IU transforms into an ‘ugly girl’ for “Dream High”

After hearing that IU would be playing an ‘ugly girl’ for the upcoming drama, ”Dream High“, fans have been curious to see how the swan would regress into an ugly duckling.

On December 28th, IU’s disguise as a ’sushi girl’ was finally unveiled!

In the pictures revealed, the star is seen wearing a large sushi girl costume. She has transformed into an ‘ugly girl’ who is chubby, wears black horn-rimmed glasses, and has a messy mop of hair.

After seeing the pictures, the netizens wrote, ‘Is it really IU?’, ‘I can’t see it’, and ‘I’m looking forward to IU’s transformation’.

“Dream High” will premiere on January 3rd through KBS 2TV and January 24th on KBS World (with subtitles).

“Dream High” rewritten to give IU a larger role

IU has quickly become a respected figure in the industry, sweeping up awards left and right and coming up as one of the hottest artists of the year. It seems her influence has also managed to seep into KBS’s upcoming drama, “Dream High“.

Despite there being five other leading cast members - Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Suzy, Kim Soo Hyun, Eunjung - the writer and producers were enamored with IU’s exceptional acting skills. Consequently, screenwriter Park Hye Ryun decided to rewrite the script in order to give IU a larger role, and thus reflect IU’s real-life popularity.

The producers are currently in talks with her agency, in order to confirm details on the longer filming requirements that come with the larger role.

Source: TV Report via Nate

[ UPDATE ]

In response to fans’ concerns, Star News contacted the producers of “Dream High”, who asserted that TV Report’s story was false.

Dream High’s representative clarified, “We are fully aware that IU’s popularity has been soaring lately, but giving her a larger role in the drama is impossible at this time. We’ve written up to six episodes worth of scenarios now, and her role in the drama has not changed before or after she gained popularity.”

They continued, “IU is certainly one of the hottest figures in the industry lately, but because there are so many other leading roles, it’s not possible to stretch or shrink the roles. IU is also quite busy herself, so she probably would not be able to handle the schedule. The only thing possible for revision at the moment is the script for her character.”

How much did it cost to dress up IU for “Dream High”?

The cost of IU’s transformation for her role in “Dream High” has been estimated to be around $60,000 USD.

Producers of “Dream High” revealed that in order to costume IU into her chubby character, $50,000 USD was spent on her fat suit, along with an extra $2,000 USD for makeup spent per episode. Six episodes have cost the drama a total of $60,000 USD so far.

Her transformation also takes over five hours, and coming out of her outfit takes an additional two.

Thankfully, her efforts aren’t wasted, as she’s been dominating the charts lately with her song “Someday” for the drama’s OST.

The R&B song was sung by IU in her audition scene on the January 4th episode. Written and produced by Park Jin Young, the song marks IU’s first hit of 2011, continuing her streak of success from last year.

IU falls for Wooyoung on “Dream High”

The January 10th episode of KBS2TV’s “Dream High” saw the budding romance between IU’s plump character ‘Pilsook‘ and 2PM Wooyoung’s character, ‘Jason‘.

Pilsook handed Jason a water bottle after dance rehearsal and Jason told her, “Thank you.” Pilsook was overjoyed by his nice reply.

Later in the episode, the school was giving out their uniforms and when they came across IU’s, they said, “Is this a blanket or a skirt? Owner of this XXL uniform, step forward!”

Pilsook instantly ran away and hid so that no one could point their finger at her for being the ‘XXL girl’. Then, Jacon took the uniform and said, “Mine.”

Insung, who was giving them out, said, “It’s a skirt. It’s for girls. Boys have to wear pants.” Jason replied, “Do you divide girls and boys by skirts and pants? So I guess those girls are all boys,” he pointed to girls wearing pants. He added, “Why are you so concerned? I’m saying it’s mine.”

Jason gave the uniform to Pilsook and then fled. Pilsook was touched by the kind gesture and shyly and quietly said, “Thank you,” but no one could hear her.

[spoiler: Dream High] Wooyoung performs a duet with…

Previous episodes led to this sweet buildup in plot, and fans of the ‘milky couple’ were ecstatic to see Jason and Pilsook finally go on their first date.

This week, ‘Jason’ caught ‘Pil Sook’ dropping chocolates in his cubby, and asked her if she would like to go sing karaoke with him. She agrees, and to her delight, finds that she has the best day of her life there – the two ended up singing every song listed in the karaoke book!

Ultimately, Jason wants to team up with Pil Sook for her entrance class performance, but he has to figure out how to overcome a certain clause – he’s of a different class, and so he may not be allowed to sing with her. So tune in to January 24th’s episode to see how he does it eventually.

IU believed that her part on “Dream High” would be smaller

IU started out as a small character on “Dream High“, but as the series progressed, her ‘ugly duckling’ persona quickly became an important role.

IU’s representative spoke with Newsen on January 25th, and said: “When we first got the synopsis, we knew this character would be a fat and ugly one who transforms into a pretty girl. But as the character became more developed, her part definitely got bigger.”

The rep added, “The script isn’t always completed before filming starts, so we don’t know how things got developed to this point; still, her part on the show definitely became bigger than we expected. She’s very happy about it and is having fun.”

He concluded, “She comes back as the beautiful IU from the chubby Pilsook, although she said it’s easier to act as the chubby Pilsook. Please look forward to her acting because she is doing her best.”

IU reveals her “Dream High” character’s virtual diet

Singer/actress IU revealed the secret diet plan behind her character’s weight loss in KBS’s “Dream High” while walking reporters through the film set during the drama’s press conference on January 25th.

Fans immediately noticed a diet plan scrawled on the school’s blackboard amidst several other lunch menus for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cuisine.

The special ‘diet menu’ consists of salad, a boiled egg, boiled sweet potatoes, and eight baby tomatoes, all amounting to exactly 346 calories.

Fans speculated this to be the diet plan used by IU’s character in losing weight for her transformation. Although it’s certainly interesting to look at, they expressed their sorrow in ‘Pil Sook’ having to go through such a strict menu.

[spoiler: Dream High] “Pil Sook” succeeds with her diet + IU’s viewing habits

Singer IU, who’s currently playing the role of ‘Pil Sook’ in KBS’s “Dream High,” has been earning much curiosity from viewers on how her diet will be affecting her love line with her ‘Milky Couple’ partner, 2PM’s Wooyoung.

Ever since her appearance in the first episode, ‘Pil Sook’ was known for her chubby body. Producers kept the anticipation for her eventual transformation high, leading viewers to begin wondering when exactly the change will take place. ‘Pil Sook’ is currently the best loved character of the show, with many finding her innocent school girl crush on ‘Jason’ endearing.

With the help of Teacher Maeng, ‘Pil Sook’ finally takes the first step towards her diet and sets a goal of losing 30 kg within a 200 day time period.

Her diet was shot in exactly one day, as a representative on set revealed, “IU showed off impressive jump roping skills and gave a victory sign towards the camera even after the recording was over. Her bright image gave us further anticipation towards Pil Sook’s transformation.”

The transformation will be unveiled in the drama’s eighth episode scheduled for January 31st.

Meanwhile, on January 27th, IU was interviewed by reporters of SBS’s “One Night In TV Entertainment” and revealed herself to be an avid fan of “Hometown at Six,” a KBS program that aims to bring back busy city dwellers to their hometowns, as well as introduce new culture and re-awaken the importance of enjoying life. She stated, “My grandmother loves ‘Hometown at Six,’ so I watch it as well.”

[spoiler: Dream High] IU finally makes her transformation!

IU finally kicked off her diet in the eighth episode of KBS 2TV’s “Dream High“!

The decision behind her diet came when ‘Pil Sook‘ was embarrassed by the rejection she faced from her crush, ‘Jason‘ (Wooyoung).

She had finally mustered enough courage to confess her feelings by writing the lyrics for “Crush” on a post-it note and delivering it to him. But unfortunately, Jason turned away from her love, and said “I like you, but not in the way you’re feeling.”

Despite being rejected, Pil Sook took comfort in knowing that her name would be listed in the credits for her CM song. But when she finds out that that Iria’s name replaced hers instead, the student is devastated.

Jason eventually returns to her and gives her hope by revealing, “I keep noticing you. What kind of idiot would go to a karaoke with a kid he hates? If I had to choose, I’m on the side of liking you.”

Filled with a new-found determination, Pil Sook urges, “In exactly 200 days, I’ll lose weight and come back prettier than ever. Then can you answer my confession then?” Jason, who knows the story behind Iria CM mixup, agrees.

She seeks the help of Teacher Maeng, who encourages her by saying, “There is not one ugly woman in this world. Only lazy women.” By following her meal plan and rope skipping everyday, Pil Sook finally appears before Jason with a slimmer image, who’s immediately taken aback and blurts, “Are you really Pil Sook?”

Now that her final transformation is complete, viewers can now look forward to the developing love line between the two characters.

IU is surprising us all by her great acting skills. Most newbies you expect to be flat; however, IU's the total opposite. My fav scene is her on the stairs of the karaoke bar. She was so convincingly conflicted between her two choices: Jason vs. practice. I can watch the scene over and over again. =) I hope that Jason will wake up soon and rise up to be the wonderful person that Pilsukie sees him to be!!

IU defends Pilsook, her character in “Dream High”

After running into some criticism, IU herself started defending the character she plays in “Dream High“!

In “Dream High”, the singer turned actress plays a fat high school girl who gets largely ignored due to her appearance. After getting rejected from her crush, Jason, played by 2PM’s Wooyoung, she finally finds motivation to lose weight and turns into a pretty and cute girl.

However, instead of saying only good things to her boy crush, she throws some harsh words at him, afraid that he will lose his focus in becoming a top star.

IU revealed on her me2day, “This is Pilsook’s last appearance before her transformation! Please don’t hate her so much. She only said those things because she adores Jason. She did become harsh and critical after her diet, but she did not become a ‘cold city woman’. Woo-U (Wooyoung & IU) fighting!”

Netizens commented, “How can we hate her? She’s so cute” and “I’m quite surprised that she acts better than expected. I hope Jason and Pilsook have a happy ending“.
