Cause sometimes...film is just better than digital...

Hello Everyone!

welcome to the first Film Photography Thread!

I decided to take the initiative and create this thread because I doubt anyone else would...plus it was mentioned quite a few times in the For the Lovers of Lomography thread. Also there's an official DSLR thread and an official What Dslr I should Buy. So Mods, if this already posted please close this then :]

This is a place to discuss film photography such as : different methods, equipment, processes, tips, extra info, help, and to brag show our pictures :]

I'll add to this thread later.

Please treat this thread and others nicely and no stealing pictures without permission.

Thank you!

YOU ARE THE BEST strawberry.llamas

A+ for taking initiative.

And for those of you who think.. "wtf haven't they heard of digital?"

nah..we're not ancient and behind. FILM IS NOT DEAD.

It's another photographic experience that many are missing out on : )

and let's hope no one comes in to argue whether analogue or digital is the superior!

Ahhaaaa Finally a pure film thread! :3

I was actually going around tonight playing Santa; bring presents to people's houses. I had my camera strapped around my neck and took a picture of their reaction.

Need to develop some rolls.

I'll contribute later on.

haha yay! So nervous that people would bring their virtual pitch forks/torches and kill this thread :x

miiloverx2 haha thank you!!! First A+ woohoo (i know, pretty sad :P) I hope people who try to pick up a fight does not come in either. It's bad mojo. Also I agree, I think everyone should learn how to use film and all that jazz before picking up a DSLR. It makes the learning transition a bit smoother. Well, that's what I think.

jxmode haha i can't wait to see their reactions as well :P. I love candid shots. They're the best. Do you just scan them on your scanner?? Or do you get them placed on a cd when they are developed?? Not sure if i should start doing this...it costs me around $12 to get 1 roll of prints.

8D_heeeeeeeee Hm...i have developed black and white rolls before. And printed them on an enlarger at school. It's cheaper and I get to play with the settings. Burning and dodging different areas. <- it's a pain in the richard simmons...but it's worth it though hahaha. For colour, I get it developed at a photography hobby store. I heard it's way too complicated and you need COMPLETE darkness. Unlike the second part of b&w, where you can use the safety lights or red lights w.e. :P

I also agree. this thread feels like home <3

leeahh That's a beautiful shot! You have an Asahi Spotmatic II?? That's cool~ My dad has an Asahi Spotmatic F. I don't use that one...I use my dad's canon ftb-n. I love it hahha.

wiwi_an hopefully, film will stay alive. I'm glad that's it a fad right now though. It's giving awareness to people, so hopefully more film :P (think polaroid i guess). But it's annoying that people have no idea what to do...like all about the f/stop and all that jazz. Bleh hahaha i guess i feel like a sour grape cuz it's like that situation of "I found it first and I don't want other people who can't appreciate it to discover it". Or like an unknown band that becomes mainstream.

Anyways~ I'll stop talking :P. I"ll try to add some pictures as well~ I hope everybody has /had a happy christmas, kwanza, hanukkah(sp?), winter solstice, and whatever the hell people celebrate in winter. And a happy new year :P

Haha sweet, a thread dedicated to film photography! I personally did not like film photography in the beginning, because I just took the course because many of my friends took it. But after years of learning about it, I found myself developing quite a talent in this field. It's really fun and I just love the whole experience. I especially like it when you're in the darkroom, and the photo you're developing gradually pops up. It gives you such a sense of accomplishment! 8P

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.

I got really annoyed when one of my friends started going crazy for the Diana Instant Back when they didn't even know what the Diana+ was or what Lomography was about or what film was all about. Just because they hear the news about Polaroid stopping its film production, people became interested in instant photography just because it was the "IN" thing. It's almost like it was only after MJ's (RIP) death that people really started to appreciate him more and was all like "This Is It was the best movie ever blah blah blah" (but this is going off topic).

Anyhow.. yea I think I'm the same as you... I mean if people are interested in it, by all means! But I don't want them to just treat film photography as a fad and not take it seriously and buy different cameras and equipments to leave in the back of the closet once they're bored of it (BUT WHO GETS BORED OF FILM! :P)

Oh now I'm ranting.. sorry

To contribute...

Here's an old shot from my (hardly ever used) Nikon F75 with EB3 xpro-ed :P This was actually one of my first tries in cross-processing! Was pretty pleased with the outcome .. though I have yet to find the perfect film and exposure combo.... ah

leeahh love the double exposure even though it was accidental! An awesome Christmas shot!

Shellymelly - I never got to experience what it's like to work in a darkroom : ( our art teacher back in HS promised us that she would fight for a darkroom (even if it could only fit 1 person) at the new arts complex being built for our school. But at last, she took back her words saying that the chemicals were bad for us. Heck, I would do anything to at least TRY to develop my own film! :(

Shellymelly My school have a photography subject for it's senior students, which used to have a darkroom. Unfortunatly my school dropped film developing from the curriculum, due to cost reasons, a year before I was old enough to take up the subject. You have no idea how upset I was about that. Curse them stingy teachers, curse them!

!

leeahh Love the night photos you and Lama take!

Thanks for starting this thread!

I love film but I'm not really big into Lomography (why pay $50 for a plastic camera when you can find one in a goodwill bin for $1 that does the same thing?), so I was never really active there.

What does everyone shoot? I do both 35mm and medium format (645 for now). I sort of collect and sell cameras & gear like crazy, but my main shooters are Nikon FM, Nikon FE, Nikon EM, and Mamiya 645.

wiwi_an ty ty :D

strawberry.llamas ooh! I have a Spotmatic F too! passed down to me by a family friend along with some lenses and filters :D

Shellymelly darkroom  I've never been able to develop my own roll but I have spent hours in the darkroom enlarging prints for uni! gosh it always took me forever to get the contrasts and borders right! but you just feel soo accomplished once you do get it right

miiloverx2 ty! haha and I totally know what you mean! a few people come to mind... ah but yeah more demand for film is always good for us B) increased demand -> increase in supply! *fingers-crossed* and woww the colours are crazayy in that shot!

8D_heeeeeeeee thank you~ he's my inspiration yo!!

echoism a lot of people feel that way towards the Lomography brand and their.. shall i say.. exploitative ways? but really they've done good in getting people into film again :] haha a Lomography cam was my first camera and it's what got me into film photography really. I love my Diana ^^

I mainly shoot 35mm and medium format. just recently got hold of Polaroid cams so yeah been shooting instant too :] I collect as well but my main ones are my Asahi Pentax SPII, Diana, and Olympus Trip 35. really nice composition! I love the DOF and the texture! which film did you use? :]

I can't argue with that! I just feel that the whole "don't think, just shoot!" thing sort of undermines a lot of the technical principles of photography. But I think maybe I'm just a whiny old-schooler, haha.

I used Kodak 400UC (old expired film). I'm really loving it more than the more recent Kodak films.

echoism can you give me the main differences between the Nikon FM and FE? I'm using the Nikon EM for several years now, so i was thinking to get myself a FM or FE....

There's honestly not too much difference. The FE is sort of an updated version of the FM. Differences:

FM

LED exposure reading

Completely manual

Can shoot at any shutter speed without batteries

All metal body so heavier

FE

Needle exposure reading

Has an automatic mode

Can only shoot at 1/90 without batteries

+/- exposure dial

I tend to use the FM more because I like the weight and the LED readout more, especially in dark scenes, but if you're using the automatic mode on the FE, then obviously, it doesn't matter too much. I like to choose my shutter speeds manually and calculate under/overexposure steps with ISO so I don't really need the fancy stuff on the FE, but if you like stuff a little more automated like the EM, it's good.

i'm a newbie with the developing pictures, i've only tried BW photos and i forgot everything ><"

i have a few questions about cross-processing...is it only for slide film? can i just go to a photo shop and they will do it for me? And any terms i have to use? And is it more expensive?

thanks so much~

i have my toy cameras(35 and 120), i shld start using my dad's canon slr again, and i just ordered a mini instax :)

instead of the developing fun, i just like the fact that film is forever. aftr you take a picture, it'll remain forever on film. not like digital (though i'm not hating it) where i always seem to lose them amongst my computer or accidentally delete them...

Thanks echoism, I'm actually looking for something less automated so i think i'm going for the FM. Btw, do you know any good website where i can learn how to calculate the under/overexposure steps?

I got my photos back today, and ugh... i'm so disappointed ...<.<

oohhh film photography <3

Brings back memories!

I have old 35mm camera somewhere around here. I think it's Nikon..or a Canon. One of those xD

Gah, now have the urge to go find it and have it fixed.

I still don't know anything about photography in general so I'll just lurk this thread for a while~

wiwi_an You can cross process pretty much any kind of film, all it is really, is using the "wrong" chemicals to give off nice funky colours. For the lab I went to, they first had to push the film, then develop all the rolls onto slide, then have it printed. But because slide film costs more to print, then add the push and actual cross processing charge, it ended up being about AUD$50/roll, so it's quite expensive to do OTL. I've only ever done two rolls because of it's just too expensive. Although you could try and copy the look in photoshop...

8D_heeeeeeeee DID YOU SAY $50 AUD PER ROLL?!?!?!?!??!? HOLY MOTHER. THAT IS SOME EXPENSIVE LAB!!! (but it's probably a really good quality one yea?)

for me, it costs around $50-60 HKD for them to cross-process and to scan into a CD.. so I don't get it printed. though they always give me looks when i give them slide film other than kodak elitechrome.

question: how many stops do you usually tell them to push? i never tried pushing/pulling but i've always wanted to try because people say that it turns out better and sometimes makes the colour shifts more pleasant...

i don't know if i should shoot at box speed and then push???

argh.. so clueless sometimes.........

so i'm using a Nikon FE-2 (MY BABY'S MIRROR IS STUCK AND I HAVE TO GET IT FIXED ASAP), Nikon F75 (my first film slr!), Konica C75, Olympus OM10.. and a Natura Classica because I don't consider it lomo as it was a fortune to get that baby in Japan -.- oh and a pretty dead SX-70 and a Polaroid P cam

Millou i'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean but this link has always been sitting in my bookmark bar and i've never actually gone to make it. it's a tutorial on how to make your own exposure calculator that is small enough to fit in a wallet! it's pretty interesting! EXPOSURE CALCULATORS

jacqg go ahead and get one! you never know what kind of treasures you end up with! one of my friends got a Minolta SLR from some garage sale for REALLY cheap because the owner thought it was broken but actually had a stuck mirror only... ahhhh :P

here's a xpro-ed shot from my recent trip to Macau with my Konica C35

4210735700_34dce7e2a4_m.jpg

i'm slowly falling in love with this camera even though the closest it can shoot is at 3 feet.. but i like how it's so simple and it's automatic (ohhhh i'm lazy!) ..

and Kodak Elitechrome 100 is one of the safest slide to work with (in my opinion) so I recommend it to those who are new to cross-processing!!!! i get some of the weirdest stuff with slide film like sensia and velvia? which makes me go iffy when using them...........
