[ 1984-2019 K-Movie Star Box Office Power | Cr: THE SCREEN (#5 | #12) ]

[CJ-eS] Seol Kyung-gu started his acting career in theaters in 1993. Drawing from his long accumulated acting skills, he demonstrated powerful performances in movies, ‘Peppermint Candy’ and ‘Oasis’, and was hailed the best harvest of Korea’s movie industry. He starred in ‘Public Enemy’ series and the character he played, Mr. Kang Cheol-jung, is loved to date. He was the main actor in ‘Shilmido’ and ‘Haeundae’, both drew more than 10 million movie goers each.  He has since been in various movies across genres, from ‘Tower’ to ‘Cold Eyes’, ‘Hope’‘The Long Way Home’, proving that his starred movies have both quality and commercial success.

[kofic] SUL Kyung-gu has pursued a different acting career from the rest. His projects range from art-house to big budget commercial films. He appeared in the films looked at as a commentary on social issues such as <A Peppermint Candy> and <Oasis> but at the same time he has not shun the blockbusters such as <The Legend of Gingko>, <Jail Breakers>, <Silmido> and <Haeundae>. He was so strong, powerful, and intimidating when he was in the <Public Enemy> series and <Silmido>. But he is very delicate and skillfully depicts details when he recreated the ordinary everyday life in sober on-screen melodramas such as <I Wish I Had a Wife> and <Lost in Love>. He proved his acting caliber and commercial viability playing a ruthless cop in the thriller film, the <Public Enemy> series. He is a dedicated actor who extremely gains and loses weight for roles – he is even nicknamed “Mr. Fluctuating weight.” SUL Kyung-gu is often listed as Korea’s top character actors alongside [SONG Kang-ho]. His acting goes way over the top when he takes on a role of a sluggard or an outlaw, but contrary to his charismatic look, he is very good at portraying delicate feelings. SUL Kyung-gu showed off impeccable acting talent appearing in two recent crime thrillers, <No Mercy> and <Troubleshooter>. SUL returned to blockbuster status as the lead in the inferno thriller <The Tower>, which opened on Christmas Eve in 2012. 2013 saw him in no less than three diverse commercial projects: as a spy in the action-comedy The Spy: Undercover Operation, a surveillance expert in the thriller Cold Eyes and as a father trying to cope with his daughter’s assault in LEE Joon-ik’s Hope. In 2014, he appeared as a struggling actor in the 1970s who gets the role of lifetime, impersonating North Korean dictator KIM Sung-il for the government, only to fall into mental disrepair, in LEE Hae-jun's second solo directing effort <My Dictator>. The following year saw him appear in the Korean War blockbuster <The Long Way Home> from Lotte Entertainment and the techno thriller <Lucid Dream>, alongside KO Soo.

Appearing hot, the representative actor of Korean cinema is burning hotter and hotter.  That’s why Sul Kyunggu is beautiful

Sul Kyunggu, a former theater actor, dominated the theatrical world in the early 2000s.  After taking smaller roles in the films such as A Petal (1996), Girls’ Night Out (1998), and Phantom (1999), Sul Kyunggu starred in A Peppermint Candy directed by Lee Changdong in 2000, standing out as a representative actor of Korean films in a moment.  Youngho in A Peppermint Candy is a symbolic character representing the contemporary history of Korea.  Youngho, who used to be a good and friendly laborer, turns into a torturing policeman and again a vicious entrepreneur, but he ends up losing everything.  Through delicate yet powerful acting, Sul shows a man’s images which change over the years.  He lives as the man of those days.

After becoming a star with A Peppermint Candy, it is no exaggeration to say that all of Sul’s films in his filmography are his representative works. It is impossible to pick one or two representative works in his filmography.  Also, there is no limit to the spectrum that he has played.  Sul was an artistic comrade of Director Lee Changdong, a cineaste, and a ‘box office hit partner’ of Director Kang Woosuk.  From an ordinary banker, the lowest man, the greatest sportsman, and to the most beloved detective, Sul played a variety of roles in his career.  Especially, in his filmography, the two films, Silmido and Haeundae, have exceeded 10 million viewers, setting a criterion for the ‘Mega’ box office hits in Korea.  In Silmido which depicts an actual event in modern history, and in the disaster film Haeundae which depicts a tidal wave in Haeundae, Sul Kyunggu faithfully completes his roles.  At least the scenes Sul appears always end with sincerity.

The film Another Public Enemy proved that Sul Kyunggu can perform excellently in the framework of commercial films and boost the perfection of his work.  We can never imagine Kang Chuljoong without Sul Kyunggu’s acting, a corrupt detective who struggles not to cross the last line he should protect as a human being.  Actor Sul and Director Lee Changdong met again and made Oasis, which seems like an art film version of Kang Chuljoong.  Acting a scumbag devoting himself to love seems to be Sul Kyunggu’s signature.

The film The Merciless (2017) is the big break of Sul Kyunggu, who plays an ordinary guy with a bad but good character.  The public, who felt in love with the stylish movie belatedly, found Sul Kyunggu’s new charms in the film.  They found the charm of a middle-aged man who is getting older handsomely in Sul Kyunggu.

Thankfully, Sul himself opened his eyes to ‘his own style,’ too.  But there’s no difference in him.  He cried together in the pain of the Sewol Ferry Disaster, which we should never forget, and struggled at the bottom of the world.  Recently, in The Book of Fish, directed by Lee Joonik, Sul went back 200 years and played a noble scholar.  He appears as always to be ‘the person’ of the time that needs his face.

Since his debut, Sul writes, ‘Life is still beautiful, though,’ whenever he gives his autograph to his fans.  It’s the line from his debut film A Peppermint Candy.  We can see again how he feels about playing the roles of people who had to struggle with their whole body during the ugly time.  Sul is the hottest actor in the Korean film industry in the 2000s and the actor who has been burning hotter and hotter for 20 years.  That’s why he is getting more and more gorgeous. Synopsis from http://www.koreanfilm.org/kfilm01.html#wife

Long before this film hit the theaters, I Wish I Had a Wife drew interest for its pairing of two of Korea's most respected stars: Sol Kyung-gu (Peppermint Candy) and Jeon Do-yeon (Happy End). In their first crack at romantic comedy, Sol and Jeon take on parts which, although lacking the emotional extremes of their previous roles, form the very heart of this charming film.

Sol plays a lovesick bank teller who can't get marriage off his mind. He records videos for his future wife, telling her how curious he is to find out who she will turn out to be. When he meets a former classmate (played by Jin Hee-kyung), he thinks he's finally found his match. Jeon, meanwhile, plays a teacher who works across the street from his bank. After a few accidental meetings, she works up the courage to ask him out, but is rudely rebuffed.

This is the debut work of director Park Heung-shik, who worked as assistant director to Hur Jin-ho for Christmas in August (1998). The influence of the latter film can be seen in I Wish I Had a Wife: in its visual style, its grounding in everyday life, and also in a subtle reworking of Christmas's famous umbrella scene.

At times the film's music recalls a Sleepless in Seattle or When Harry Met Sally, but I Wish I Had a Wife is a much different kind of movie. Content to revel in the ordinary, it lingers on unimportant details and its heroes' various quirks. Although at times this comes at the expense of plot, it imparts to the film a sense of honesty, as well as an unhurried pleasure. By the latter half of the film we begin to feel quite intimate with the characters.

Ultimately this movie feels like a comfortable old pair of jeans. While it makes little effort to leap out and grab one's attention, viewers will be pulled in by its light humor and the way it makes its characters' lives feel so familiar. (Darcy Paquet)

From http://www.koreanfilm.or.kr:

KIM Bong-soo is a manager at a small bank in an apartment complex. During his three years there- no, for 23 years if you count his school days, he has never once been late. However, he purposely decides to skip work one day. There is only one reason. Inside a subway train that has suddenly stopped on his way to work, everyone else around him reaches for their cell phones to call someone. At that moment, he realizes that he does not have a single person to call. However, he does not know that in the educational center across the street from his bank, there is a 27-year-old woman named Won-ju who is nurturing a small love for him. Bong-soo and Won-ju run into each other every day, at the ramen restaurant, at the bank, at the bus station... All kinds of trivial incidents occur but Bong-soo still does not truly recognize Won-ju's presence. One day, while looking over the bank's CCTV tapes, Bong-soo discovers someone pitifully calling out his name to the small, closed-circuit camera that does not even record sound…

Sul 'Returns' as Kang Cheol-jung

By Lee Hyo-won

Staff Reporter

Actor Sul Kyoung-gu, front, resumes his role as hardball detective

in "Public Enemy Returns." / Courtesy of CJ Entertainment

This year has so far marked the return of many screen heroes, such as Indiana Jones and Rambo ― and the antihero Kang Cheol-jung. In "Public Enemy Returns," Sul Kyoung-gu ("Public Enemy," 2002; "Another Public Enemy," 2005) brazenly exhibits his sixth sense for acting as the diehard detective. Cheol-jung does not let his boss ― or the audience ― down in this funny, street-smart sequel, which also raises some critical social issues.

With disheveled hair, an unwashed windbreaker and a scar here and there, Cheol-jung is always diving headfirst into crime scenes. After 15 years of close calls with death, he's seen and done it all. The most notorious criminals sheepishly surrender to this thug of a man, who recklessly beats men twice his size, referees duels between schoolboys and openly accepts small bribes.

And of course, when a situation calls for good cop, bad cop tactics, we can guess the role Cheol-jung takes. But it's hard not to develop an affinity for this flawed man, who's seen getting seriously offended by a third grader's joke and submitting to his little daughter.

In "Return," Cheol-jung is the same disheartened man. He decides to quit once and for all when he is unable to get a proper bank loan for his house. His boss, detective Um (Kang Sin-il), files away the resignation form with a dozen more such "whines" from Cheol-jung. But he's serious this time.

However, a high school murder case draws Cheol-jung back into the task force ― or more precisely, the promise of a retirement grant does. A 17-year-old boy, the head of a gang of troublemakers, is found dead in his classroom. What appears to have been a skirmish among juvenile delinquents, however, takes an unexpected twist when the dead boy's fingerprints match those found in an unsolved homicide.

While investigating the dead boy's friends, Cheol-jung senses that their new boss, Geoseong Group CEO Lee Won-sul (Jung Jae-young), may be involved. Cheol-jung learns that the convict-turned-businessman brainwashes schoolboys and molds them into little devilish tools of murder. Their underage status prevents their fingerprints in crime scenes from being detected, and when they do get caught, their zeal for Geoseong keeps them quiet.

But Cheol-jung does not back down, and is determined to annihilate the public enemy. Continuing the tradition of the "Public Enemy" franchise, "Returns" eschews the cat-and-mouse game typical to the detective genre, and the battle between Cheol-jung and Won-sul is more like one between two dogs.

The film is well crafted, with complex layers of narrative unfolding in an organic form, interjected with just the right amount of comic relief. Compared to its rather grave prequels, "Returns" is much more determined to make you laugh, particularly by downright making fun of the police.

Yet some might find this movie more disturbing than previous ones as it involves teenage crime. Angst-ridden troublemakers, Cheol-jung says, will become either thugs or cops. Cheol-jung does manage to dissuade a few kids from becoming felons. But what will happen to them for sure, nobody knows. It is a bittersweet reminder of the soaring number of underage offenses in Korea.

The beauty of the movie lies in the unforgettable glances, grimaces and gestures of the actors. The magical casting does not end with Sul and Jung, but includes other eccentrically talented actors such as Lee Mun-sik, Kang Sin-il, and Yoo Hye-jin, and charismatic veteran Moon Sung-keun also makes a brief appearance. Fresh young actors also dazzle the silver screen with their uninhibited acting.

Great expectations for the film are reflected by the crowded press screening and overbooked public previews, where at one Seoul theater, people were willing to sit on the aisle steps to catch the flick before its box office release. High anticipation is of course displayed by the palpable PPL (product placement) ― advertisements ranging from drinks and restaurants to cell phones.

"Returns" currently tops the online reservation ranking ― the first Korean movie in 11 weeks to do so since "The Guard Post" ("GP506"), according to major portal site Maxmovie and the Korean Film Council. Big Hollywood movies trail behind, including Dreamworks animation "Kung Fu Panda" and "The Incredible Hulk." This may be an auspicious sign for the struggling Korean film industry, which marked a record low in May.

Now showing in theaters. 15 and over. 125 minutes. No English subtitles. CJ Entertainment.

CJ blows up a storm with "Haeundae"

Written by Han Sunhee

Article

SEOUL -- CJ Entertainment will bankroll and co-produce "Haeundae," a disaster movie with one of the largest ever budgets for a Korean movie.

The company announced on Wednesday that it will provide the entire financing for the movie and act as co-producer.

Helmed by Yoon Je-kyun ("Sex Is Zero"), pic began lensing on August 18 at a beach in the southern city of Busan, familiar to visitors of the Pusan festival. Story follows events after the tourist resort is struck by a giant tsunami.

Pic is also getting attention for its star casting. Talent line-up is headed by Ha Ji-won ("Duelist"), Sul Kyung-goo ("Public Enemy Returns"), Park Joong-hoon ("Radio Star") and Uhm Jung-hwa ("Seducing Mr. Perfect".)

Polygon Entertainment ("The Perfect Storm" "Tomorrow") is set to work on CGI. After conventional lensing in Busan is wrapped, crew will head to the U.S. in November for special effects photography. Pic will be wrapped in December and released in the summer of 2009.

[KoreanFilm.org] Sol Kyung-gu (b. May 1, 1968) studied at Hanyang University Department of Film and Theater, and upon graduation appeared in numerous theatrical productions. In the mid-1990s he began taking on minor roles in feature films, but it was not until 1999 that he made his breakthrough with major roles in The Bird That Stops in the Air, Rainbow Trout, and above all else, Peppermint Candy. The critical acclaim and larger-than-expected popular appeal of this film instantly transformed Sol into one of the most respected young actors in Korea.

After the rather heavy-themed work of his early career, Sol then appeared in a mix of genre movies and more serious work. He starring in the romantic comedy I Wish I Had a Wife with Jeon Do-yeon in 2001, and then acted in a Japanese TV drama produced by NHK.

The year 2002 was huge for Sol, starring in three major films which effectively made him into one of the most popular actors in Korea. As a violent police detective in Public Enemy he won both local acting awards and many new fans as the film drew close to 3 million viewers. In August, he starred in Lee Chang-dong's highly acclaimed third film Oasis, which won the Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival, and which won him yet more acting awards in Korea. Finally in November, he acted together with Cha Seung-won in the smash hit Jail Breakers by popular director Kim Sang-jin.

Sol continued his hot streak in 2003 when he starred in Silmido directed by Cinema Service founder Kang Woo-suk, which became the first Korean film in history to gross 10 million admissions. His next role was as the title character in Rikidozan, about the legendary ethnic Korean pro wrestler who became a national hero in Japan in the 1950s. Sol gained 20kg for the role and also delivered 95% of his lines in Japanese. Despite winning great praise for his performance, however, the film vastly underperformed on its local release.

In 2005, Sol starred in the sequel to Public Enemy, which ended up outgrossing the original, and also signed on to star in a melodramatic love story together with Song Yoon-ah.....
