Synopsis:

Walking into the doorsteps of a rich merchant's house, a woman leaves her newborn child there, stating that the child is of the merchant's blood. Eighteen years later, the small child grows up to be Jae Young (Jang Hyuk), the younger son of the rich merchant, Park Hui Chan (Park Sang Won). He is a warm-hearted guy that always gets himself in trouble. Not knowing Yuh Jin (Lee Yo Won) is of the aristocratic class, he loves her since they were small children. Yuh Jin also loves him and tries to ignore her higher class by ignoring its rules. Jae Young's elder brother, Si Young (Han Jae Suk), on the other hand, is a wicked person with too much ambition. Even as a small child, his father knew that he would never be pleased with what he had. Si Young lives to satisfy his pleasures, killing many people in return and also ignoring his brother. When Jae Young runs away from his dad (whose manipulation his friends fell victim to), he encounters Sun Jae (Park Young Gyu)- a humanistic merchant, and his daughter, Dong Hee (Son Ye Jin). Through these people, he also gets to meet the mother he has never seen, Dan Ae (Jo Min Soo), who is a political lobbyist. In the dangerous world of trying to satisfy ones own ambition, the search for true happiness turns into a deadly wish for some people.

Hello, roaceica. Wecome to the Dae Mang thread and congratulation, you are the first threader! I read somewhere that the Dae Mang DVDs in Japan and in Hong, respectively, were released in 2004, but it seems the current status is out of print. Hope it comes back sooner than later!

I tried to find the Dae Mang thread, but couldn't. Since I am quite new to the Soompi world, I had to do some research on the history of soompi. hehe....then, I figured out no one re-started the Dae Mang thread since the 2005 crash.

So...here we go~

Hopefully, others will recognize the great talents in this drama and the great chemistry of Jang Hyuk and Jo Hyun Jae..together they epitomized the true essence of brotherly love and friendship. I totally fell in love with them and with this drama and it is my hope that someday soon someone who is capable of doing it will add English subtitles to this drama and open the door for more of us to enjoy it better. Although I don't understand Korean or read Hangul, it was not necessary for me to love the drama and to get the essence of it. I found that the deep performances of these two men and others enabled me to understand regardless. Both JH and JHJ performed with their eyes and it is so beautiful..ahhh...it is a drama that is filled with so much to love. Daemang is one of those great dramas that is very under rated and if given the chance will have you saying, BRAVO, BRAVO!! Thank you again for your work...I appreciate it and you very much. Welcome to the thread. In 6 years, all the main leads become big stars, right? I am not positive about the availability of english subtitles, but if i find them, i sure will post them here.

I will try to put up a summary of each episode. I am not sure how long i can manage to do this, though.

Episode 01

Dwelling in deep woods, a man senses approaching danger. Lee Soo (Jo In Sung) fights against the tiger attacking him and barely kills it, left wounded. While he was treating his wounds, he encountered a girl, Boonhee. Then she fell down right away, about to go to the labour and delivery. Lee Soo, perplexed, assisted her in giving birth to a boy. They found a place to live in an abandoned mountain village.

One late night, Boonhee left the place and went to Park Hui Chan's (Park Sang Won) house, handing over her son to him. She told him and his wife that the baby is of his blood, hoping that her son would grow up as a middle class in a much better environment. Park Hui Chan's wife accepted her asking. By the time she miscarried a child but no one knew about it. So his wife thought she can make the baby to be hers. Lee Soo who secretively followed Boonhee, eavesdroped on the conversation between them from outside. And then he left and never saw her again after.

Several years passed by. Jae Young (Yuem Se Chang) found his brother, Si Young (Jang Guen Suk) being beaten by a group of people, nearby a market. To stop them, Jae Young told them that he will help Mr Oh be released. Mr.Oh had worked for his father and was in the custody, and the people wanted to get him back. But, Si Young did not want Jae Young to intervene their father's business. To keep his promise, Jae Young and Si Young set their father's barn on fire to disrupt servants so that Mr Oh can flee away, but they realized Mr Oh was already released. Their father, who got angry at them, punished them, putting them on a house arrest with no food. Later he told them to pay back the damages, but Jae Young claimed his responsibilty for what happended. Their mother, Park Hui Chan's wife, condemned herself on not being able to strongly oppose her husband. She murmured to her closest servant that that may be because she is not their real mother. Si Young happened to overhear the conversation.

Jae Young was trying to figure out how to make money to repay his father. He heard a merchant from Gae Sung, Sun Jae (Park Young Gyu) has lots of money. He went to the place Sun Jae stayed during his visit to the capital in order to borrow money from him and he could make it. But he did not know how to use the seed money to earn double.

Si Young saw a chinese man and his daughter performing martial arts in the street. He became interested in the martial arts.

Jae Young didn't know he had his arm broken before Yuh Jin noticed it. Since she, although belonging to a noble family, had helped a medical doctor (oriental) - the old man who had worked for poor people, she knew medical treatment. She fixed his arm for him and that's the beginning of their relationship.

ah Dae Mang ..those were the times when there was no CB , no sendspace ..lol i steal links from SBS .--;; those mms links .

.i love the casting in this drama .even though towards the last few esp , i do find the ending can be more tighten up .but nevertheless .it was a drama i remembered and enjoyed . especially i love the relationship between Jae Young and the Prince .~~and i clearly remembered how chilling i felt at the Father , how he make his son endured such cruel lesson of reality ..(though i must say ..that is his means of survival in the world he lives in , he has such ambition ) ..yet later i realised ..his elder son was more cruel then he was . oh and that pure love between yuh jin and jae young ..there were the times when they were separated and i keep wondering when they will ever meet again .yet when he return .i still remember so clearly ..he just stood outside and watches her .!! .....not daring to appear before her .

i thought Son Ye jin did a good role as Dong Hee lol if you speak of an actress first role to be disguised as a male i thnk Dong Hee can be classified as a pioneer in those days .

Dae Mang sort of became a turning pt for alot of the cast ...Lee Yo Won married right after this drama , Jang Hyuk

and Han Jae Suk went into army . as for Son Yejin , it was years later that she came back to the small screen after Dae Mang . I think it was either her role or LYW''s role which was meant to be Jeon Ji Hyun .?

I agree with your comments on the ending. The ending was rushed. I guess the writer did not do a good job of evenly spliting the story development across episodes. One of the excuses was Son Ye Jin had to leave the drama in the middle. So the story had to change a bit since the episode 19 (?) and the role of prince became more important.

I heard the role of Son Ye Jin was originally for Jun Ji Hyun.

ah . ya i forget about Son Yejin having to leave the filming halfway , so Dong Hee also sort of disappeared .

but anyway .since it was obvious jae young doesnt have any room in his heart for another woman .so the "romance" between him and dong hee will forever remain a friendship .

..ya the last few esp .certain turn of events felt so rushed ..but i dun mind they giving the prince a more important role .lol ~~ just that the way Si young was obessed with getting yuh jin gets to me especially

this was the first thing that drew my attention to this drama and then the rest is history...love everything about it

Malia, you have a new avatar! Cute puppy!!! Jo Hyun Jae is cute with that camouflage hat and Jang Hyuk looks more manly here. I think JH lost some weight during or after filming the drama 'Succes story of bright girl', which boosted his chiseled features.
