One of the moments of the competition will be to see Japan’s Mao Asada, the defending world champion, and rival Yu-Na Kim of Korea, a two-time world bronze medallist, go head to head.

In their last meeting at the Grand Prix Final, it was Asada who took the gold in a show of steely determination. All things being equal and with a clean skate from both skaters, it should be Kim who takes the title in Vancouver with her mesmerizing musicality, grace and superb technicality.

Yu-Na will skate her Danse Macabre short program -- same one she skated in Everett Washington at Skate America earlier this season.

I'm guessing this isn't being broadcasted on any American stations?

I wish I could watch...

I'm just hoping she has a performance without any major flaws, though I don't think I've seen a clean performance from her this season

. . .

lol she looks fierce

Ha Ha For sure!!! She is supposed to look fierce and macabre!

She is skating to Danse Macabre DANCE OF THE DEAD --usual motif is skeletons leading live people to the grave-- all levels of society as the great leveler.

Historical Highs -- scores form the past just for comparison:

For perspective, Yu-Na Kim has the highest ladies score in history for Short Program 71.95 (Mao's high SP is 69.50) and for

Free Skate [Long Program] 133.70 each earned at a different event (Mao's high Free Skate is 133.13).

Mao Asada has the highest total SP + FS achieved at one event, 199.52 (Yu-Na's high total was 197.20).

These ladies are CLOSE! Both ladies are looking to someday break the 200 point mark.

WHOA! WHOA!

My Bad!!!

It is not over yet. Caroline Zhang of USA and Rachel Flatt of USA and XU Binshu of China just finished to be followed by Czisny (USA) Phaneuf (CAN) and Suzuki (JPN).

No gold will be awarded tonight. They still need to skate the Free Skate on FRIDAY. Those scores I showed were historical highs. Mao and Yu-Na still have to skate yet!!

Oh, I used to be the biggest fan of Cynthia Phaneuf, but she had a growth spurt and has never been the same since. :3

I hope that this is a thread for the Korean figure skaters, but I love Mao Asada. She's amazing. <3

Phaneuf was in first at the moment. Very good score. Could get her on the podium!
