Plot:

A model female prisoner receives a special leave from prison. While on her leave the woman meets a man who is a fugitive from the police. He is wanted by the police for producing counterfeit money. A love story then takes place over three days

Story:

Anna, an immigrant from China, has been imprisoned after killing her abusive husband in self-defense. Convicted at the age of 23, Anna has been away from the outside world for 7 years.  

Hoon, an attractive and charming Korean immigrant, has made his living since arriving in the U.S. as an escort for middle-aged Korean women. One of those women, Ok-Ja, has recently become obsessed with Hoon and has decided to leave her marriage to be with him.  

When Anna's mother dies, she is granted a furlough from prison and embarks on a trip to Seattle for the funeral.    On the run from Ok-Ja's angry husband, Hoon boards Anna's bus and approaches her to help pay for his ticket.    Anna gives Hoon the money and the two of them end up sharing adjoining seats for their trip.    

Upon arriving in Seattle, Anna feels like a stranger amongst her family. Uncomfortable at home, she leaves and tries to reconnect with her hometown. But it is all in vain. She contemplates going back to prison early before the funeral.    It is at the bus terminal that she runs Hoon again.  

Hoon sees Anna as an easy target and persuades her to spend the day with him. Like a couple sightseeing, they explore the city. Hoon�s goofy personality helps Anna calm down, and Hoon finds himself attracted to mysterious Anna, who is unlike any other woman he has met.

Despite the escalating drama in Hoon's life and the sadness in Anna's situation, the two strangers begin to connect in a deeper and more meaningful way.    Through this connection, they end up helping each other escape the threats of the present and the mistakes of the past and ultimatelygain hope for their future.

1. "Late Autumn" is a remake of the 1966 film "Late Autumn" directed by Lee Man Hui

2. Unlike the original version which was set in South Korea, the 2010 version will be set in America.

6. Filming ended on March 1st on Whidbey Island in Island County, Washington State. The final scene filmed was the actual last scene for the movie, which is the epilogue scene involving Tang Wei. Actor Hyun Bin was also present for the filming of the last scene and once that scene wrapped, staff and cast members celebrated.

Hyun Bin has announced his next role, and like Jeon Do-yeon's latest, it will be a remake of a 1960s film. This one is the 1966 classic Late Autumn (also called Manchu, 만추), by "genius director" Lee Man-hee. Currently, actress Tang Wei (Lust, Caution) is said to be considering the female lead role.

The remake is a co-production with an American production company and will be filmed entirely in the U.S. with English dialogue. (Eep! How good is Hyun Bin’s English?)

The original film Late Autumn, according to this (English-language) review by JoongAng Daily, is a "masterpiece with a place in Korean film history. It heralded the beginning of Korean modernist movies." It tells the story of a short-lived love between a woman who is granted a special leave from prison where she is a model inmate and a man who is on the run for counterfeiting money.

Unfortunately, the original has been lost and no known copies exist. However, a remake of the same name was produced in 1982, starring a younger Kim Hye-ja (Mother), who won a best actress award at the Manila International Film Festival the following year for her performance.

According to a representative of Hyun Bin's management company, the actor is currently busy studying English for the role and is about to finalize contracts, while Tang Wei's casting is still being negotiated. The production had at one point considered A-listers Jang Dong-gun and Lee Junki before confirming Hyun Bin.

Directing the remake is Kim Tae-yong of Family Ties. Kim has already left Korea for Seattle to prepare filming, which is to begin at the end of November or early December.

Casting has been confirmed and Hyun Bin will in fact be acting alongside Lust, Caution actress Tang Wei in his new movie, the remaking of 1966’s classic Late Autumn (aka Manchu).

The plot features a three-day love story between a woman who is let out of prison on a special leave and a young man who is on the run from pursuers. The original, now lost, is considered one of the best of its lauded director Lee Man-hee’s prolific but short-lived career.

It had been remade twice before (in 1975 as Promise of the Flesh and 1981 as Late Autumn) and even once in Japan as 1972’s Promise. (In fact, Promise of the Flesh was directed by the famous Kim Ki-young, who had previously made The Housemaid, which is regarded as one of Korea’s best films and is the source material for Jeon Do-yeon’s upcoming remake.)

Late Autumn/Manchu will be shot in the U.S. by Korean director Kim Tae-young, but both stars will be acting in English. CEO Lee Joo-ik of production company Boram Films said, “We’ve thought carefully about what we can do to make our film connect with the rest of the world, and it seems like just yesterday that we’d gone to the U.S. to location scout five years ago, but now that we’re really going to the States to begin filming, the feeling is remarkable.”

The film will begin shooting at the end of the month and release in 2010.

Chinese actress Tang Wei has decided to appear in a remake of Korean film "Manchu", according the film's producer Boram Films on Thursday.

The actress will be starring with Korean actor Hyun Bin in the film, directed by Kim Tae-yong who won several international awards for his 2006 film "Family Ties".

"Manchu", first released in 1966 by legendary Korean filmmaker Lee Man-hee, is a classic Korean film that has spawned three remakes over the years: "Promise of the Body" in 1975, "Manchu" in 1981 and Japanese movie "Promise" in 1972.

The story is about a brief, passionate love between a well-behaved female prisoner out on special leave and a fugitive man.

The remake, co-produced with an American production company, will be shot in the U.S. and filmed in English.

"It is a fun challenge to re-tell the story of two closed-minded people in 2009 and in a new space that is America," director Kim was quoted as saying.

Tang rose to instant stardom after appearing in Ang Lee's espionage thriller film "Lust, Caution" in 2007.

"Manchu", set for release in 2010, will go into shoot later this month.

"Five years ago, we first visited the United States for location hunting, hoping to find a niche to communicate this film for global audiences,” said Lee Joo-ik, the head of Boram. “We’re very moved that the film is ready to go into shooting."

The film will be released later this year.

In the movie, titled The Late Autumn, (although IMDB has the title as "Full Autumn") the main female character, Tang Wei, comes to town for her mother’s funeral. It’s here that she meets Hyun Bin. “Like a couple sightseeing, they explore the city,” the one-sheet on the movie states.

Today the movie is being shot at the Tractor Tavern. Tomorrow, we’re told that they'll be at the Ballard Nail Studio on 24th Ave NW, just across the street from the new QFC. Beth, the owner of Aster Coffee, says the production crew is expected to arrive late morning with filming starting mid-afternoon.

Neighbors and businesses were notified that "Late Autumn" (listed as "Full Autumn" on IMDb) will be shooting scenes in the area on Friday, January 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A location manager tells me film trucks will be at Gas Works Park and plans include filming a “Ride the Duck” boat travelling across the Fremont Bridge.

Variety says the film is a Korean remake of Lee Man-hee's 1966 drama "Full Autumn" and stars Wei Tang ('Lust, Caution') and Bin Hyeon. It's about a woman (Tang) who is released from prison to attend her mother's funeral and along the way meets an escort (Hyeon) on the run from a jealous husband.

Filming is expected to wrap in early February with a target for release at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in May

South Korean heartthrob shooting film in Seattle

Last month we told you about "Late Autumn," the South Korean film that is shooting in Seattle.

What we didn't know then is that the star of the film, actor Hyun Bin, is something of a South Korean heartthrob.

South Korean media have been swooning about Hyun's project in Seattle for a little while now, it appears. Hyun, 27, broke many Korean girls' hearts when it was revealed that he was dating Song Hye Gyo, a popular Korean actress.

Today, Seattleites have spotted them down on Western Avenue, near the exit from the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The crew will also be at Pike Place Market.

A call to production staff got me little to pass on about what exactly they're filming at these locations. Citing actors' contracts and the typical concern about attracting disruptive crowds, the woman I spoke with did not want to say much beyond the fact that -- yes -- that's the "Last Autumn" crew on Western Avenue and the Market.

She did say there's a news release coming out with more details. But no word on when that's due.

If you think you see anything else from these guys, feel free to let me know. We'll keep you posted.

Update: "Late Autumn" has been making the rounds. As Fremont Universe noted last month, the crew's been in the neighborhood.

Microsoft reporter Nick Eaton said he spotted them underneath the Aurora Bridge near the Fremont Troll Saturday night and chatted up a crewmember. Reader Ryan Healy got a picture of that shoot:

Korean movie filming on 18th Ave

CDNews member murph posted in the forum about the movie-making activity near Jefferson Street today. We made our way over there and found that it's a Korean movie called Late Autumn which has been filming around the city.

Today they're filming a scene in front of a house on 18th just a few doors south of Jefferson.

There's a big crew on scene, and a production assistant told me that there's recognizable stars there if you know anything about Korean films.

Note that 18th is blocked off between Jefferson and Alder until after 7 pm tonight.

The film industry is already preparing for next year. Many renowned filmmakers have returned to Korea to produce movies about war and sequels to hit movies.

Director Lim Kwon-taek will produce his 101st movie �Scooping Up The Moonlight.� Directors Kim Tae-yong and Lim Sang-soo will produce remakes of �Late Autumn� by Lee Man-hee and �The Housemaid� of Kim Ki-young, respectively. The remake of �Late Autumn� will be directed by Kim Tae-yong, who also directed �The Birth Of A Family� in 2006. It is a story about a female inmate who obtains parole for good behavior and falls in love with a man who is wanted by police for forgery.

�Late Autumn� continues to inspire many filmmakers even after many years. Director Kim Ki-young introduced his version in 1975 under the title �The Promise Of The Body� while director Kim Soo-yong unveiled his own version in 1981. Actor Hyun-bin will play the forgery criminal who in the original version was played by actor Shin Sung-il, while the role of the female inmate who was originally played by Moon Jung-sook will be portrayed by Chinese actress Tang Wei. The shoot began last month, and the movie is scheduled to open next year.

In his latest project, a movie called Late Autumn, he is sported with a mustache and beard!!

Production stills of the movie is just released and I expect more in the coming weeks

Filming of the movie started last year and casts and crews flew to Seattle to shoot some scenes. If Im not mistaken this movie is about she, being a newly released prisoner and him, being on the run.

They meet and fall in love with each other within 3 days.

Still cut from Hyun Bin & Tang Wei’s new movie revealed

A still cut from new movie staring Hyun Bin and Tang Wei has been released. The movie was filmed from Jan. 12th in Seattle and it is about half way done. The movie is about a 3 day encounter of a secretive man and woman in Seattle. The

movie will illustrate a short but destined encounter of a Korean man and Chinese woman.

The movie is scheduled to open on second half of 2010.

Hyun Bin (Friend, Our Legend, I’m Happy) and Tang Wei (Lust, Caution) have been filming their new movie Late Autumn (aka Manchu, 만추) in the U.S. earlier and the production firm has released first stills of the leads.

Late Autumn is a Korean-American co-production and a remake of the 1966 classic. It tells the acquaintance of a woman granted a special leave from prison for her good conduct with a young man who is on the run from pursuers for counterfeiting money, and their 3-day love story that unfolds in Seattle. Both stars will be acting in English.

In the stills, Hyun Bin has sported some facial stubble to project a more mature and masculine image; while Tang Wei similarly looks lonely and desolate with her pulled back hair and winter coat. How will this pair who have experienced various vicissitudes of life meet and fall in love?

The film will be released in mid/late 2010 in Korea, and will thereafter be screened at various reputable film festivals worldwide.
