  SYNOPSIS 

A peculiar mermaid attempts to become a human in just 100 days to meet the human man she loves. Surplus Princess is a story about a mermaid who lives as a human in a world where unemployed people are not treated as people. For the story of a mermaid learning to live in the human world, Jo Bo Ah, On Ju Wan, Song Jae Lim, Nam Joo Hyuk, Kim Min Gyo, and Kim Seul Gi have been confirmed as the new cast.


MAIN CAST


Jo Bo Ah was cast as the mermaid princess, Hani, who longs to become human and gets into several comical situations during the process.

Oh Ju Wan will play Hyun Myung, an applicant preparing for employment. Rather than the arts or passion, Hyun Myung is a realist who puts importance in living day by day. He is expected to have a romantic relationship with Hani.

Song Jae Lim, Jo Bo Ah, On Ju Wan, Nam Joo Hyuk

Song Jae Lim will play a narcistic and pretentious man. As he′s mostly been shown as a cold and stiff antagonist on both the big and small screens, Song Jae Lim′s new transformation is being anticipated.

The drama will follow the three of them as they suffer the daily grind and the hardships of the job search, with romance and fantasy to add a little whimsy to the proceedings.

Comedian and actress Kim Seul Gi has been cast in the tvN drama “The Mermaid“! The drama will look at the youths of this generation as well as their hardships, pains, and hope through the eyes of a mermaid.

According to Kim Seul Gi”s agency, Producer Baek Seung Ryong, who is in charge of directing the drama, thought of Kim Seul Gi from the very beginning stages of planning and created a character outline for her.

The Mermaid Cometh, Are We Ready?


Oh tvN and your weirdo throw off dramas. Usually--you know me--giant fan of the cable dramas. Usually their dramas are interesting, unique, and a little more real. And then... they throw off those one weirdo dramas. 

Remember Nailshop Paris? Girl pretending to be a boy to infiltrate a magical issue solving nail shop employed only by boys? Standard Kdrama fare, right? Well throw in some last minute, out of left field, guhimo action, and you've got a 'what the?' drama. 

Looks like tvN is at it again. Anyone heard of this new upcoming drama, Surplus Princess? It's a kicky coming of age drama with a mermaid who hates anyone who is unemployed. Um. Okay. 

No. I'm sorry, no. That is not okay. 


What the fudge kind of premise is that? A mermaid who hates anyone who is unemployed? Oh, and the only way she can become full-on human is to get a full time job herself? Why does a mermaid need a job?


You know, I didn't actually hate Nail Shop Paris. I thought it was light, breezy fun. Well, until the cool guy turned into the obsessive boyfriend--oh--and you know, she turned into a guhimo and they pulled a Boys Over Flowers with the whole love vs soul mate cheat. Then I got cranky, very cranky. 

tvN, when you have it right (and you have it right a lot of the time) you are very, very right. But when you are wrong? Shudder. 

Of course I say this as I'm currently looking forward to High School King of Savy, a drama with a plot that involves a high school hockey star living a double life as his older brother as an executive while hunting down the people who were responsible for his parents deaths. So maybe Surplus Princess will turn out to be awesome. 

They already have a cast of Jo Boa as our mermaid, who was previously on Shut Up Flower Boy Band. You know what, she was actually pretty serviceable there. The hero will be On Joo Wan, who I've never seen in anything, but was most recently in the usually disliked Sword and Petal. Our B Lead will be Song Jae Rim. Woot, Song Jae Rim! Except, he was the lead in Nail Shop Paris. Here's hoping he grows his hair out for this drama. Maybe he could suddenly be revealed as a mer-man and his hair can magically grow. If there is any man who should always rock the luscious man-locks, it is Song Jae Rim. See?

tvN new drama “Surplus Princess” (Script by Park Ran, PD Baek Seung Ryong) has finally completed the casting and shooting will be quickly started by the end of this month.

The story of “Surplus Princess” is about a mermaid who couldn’t be able to handle any work, feels not accepted by the world she works hard in the process to become human. In the story, Jo Boa will play the role as mermaid living in human’s world along with Ohn Joo Wan, Song Jae Rim, Kim Min Gyo, and also Kim Seul Gi for the final casts.

In “Surplus Princess” Jo Boa will play the role as mermaid Hani. She wants to stay in human world as she cherish and longing to become real human even struggling so hard with dramatic appearance comically.

Jo Boa first known for her acting in tvN drama “Shut Up Flower Boy Band” and then in MBC “Horse Doctor” also starred in (19+) movie “Innocent Thing”, she challenged various genre and drama since her youth to build her filmography. A representative from acting agency Sidus HQ also mentioned her as a promising rookie.

Ohn Joo Wan will play the role as an enthusiasm applicant Hyun Myung. Rather than the passion of art in life he thinks it’s more important to make living realistically. His character is stiff and has sensitive personality. His character is expected to become the loveline with Jo Boa.

Ohn Joo Wan recently played the second male lead in the (19+) movie “Obsessed”. He caught the attention as his role was a husband who use his wife for his ambition behind his soft (fake) personality. Expecting how will he play the role as a person who is passionate in his work.

While for Song Jae Rim’s role is a very narcistic and bluffy character Si Kyung. All this while Song Jae Rim has captivated as an evil character whether in small or big screen, he is sure being anticipated as this time he will take off his villain figure for a new different character.

Out from those three leads, there is a model who appeared in Akdong Musician’s MV and become the topic Nam Joo Hyuk. Nam Joo Hyuk will play as an applicant richard simmons who is going to become trainee for employment but he is actually supported by his parents to live in a comfortable life. His parents run restaurant and sending him allowance but he is actually freeloader, living with his senior from college.

Through “Surplus Princess” Nam Joo Hyuk starting his acting career. Previously as he appeared in AKMU’s MV “200%” and “Give Love” with a charming look will be anticipated for his dynamic role to maximize the fun in the drama.

When Baek Seung Ryong PD of “Surpluss Princess” met the reporter he said that, “Nam Joo Hyuk is prominent model turned actor, he even passed the audition among many idols who auditioned for the role and we anticipated his acting. Please looking forward for this upcoming drama and make it a hit. I hope people will watch it with much of interest and affection.”

In addition of the cast are SNL Korea’s Kim Min Gyo and Kim Seul Gi who got her nickname as ‘national curse’. The two completed the casts. In this drama Kim Seul Gi will play as a crazy character, expected more for her presence.

Although he is living in a comfortable environment, he is a character that lacks his parents′ love. This will be Nam Joo Hyuk′s first role in a drama series.

Revealing the first script reading session, tvN′s new drama Surplus Princess gaining anticipation. 

On June 20, the actors and staff of Surplus Princess held its first script reading at the CJ E&M Center in Sangam-dong. Jo Bo Ah, On Ju Wan, Song Jae Lim, Park Ji Soo, Kim Min Gyo, Kim Seul Gi, Nam Joo Hyuk, Lee Sun Kyu and more participated in the session, completedly melted into their character, making it hard to believe it was only the first script reading.



Each actor pulled off their character very well, creating much laughter from beginning to end. 

After the script reading session, the actors gathered for a group picture, even creating funny expressions. 

Baek Seung Ryong PD, in charge of directing Surplus Princess, said, "All the actors participated with passion and blew life into their characters. I′m anticipating the filming after seeing all the unique and strong characters in one room." 

Surplus Princess is awaiting broadcast on August 7. The drama is about a mermaid who visits the human world and starts living in Seoul with the goal of turning into a human within 100 days.

Ji Eun Yi, Park Ran, and Kim Ji Soo will be in charge of writing, while Baek Seung Ryon PD, who′ve worked on SNL Korea and Rude Miss Young Ae will be directing.
