,020,393 movie goers to the theaters, stealing the top spot from director Bong Joon-ho’s 2006 sci-fi thriller “The Host.”

Official box office figures showed that the movie has earned approximately 93.6 billion won ($84 million), surpassing the previous admissions leader “The Host,” which earned about 78.5 billion won.

The film’s domestic success and strong box office numbers have received widespread international attention as well. “The Thieves,” set in Macau, was released on 32 screens in Hong Kong last month, making it the second-largest Hong Kong release for a Korean film following “Haeundae,” which was released on 36 screens.

The distribution rights to the film were sold all over Asia including Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Thailand and Vietnam. The movie also premiered in North America at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

“The Thieves” is an action-packed heist film about a team of Korean and Chinese thieves plotting to steal the “Tear of the Sun,” a $20 million diamond necklace that is kept guarded in a casino safe in Macau. It features some of Korea’s top actors and actresses such as Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Kim Soo-hyun, Giana Jun and many others.

James Cameron’s Hollywood blockbuster “Avatar,” which attracted 13.6 million locals, still sits at the top in the country’s all-time box office sales that include non-domestic films.

I want Soo HYun to do another drama too.  an action packed thriller would be nice or he could do another sageuk...  But I doubt if he'll do another sageuk too soon after TMETS.  It's sort of hard to top TMETS...

[Entertainment News Station] "The Thieves" caught in issue for summing up audience

photo258581.jpg

There is an issue about the new record made by "The Thieves".

Show Box revealed on the 2nd, "In the company standards, the movie went over 13,020,393 and beat "The Host" of 13,019,740 in 2006". However, according to the Korean Films Commission, "The Thieves" gathered a number of 12,973,390 until the 2nd. If this is true, "The Thieves" hasn't jumped over "The Host" yet. This means Show Box has included the numbers from the theaters that haven't signed in with the KFC. KFC claims, "99.9% of all theaters in Korea have been signed in with KFC from the year 2012 onwards". Considering that the theaters not included are very low, the issue with "The Thieves" can only be brought up. It has also bought unfavorable claims that it takes over more than 100 theaters during the week when there is not many audiences.
