Queen-to-be Mary
Double duty for Mary as she returns Down Under with twins

21 NOVEMBER 2011

On the one hand, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark were on official duties as they began their tour of Australia.

But the royal couple, who are known for putting family first, were also busy entertaining twins Josephine and Vincent during the visit.

The Danish Royals have returned to Mary's homeland for a six day tour, and it seems the down-to-earth couple will be balancing work and family whilst on the road.

Joining them were their adorable 11-month old tots who were described by their father as "miracles times two" when they were born in January of this year.

And in a nod to their mum's roots, the twins were clutching a stuffed koala and kangaroo –a gift from Australia's Governor General, Quentin Bryce - who also attended their opening photo call.

There was no sign of the couple's other two children five-year-old Christian and Isabella, who is three.

They spent their first day in typical Aussie style, enjoying a beach stroll and a barbecue before zipping round the harbour on a boat.

With official duties and children taken care of, they got into the competitive spirit as they hopped onto some excercise bikes at the during the launch of an arts project.

Australian politician, Barry O'Farrell, was on hand to welcome Mary and her husband to Sydney and had glowing words for his guests .

This is the royals first official visit to Australia since 2008.

Mary's grace, beauty and professionalism have won over her the

people of her new homeland, with one poll finding 75 per cent of Danes

believed she would make a good queen.

Well wishers greet Mary in Melbourne

Updated: 17:24, Thursday November 24, 2011

An enthusiastic crowd of royal watchers, schoolgirls and mothers with babies have greeted Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in Melbourne.

The princess's staff were kept busy, retrieving dozens of bouquets and children's cuddly toys and one special gift from a Melbourne mum.

Natassia Iatrou of East Malvern gave Mary a copy of her daughter's favourite book, which Australia's most notable royal accepted gratefully.

'That's absolutely lovely,' Mary said.

The book Ten Little Fingers by Australian author Mem Fox is about babies born all over the world who have at least one thing in common - their fingers and toes.

'It's my daughter Chloe's favourite book and I wanted Mary to have a copy because she is clearly a wonderful mother,' Ms Iatrou said.

For Ms Iatrou said Thursday's brush with the future queen of Denmark wasn't her first.

She was also at the same pub in Sydney on the same night the Princess met her husband Crown Prince Frederik during the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

More than 300 people gathered beside the Yarra River to greet Princess Mary, who obliged by taking almost 20 minutes to walk 100m.

Among them was Sue Ziebell from North Balwyn who said she had been looking forward to a close-up look at the Princess for years.

'I'm a very keen Mary watcher,' she said.

'She's so natural and so elegant.'

The Princess, a mother of four, showed special interest in small children and babies in the crowd, stopping to pose for photos and chat.

Accompanied by her husband, who accepted a more secondary nodding and waving role, she went on to visit a Lego display.

The royal couple arrived inside Melbourne's ArtPlay building to a roar of noise.

More than 75 children from three schools had spent the afternoon building a sustainable city display out of 500kg of LEGO blocks.

The pre-school students were huddled over two long tables and fiddling with the interlocking blocks, eager to show off their creations, as Princess Mary and her husband took turns mingling with them.

Two boys soon caught the attention of the princess with their LEGO flag pole flying the Danish flag.

One boy handed her the flag, made of red and white bricks, and she smiled and thanked him for the gift.

Other students were playing with LEGO windmills and turbines while a few children explained to the princess how they made a robotic LEGO car.

The princess shook one girl's hand and as she turned away the girl squealed and covered her mouth in excitement.

The couple appeared to consider for a moment if they would join in with the fun as they stood over three large buckets filled with plastic bricks from the Danish toy company.

They soon moved on and headed for the door.

But the children then surprised the couple with two parting gifts.

Prince Frederik was given a miniature LEGO replica of a W-Class tram that Melbourne is famous for and the prince seemed especially impressed by the effort.

The princess was given a bouquet of red roses, also made of LEGO, which were displayed proudly within a plastic vase designed like the Danish flag.

Two school girls then wrapped their arms around the princess in a big hug, urging her to stay a bit longer.

Princess Mary hugged them back, turned and waved good-bye to all the children.

The kids waved back, some clapping furiously and hooting in delight.

'Inspired' Princess Mary wows the crowds in Broadmeadows

November 26, 2011 - 4:25PM

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark says she is inspired by a national cyberbullying program that is teaching Australian children to be safe and responsible online.

Princess+Mary+Prince+Frederik+Princess+Mary+4RvwNeQv6UZl.jpg

The princess has met with key political and business leaders, including Prime Minister Julia Gillard, at an Alannah and Madeline Foundation lunch in Melbourne’s north.

Princess Mary, dressed in an off-white dress with a tan belt on Saturday, is the international patron of the foundation, a national charity protecting children from violence.

She said keeping people, especially children, safe from violence was one of society’s most important responsibilities.

The foundation this year launched the eSmart program, with the aim of rolling it out to all Australian schools.

Princess Mary said the foundation’s vision was to introduce the program into community libraries and centres, ensuring all children had access to it.

‘‘eSmart is a world-leading system and one which Australia should be extremely proud of and one which I’m sure, and I’ve no doubt myself will take home, and with inspiration from here, talk with the actors in Denmark that are already active in the area that maybe can use a little bit of extra inspiration,’’ she said.

Dozens of people braved persistent rain to catch a glimpse of the princess as she arrived with her husband Crown Prince Frederik at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Melbourne’s north.

Children from Mount Ridley College handed the royal Danish couple flowers and gifts before crowding around and posing for what could have been a class photo.

Prep student Paige Camilleri, 5, said she had practised how she would greet Princess Mary with her parents.Caleb Baker, 10, held aloft a welcome sign in English.

‘‘At the start I was a bit nervous but then I got used to it as she came down the aisle. She was very nice and she looked really pretty and all that,’’ he said coyly.

Frederik and Mary attended the Starry Starry Night charity ball which raised money for the Alannah and Madeline Foundation in Melbourne on Saturday night. Princess Mary wore a one-shoulder, full-length gown in a grayish-blue hue that was flatteringly cinched in at the waist.

Thus ends the whirlwind seven days touring Australia. Throughout, Crown Princess Mary wowed everyone who caught a glimpse of her.

“She’s just so beautiful, the way that she held herself, what she was wearing, she’s just stunning and she was just so nice to everyone there,” said Annie Turner who was one of the many people in the crowds during the final leg of this tour.

The royal couple will remain in the country for a few more days, spending private time in Mary’s native Tasmania.
