Jang Dong-gun and Ko So-young are a couple

By Ryu Seung-yoon

200911050061.jpg

Two of Korea's top stars, Jang Dong-gun and Ko so-young, confirmed on Thursday that they are a couple.

Responding to news reports about the rumor, Jang's management agency said that the two stars had feelings for each other since they shot the film "Love Wind, Love Song" together in 1998.

The agency added that their relationship is developing into one of love, but denied rumors that they may tie the knot in December.

"Nothing has been decided yet with regard to marriage," the agency said.

The couple plan to have a press conference about their relationship in the near future.

An associate of the two said on Thursday that Jang and Ko started dating seriously two years ago.

There were rumors linking the pair in the past, but the two had denied them.

Born in 1972, Jang made his debut in the MBC-TV drama "Our Heaven" in 1993 and became a star in the nation and rose to Asian stardom. Recently, he starred in "Good Morning President" as the youngest president of Korea.

Ko was also born in the same year with Jang, and made her debut on TV as a new generation star through the hit soap opera "Love Tomorrow" in 1993, becoming a TV commercial star in the late 1990s.

Top stars Jang Dong-gun and Ko So-young took the country by surprise on Thursday after revealing that they have been dating.

"Their relationship has been developing into that of lovers after having been good friends for a long time," Jang's agency AM Entertainment said in a press release.

AM however, denied the two had talked about nor settled any details regarding marriage, playing down reports from earlier in the day that the couple were planning on marrying in December.

Over several occasions, the two were rumored to be in a relationship since appearing together in 1999 film "Love Wind, Love Song" but both movie stars had denied the rumors everytime.

Jang, one of Korea's top actors since his debut in 1993, has won several critical acclaims including the award for Best Supporting Actor for 2001 hit film "Friend" at the 2001 Asia Pacific Film Festival and the Best Actor Award for "Taegukgi" at the 2004 Blue Dragon Film Awards. He recently starred in box office topper "Good Morning President" which was also the opening film for the Pusan International Film Festival last month.

Ko has appeared in over a dozen films since debuting in 1993. She rose to stardom with 1997 hit film "Beat" in which she appeared alongside co-star Jung Woo-sung.

Guess What! They've Been Dating for 2 Years

By Kim Tong-hyung

Staff Reporter

Jang Dong-gun, left, a top movie star, and Koh So-young, have been dating for two years and may get married as soon as next month. / Korea Times

Their children will be so impossibly cute we might puke.

According to their representatives, actor Jang Dong-gun, voted the most beautiful male celebrity in a KBS television survey earlier this year, has been dating starlet Ko So-young for the past two years and marriage is a possibility. The couple, however, dismissed the rumors that their wedding has been set for December.

Jang and Ko met while the 1998 melodrama, "Love Wind, Love Song’’ and became friends, according to Jang’s management agency, and have been a couple since 2007.

The country has seen its share of celebrity couples in recent years, with movie stars Seol Kyung-gu and Song Yun-ah tying the knot in May, and actress Choi Ji-woo, who may have a larger following in Japan than her home country, surprising her fans by announcing her relationship with Lee Jin-wook, a lesser-known television actor.

Actor Hyun Bin has been dating Song Hye-ko, his co-star on the 2008 television series, "The World They Live In.’’

Still, Jang and Ko may be the most powerful celebrity couple as of yet, as the media will undoubtedly treat them as the Korean equivalent of "Brangelina.’’

The 37-year-old Jang, who launched his acting career with the 1993 television series, "Our Heaven,’’ is best known for appearing in hit movies such as "Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War,’’ a 2004 film that remains as one of the country’s most successful movies ever, selling nearly 12 million tickets.

Jang’s recent movie, "Good Morning Mr. President,’’ recent opened at local theaters.

Ko, also 37, gained popularity for her roles in several television dramas in the 1990s and early 2000s, and still draws one of the highest paychecks among actresses in television commercials. However, her movie career has been inconsistent compared to that of Jang, although her acting in the 1997 movie, "Beat,’’ drew positive reviews.

Haven't been updating Ko So Young's thread for a while and shocked to read this news about KSY dating Jang Dong Gun in JDG's thread. Shocked and very happy! I liked them a lot in "Love Wind Love Song", I especially bought the DVD years ago because of them and have wished that they'd be together. And they're now together and even have been dating for 2 years. I didn't even know they were great friends. Wish them lots of happiness! :)

Commercial-Only Stars Let Down Their Fans

Source: englishnews@chosun.com

One of the most popular topics on the Internet in recent weeks has been a TV commercial featuring actress Lee Young-ae. The ad, for a telecom firm, makes use of the femme fatale image Lee perfected in the movie "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance." It was good to see her on the screen again, but it was also sad that we can only see her in 30-second commercials instead of feature films.

"Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" in 2005 was her last film, and her last TV series was "The Jewel in the Palace" in 2003. Since then, she has kept in the public eye with a string of commercials, for which she earns more than W1 billion (US$1=W1,151) a year.

Lee is not the only star who can only be seen in commercials. Ko So-young has not appeared in any movie or TV drama since 2007 but instead sells shampoo, rice cookers, construction materials, electronic gadgets, cosmetics and food products. Some report say she made W4 billion from ads over the last year.

Superstar Bae Yong-joon recently started appearing in an ad for a gas company and has made no TV drama since "Taewangsasingi (The Four Guardian Gods of the King)" in 2007 and no movie since "April Snow" in 2005. He only made a cameo appearance this year in the TV drama "Dream High," which he produced. Other top stars Jang Dong-gun, Kim Nam-joo, Jung Woo-sung, Jeon Ji-hyun, Kim Tae-hee and Lee Hyo-ri also appear in more commercials than TV programs or movies. This may be a reason for a contemptuous view that Korea is the only country where top stars are more dedicated to signing ad contracts than to their own profession.

There is no shame in appearing in a commercial. In a capitalist society, there is no rule that limits actors to appearing only in films or TV dramas when their fans and consumers want to see more of them. Advertisers are also responsible for this phenomenon. If they have the money, they can hire any actor to pitch their products. Among the 2,000 commercials produced in Korea last year, 65 percent featured celebrities. In the U.S., United Kingdom and France, the rate is less than 10 percent. But under these circumstances, how can Korean ad companies come up with original ideas and take the industry to the next level? And why should consumers have to shoulder the extra cost for the astronomical fees paid to celebrities?

Fans probably just want to see Lee Young-ae, Bae Yong-joon and Ko So-young, and if it has to be in a commercial, so be it. But these stars became famous because of their fans, so they owe it to them to produce more worthwhile work.

Tea company in 'steep' trouble with Go So-young

By Carla Sunwoo [carlasunwoo@joongang.co.kr] koreajoongangdaily.com

30161736.jpg

Actress Go So-young’s agency released a press statement on Jan. 27 declaring that from Jan. 11, a tea company has been using the star’s name to promote its line of “Go So-young’s Diet Herbal Tea” without Go’s consent.

“The company in question has fooled consumers and fans alike, misinforming them to think that Go used the products for weight-loss after she gave birth. Although we’ve asked the company several times to remove the articles and to stop spreading these lies, they haven’t complied. Therefore we are in the process of taking legal actions against the company,” said a representative from the actress’ agency.

In addition to the tea company, there are multiple other companies currently poaching the starlet’s name to sell products – “Go So-young Diapers” and “Go So-young Hand Cream” to name a few. Go’s agency is consulting a lawyer to best deal with these businesses. The agency said that it will make a stand against companies that are unlawfully using Go’s name to hawk their products. Legal steps will ensure than fans and consumers aren’t duped into making purchases that unofficially carry the entertainer’s name.

Jung Jun-ha to wed girlfriend 'Nemo' in May

By Kwaak Je-yup jay@koreatimes.co.kr

Jung Jun-ha

One of Korea’s celebrity bachelors is ready to put an end to his single life.

Jung Jun-ha, comedian best known for his part in the six-man team on MBC’s weekly show “Infinity Challenge,” announced Monday that he is tying the knot with his girlfriend of three years in May.

Her name has been withheld from the public, following the national press law. The Japanese-born Korean flight attendant has been referred to as “Nemo” by Jung since the entertainer first announced their relationship on “Infinity” in 2009.

A private ceremony will be held at the exclusive Shilla Hotel in Jangchung-dong, central Seoul, on May 20. The five-star hotel has established itself as the go-to wedding spot for A-list celebrities, attracting among others Jang Dong-gun and Go So-young, Korea’s Brangelina.

“Our parents met in January, and things took off right away,” said Jung at a press conference Monday, which took place at his Japanese restaurant-bar in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul. “It was during the Lunar New Year holiday in Osaka, and I didn’t know that things would move so quickly.”

Jung, who turned 41 last month, was one of the industry’s most public bachelors, with himself and colleagues regularly bringing up his wish to find a wife in the public sphere.

The couple met for the first time in 2008, when he was a passenger on a flight she was working.

At the press conference, he also denied previous media reports that an unexpected pregnancy is the cause of the surprise announcement. “I would like a child, but she’s still young,” he said, referring to his 31-year-old fiancee. “But this is no case of speeding (local term for pregnancy-forced weddings).”
