Well Go USA Acquires Korean Blockbuster 'The Thieves'
Well Go USA has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Dong-hoo Choi's heist film "The Thieves," which opened in Korea over the summer and became the highest-grossing film in the country's history. Its North American theatrical release will be Oct. 12.
"The Thieves," which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, features some of Korea's biggest stars, including Jung Jae-Lee and Hyse-su Kim, as five elite thieves working together to steal the Tear of the Sun, a massive diamond worth 20 million dollars locked inside a casino vault. The team must break into the vault and steal the diamond without attracting the attention of the police while internal betrayal and mischief threatens the operation.
“After we saw the film at the Festival we knew it would be a perfect addition to our fall slate,” said Well Go USA president Doris Pfardrescher. “Dong-hoo Choi is a rare talent and his filmmaking style is a perfect fit for North American audiences.”
Pfardrescher negotiated the deal with Judy Ahn of Showbox/Mediaplex Inc.
Well Go USA specializes in bringing independent Asian cinema to North America, and it has released the war drama "The Front Line" and the Oscar-nominated short "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale." Well Go recently acquired the Chinese remake of "Dangerous Liaisons" at Toronto.

Director Choe Dong-hoon’s box office smash hit “The Thieves” has now become the top-selling Korean movie of all time.
As
of Tuesday, the movie featuring a star-studded cast set a box office
record for Korean films by drawing in 13,020,393 movie goers to the
theaters, stealing the top spot from director Bong Joon-ho’s 2006 sci-fi
thriller “The Host.”
Official box office figures showed that
the movie has earned approximately 93.6 billion won ($84 million),
surpassing the previous admissions leader “The Host,” which earned about
78.5 billion won.
The film’s domestic success and strong box
office numbers have received widespread international attention as well.
“The Thieves,” set in Macau, was released on 32 screens in Hong Kong
last month, making it the second-largest Hong Kong release for a Korean
film following “Haeundae,” which was released on 36 screens.
The
distribution rights to the film were sold all over Asia including
Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Thailand and
Vietnam. The movie also premiered in North America at the 2012 Toronto
International Film Festival.
“The Thieves” is an action-packed
heist film about a team of Korean and Chinese thieves plotting to steal
the “Tear of the Sun,” a $20 million diamond necklace that is kept
guarded in a casino safe in Macau. It features some of Korea’s top
actors and actresses such as Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Kim Soo-hyun,
Giana Jun and many others.
James Cameron’s Hollywood blockbuster
“Avatar,” which attracted 13.6 million locals, still sits at the top in
the country’s all-time box office sales that include non-domestic films.

Also, thanks for sharing this. I really need to
watch this movie ASAP because of all these reviews I read. But might be a while
since I still have to wait for the DVD copy. I’m glad this movie broke all time record though. Movies are
a distribution game unlike dramas, which means by its very nature, you throw an
insane amount of money at it to buy your audience through publicity and access. :)]

***For me, maybe
because in Korea, male artist are crowd-drawers compared to female artist. And I
know South Korea is the male cosmetics capital of the world. South Korean men buy
more makeup products and wear more makeup products than any other male in the
world. And yes, male artists have thousands & thousands of female fans so,
it makes sense. Some companies take advantage of the male idol's
popularity. It's more of a marketing strategy. But, male models mostly
model for face creams since they use them a lot too & not for lipsticks,
eyeshadows and stuff like that. I'm a female & seriously, I would want to
buy it because the product is geared towards female and a female is endorsing
it. I mean, it's nice and all to see a handsome guy on the packaging but that's
NOT why I want to buy the product but instead because I'm keeping it for
souvenirs - hehehe. :))
Why are male stars the models for female cosmetics?
In the past, beautiful female celebrities advertised cosmetics and
naturally, sales were boosted. However, over the past few years, male
stars have began flaunting their flawless complexions in cosmetic
advertisements.
The streets of Myeongdong in Seoul are lined with numerous cosmetics
stores. In front of each of these stores are life-size cardboard cutouts
of the stars and if you look carefully, you’ll notice that most of them
are male. It appears they chose the models appropriately as female fans
wander from store to store in order to purchase face masks which
feature the face of their favorite stars.
When former soccer star Ahn Jung Hwan, actors Ahn Jae Won and Hyun Bin
began modeling for cosmetic brands it came as a big shock in the
cosmetic industry because makeup models were exclusively female. Being a
model for cosmetics used to be a good gauge in determining the
popularity of a female star. But times have changed and the door has
opened wide for male stars to enter into the cosmetics advertising
industry.
Today, the majority of the male cosmetic models are singers, more
specifically, idol stars. The more female fans you have as a male idol,
the higher chance you have in being an advertisement model. Also, the
brands that they represent are not high-end brands but rather
“pharmacy”-like brands.
These male idol models include Kim Hyun Joong (The Face Shop), 2PM‘s Nichkhun (It’s Skin), TVXQ (Missha), Rain (Nature Republic), CNBLUE (Holika Holika/Olive Young), Lee Seung Gi (The Saem), JYJ (Tony Moly/Nature Republic) and F.T. Island (Baviphat). These are but a few of the male singers who are modeling or have modeled for cosmetics in the past. As for actors, Kim Soo Hyun (Beyond),Song Joong Ki (Tony Moly), Won Bin (The Shop), Jang Geun Suk (Nature Republic), and Jung Il Woo (Holika Holika) are some of the names who have participated as cosmetic models.
The strategy for using male stars as marketing for women’s products has been highly successful. For instance, when actor So Ji Sub began
modeling for the undergarment brand Vivien, requests for posters and
calendars came flooding which in turn led to an increase in sales.
Eventually, So Ji Sub’s contract was extended for one more year.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, female stars have been modeling
for primarily male market products as well. Before, it was only male
stars advertising alcoholic beverages, but today, it’s hard to see a
male star advertising soju. Pushing the idea of “women you would like to have a drink with“, female stars including Moon Chae Won, SECRET, Shin Se Kyung, Lee Hyori, and Han Ga In are seen on various soju posters and print advertisement in every Korean eatery.

Thanks for the info. Woohoo, we'll have more pictures to feast on come October 7. Hope KSH wears somehting dashing. not very formal but not too casual either. :-j
I wonder if they'll announce the part two of the movie already...
@jasmine27... I hope not.. I don't want Soo hyun to shoot another movie just yet... I badly want him in a drama so I hope he scriptwriter would take his time to write the script if ever it will materialize hehe
@willenette... Waiting for the The thieves to be released online is a torture. I envy the guys who had watched it... my patience is running thin but I can't do anything but wait for it so I could finally watch it... I know it's gonna be worth the wait
Secretly Greatly-Kim Soo hyun, Lee Hyun woo, Park Ki woong
I want Soo HYun to do another drama too. an action packed thriller would be nice or he could do another sageuk... But I doubt if he'll do another sageuk too soon after TMETS. It's sort of hard to top TMETS...

@jasmine27... there's a news before about him collaborating with Bae Yong Jun Im Soo jung and would be produced by Keyeast Drama Production Contents K... I think this would be his next project. as of today Contents K had done the drama Ohlala Couple and is expected to produce another drama that will also replace Ohlala Couple coming this January. I think so they's probably make KSH and BYJ 's drama at 2nd quarter of next year at the latest
