II. About the Show

• Broadcast Time
  8 vs 1 airs Monday nights at 11:15 pm (Korean Time) on SBS. It took over the timeslot left vacant when Yashimmanman was canceled. If you are wondering what that is in your time, go to Time Converter Calculator and select your timezone to find out.
  
  
• Premise
  MCs: Shin Dong Yup, Kim Heechul, Jung Chan Woo, Solbi (from ep.7), Shim Eun Jin (ep.1-6)
  
  Each week, the 4 MCs and 4 guest celebrity panelists try to guess the answers given by 50 people/couples who answered a survey. If they aren't able to guess all the answers given, the task is passed onto a contestant who has to guess at the answers for prize money.
  
  
• Participants
  50 People/Couples Surveyed
  The show is seeking people/couples who have experienced the things that they require for the survey questionnaires, the subject of which is mentioned during the broadcast. When writing a post to be selected as one of the 50, please provide the following information:
  • As the title of the post, put the subject for which you are seeking to be one of those surveyed.
  • Name, Birthdate/Birthyear, Occupation, Contact information (you must include your cell phone number)
  • Functioning e-mail address
  • Within the text of the post, once again include the subject for which you are seeking to be one of the 50 surveyed.
  
  Contestants
  Anyone over the age of 19 can apply to appear on the show as a contestant. If your application has been chosen, you will receive a text message on your cell phone with a possible date, time, and location to come in for an interview. If there are a lot of possible contestants, there might a Round 1 interview followed by a Round 2 interview.
  
  In order to apply to be a contestant, you must have a SBS website membership, go to this page, and fill in the message box on the bottom of the page. After selecting "8vs1참여하기" on the dropdown menu next to 분류, write out your full name in the box next to 제목 (subject header). In the box next to 내용,provide the following information:
  • Name, Birthdate/Birthyear, Occupation, Contact information (you must include your cell phone number)
  • Brief self-introduction
  • Photograph (the pic file name should be in English)
  • Functioning e-mail address
  For Those who receive a text message, you can participate in the interviewing process by coming to the SBS building 1st floor lobby in Mokdong.
  
  Submit Topic Ideas
  Send in your topic ideas for the show. If your topic idea is selected, there will be a prize given. Please provide the following information:
  • As the title of the post, write out your full name.
  • Name, Birthdate/Birthyear, Occupation, Contact information (you must include your cell phone number)
  • Functioning e-mail address
  For those who submitted topic ideas, your posts have timestamps on them so only those ideas submitted BEFORE the show is filmed will be valid. In case of the same idea has been submitted by different people, the person who submitted first will be chosen. Since it's your ideas that make for a better program, we seek your active participation.
  
  
• Show Format
  
  There was a complete shift on the focus of the show from the previous versions. Unlike the other 2 incarnations of 8 vs 1, this version has a more homey feel to it, of friends lounging around playing games while sharing personal anecdotes and stories. They are no longer on a quiz show type of setting with a big stage and each panelist sitting behind a podium with discussions only centered around the question, but rather each panelist is sitting on a cushion on the floor in a semi-circle talking about their personal stories as it relates to the question while answering the question. As you can see, the format changes a little with each episode as they try to tweak the show to find their niche.
  
  Episode 1
  The panelists guess at the answers given by a survey of 50 people by picking up a placard with their own pictures on it or sitting on a whoopee cushion that is moving on a conveyer belt on a low table that they are sitting around. The panelists are allowed to make up to 50 guesses before they make 8 incorrect guesses. If they get a wrong answer, a strong gust of wind blows in their face. After 8 incorrect guesses, a contestant is given an opportunity. All they need is to find one correct answer within 60 seconds and they win $1000.
  
  Episode 2-3 & 4 (second half)
  The panelists guess at the answers given by a survey of 50 people by picking up a lollipop or sitting on a whoopee cushion that is moving on a conveyer belt on a low table that they are sitting around. The panelists are allowed to make up to 40 guesses until they make 8 incorrect guesses. If they get a wrong answer, a strong gust of wind blows under their skirts. After 8 incorrect guesses, a contestant is given an opportunity. They only have 8 changes to guess a correct answer and they win $1000.
  
  Episode 4 (first half) & 5 to 9
  The panelists guess at the answers given by a survey of 50 people. The panelists are allowed to make as many guesses as there are answers. After their allotted number of guesses, a contestant is given an opportunity. They are given 8 chances to guess the correct answers from whatever number of answers that are left unanswered. For each correct answer, they are given $1000 for a total of up to $8000. This episode instituted a new method of guessing at an answer, that of going up to a small cube podium and hitting a buzzer. There is no penalty for guessing the wrong answer.
  
  Episode 10 to present
  The show is separated into two segments. The first part is called [Star Straight Talk! GO? STOP!] where they show what the 50 people they surveyed had to say about 2 of the 4 guests on that week. The comments range from polite to mean and are given levels with the first level, the polite comments, being revealed first. The guest is given an opportunity to respond to each comment. Any time the guest doesn't feel comfortable with the comments, they can put a stop to it by holding up a stop sign. The second part is a survey question like before, but rather than having to guess all the answers, they reveal all the answers EXCEPT one peculiar or odd one out. The panelists are divided into two teams: MC team and Guest Team. One side is given the answer and has to give hints to the other side to help them guess the answer. If they are able to correctly guess the answer, they are given $1000 to donate to a charity of their choice. If they aren't able to correctly guess the answer, the contestant who gave the original answer is given $1000.

VI. Miscellaneous Information

• The pilot of the first incarnation of "8 vs 1" was called Quiz 8 vs. 1 with MC Shin Dong Yup. It aired on September 26, 2006 with 8 celebrity panelists. The premise was to answer the top 3 answers to a trivia question that contestants came up with. If the celebrity panelists aren't able to answer all 3 answers, the contestant is given $3000. For each correct answer by the celebrity panelist $1000 is taken away.

• The show became a part of the SBS Thursday night lineup with it's current title 8 vs 1 (대결 8대1) on October 4, 2007 with MC Shin Dong Yup and 8 celebrity panelists. The format was changed along with the title. The premise was to answer the top 3 answers to a trivia question as before, but rather than the contestant coming up with the question, they have to answer along with the celebrity panelists. The contestant is given a chance to guess at the answers after each celebrity panelist's guess thus they have 8 chances. For each of the correct answers the contestant gives, they win $1000, up to $3000 while the celebrity wins a prize of a gold medal per each of the correct answers they give. After 5 episodes with the move of "OotChatSsa" to Thursday due to the new SBS Sunday Night Lineup, "8 vs 1" was put on the shelf until a suitable timeslot opened up.

Here's a summary...

Everyone was accusing each other of being a "bihogahm" or "unlikable person" and amongst all the talk, Kim Chang Ryul just let out a fart

There is a saying in Korea that if you are cursed at by others that you will live a long time so Heechul shook Solbi's hand (Solbi is known to have a lot of anti's on the internet) and said, "Congratulations, you'll live a very long time. I too think I will live a very long time" and then everyone thought that everyone there will live a long time so instead of referring to the episode as the "unlikable person special" they thought it would be better to call it the "Long Life Special"

Question 1:
50 weekend husbands (those who live apart from their wives during the week due to work) were surveyed. When my wife shows up without calling ahead of time, the thing that worries me the most is...? (16 answers)

I'm not writing out all the answers, just the answers that relate to stories and jokes that they mentioned on the show...

SDY asked Kim Chang Ryul since he's married how he would react if his wife said she was going to visit her family for a week, but came back in 3 days without calling? Jung Chan Woo was teasing KCR about his past reputation of drinking and fighting by saying that there wouldn't be any reaction since he probably wouldn't be at home when she got home anyways.

LJ talked about two-timing on his girlfriend and getting caught and being so caught offguard that he introduced his girlfriend to the girl he was cheating on her with Needless to say, he was dumped by both.

Jang Young Ran gave the answer of "evidence of a woman's presence" so SDY jokingly says, "How about evidence of a man's presence Heechul added to it by saying, "The wife comes over and wants to know who the other woman is and then from the shower comes a man saying 'honey, who's at the door?'" Then SDY tries to make Heechul out to be the odd one by playing innocent by saying, "I was just referring to the husband having his friends over" which in turn makes Heechul say "I was just relaying what Solbi said" and Solbi is like "What the heck?!"

KCR gave the answer of "watching porn" and then talked about this one time how he had a porn site on his "favorites" folder and then was caught by his wife. He said that she told him that she erased it so he told her that he had forgotten to erase it so she did a good thing, but in truth, the fact was that he knew the URL by heart so it didn't matter. Then Heechul adds "But in truth, the fact is that your wife is watching this program" so he was like "EEK" Jung Chan Woo added that once he got embarrassed even though it wasn't porn... while watching the mating of whales on Wild Kingdom type of show and when they showed the genitals of the whale.

Solbi gave the answer of "having an messy house" and so the talk went in that direction. Shin Eun Jin said that SuJu dorm must live like a group of beggars since so many guys live there. Heechul talked about how they live in 2 separate floors because there's so many members. He said that it's rather embarrassing to invite people to their dorms, not because it's horribly messy, but because mostly the guys walk around naked. SDY agrees that when men are by themselves, they don't usually put on clothes. SEJ wanted Heechul to call her at times like that Solbi said that she also does that when she's alone in the house. Heechul said that when they get out of the shower, they are looking at their bodies in the mirror, bragging about their physique, hitting each other, and practicing the choreography they just learned in the buff

Solbi was talking about those who have 2 cellphones and LJ talked about how his old girlfriend had 2 cellphones. He said that he's conservative (which made everyone bust a gut) so he's very mindful of his girlfriend going clubbing late at night. She got caught by him a couple of times so ever since then she got a second cellphone which she leaves at home after midnight and doesn't answer (Korean cellphones have a tracking device so other cellphone users can tell where the phone is located). Solbi says that it's very common to which Heechul says that that's just too much. Solbi said that she likes the conservative type men and when Jang Young Ran was saying how LJ was exuding being cheap, Solbi defended LJ so the other folks were playfully trying to set up Solbi and LJ when KCR dropped a bombshell... that LJ once had a crush on JYR LJ said that he thought JYR's smile was really pretty, but back then he wasn't very into looks He said that she wasn't his ideal women back then, but that she always laughed at his jokes and made him feel comfortable so he thought, I might be embarrassed walking down the street with her, but at least I'll feel comfortable when I'm around her KCR joked that if you put JYR and LJ's antis together, it would be larger than the number of DBSK fans So they made them give the answer together, but when they got the wrong answer, JYR hit LJ.

Solbi came up with the answer of "having to say goodbye once they leave," but Heechul, Solbi, JYR, and KCR all went up to give this answer since it might improve their image. Heechul pushes Solbi out of the way so he could answer and SEJ who saw this yelled at him and pushed him out of the way while KCR and JYR are arguing about who should get to answer the question Solbi finally got to give her answer.

Then Solbi mentioned "husband and wife relations" but couldn't put it into words and KCR added the info about how the guy is really worn out, but as soon as the wife comes, she wants to have sex and sort of leaned back on his elbows to express what he was trying to say to which Heechul responded "You don't have to physically show us, this is SBS" Heechul tries to add to the sex part by saying that because they are husband and wife and they only see each other in the weekend, they want to talk, hold hands, kiss, talk about serious matters and such so SDY asks Solbi and Heechul go give the answer together since they were both talking about "husband and wife relations"... Solbi didn't know how exactly to put the answer into words so SDY suggested they do another one of "8 vs 1" Short Plays of the scenario involving a tired husband and an amorous wife.

On screen, they wrote:

H: not having enough strength because he couldn't eat octopus (thought to give you stamina/aphrodisiac) and such as that... just include everything
S: Why can't you just say it out right... when the guy can't do it (This embarrasses Heechul so he pushes her over while laughing ) Why did you do that?
H: You might just come here once, but us MCs have to do this every week! (Korean audiences' sensibilities are such that they might be offended at such frank answers)

The listing for this coming week's (2/25) episode of 8 vs 1 was just posted on the official site and thus on Post #2.

It looks like they are spreading over the guests over different episodes like they did with episode 4. Question 1 will be the one with the DBSK members and Question 2 will be the one with the guests from the first part of episode 4. Here's part 2 of the summary for 2/18 episode to read while waiting for episode 6 to air

Question 2:
50 professional combative fighters were surveyed. What's the place that hurts the most when you get hit? (11 answers)

Kim Chang Ryul (who as mentioned before has a reputation for having gone into many a fight/brawl in his single days) said, "I'll just answer a few and just leave" Heechul then added, "Maybe KCR might not know the answer to this because he is usually the one who is doing the hitting" KCR responded that the reason he knows how to fight is because he's gotten beaten up so much that he learned to protect himself.

Everyone thought the first answer was obvious... the male nether region KCR said he knew of this pain very well and went into a story. Quite a while back, he lived with a friend. One day, he and his friend were drinking at home. His friend's father passed away, but because he couldn't get any time off from work and didn't want to get fired, he didn't go to his father's funeral. KCR cussed at him for being such a coward. I guess already having a guilty heart and having his friend call him a coward made him so angry that he kicked KCR in the balls with all his might. KCR passed out because he was in so much pain and he was drunk. When he woke up, his nether region was swollen and he was in so much pain that he couldn't even sit. He called his cousin who was a doctor and was told to come in. Heechul asked him in what position he went to the hospital so he gave a demonstration O_O He said he was in so much pain that he couldn't stand up straight and had to keep his legs apart. Upon examination, his cousin told him that his testicles burst. They showed Heechul leaning towards Solbi and Jang Young Ran and asking "Can they really burst?" to which SDY was wondering "how would THEY know about such a thing?" KCR said that he had surgery to sew the testicles back up and bandage the damaged area, but he was laid up at the hospital for 2 months.

SDY said that he hosted a health show before and that the reason the testicles aren't symmetric and are placed at different lengths is because it could cause damage if they hit against each other Only one is needed, the other is a "spare"

The women asked if every male has been hit at least once in the area and all the guys say yes. Jung Chan Woo says, not only being hit in the area, but accidently hurting it yourself by falling on something with it. Heechul must have a similar experience because he screamed when hearing that. JCW talked about falling and crashing into a wall corner. KCR said that his friend was jumping off of a roof and got caught between the walls, getting hit in that area. LJ talked about riding a bicycle and falling off the seat. JCW said that he felt like hitting the wall for causing him pain

JCW mentioned that being hit in the eye also hurts and KCR also had a story about that He said that when his son was very young, he was playing with a toy airplane and he turned around to look at his son and got poked in the eye with the wing of the airplane. His cornea got scratched. He couldn't open his eye, but tears kept falling. It was so painful that he thinks it's the most painful thing in the world and hurt more than when his testicles burst. SDY said that people are like that... when they get kicked in the balls, that hurts the most until they get hit somewhere else and that place hurts. KCR said that he got it treated at the hospital and while he was taking medication and such, he couldn't drink alcohol for 2 months and it finally healed. BUT then when his son got a bit older, but couldn't speak yet, he was playing on his stomach while he was sleeping. Then in order to wake him up, his son headbutted him in the eyes. He said he was in so much pain that he threw his son off of him, fortunately they were on the bed.

LJ thought the thing that would hurt the most is your feelings SDY asked if there was anyone there who's feelings hurt more than anything else when they got hit and JCW said that he did. JCW talked about his army days. He was cleaning the area around another campsite, but suddenly he had to go to the bathroom. Since his campsite was far, he just used the bathroom near the place he was cleaning. When he came out, an officer told him to come towards him and when he did, beat him with his rifle. At the end of the beating, the officer said, "Why are you taking a dump at our bathroom?" He used that bathroom on a normal basis, but apparently, the day before, someone from his campsite got in a fight with someone from their campsite and their campsite lost so the officer was just being petty. So finally after he cleaned the snow off the grounds and as he was putting the broom away, he said he cried because he was so wronged. Snow was falling and the sun was setting and the reason he got beaten up was because he took a dump

SDY said that he's told this story once before on a show, but SDY debuted in 1991 and in 1992 he got a short segment on a comedy show that was crawling with Korea's most well-respected and famous comedians even though he was a totally newbie. They were totally fine with SDY having a segment on the show even though he was a newbie, but there was someone who was his sunbae, but below their levels who didn't look favorably on SDY. One day, they all went out drinking and that person got drunk and started saying all these things to SDY and slapped him about 50 times. He said he felt so wronged that he wanted to cry, but he didn't want to cry in front of that guy so he went to the bathroom and cried. Momentarily he thought about forgetting about his duties as a hoobae and hitting him back, but then realized that even if he fought back, the other guy could have easily beaten him up so he refrained

Solbi said that one time when they were doing role reversal games with the sunbaes, she told a sunbae to sit up straight and that sunbae came and hit her in the head. She didn't want to play the role reversal game to start with and was coaxed into it by the sunbae and felt that she was wrongly being punished for playing the game as she was told to do. The other panelists were convinced that Solbi used harsher words than just "sit up straight"... Heechul called it "cable language." Solbi said that she didn't do it, but her friends might have

KCR said that your ribs might be another place that hurts a lot when you get hit and relayed yet another story Some time ago he was on a variety show where they were seeing who could withstand it the longest in the ring with a pro-wrestler. He won, but when he woke up the next day, he was in so much pain that he couldn't raise his arms or even cough. He said it hurt more than getting kicked in your balls or getting hit in the eye His had fractured both sides of his ribs.

JCW mentioned nose because it hurts when you get hit and your nose could bleed and Heechul added "because you lose the fight when your nose bleeds" JYR went to give that as an answer and KCR asked if it hurt when she got her nose job JYR said that many people think that she got a nose job because her nose is so pretty, but she has never gotten a nose job, just her eyes... to which LJ said, but you got your eyes done 4 times JCW said that it's your nose, but it looks like she got it done so JYR kept asking people if they wanted to touch it to make sure to which Heechul replied "we have no desire to touch it"

Heechul said that your cheekbone was a place that hurts when hit and relayed a story. He said that he debuted as an actor before Super Junior and so in the beginning of SuJu because he was tired and felt like he was the only one who had a piled on schedule and also due to his personality, he didn't talk to the members very much. Donghae must have gotten fed up with Heechul that he started yelling at Heechul. One day, Heechul turned on music and Donghae just abruptly turned off the music shouting "It's too loud $^@*#@&(" to him. Heechul was so flabbergasted that Donghae would behave in such a manner to someone who was older that he grabbed Donghae by the collar and his hands were raised up to hit him. Heechul tried to demonstrate on SDY then apologized for grabbing his shirt and turned to the other direction and tried to do the same to Solbi except he tried to grab the wrong gender Heechul said he got hit a lot as a kid so he knows what places to hit in order to cause the maximum pain. He said getting hit in the cheekbone is very painful and that when it gets sunken in, you are as good as dead. Solbi agrees, but she claims she's never gotten hit JCW and KCR don't think that your cheekbone will be painful since it's protruding. Heechul asked, "Then how come your balls hurt when you get hit when it's protruding?" JCW answered, "Because your balls protrude A LOT"

Solbi gave the answer of elbow and Shim Eun Jin said that she's been hit WITH an elbow once during the filming of "Dae Jo Young." She got elbowed in the mouth by a stuntman. Her mouth was ripped and swollen and they had to halt production because of it.

KCR said that getting hit in the tailbone is more painful than getting kicked in the balls, headbutted in the eyes, and having fractured ribs JCW told a story of a friend of his who bumped his tailbone onto a corner of the toilet and was hospitalized for a month. SDY also said that he knows of the experience because back when he was in college, he was in a play where he was supposed to sit down on a chair as he was trying to back away from someone. He accidently sat on the arm of the chair and jumped about up about 3 meters (10 feet) in the air. He was in pain for 3 months.

They came up with the answer of stomach and Heechul, JYR, LJ, Solbi, and SEJ tried to go up at once and while they were arguing about who should give the answer, Solbi gave the answer

The contestant who came to answer this question is the bodyguard of Inkigayo and other shows

One of the 50 fighters who were surveyed answered, "anywhere you get hit hurts"
